I knew Bruce years ago as his bookkeeper and as an admirer. He is without a doubt a very kind, considerate and talented man. He never smoked, drank, or took drugs, he was very devoted to his family. I love his talent, which didn't get the reorganization it deserved, and I admired his kindness. He once did a very nice thing for my dear departed mother and I always was appreciated he took the time to show her kindness. Admire this man, he deserves it. ~Diana
@@runnersdialzero1244 I don't think that's what she was implying. She was just trying to paint us a picture of the kind of artist he was back in the 70's, as she knew him personally.
I met him before a BB show about 6 -7 years ago. My friend worked for the local radio station that sponsored the show . My daughter and I spoke with for about 45 minutes! Security had to come a say Bruce it’s showtime!
A proper song - one of my top Beach Boys songs. Great, cinematic lyrics, whimsical melody, interesting chord construction etc. and the harmonies on the record are sublime.
I've actually seen/heard Bruce do this live twice (once with the Mike-and-Bruce "Beach Boys" in 2009, and on last year's reunion tour), and while the full-band backing doesn't allow him nearly this much room to improvise, he still knocks it out of the park. Last year, a couple of weeks before his 70th birthday, he still aced the falsetto part at the end. He's a very friendly guy, too.
Talent galore!!!! Thank you Bruce for the convo in April 2015. Humble yet proud of his accomplishments. The Beach Boys are fortunate to have him for this many years. Thank you Bruce for putting a smile on this woman's face 4/19 in Montclair, NJ. A class act you are!!
The best version ever was in Late '82, RedRocks Amphitheatre, in Denver; Bruce on lead, Carl, Al, Jeff Foskett/ Adrian Baker backing him, with only the piano acompanying. It was a magical moment, one of the very best BB Concerts of the more than 25 I saw. What a memory. Wolfsky9
This is a great song. I always thought it could be taken two ways: on its face as a sweet reflection of an idyllic family life or as an expression of something that can never really be in real life except for in brief moments. He also penned the Barry Manilow hit "I Write The Songs."
Bruce was probably the most talented musician in the Beach Boys. I've heard the Wrecking Crew guys said Bruce was good enough on piano to be part of the Crew if he wanted to be. I always get a kick out of those Beach Boys radio station promos that turn up on their box sets with Bruce playing that Old West style piano (for lack of a better term) underneath the promos.
Beautiful beautiful beautiful song!! 🥰 I love Bruce so much! He’s my favourite Beach Boy and the most talented one in my opinion! And he’s also got the best personality and kindest heart out of them all! 🥰 He deserves way more love and recognition then he gets! He is such a good singer and songwriter and plays the piano so well! I don’t get how people couldn’t think he’s talented! You can see his beautiful gifting from God just from watching this!
I also think Bruce, I think he's very talented. I'd love to meet you. I love your voice, your pronunciation, your wonderful compositions. I love you so much, Bruce ❤
@@neymaalnajmah2436 I couldn’t agree more with everything you said! I wish I could meet him too and I love him so much! I met Bruce when I worked at his Montecito home, I was there to do some carpentry work on his sound studio, he was really personable and friendly, he even talked me into playing Santa Claus for his kids that night, I rented a suit and went over around 8 that night and did a very poor job of Santa, I believe it was 1986
Bruce Johnston was a huge reason that I got into the Beach Boys in the very early seventies. His 'Tears In The Morning' had been released as a UK single and when I saw the BBs perform it on , I think, Top Of The Pops, I thought "this is marvellous stuff". I then heard Mama Cass's version of Disney Girls on BBC radio and, yes, it was another Bruce Johnston composition. Well, the magnificent Sunflower and Surfs Up were purchased by me and I found out that ALL the Beach Boys were just great.
