DS Download Play is truly where we peaked with technology. I have so many great memories playing over local wireless with friends who didn’t always have a copy of a game. Nintendo’s generosity during this time might never be matched again.
i was a very introverted kid and didn’t really make much friends growing up yet i remember for a field trip we had in elementary school i overheard a lot of people in my class were going to bring their DS’s to play mario kart and pictochat over wireless play on the bus ride there so i decided to bring mine as well being able to join anonymously and just have fun with everyone else was a key memory of mine i won’t forget, i still remember people getting frustrated saying “whoever kept getting 1st in mario kart was so good” 🤭
I used to love doing download play with a friend that had Mario Kart DS, when i saw Shy Guy it blew my 6 year old mind and it's still one of my coolest gaming memories ever!!
Ironically, this video came just as I was downloading a bunch of DS roms off the internet as I intend to gift my DSi XL to my girlfriend for her birthday and wanted to stuff it with a bunch of software in advance. We both love your videos btw, keep up the amazing work
me and my sister had decided to ban stealing each other's stars, so we could only knock them off the other, but then had to let the star go. It wasn't until recently, over 10 years later, that I learned how fun stealing stars was, playing with our other younger brother
DS Download Play defined my childhood, I remember my friends and I just called it *"connect"* since we didn't know the actual term, so basically it would be like *"Hey, do you guys wanna connect on Mario Kart?"* or *"Wanna connect on Mario Party?"*
I loved Mario Kart DS download play on Friday afternoons during "Golden Time". What I *didn't* love was that one kid who'd see me in 1st and say "He's winning again! Get him!"
Me and my friend were huge Metroid fans growing up. Prime Hunters' multiplayer was a huge boost in our friendship at the time, and we still love Metroid even now! We talk about Dread and the upcoming Prime 4 with great interest.
DS Download Play was so important to my childhood, and I wish other consoles still had a similar feature. So many of my favorite gaming memories with friends or my siblings came from the fact that we only needed one cartridge between all of us.
yess i remember playing these games during sleepovers!! especially the mario balloon one! idk if it was download play but i also remember running around with my friends in unova (pkmn black/white) and in each other’s animal crossing towns
I gotta say, some of my most cherished childhood memories were me and my siblings and extended familial siblings all at our aunt's house with our DSs playing mario kart from my copy as well as us separating to opposite sides of the house and sending messages to each other in the Pictochat. I also miss Flipnote studio and all of us sharing ones we found with each other and laughing at them, good times!
Thanks randy moon i certainly can't see any souls trapped in your eyes begging for help, great video as always. I'm glad at least Valve has been letting people share games via Steam Family system for a while now. Their recent update/revamp to the system now lets people share their libraries and play (different) games at the same time from each other's libraries. Or if a family has multiple copies of the same game multiple people can play at the same time too. So, the download play spirit kind of lives on.
soooo obsessed with you content and this one really hit home EVERY game you mentioned was a classic in me and my older brothers location it was my favorite way to play games together during long car rides, at family gatherings etc. I MISS IT SO BAD
great video!! it's very interesting to hear you talking about your experience with the DS. I myself never had one, but I could feel your nostalgia in my heart, specially when you mention playing with the kids of you parent's friends.
One of my most precious memories of the DS was, me and my friends playing Mario Kart DS on the 8 hours bus drive to italy with our school level in 9th grade. We played those 8 maps in download-play to death
I remember finding download play so convenient as a kid, particularly when I got to play games that my friends had but I didn't. I never had Mario 64, but I loved playing multiplayer with my best friend and his siblings. Mario Party DS and Mario Kart DS were also a ton of fun to play with friends. One you didn't mention here was New Super Mario Bros, which had a bunch of multiplayer minigames, a couple of which were lifted from Super Mario 64. Playing Luigi poker was probably the first exposure I had to any sort of card games, now that I think about it.
DS Dowload Play was awesome, and it still is. My cousins and I played Mario Kart and Mario Party via download play when we were around 8 years old and we still do that to this day sometimes, and we're 20-somethings now. I heard from a friend that when she went on a trip with some other people our age, they played Mario Kart DS on the bus to their destination. It's so cool that people still love their DS.
When I start developing games for the M-Con (vid on my channel) I’m adding this feature 100% it’s just so good. It makes so much since. I want to bring back the cool social experience we used to have in gaming. You should be able to airdrop a game to someone on mobile and join them in multiplayer that way. Even if you don’t have the game
Happy to see someone talk about the demos distributed via the Nintendo Channel :) I have fond memories of replaying demos on my DS over and over and over like Rhythm Heaven, Ivy the Kiwi?, and Spore
DS download play was a HUGE part of my childhood, I remember playing it all the time. I would play with my cousin, the kids on the bus after school, and the kids in my neighborhood for hours. I made sure I always had my DS on me.
