I don’t know what the amateur fluid artists world would do without you David. Every-time I find myself with questions you are always the best option. I don’t just want to know…I want to know how why and when & you fit the bill perfectly. TY!
You always seem to post the exact video I need at the exact time! I watch a ton of pour painting creators but you remain my number one go to and always will. I'm loyal to LeftBrainedArtist. Thank you, David, for helping me become the artist YOU told me I could be when I was ready to give up. I've told so many people and new artists that you truly are the reason I didn't give up. I just wanted you to know how important to my artistic journey you have been. You genuinely do make a difference. You should be proud of yourself, my friend. Thanks!!!!
Your awesome when it comes to analogies, and it's appropriated. I NEVER leave comments but ive commented on a few of yours and just in the last 10 minutes. I've been watching you since I began painting and you have saved me so much time, money, and headache! Thank you from the bottom of my heart!

There’s only one new one there right now and it’s where have I been. I took a year and a half off but am slowly being inspired to create more and share new things so new videos will eventually be forthcoming 🤗
Thanks so much for this video David. I have been using house paint as a base and keep getting failed pours. I even thin down the house paint with floetrol and water and still am getting failed pours. I am going back to regular paint for the base coat and keep trying. I just appreciate you so much for all that you do for us.
It's easy David. You're a pleasure to watch and I always learn something. Thankyou for your time in not only researching the content of your videos, but also for sharing with the rest of the world❣️
Bravo! I have just started researching this type of painting method and all the websites, other UA-cam channels attempt to explain the method and methodology but fail. You are my hero. Amazing knowledge, explanation and presentation!
Thanks so much. This video has warned me what to expect when I will try to use the colored house paints. I usually use Behre, but couldn't fined it so I am going to try the Valspar instead. Thanks for all of your videos. They make a difference.

It may seem like I’m obsessed with your videos, and I am. I have to share how awesome and useful your videos are so I hope the comment bombing is ok! Your videos have been perfect as I get back into art and trying paint pouring. You have a video for every question or challenge I’ve had along the way, and I appreciate how you experiment, separate variables and keep track of results so see all The ways to use these materials. I learn a lot!
Hi this is Veni. So I watched this video. I’m very much a novice. I’m also a science graduate, so I understand your explanations really well. No if I don’t use the latex paint what should I use on my canvas before pouring and should be thin paint.
Use the exact same mix that you have with your other paints. That is the mot common base coat. Not thicker, not thinner, same consistency and same mixture (paint/medium).
@@LeftBrainedArtist thank you so much. I’m a senior who has always been a little artistic and got into this couple of years, not knowing anything. Thank you for all your research and imparting your knowledge to me.
I'm also wondering if it makes a difference whether the house paint has primer in it or not. Maybe. Thanks for all these interesting videos! Very helpful.
Paint and primer are two totally different coatings. Even if someone is advertising as a paint/primer in one look on the back...it will tell you to prime.
@@FeatheredDreamStudio this is something I don't understand enamel paint does cloud pour so when I when you are told get Behr deep base I get that ..it's the white,Behr satin enamel that I am saying is turning my blooms into more of a cloud pour..I get about the mixing for your paints, UPDATE GILDEN INTERIOR WHITE.. Working good for me.
@@carolynbrew3770 deep base has different fillers (less actually) that allow for a lot more tint (without compromising the actual paint product) like blue and black. Keeping in mind, I am speaking from my training working at Sherwin Williams. Artist pigments are slightly different but kinda work at doing the same thing. They add color to a base. White base is thicker because it has more solids. Solids being clay, shells, etc. It will be heavier and stay lighter. That's why it takes very little black to darken anything. There's more "true color" and less solids (the white or off white base product). So...because so much tint has to be added to make darker colors that base will be much lighter. There are some ultra deep bases that are almost transparent. If you add too much of a darker base without tint it will (basically) dry cloudy. Next time you use house paint, have them add at least a small amount of tint...or stick with extra white base. If you have access to a Sherwin Williams go get sample quarts of all the different bases and play with them to see how they react. I hope this helps!
Excellent information for beginners. And people like me, somewhere in-between novice and several miles from being a Sara Taylor. (I've wept watching her paint!)
I know right? I love her work. So hard to reproduce though. She's been doing that one technique for years though so I shouldn't feel too bad and you shouldn't either.
I am cleaning out our basement to try to use up left over house paints. I am finding everything from enamel, latex, Rustoleum, and acrylic paints in Matt, semi-gloss, and satin finish. I loved this experiment you presented! I am trying to get good cell activity, lacing and pearl and/or cloud cells. I use pour, dutch, and swipe techniques. After this video, I understand that I do not want to use high gloss enamel. But my specific question is this: are there any specific types of house pains that I should NOT use? Due to chemical reactions etc. I hope to use Behr 3800 for my pillow action but I hope to use up some of these left over paints in the basement.
You don't want to mix oil based paints but anythign acrylic or latex based should be just fine. Read the label just in case there are specific interactions that they call out.
I've always loved buying the "oops" house paint samples at my local hardware store, because they're such a great value, but THIS explains all of the issues I've had with some of them! Pesky densities...
What can I as a beginner use as a pillow base? I don't want the paint to roll over each other like what happens when they don't use a base or to little base.
use the exact same paint as the rest of your paints. Either cover the canvas with it before you pour or after you ahve done your pour put that color around your puddle and then tilt from there. I have a video about this here - ua-cam.com/video/q-IZCgkrzIc/v-deo.html

The only way I know is to use thicker paints which mix WAY less than thin paints. Otherwise they are going to mix and you need a separating color in between.
Hello! Different topic.... Someone said that adding vegetable glycerin to acrylic paint will give the paint a beautiful shine. Do you think glycerin would interfere with the final resin or varnish coat? Thanks!

The Behr. 8300 deep base is not used as the pillow as you said, but used as the medium along with varnish to mix your colors with. You are incorrect here. I’ve been doing the bloom technique for over 1 year
I'm confused; most house paint is automatically acrylic, which is SO different from latex house paint, the main difference between the two is their ingredients...both are water-based but, acrylic is more adhesive and elastic than latex, and IS acrylic paint so should be used in acrylic paint pours. Why did you single out the latex paints, which no one would use anyway, unless they are doing latex paint pours?
Most of less expensive paints sold and Lowes and Home Depot here in the states are latex paints. The higher quality paints (and therefore more expensive) tend to lean more toward Acrylic paints. That also depends on interior and exterior and the brand of paint also. Considering most of the people watching my channel are very cost conscious that is where most testing comes from.
People are getting interested in acrylic pouring from Sheleeart bloom techniques and thinking they should use latex paint to pour with. That is a specific technique that is difficult to master, albeit creates beautiful art, and I don't recommend that people start with that even though that is what they are seeing on their Instagram and UA-cam feeds.
