Really nice video. When I explain bracket racing I like to get out timeslips and show how I won/lost a race based on the numbers. So that could be helpful if you show an actual slip and say who had the better light and what not.
Appreciate the video gonna try this again. Did it in my 2005 Grand Prix GXP front drive. What held that car back was the 4 auto with a 2.92 final. With a few upgrades intake-programmer-shift kit-3 inch down pipe-stock cat-deleted resonator-added a chambered muffler where that was-deleted rear mufflers to SLP tips-lowered 1.8 front and 1.7 rear-it was around 350hp at the motor. Best run on Federal SS595 at 22 lbs. was a 13.9@99mph. Could not break 100 due to it wouldn't get out of 2nd gear. First time I ran bracket I was averaging 14.3 that night. Dialed that in and must have hit a good light broke out by .3 ran 14.0@98 1.8 60 ft. Miss that car that LS4 sounded mean. We had one guy turboed to 500hp his was running 12.0@119. What if you run slower than your dialed in time does that count as a breakout or is it only if you run faster?
Finally..... I was so tired of trying to explain this to my friends. I'm gonna make them all watch this when they ask. Most tracks I've been to do double red lighting the same way. A few didn't though.

great video , here is the part that's confusing me is the Race Track ad box and no box is easy but if you have a 6 sec 1/8 th mile or 9.5 1/4 mile car how do you know if you can race somewhere in what the race track ad says , i think i know but its still a bit of race car lingo that I'm new to . I can't understand why bracket racing is a thing. Most if what you're doing is racing yourself as in your time. And also your reaction time. Why put all that money into your car to make it fast when all you have to do is get a good reaction time and hit your dial in. I don't get the appeal. Head to head is way more gratifying. Who has the fastest machine. Just balls to the wall. That's exciting
So do drag racers use their peripheral vision or their central vision for the lights, I ask because reaction times are supposed to be faster using peripheral vision
To me if you beat someone I want to beat them by a lot not by a little bit.....I guess I'll never understand bracket racing or maybe I'm just so used to heads-up racing that I just can't understand bracket racing....lol....I wish I understood better.
Or you could be closer to your dial and over your dial and still lose to someone who also goes over their dial. This happens when they have a superior reaction time makes up for their top-end variance.
I have a question. I have a 1986 Monte Carlo super sport modified small block mild roller cam for 17 hp 446 foot pounds of torque at 4200 RPM. I am having trouble red lighting. I’m doing what I believe is called shallow staging I pull up until the second light just comes on and I stop a launch at 1200 RPM this is an automatic car. I hate the throttle as soon as the yellow light comes on and I’m offing getting the red light could someone suggest a way to solve that it seems difficult for me to find exact spot during the yellow light to hit the throttle with repeatability. Bill

Think had learned how to shallow stage and ran the fronts at 45 to help rolling resistance and the rear a tad higher say 28 I could have run a bit faster. Well their dial must be posted on their car before passing the ready line, before pulling into the burn out. So after that point the dial in is locked. But if you mean what if they post a dial that is actually slower then what they think they can run, then they are "holding" some time. This means that they are going to either need to run the finish line really well and hope to have the better light, otherwise they will end up breaking out trying to get there first.
Great video. The wife and I probably watched 5 "intro to bracket racing" videos before this, this was hands down the best.

You can also disqualify yourself by crossing the centerline. At some tracks, crossing the centerline trumps red lighting and breaking out.

Other ways to lose: cross the center line, break down, or the starter nails you for excessive braking on the top end.

Why don't tracks run test & tunes for bracket racers, with dial-ins, so Racers can learn top end racing without the pressure of the actual race?

What if you have a slower reaction time but are closer to the dial in
You could run your exact dial and still get beat to the finish line if your reaction time is considerably slower than your opponents.

But if you mean what if they post a dial that is actually slower then what they think they can run, then they are "holding" some time. This means that they are going to either need to run the finish line really well and hope to have the better light, otherwise they will end up breaking out trying to get there first.
