I respect the work he puts into the videos, but Technology Connections just has this sneer about some of what he covers that puts me right off. I don't watch obscure tech videos to get told how stupid an idea is.
@@mariteaux His humor is one of the reasons I do watch him. There are plenty of dry UA-camrs in the world, so a little bit of sarcasm and wit is always welcomed to me.
If you need SP tapes I have a bunch from CBS San Diego from late 2001, mostly B-Roll and bloopers, including famous news anchor Peter Jennings. They worked fine in my 1800 and 1200. I also have one of the larger format Betacam SP tapes, but I think it's blank.
There's something to be said about finding the surprises on those old, mystery recordings. I'm sure a good majority of them are just mundane things, but you never know who's precious memories are carelessly thrown out. Also, weird local commercials.
I've seen some reports that the TBC in this can be used during passthrough, so you might find that it stabilizes video better than your Hotronic AP41. It also has an external TBC controller you can use to adjust the proc amp inside.
I gotta wonder if error codes on Sony camcorders have 2 digits separated by colons because that was how error codes looked on Betacam decks.. Probably not, but I haven't looked at any documentation so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As a side note, you can play betaSP tapes on a standard Betacam deck. I have a few BetaSP tapes when I was in the field. Just be careful because BetaSP is metal (not like Beta, oxide) and it’ll wear the head faster.
why has there been multiple recent videos by many youtubers of the Betacam SP format? Why is this trending? I used them for years at the local TV station I worked at. It was dependable but then Digital came in.
Well, you seem to have stereo audio at least as the spoken parts were on the right and the music on the left. (According to the display!). I was thinking maybe a pal/ntsc issue, or sync issue of some kind. (I'm just totally guessing though).
hi my bro put some betacam tape in the 100ub by misstake he just did now know about betacam i know about the format now and the tapes do on for a very long time i have not got to worry about decks going bad i have alot of working decks price of them has come down big time
BETACAM can be used in betamax betacam sp tapes will kill the heads in betamax there's alot of betacam tapes out there i have 100's of them new sealed it's now getting harder to find tapes this model doe's go bad i have worked on 8 of this model and i had to use decks as parts as well the caps in the VU meter go bad and need to be cheanged over with the micro fuse 500ma
Call it a hunch, but I don't think it's the same person--the one in the search is only 40, which would have made him a little kid when that wedding footage was shot (early 90's).
Eventually...assuming I can get good playback. This was just intended as a quick, first test. Assuming everything works, this'll ultimately get a Ben's Junk.
Betacam SP should be backward compatible with standard Betacam. I'll need to dig out (or fleabay if I don't have any) an SP tape to say for certain. I see no reason to believe (at the moment) that I did anything wrong.
@@OddityArchive in my experience betamax tapes played on a betacam machine exhibit what you demonstrated. being on this side of the screen makes it difficult to trouble shoot. LOL

1. Standard Betacam is backwards compatible with Betacam SP. 2. Betacam SP tapes came in two sizes--full, and a smaller Betamax-sized cassette. 3. Someone was using labels from Betamax tapes on some of my standard Betacam tapes. 4. Though not discussed or implied in the video, Betacam footage can be recorded onto Betamax tape stock in a pinch, but, due to tape thickness and speed differences, is not really recommended. 5. The first tape I put in was one that somebody had recorded standard Betamax footage onto (and quite possibly damaged the heads of their Betamax deck in the process). I had no way of knowing this until I popped in the tape. 6. I have since acquired a mix of Betacam and (both sizes of) Betacam SP tapes. All play properly. As stated in this video, this was intended as a quick test and nothing more.

Yes, I'm well aware of the Technology Connections video. The timing was 100% pure coincidence.
Alec from Technology Connections and Ben are the same person... prove me wrong.
I've never met him, but I get the vibe that we're polar opposites.

An Oddity Archive video on a Monday? Must be a very early Christmas miracle.

That BetaCam deck looks great beside the PVM. That is some beautiful pro-grade Sony equipment
9:47 Dirty Head? Nope, that's the next tape - the wedding night! 😁
These chipmunks were 10,000x more tolerable than when the other ones sing Christmas tunes.
(I’m anti fun)
It’s awesome to see a new Oddity Archive episode on a Monday. Keep up the great work Ben!
Maybe RedLetterMedia have some leftover betacam tapes from when they did wedding videos.
I've got a nice stack of tapes, I just need to dig them out.
Ah, a little Gato Berberi in the video! That is a jam on the sax if I do say so myself!
Last time I was this early to something, Betamax was a viable contender to VHS.

I’ve worked with Betacam until the mid 2000s and always find funny that almost everyone had the same VT model, the UVW-1800
I think that tape was hit with a bulk eraser... I have some SVHS tapes that looked similar.
I was under the assumption that only the BVW series of decks played back standard Betacam not SP and not the cheaper UVW?

4:10 idk 🤔 Benny Boy that doesn’t look like BNC cable to me…. Looks more like good ol Rca
The connectors on the VCR are BNC. I don't own any BNC component cables (yet).
Well if it''s the same guy who comes up on google, pretty sure the marriage ended, or divorce papers are on their way to prison as we speak.
Oh wow. I wonder if that's why the tapes got sold. 🙂