DS download play was great, when I first got my DS it was my birthday, and the last day of the term, so we were allowed to bring games in to play. My parents couldn't afford many games, and my DS was second hand, but getting to play Mario Kart without owning it made my day. It's why shy guy has a special place in my heart to this day
There was this one time my sibling and I were playing Shorty Scorers (Mario Party DS) against Expert CPUs Waluigi and Peach. Their defense was impenetrable-we could not hold onto the ball long enough to get to their goal. As they approached ours, guess what we opted to do instead... We stunlocked them both by repeatedly attacking them until time was up. I was like, "Fight back! Fight back!" like they were getting jumped. No one scored, so it ended in a tie, but we were laughing hard for like 10 minutes straight.
I wanted to say that Nintendo mentality back in those days was so so different… there was so much love between them and their fans!! I remember that you could write letters to Nintendo and they would reply to almost all of them with little stickers and cute stuff!! You had the Club Nintendo where you could get really cool rewards when you got enough games!! Also, in PKMN B&W, the online was top tier : you could make some Pokémon fall asleep and play with them and win rare Pokémon!!! i am truly mad Nintendo stopped experimenting as much as they did before!! I mean Switch was kinda experimental but not as much as the 3DS imo: while Switch is experimental in the concept, it lacks in the UI and the experience. If i compare it to my fave console of all time : DS/ 3DS. They pushed the concept experimentation so far that you feel it in the UI !! Things like Pictochat or StreetPass were WILD and the fact they stopped developing fun features like those on the switch piss me off. We should ban Nintendo just for that, rn all they do is remakes and make us pay for Switch Online. Come on man
Yeah i am truly pissed by Nintendo, and this is also a love letter to all those small yet unique features Nintendo consoles had who made them go to the top
you are so right abt that kirby game, my sister and i played that so much! i also miss 3ds streetpass, my friends would all bring our systems to wherever we went over the weekend, collect new puzzle pieces no one else had yet, and trade them at school. peak technology
I have been watching your videos for a couple of days now and I always thought you were like a huge channel with at least 150k subs, but now I just saw your subs counter and you deserve so much more than that! You will grow your channel in a blink of an eye with quality videos like this. Keep up the great work!
I love your videos. I grew up with the ds playing download play with my siblings friends and even random kids on the bus. Made a lotta friends through it 🤘
I remember mariokart 7 download play- that christmas was the first time I beat my sister and cousins at any game, 7's rainbow road will always have a special place in my heart
My PEAK childhood memory is waiting for my mom in a hair salon and using dowload play to play with some other kids that also happened to have a ds with them
Download play is how me and my friends played Mario Kart DS during middle school. It's a neat demo like feature for your friends who didn't have the game and it.
I hope this gets more views just for the fact that a lot of the tech for this is very overlooked and barely anyone including deep subs even talk about it very much. It obviously does what it was intended to do but it would be cool to see devs incorporate it for GBA link cable support or even just more games to be compatible with nds-bootstrap. I find some games just straight up don’t work with DL play in twilight menu.
I remember playing guitar hero tour on DS, and I played with some random kid in middle school. Both needed the game, but didnt matter which one you had. It was pretty cool. Also, I like your stare 0_0.
One of my favorite memories of middle school was on any field trip everybody that could, would bring their DS along. We would then have a party of 8 people in a download play mariokart race and have the best time ever in the busride to the field trip. I barely even remember the field trips itself because the busride mariokart games were way more fun than the field trip.
Kirby Squeak Squad was PEAK! I loved combining powers (lightning sword) and saving my favorites powers for later, the lil treasure dance at the end of levels ugh it’s so good
One of my favourite childhood memories was when a bunch of my friends and I were hanging out, including our younger siblings (so there was maybe 6 of us) and we all played hide and seek in the house except everyone who was hiding communicated through picto chat so we were all scheming against the seeker. It was a lot of fun.
