It constantly baffles me how they could make so much music (live) with only 5 people! Obviously, it's the vocals but quite often the music is barely in the mix and they still sound huge. This is a super performance both with the sound and vocals. I love it when they mess up the opening to "When I grow up to be a man"! No? Check out the history of "Pet Sounds". "Rolling Stone noted that the percussion in the album included sleigh bells, timpani, güiro, vibraphone and bongos, previously unused in rock music. The session musicians used Coke cans, water bottles and orange juice jugs for percussion." Might not have had "digital" in 1966, but Brian used everything but the kitchen sink, and he used that too...
Mattley Crue Really tho. Considering Brian played 1 note on the bass and they start with that 4 part harmony right away must be so hard. And I bet they had really bad monitoring so they can't hear themselves well. They certainly didn't have in ear monitors at that time.

I'm also 16 and I also wish music's still this way. It's soooo good!! Music today is awful, and most times the singers aren't even singing. These guys had real talent
I completely understand what you are saying due to the fact when I was 16, 44 years ago I wanted to go back to those days of The Beach Boys 4 Seasons Supremes and that was just ten years earlier but seemed so long ago at that time. Now we are talking over 50 years ago and all I can say is enjoy where you are today while enjoying the music of these great groups.
Great clips. Just saw the legendary Brian Wilson, Al Jardine, and Blondie Chaplin perform at the San Diego Fair. What a show, and they're still going strong. Brian can't hit the high notes, but Al's son does them for him.
Wow, love this. There sound was so complicated, amazing that they could pull it off live. I like how they had the false start there, so refreshing to see a "real" live music performance.

Visited the LA area many times and unless I hear the Beach Boys it's just not the same. My favorite motel plays their music nonstop at their outdoor coffee shack ... love it. My whole day is set.
"When I Grow Up..." these are friggin' difficult harmonies to do live x10 with a screaming crowd. Extraordinary. An historical and valuable recording for any producer or musician.
Great to see the special relationship that America and Britain have and had which is very evident here. Just as America embraced The Beatles and others, Britain welcomed many American groups. Great to see.
I didnt think it was LIVE< but lip snych since it was so perfect. I GET AROUND. Then you can see its live when they do the intro to When i Grow Up. Amazing talent
When I was a small kid one of my first pieces of music was a Beach Boys 8-track tape. I had a red, plastic, portable 8-track player I would put that tape in and carry around. I didn't really give The Beach Boys much thought until I was older and I gave them another listen. It was Pet Sounds that made me realize they were more than beach music. The other day I saw them on Ed Sullivan and that made me interested into going back, and what better place than here.
Every live performance I watch of The Beach Boys doing I get around is pretty much the same, same shirts, same on point vocals and playing, same feeling I get hearing Brian hit those high notes, just awesome. Even mikes awkward dancing is the same!
I believe this was September 1964 as part of their Europe and UK Tour. That makes Mike 23 years old, Brian and Al Jardine 22, Dennis 19 and Carl 17, he wouldn't be 18 till December. Saw this on the 'Old Grey Whistle Test' (classic UK TV music show) about 1976? Loved it!
This performance is awesome! Maybe the audio systems were different in the UK or more likely positioned their microphones closer to the bass drum, therefore the sound is very "British Beat" so popular in America as well! This version of the song "When I Grow Up" sounds way better than the studio recording in my opinion. Being a huge Beatles fan I enjoyed their beat sound in England.
alan murr Glad the British were years ahead when it came to music. They kept the Beach Boys alive for the second half of the 60s when the American public ditched the Beach boys in favor of country music. I guess America wasn't ready for Brian Wilson's prog rock.
I was blessed to see all the original members at the Louisville National Guard Armory/ Louisville Gardens in Downtown while they were on Tour in early 1990's before Carl and Dennis passed away. Their harmony in person was incredible. I still reminisce about that experience. Wow! Just like yesterday. They truly are "Americas Band". California's Surf Sound Forever. Class, professional, iconic and nostalgic musicians, timeless 1960's Fountain of Youth performers and Hall of Fame Rock N' Roll Icons.
The part where the interviewer was asking Brian what he wanted to see, Brian kinda reminded me of Bill Murry. His answers and the way he held is mouth.
I knew the beach boys later in life I loved their music but I never heard much about one member Wilson so many speak so highly of him. He was the drummer did he ever sing. Brian made the words and music for them mile love sang. Brian was the one that made the beach happen with his talent to write and pull all together
Connie Charley Dennis Wilson was the Beach Boys drummer from the start. He sang background harmonies, and also lead vocals on some of their tracks. He later developed as a pianist and song writer in his own right, and released the album “ Pacific Ocean Blue”, which is well worth a listen. Try to find the documentary “Dennis Wilson, The real Beach Boy”. It was broadcast several years ago on UK’s Channel 4, I think. Really sad to see his decline. I still listen to the Beach Boys regularly and saw what may have been the final concert featuring the 5 surviving original members at Wembley Arena in September 2012.
I didn't really appreciate their genius when I was growing up but now at 70 am enjoying what I missed.

Amazing live band -- flawless renditions of those complex songs seemingly done with ease!
All their songs are beautiful.
I didnt think it was LIVE< but lip snych since it was so perfect. I GET AROUND. Then you can see its live when they do the intro to When i Grow Up. Amazing talent
they was so good the earth even said i love you
When I was a small kid one of my first pieces of music was a Beach Boys 8-track tape.
Merveilleux groupe, j'apprécie BEAUCOUP..J'aime les sixties..
Loved it!
Anthony Clay TMI
gettinnapkins What does TMI mean please?
Anthony Clay "Too Much Information"
Thanks for the info! Not "TMI" at all
Awesome info and greatly appreciated!
Brian at about 3 minutes- WOW! So sweet and gorgeous!
Love Brian's falsetto and adore his music, especially Pet Sounds. So glad to see him before someone gave him too much LSD.
I totally agree, this live performance is better.
That "oh fuck" moment at the beginning of when I grow up is hilarious. Beach boys are my favorite band.
The UK had better taste. When The Beatles were # 1 in America, The Beach Boys were still # 1 in the UK.
alan murr Glad the British were years ahead when it came to music. They kept the Beach Boys alive for the second half of the 60s when the American public ditched the Beach boys in favor of country music. I guess America wasn't ready for Brian Wilson's prog rock.
alan murr If The Beatles were #1 in the U.S. then Americans had better taste.
I agree. Good music that didn't chart well in the US usually did better in the UK. Look at Break Away or Do It Again, or the album Sunflower.
@GodZpeed X7 You can't be serious...No way are the Beatles overrated.
GodZpeed X7 I tend to agree.
I understand Moon the Loon aka Keith Moon was a Beach Boy fan, Quality conquers all.
Totally beat-ed up for the British audience. Beat + doo-wop. Gorgeous!
Does THAT ONE ever bring back some memories... I had almost forgotten how good these guys were.
The screaming at certain points cracks me up. Perfecto!
I remember my baby sitter always saying Brian was gorgeous ha ha
He was!
The part where the interviewer was asking Brian what he wanted to see, Brian kinda reminded me of Bill Murry. His answers and the way he held is mouth.
I'm sure Keith Moon tuned into this show as he was probably the biggest Beach Boys fan in UK at the time.
No doubt John and Paul were listening also.
From Hawthorne California , The Beach Boys
1960 A great year. Great music.
Absolutely fantastic performance. The crowd was going crazy at the end of I Get Around
happy tune. thanks Beach Boys
Wonderful!
...glad I found this piece of music history!
Just brilliant for live. The vocals are mindblowingly good.
