  • Tried to reduce stringing of shots using the BlackMZ and the Johnston & Dow conical. Appeared to get some improvement, but not what we hoped for.

I have been watching your series (parts 1, 2 and now 3). I have never used Black MZ in my revolvers, but I do have excellent results from a 1-16 twist barrel, Lee 200 grain RN cast with 1-30 (tin/lead) with 25 grains of Triple 7 3F. Just to toss in a variable, go back to 25-30 grains of 3F black powder (I shoot Swiss) and repeat your groups with both round ball and JD Conical… I know how my brain would be working through this.

Sounds like a plan. Will have my wife put that right on her "honey do list". O.R.

Now that you have part three out, I'm sure that you have herd this before However, Its not how they shoot at 25,, its how they shoot at 50, and that is so true that comes to loads, bullets and pistols. I have had pistols that shot great at 25, however wouldn't shoot good at 50. same with cast bullets. If you buy a Bullseye gun, they always test it at 50 for group size and 3 inch is the limit, any bigger than that and you are wasting you time. This has been verry unique with the colt walkers that you have done, Idk, however, I don't believe that anyone has done this before on UA-cam. Keep up the great content and maybe the paper wrap my be the way to go. - Dave

One again thanks Dave. Oh, side note, they don’t seem to do well at 25 either. Figured they would do poorly at 50 but wanted to see where the heavier bullet would hit at the distance. The one decent group surprised me and thought I might have something going. Turns out probably was false alarm. O.R.

Well, that's interesting results. Patterns like a shotgun, but I'd put money on it that you'll dial it in! Thumbs up video Old Ranger ~John

If you went back up to the heavier load (conicals) when you load the first chamber and put a mark on your rammer and then loaded the rest of the chambers using that mark maybe that would keep the pressure close to the same for each chamber 🤷🏻‍♂️
    Just a thought

And a good one. Need to do more with the J&D before it goes on Ebay. O.R.

This does seem to point to the round ball being more consistent at 50 yds, but I think these substitute powders do tend to give erratic results, not sure why as they must be made to a very tight formula, but I think that a black powder load would give something to compare with. Interestingly there appeared to be no tumbling with the conicals, even with the slow twist rate test. Stay safe! Chris B.

Right. Almost like a smooth bore might do. I should put the light target against some stiff cardboard or just use cardboard to check for wobble. I’ve wondered if the conical strips, especially with the fast twist and relatively small bearing surface since 1/8” at the base is recessed for the paper wrap. More research necessary. The situation: “the harvest is plenteous, but the labourers are few”. O.R.

    Maybe velocity sensitive?

I'm pretty convinced that the BlackMZ has a tendency to string. Why, I may never know. Maybe it's just the nature of the beast, something the shooter doesn't have much control over. That's true of lots of smokeless also. I plan to work more on the J&D, have some ideas, and one of them is to use the real Black stuff. O.R.

I think your bullets are too low in the cylinder, too far from the forcing cone. So when the projectile engage the rifles, the speed is too important. Too much free flight.

That’s something to consider for sure. Maybe use a filler to keep speed down so it takes the fast twist rifling. O.R.

I've seen all your videos, I know it's not you to blame. Just looking like those conicals are just terrible. If anyone can help them, you're the one to be on the job.
Could just be a bad barrel

Thanks. I ran out of time and ideas last summer. Here, summer is like a roll of toilet paper, it doesn’t last long enough, and speeds up as you get to the end. I’m trying to get an early start this year, and wrote that down on my wife’s “honey do list “. O.R.
