  • Here's one disadvantage I discovered using a ball press and getting
    distracted. I managed to load 6 RB with no powder. Oh well, the nipple threads needed cleaning anyway.

    I applaud you for admitting what you did, Videos as this is a (How to avoid doing this) video, Also for the viewer it is about being an open minded person that can learn. Its great info about those nipple sizes and also the rod diameter you need to knock out your bullets if you should load a projectile over a empty chamber. It's still rare great content. Keep up the good work and don't kick yourself, life does that automatically for us. - Dave

      Thanks Dave. There's a few times that I haven't came clean. Like the time I thought I had fired 6, but there was still a hot one. That caused an adrenaline rush. Fortunately I didn't start the loading process, and I'm still here to talk about it. O.R.

      Thanks Steve, but it wasn't my finest hour. Got distracted by actually remembering that I needed to re-charge my grease (lube) gun, came back to the bench, and forgot that I was about to put powder, and rammed 6 down. O.R.

    I've done it with one chamber on two occasions, never 6 at once 😂. Either put it down to a senior moment, or blame the nearest person for distracting you. 😂

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  3 місяці тому +1

      It was the senior thing. You need to get yourself a loading press so you can take the cylinder out. That way you don't notice powder absence because it isn't obvious. I didn't mention what really bothered me was that there was no lube on the chambers. Apparently, I forgot to do that also, and then capped her up. Good thing I have my own range because not sure I could trust myself on a public one. If I do, hopefully my gun handling training will over-ride stupidity O.R.

      @@oldranger3044 I bought a reloading press that seats all 6 balls in one go. However, I find it hard work cranking down the screw and stopped using it. What I do now is store powder charges in vials. At the range I count out 6 charges, 6 balls and 6 caps. I also use a small funnel. The powder goes in all 6 chambers followed by balls and finally the grease. I've been shooting every week since 2011 with only the two slip ups mentioned. They occurred years ago, before establishing my present more consistent loading routine. Thinking back, I was momentarily distracted by a new club member taking an interest in my Uberti New Model Navy. I was aged 60 then, now 72, older, wiser and more experienced. 🤠

      And still alive. Oh, was thinking about the comment I returned about the press. I don't think I used it with the Walker because of the extra cylinder length and larger diameter arbor. I was loading 2.2 cc's which only comes half way up in the chambers, so probably didn't notice they were empty. Anyway, that sounds like a good system you're using, and at my home range, I probably develop bad habits. O.R.

      @@oldranger3044 I don't recommend the press that loads 6 at a time. Not only did it sprain my wrist twisting the tommy bar and screw, the tommy bar is made of alloy and bent. Neither did it seat the balls deep enough with 22 grains of powder. It's the .44 version I used for my recently purchased Uberti Sheriff model. It's easier and faster to reload with the short lever on the pistol than the multi press. I place a leather finger from an old archery glove on the end of the lever to save my hand. Keep posting the videos, I always look forward to seeing your experiments.

      Right! I've done it more than once on rifles, but never with percussion revolver. Even once shot my ramrod downrange, and that was the original from the Browning. Thanks for the encouragement and understanding. O.R.

    These things happen! But it does prove the point about using .451 balls, I always feel better about using 454 balls with soft lead they are not difficult to seat, and it gives more engagement for the rifling as well as giving a better seal, at least you have your cat to keep a watch out for you! Stay safe! Chris B.

      The Lee mold cuts the ball slightly below tangent. It was likely problematic, but I shot groups that appeared better with the 451 (actually .446-.447) than with the 454. Somehow the first Lee .451 mold I purchased cast that size. The fellow at Lee when I reported it (thought they might want to know there was a problem) just told me I didn't know how to cast. Didn't blame him, and the next one I ordered was right, and does .451. Anyway,,, I was thinking maybe the more or less perfect ones shot better than those modified by the shave-squeeze thing. I'm not taking that idea to the bank, but I really don't need to use another 1K Remington caps and several weeks to check it out. I DO need to keep up the lube, for that, and other reasons.
      Thanks for pointing this out, was hoping someone would comment on it. Stay safe. O.R.

      @@oldranger3044 If you look up ballmoulds in UK you can buy moulds in .001" increments, I use them a the time and they will post to you, you have to cut the sprue off but they cast a really nice ball, try them, you will like them I am sure. Chris B.

    Could the balls look like that because they were seated down farther then when they had powder in it

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  3 місяці тому +1

      Good question. They were slightly further, but the loading press bottoms out at about the seating distance, so I would say no. The chambers are not tapered to my knowledge because seating doesn't become more difficult with distance. They picked up black fouling where they contacted the side of the chambers. If you look close on one there is a break in the ring where it crosses top of the ball is cut from the sprue cutter of the mold, telling us that there would be a space for possible hot gas to get buy and do the chain fire thing if lube wasn't there (or a wad over the powder). Some folks claim that might not cause a chain fire. I'm not betting on that. O.R.
