  • First shooting of the Pietta 1858 that has a case hardened frame and checked grips. Very nice looking upgrade to their standard models and wanted to see where it printed at 21 Yds, and if
    it could group as nice as it looks.

    I love it, "Got to work on your excuses ahead of time" - Classic! ...and actually that is a great tip, checking cylinder to forcing cone alignment as part of an initial inspection before shooting. Thanks for another great video!

    I like that you showed the finishing of fitting with the trigger to remove the creep. you should do something to get rid of it all in all, however, sometimes increasing pressure to slide through creep makes more of a surprise shot, because you have to wait for the trigger to brake and watch your sights, the shot is usually an accurate one. (Maybe that's just me) However, ya, I hate creep and overtravel, overtravel is a accuracy killer. anyway, great revolver and good shooting, peace - Dave

    That second string was outstanding! The Remington is not really a favourite of mine, I find replacing the cylinder a really fussy operation, but this one with the colour case hardened frame looks very nice, I could never understand why they were not made like this originally? Hope you are enjoying the sunshine at last! Chris B.

      We seem to be in a monsoon time, and the mosquitoes are bad enough to discourage cleaning operations, so doing stuff inside. I like the feel of the colt's, but sure can't argue with how the rems shoot. Also would rather clean the colts.
      I'm tempted to taper inside where the arbor pin goes into the cylinders. Maybe I'm just not pushing hard enough, but just is difficult to slide in, even when it appears to be aligned.
      Ya, I had to quit after #2, no reason to push that because we both know there's only one way that would have worked out.
      I'm slowly getting back into building (some), but time never improved my art ability. Can't draw a potato, so my eye just doesn't see where to remove the wood. The mechanics are ok, but stock shaping is a chore. Stay safe Chris. O.R.

      @@oldranger3044 Yes we have been rained on almost every day these past few weeks, it makes the grass grow, so that is another job to do! I now have 2 flintlocks on the build bench, and the stock shaping is a real problem when I do not have an original to look at, for all the photos out there it does not help when trying to get the contours right, I did think about ordering a scrap stock from Jim Kibler to have something to relate to, but I plod on with the photos , what is needed is a cross section profile every few inches along the stock, once the wood is cut there is no putting it back! That Remington arbour pin is so small and it get fouled up easy. Stay dry! Chris B.

      @@453421abcdefg12345 The reject stocks are a good plan. I picked up several in the 80’s at the NMLRA Nationals in Friendship IN, because they were affordable and thought I would build with them. Closer look when I got home and I realized why you get what you pay for. Did use a couple, but the others would work well if one is building that style. I’m thinking about attacking my duplicate carver and using them for patterns. So much to do, and I seem to be running low on steam. Raining again today. It might dry out in August. Have a good day. What I've found with the Pietta's that have cylinder/cone alignment issues that are minor like this where the jag or dowel bumps the cylinder mouth is that it's usually just the cylinder pin, but sometimes it's the front or rear pin hole in the frame. Hopefully it's just the pin since it's the simplest thing to fix simply by changing the pin to a proper diameter one. You can check it by using one from another gun that's in alignment. Uberti's almost never have this issue, nor do Pietta colt clones. IDK why they don't take the Remington clones more seriously. The last color cased Remington I picked up was an Uberti with the forged frame. It was a couple hundred more than the Pietta, not timed correctly, not finished as nicely, internals not properly hardened, but after repairing the issues it's a much slicker gun. I do like the feel of an Uberti in the hand! they look almost identical laying side by side, but they are very different in handling and measurements.

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for your information and suggestions. Caused me to get out the postal scale. Pietta 2.36 oz. Uberti 2.14 oz. I have noticed too that the difference can be felt. Great point about the pin holes and pin size. Thanks again for your input. O.R.

    • @hercules1073
      @hercules1073 2 місяці тому

      @@oldranger3044 They point differently as well... Place the Pietta and Uberti side by side on a table. Holding the bottom grip strap flat to the table. One will have the muzzle pointing slightly downward while the other will point slightly upward. I don't have mine out of the safe at the moment and don't remember which points up and which points down. I never realized how different the guns actually were until I started doing measurements etc. to try to find out why they felt so different in the hand and balance. I prefer the Uberti for feel and ease of re cocking for follow up shots and action feel, but I shoot Pietta's better for some reason. I also read somewhere and don't recall where (could have gotten the info from an importer like Taylor's) that the grip and frame dimensions of the newer forged framed Uberti 58's were of different dimensions than older Uberti's as well. Taylors did tell me that they started forging all of the 58 frames when they introduced the cartridge conversion guns.

      @@hercules1073 👍Ok, so now I’m fired up about checking more out. Wasn’t aware of the forged frames. Just with their Rem’s ? The Uberti that weighed 2.14 oz I’ve had for 10 years and came used. I have some new that I can check. “Lots of work to do in Texas.” O.R.

    • @hercules1073

      @@oldranger3044 Yes just the 1858's are forged as far as I know. When Uberti first introduced the 5.5" Remington years ago I purchased it and I had the 18.5" carbine as well as a few Pietta '58's (if I recall correctly Pietta was first to market the 5.5" version based off an article by Mike Beliveau) and drop in conversions were still in infancy at the time, but I had them for both brands. The cylinder from the carbine wouldn't work in the 5.5" Uberti and I looked into why and was told there was a change in the frames! so from what I have discovered over the years is that the Uberti frames have changed somewhat at least three times.

    Nice shooting. That's competition accurate as long as you run a cylinder first.
    Did you make a vid on putting that pin in the hammer and why you did it? Don't remember seeing it.

      Ya, I need to discuss working up there when I'm shooting. Worrying about her falling down gives me added stress; don't need that when loading.
      No video on that. Figure it might not be a good idea because if that pin isn't tight enough, well, go figure what could happen as it works its way out. It's the way Loren W. Smith "home gunsmithing the single action revolver" recommends. There's little stress on it, and with some time in the black powder arena, well, we all know what rust does. O.R.

      Use a good natural lube. I recommend TC bore butter, definitely ballistol, or Blackie Thomas Gunbutter. Being original 1860 just use your standard army load and you'll be good. Hot water and dish soap for cleaning

    • @oldranger3044
      @oldranger3044  2 місяці тому +1

      I do pretty much a complete cleaning after each shooting session. Don't want to go over what you already know about cleaning, but that is probably the most important. I will be posting my method for cleaning the Walker, which covers how I proceed on pretty much all mine. During that process, the small springs like the one on the hand and , bolt, and trigger-bolt, need to be de-bunked and oiled, as they have a tendency to break, especially if they get rusty. O.R.

      One big advantage you have over a repro 1860 is that the main spring is about 12 Lb pull, (usually), and that does not allow the gases to escape back through the nipple, do not be tempted to lighten the mainspring. Chris B.
