I have a VU meter/display board from a UVW-1800, though not sure if they are working. The donor unit they came from had a good power module that went into another dead UVW-1800 (that works now). But if I recall correctly, that donor unit stopped working and would power on, take and eject tapes, and only light up the eject/rec buttons. So not sure if that board combo was bad too.
Only if someone has a set of scrap display panels they can send me. It's not a machine I'm particularly desperate for so I won't be spending money to repair it.
I would suggest desoldering the display and fixing the power supply. Perhaps you could even figure out how to power it up from a lab supply to test separately.
80 volts, Eeek 😞 That line that showed 80 volts, did you do a continuity test from that line to the vu box ? It would give you an idea what group of components need replacing. Dont give up too easy.
The trouble is that there's almost certainly damage on the lower display panel. So there's no point trying to fix the cause of the over-voltage. It needs replacement panels.
Having trouble with a newly acquired UVW-1800, it takes a tape about half an inch in, holds it, and then rejects it, with an error 20-111 or 20-911, happens with large and small tapes. I tried swapping in a loading mechanism from my working UVW-1200, same issue. Both loading mechanisms work perfectly in the UVW-1200. Power supply issue?
I don't know. There's a service mode where you can operate parts individually, I mention this in ua-cam.com/video/V6HbV8Q1gqc/v-deo.html That mode might help you to narrow down the problem.
@@video99couk Figured it out: When I took the side panels off, it loaded completely. The screws on the right side were too long and interfering with the mechanism, it must have had rack mount handles installed at one point. New problem: It appears to have a tracking or tape path problem: When a tape plays you get clear video and sound for about a second, then it looks like it has a tracking problem. If I press down on the tape near the drum while it goes through the machine, the video and audio are perfect. Is there a way to adjust tracking on these machines? The posts appear to use a nut size smaller than 4mm (smallest size socket I have on-hand)
I have a sony uvw-1600 that I am not able to receive any video out. I can get audio. I can get the menu on a separate tv as I am trying to get the player to show footage on a separate. I have used s video and a/v cables. Any advice? Thanks.
So the menu appears on-screen but no image (using a Superimpose connector)? Go through the menu to see if you can call up the colour bars. If that's OK, is the picture black or grey? If grey it may be that the heads are all fouled. If black then it's probably an electronic fault, could be a bit more work.
@@video99couk Thank you for the response! I have the video 2 connected to a tv displaying the maintenance menu and and a s-video line going into a recording device. It did display a picture briefly and went away on the recording device. Black screen present and the recording device is showing a "line" present. Audio can be heard but just black screen. Any help much appreciated. I have about 100-200 beta master tapes I am looking to convert.
My VU meter stopped working on my DVW-A500 suddenly and yup - sure enough - one of the caps had failed. I really should recap the whole works but don't use it often enough to justify that sort of...self-inflicted wound.
hi am in the same way i am looking for a power unit for this model if some one had the same model i take power unit you could have the rest i have 2 all ready and one with no power unit
So heart-warming to see your son putting down his phone and getting involved. Very astute remarks about throwaway society.
Great video, your assistant is also fantastic. Thanks for posting!
this is helpful, i have an 1800 and dread the day I have to recap. Seems it may be better to do it sooner than ever..
I've not dared inspect the same part on my 1800 either!

Might well have been the same problem.

Holy crap! What's next? A part 3 of this?

Trouble is, the 80V has almost certainly fried the main display.
Just subscribed and you don't have an American accent 👍

Did you ever find the difference between the 1400 & 1800 ?
I believe the 1800 has a full TBC but the 1400 has a simpler video stabiliser. That said, it works so well that I can't tell the difference.
@@video99couk is audio the same on both? I'm not using these for video

A full re-cap on a DVW-A500 would be a huge undertaking.

Don't use a betacam SP tape in a domestic Betamax. It's like drowning in chocolate.
I never do, but I know some people who have done so and actually they work fine. There's a risk of extra head wear though.