What a fine performance of a lovely Beach Boys song by the most unappreciated of all the band's members. Listening to this gifted musician makes me wonder how Bruce has survived all these years with his creative impulses buried under the needs of the group.
this is the best Beach Boys song of all time i think...i like most of the tracks on Pet Sounds and God Only Knows is a timeless song too but this one really captures these true thoughts and visions that most people either experience or imagine and long to experience within their lives
Loved the Whistle Test all my life, and I really struggle to think of a better clip than this one. It's up ther with John Ottway and Wlid Willy Barrett!
Thanks so much for uploading this. Such a wonderful song. Great to hear it performed so raw. Made my night. Going to try to find Adam Ant - "The day I met God" now!
Incredible song. Bruce Johnston will surely be remembered as one of the finest songwriters of all time. He'll be remembered along with John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Bob Dylan… Some might disagree with me, however with songs like Disney Girls, Deirdre, I Write The Songs, Nearest Far Away Place, Pipeline, and Slow Summer Dancin' --- He's one of the greats. Not to mention his skills as a Vocalist, Producer, Instrumentalist. He's produced tons of great albums like LA (Light Album), Going Public, Surfer's Pajama Party, Keepin' The Summer Alive, and more… He played Bass Guitar and Piano for The Beach Boys as well as other Surf groups. And as a vocalist--- that falsetto says it all! :)
This has become my favorite version of Disney Girls. Thank you #BruceJohnston for allowing it to be taped. May I dare ask anyone who is sleeping in the chair behind Bruce? It looks like Mike Love, it's not any of the Beach Boys 3 brothers for sure.
The bloke at the back is 'whispering' Bob Harris, the presenter of the Old Grey Whistle Test in the 70s He had and still has very high regard for the BBoys music, even at the beginning of the 70s when many considered them 'uncool' Nterviews occured and Surfs Up album sold pretty well in UK at this time, I seem to recall him turning folk 'back on' to BBoys music around SurfsUp /Holland time, at least a factor in that.
Never heard this song until this clip. Amazing performance and intriguing lyrics even many, many years after it was written. Thanks for posting, I am on my 5 viewing.
Bruce played this song at OPier 6 in Baltimore Md on the 24th of July and he stilled sounded awesome like it was produced yesterdya. It was the best 48th birthday gift to myself to see Mike Love and especially "John Stamos". The BEACH BOYS ROCK!!!!!!!!!!
... a 'tin pan alley' phrase from years ago. When they got the first pressing of a record they would play it to people they called the old greys [doormen in grey suits] . The ones they could remember and could whistle having heard it just once or twice had passed the old grey whistle test.[1]
Toni Tennille did a great job with this, in fact that was where I first read Bruce's name was on the Captain and Tennille LP's credits back in the 1974. Bruce was the only BB who could match Brian's musicality.
Toni Tennille sings both this and I Write the Songs on their first LP. They had 3 hit singles from it and Toni wanted the studio to release I Write the Songs as a single but the studio wanted to move on to their second album. So Barry Manilow had the big hit.
Thanks yeoGlover. I thought you were kidding me, so i looked it up on Wikipedia, and found it. It's a music show that was on the BBC2 (so Englad I presume). For those as confused as I was, I pasted the exlanation of OGWT here.(see next comment)
Bruce's Grammy knows he wrote it. I'm sure he also made sufficient $ from royalties and the many studio appearances he made during that time. So he did have a decent career during his hiatus from the band---just mainly a behind-the-scenes one.
did you know that there is a version of bruce doing dylans blowin' in the wind solely on an acoustic, it was recorded for beach boys party but never released, beatiful version.
He was saying that it was illegally ripped from a broadcast and posted without his or the broadcast owners permission. He posted a comment on one of the Beach Boys message boards about it. The Beach Boys Britain message board.

This is what I love about live versions, theyre so much more dynamic, you can hear how into pillow fights he is
I think it's a brilliant example of a Songwriter singing his own song while he remembers why he wrote it.
Well done Mr Johnston.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written. Thank you Bruce
He can still sing like this live, its amazing!
True!
Now "Still", that's relative. It's a very old recording. [Though I wouldn't be surprised he still has it]
