The greatest reinvention of a whole album ever. Ryan should be truly proud of the greatest compliment ever paid. To a fellow artist. Taylor should be be proud to be so eloquently honored.
He's proving something here - that taylor swifts lyrics are amazing and most people discard them either because of the genre they belong to or because they don't like her.
@@michellesupport89 It's because she's crazy, nuts, insane, or co-dependant to name a few. Her fame comes from being attractive, and dressing sexy dancing as if she was in a bedroom with a man.
The irony is stinging and beautiful here - what a ballsy thing to do at this stage of his career! But what has always been so cool about Ryan is he understands good songs - and boy - tongue in cheek or not - he absolutely delivers here. On a scale of 10 - its a frikin 11. Home run Ryan! Thanks for being such a authentic artist who has NO fear of the industry powers. You ae a hero.
+mrwhitford1966 Wouldn't say it' ballsy and more of a way to still stay relevant and make money in a rap and Taylor Swift obsessed market. But regardless good stuff.
As someone who has listened to Ryan Adams for almost 10 years, it's decent. It doesn't blow me away by any means like many of his albums have, but I don't think that was the effect he was attempting to achieve. This man is such a prolific and dynamic song-writer, and whatever criticism he takes for recording a pop record like this will undoubtedly happen. To the T-Swift fanboys and fangirls, this man has been writing outstanding music for 25 years. If you like the covers of these songs, give his catalog a listen.
+zpflegh1 Lol Ryan Adams has a good voice and excellent guitar skills, but has a pretty forgettable catalog. Pretty much everything he recorded after heartbreaker was a crock of self-absorbed bullshit he expected us to go along with. He thinks too highly of himself to record anything as sincere as that album ever again. Listen to the lyrics on his latest EP and you'll hear flashes of his songwriting potential, but you'll also see he hardly takes his music seriously. It's all a game to him. Kind of a bummer for such a talented guy.
@@yahstinoor maybe Heartbreaker was just his masterpiece and he’s been trying to live up to that ever since. Songwriting is incredibly fucking difficult. It’s not easy to continue to write mind blowing material consistently. Some stuff is just better than others
I think it's an awesome take of 1989. It is so different than the original version, yet so good. Who cares if you like or don't like Taylor Swift or Ryan Adams. This is good stuff.
When I first heard this cover, I thought the lyrics didn't match the music but I realized he is singing from a confessional point of view while Taylor's was tongue in cheek. I like how this cover brings such a sad perspective to these lyrics.
I stared into space for a good long while when I was reminded that Pitchfork did not review Taylor Swift’s 1989 but did review Ryan Adams’s cover album of Taylor Swift’s 1989.
This whole 1989 CD is just stunning! And Mr Whitford is right - Ryan Adams just blew the industry's mind in a GOOD way! Well Done, Ryan. These are great songs. And the ironic compliment is beautiful and yet biting. Stunning CD from an American treasure by the name of Ryan Adams.
Just downloaded the album from iTunes. I was determined I was gonna hate this album. I thought my fave musician had lost his mind. Turns out Ryan knows what he's doing, as usual, blowing my mind! I'm flashing back to the first time I listened to Heartbreaker and Gold and falling in love all over again.
It's kind of presumptuous to assume all Taylor Swift fans didn't know who Ryan Adams was before... I've been listening to him since I was thirteen and I'm twenty-five now. We are a fandom of diverse tastes and backgrounds, not a monolith.
I remember in grade 9 when someone did a project in English class about Ryan Adams. After that I went out and bought his album and have loved his music ever since. I'm 30 now. And this album is great. And so is the swift version
+Túlio Brunhara I heard his cover of Wonderwall in the OC and that got me interested in checking him out. His style is very up my alley. Just because I also enjoy Taylor Swift doesn't mean I can't like other types of music.
+Daniella Robins yeah I agree, I'm a Taylor Swift fan and I've listened to Ryan Adams since I saw a news clip about his video for "New York New York". I was interested so I did a bit of research and listened to a few of his songs and I really liked him! I also loved "Wonderwall" and I actually heard his version before I heard the Oasis version, both are amazing though!
All of his renditions make me reminiscent of a really amazing relationship with a really awesome guy that ended for no apparent reason...and I've never even dated anybody. I'm so confused, but in the best way possible :)
I'm late to the table, literally - both in this song and post in replying. I have seen Ryan Adams and love his music, yet I had not heard this song til tonight. Beautiful!
soooo beautiful...his voice and music is perfect for a bath, some candles, chocolate and just relax listen this awesome cover. love the part with strings!!!
Just saw this tape on urban outfitters website and figured I'd look at it. Jesus Christ this is incredible. Reminds me of Elliot Smith. Definitely buying this tape..
+D'andre Chesterfield +D'andre Chesterfield This is not only pretentious, it is inaccurate. Unless your formula for "real" is sad acoustic covers. Don't get me wrong, I love Ryan Adams and indie sadness is basically my favorite genre (Elliott Smith anyone?) while pop is my least favorite. But Taylor Swift is far from plastic. Just because she speaks to the emotions of teenage girls instead of college-aged dudes, doesn't make her music less "authentic".
+Alex D Well dude taking selfies of his muscles, let me help you… Some music has soul, some music doesn't. "Most" pop music is soulless and is designed to NOT make you reflect on yourself or life. It only engages surface level emotions and is made more for consumption. What RA has attempted to do is inject some sincerity into TS songs. In language you might understand. Ryan Adams is keeping it real
+Ellen Z My opinion has more to do with production and using real instruments and real musicians rather than computers to make the music. I don't know if she uses auto tune but I wouldn't be surprised, it's kind of industry standard. I know she plays acoustic guitar but her songs from what I heard a lot her songs are more like club dance songs.
Nothing you said has anything to do with realness and authenticity. From your description anything that is produced isn't real. Anything using tech isn't real and as long as you use "real" instruments than your music is authentic. So Radiohead isn't real? Nine Inch Nails isn't real? Actually from your description early Taylor Swift music IS real because she used to use "real" instruments for her songs. You are literally judging music based on the fanbase rather than the music. You speak like you know nothing about music.
oops..forgot, I played on this tune...absolutely lovely, many thanks to Ryan for asking me to join in the fun, and to Taylor for her gorgeous tune, and the bottle of champagne!
My God, how beautiful. I repent for my past sin of dismissing Taylor Swift. These lyrics are beautiful and Ryan gives them a pain-filled life full of love and heartache.
It's so weird how this cover makes the lyrics come off so much more deep and meaningful when they're the same exact same lyrics lol. Just goes to show it's not what you say it's how you say it
You have to admit Taylor is a decent song writer, but I didn't realize how good this song was until Ryan put his spin on it. Life is crazy as sh*t sometimes.

This mutt is talking eloquence..hilarious.
He's proving something here - that taylor swifts lyrics are amazing and most people discard them either because of the genre they belong to or because they don't like her.
+Guila A lot of Taylor haters out there who never give her a chance.
I think she's an example of a good songwriter who's hindered by the pop production, which I find really difficult to listen to.
I have a friend who downloaded his cover of the album and showed it to a bunch of people who "hate Taylor Swift". All these people loved the songs!

Say what you want about Ryan Adams, the man is an extraordinary talent.
This whole album is tragically underrated.
Servo underrated? The original won AOT at the Grammys
I've span Ryan's version of this album 5x as many as TS's original. And TS's original was magnificent.
