As mentioned in another of your videos, bad lacing is so often bad lubrication. I had exactly the same problems as you had on this machine. HOWEVER, here's a tip. Use IPA first to free up and unstick all guides, rollers, springs, pulleys etc and THEN lubricate them. If you only lubricate they'll keep sticking so dissolve all the old stuff with the IPA first. Trust me ;-)
I had a bitch of a fault on PVW-2800 yesterday, just thought I'd share it with you (might come in handy!). Front panel was misbehaving - mostly random LEDs/illuminated buttons lighting erratically. Long story short, the rubber-like standoff blocks that each LED is mounted on had deteriorated to such an extent that they had not only become electrically conductive, but also extremely corrosive! The legs on the rev/still/fwd LEDs near the jog/shuttle had almost completely been eaten away. Still had weird issues after replacing these, and it turned out that the corrosive goo had also eaten a trace behind the shuttle/jog indicator LEDs. The trace had actually been broken, only the conductivity of the rubber mount goo was keeping it somewhat operational! Haven't opened up my BVWs to check if they use the same crappy parts, but no doubt these were used in more than just the PVW decks. In any case, definitely something worthy of preventative measures. Hopefully this will help someone out!
I had to raid a part from one myself on my "Sony Umatic video recorder which is neither Sony nor Umatic" video, I needed a switch for a Hi8 deck. But it's nice to have at least one of these machines in working order, it could be useful as a loan player.
Hmmm, that DAT at 31:35 is gorgeous !! I don't think 4K is worth the trouble, and also, I think your old camera looks way better ( skin tones look better to me , for example ) What model are your Sony camcorder and still camera ? Maybe your still camera has a bigger sensor and that is what is caussing the difference
I've been using the same Sony FDR-AX53 camcorder for about 6 months but now switched to 4k editing. But maybe I've been off-colour with a cold lately! I use various cameras for stills, some of them quite old Casio ones. You can see me repair that very DAT machine here: ua-cam.com/video/SsmkbsCC0iw/v-deo.html
Well done on fixing that pesky stuck arm, it seems to repeat fine now :-D i'm wondering if there is a near identical model with better video output choices, companys often reuse boards but maybe leave a section unpopulated for lesser models. I would imagine RGB out would not be hard to acheave from YVU.
There was a range of BVW decks which had better input/output options, but they were of course much more expensive, heavier and bulky than this. It wouldn't be worth adding better output connectors to this one now, since nearly all used BetacamSP players are pretty cheap.
Hey I picked up a BVW-35 portable, it works but when the TBC is switched on the video is black and white, is this normal? I'm using the composite output
@@video99couk Seems like the TBC is pretty unreliable on these portable decks. I assume I could try to remove the board that has the TBC circuit and replace it from a donor deck and see if changes anything. I'll take a look at the service manual.
hi to all i had to use this model as parts for my 75 decks and still the deck i moved parts to is still not right audio / video in and out is ok i watched the one where you had the head drum out of a 1800 deck i never had to do this because of all the mail about the head line up bbc audio tec told me never to un do any thing a round head drum good video to show it
Some 7 hours after uploading it, UA-cam has put this up only in HD and SD, the 4k version is still not available. I know it takes extra processing time with UA-cam, but at this rate, most of my subscribers will have viewed it already before the 4k version goes live.
hi that a ace plan as the unit's are very heavy i got the same deck is not working right some thing to do with the tape tenson last time i put a betamax tape in the audio was going at video high speed i was after one for a audio deck as they use a lot of power i think it's 85 VA on this deck i have worked on alot of deck this one has the same parts as the white front 4 channel i for get the model number as some are sony marked BCB 75 use the same parts i only use them for audio back up as i can keep the tapes at the right heat beware there's a man down in poole allways putting this model on ebay he's a con man i told ebay it end's for 99p and he never posts the unit out i won it lucky i was told he was a con man i lost 99p beware of ebay seller to all video fans there's sellers out there are bad names
Yes, last time I tried this, I got high speed sound and a mess of a picture, but on this occasion I didn't get anything, not even the counter running. Don't know why. These machines are literally worth about 99p these days. I think the deck shares parts with other BVW models.
The "office player" means that it served as a player in newsroom where reporters could review footage from the field and write down timecode
I think they were probably used with any rushes that were on Betacam or BetacamSP. I imagine that some producers probably had a BVW-22P at home.
4K definitely worth the trouble. Crystal clear viewing especially whilst trying to see the all those intricate parts

Last tested 24 February 1997 - exactly 23 years ago! (judging by the clock in the background, you recorded this on 24 February 2020)
I hadn't noticed that, well done!
The connector you point out at 2:29 was used in the Sony KX-14 CP1 video monitor. It's a video only connector, but it has some sort of RGB signal.
Nice to see somenone fixing these machines, most people tear them down.

When I used to work on mechanisms, I would always use a cassette with no tape in it. Just to make sure nothing was sticking. :)
4K is future proofing which is a good idea. Though like me, most people today are still on 1080p displays.

That will probably be a failure on the TBC panel. I also have a BVW-35 portable, and when I select TBC on that, the picture vanishes completely.

I got the 1800 alignment set up in the next UA-cam video, but it was quite fiddly.
Do you know if the Sony desktop player J3/J30 plays back both linear and FM audio tracks?
Yes they do. But I have found that if the tape is really noisy, the playback picture from a J3 is not as good as a UVW1200P.
hi 4k use alot of space in the editing i stopped using it

@@video99couk HD downconverted playback from a 4K source produces are far better result. So keep going with 4K recordings.
Maybe they wanted to see how the picture looks like, when it arrives at the couch potato.