Man pretty much every game title mentioned in the video made up a huge part of my childhood. I always loved how I could tell my friends on the bus rides home that they didn't need a copy of the game to play with me. Good times
I never had a DS but at one of my friend's sleepovers we would take turns with with the DSes that were available and play Mario Kart over download play. It was a lot of fun. We especially liked all going backwards so we could keep driving forever when it was our turns
dawg at the end of my freshman year like 3 years ago, i brought all my old ds's and me and my friends just played ds download play all day, that shit was so fun
I don’t have siblings and I didn’t have peers my age who had a DS (or at least peers I could readily hang out with), but I still have fond enough memories with Mario Kart and Mario Party (ESPECIALLY MARIO PARTY) with my cousin/s. Download Play is something I’m nostalgic over, and I appreciate your video for resurfacing that warm feeling lol. I do appreciate being able to do things online, but there is really just a certain charm in the local multiplayer that Download Play allows. I’m definitely getting friends to use Download Play again (among other things I feel nostalgic over, like Beyblade lol)
Download play was such a good idea of nintendo. I still enjoy it with my friends from time to time. For example I was still in school till 2019 and when ever we did a school trip many classmates would bring their DS. Or a few weeks ago I was in cologne with a friend and my girlfriend for visiting the gamescom and we took our DSeseseses with us and played some games after a long day. I really love the DS and 3DS and everything these consoles have to offer
I remember playing the download play in Mario Kart DS and The Legendary Starfy all the time back in the day… also yeah you kind of are starring into my soul, that’s crazy
Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days and Mario Party DS were my favorite multiplayer experiences on the DS. Funnily enough, I also lost my Mario Party DS cart some time ago, and it's the only one missing in my DS game collection.
It was absolutely brilliant, when I was staying at my cousin's I would stay up all night with them playing Mario Kart DS and Mario Party DS with one-card multiplayer from our respective bedrooms. I never had a Game Boy link cable, the DS just made it so easy to play with anyone who had the console too. Speaking of which I remember really liking the ability to download temporary game demos, I remember downloading one every time I went to a Walmart
That connecting screen noise brought back core memories of playing Mario Kart DS with my sister as a kid. That game was great. Shame we lost the cartridge
You're so right that DS download play was such a fun way to play multiplayer!! I miss DS era in general, but man.. my personal favourite memory of it is on a bus to school camp, my classmates were playing COD or some other fighting game, that only allowed 4 players. I'd been playing Pokemon Diamond but I closed it to connect & steal a player slot lol. They didn't recognise my DS display name and even when one of them came looking for who was connecting he didn't think it was me because why tf would the Pokemon girl be joining? Especially when this mysterious player was actually kinda good at the game! I've never been interested in shooting games but landing 3 headshots in one round all while they're shouting "who's even doing this? I want to join my friend's game!" is one of my favourite memories of primary school ^^
I have plenty of memories playing multiplayer with DS Download Play. My favorite was Sonic Rush, IIRC, the game actually let you play all the game's levels in battle mode. Also did it with Mario Kart DS and Need for Speed Carbon.
I remember playing Lego Star Wars 2 with Download play. It was a little battle mode where everyone can choose a bounty hunter and fight it out on a few different maps
Mario Kart DS and SM64DS were the best, such a forward thinking method of multiplayer, especially when you could both have download play friends without the game playing on the Download Play version, and your friends who did own the game could join with the full version, the PSP could never (even though I still love the PSP)
Some of my fondest childhood memories are using download play with my brother and cousins. Edit: HOLY HECK YOU ALSO COVERED THE WII DEMOS! I had so much fun downloading and playing Wii demos on my DS. My favorites were the Ghost Trick and Ace Attorney: Investigations ones. Started me off young on murder mystery games and my AA love has lasted 15 years.
I wish i had experienced this era of gaming with the DS man, sadly did not have one, me and my siblings were xbox black box fans and ps2 as well, I also still play mario 64 and smash bros 64 to this day, incredible to say the least.
fantastic content, i remember playing so much mario party with my family on download play. I decided to leave a completely random list of games I played on it below: Super Mario 64 DS Tank Beat Age of Empires: Mythologies Ridge Racer DS Elite Beat Agents Intellivision Lives Nacho Libre Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop Over the Hedge MySims Yoshi Touch and Go Suzuki Super-Bikes II: Riding Challenge Over the Hedge (again) Ultimate Mortal Kombat Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy
there’s an online recreation of nsmbds’s mario vs. luigi mode that allows more than 2 ppl to play and several customization options. brought me back to when my sister and i would play soooo much together cool video!
I never had any Nintendo products (my dad worked in IT we got computer stuff for free and he could pirate so I never really minded) but your videos remind me of sitting in like the kids area while my mum does something and watch an older kid play their gameboy and just explain to me what they were doing and why
never played ds games on the download play mode, but seeing the ds download station made me nostalgic, even though ive never went to one in my whole life lol
look man, i didn’t lose mario party
Smaller sibling alert. I do not trust this statement as an older sibling.
yooooo whats up
@@malevolentia28 as a smeller sibling, i agree with conditions that you let me win at mario kart
I'm sad, I recently lost my copy due to moving around too much, same with pokemon saffire and some other gameboy games.

being able to join anonymously and just have fun with everyone else was a key memory of mine i won’t forget, i still remember people getting frustrated saying “whoever kept getting 1st in mario kart was so good” 🤭
That's so funny that you kept winning haha
This is so cute and awesome! Thank u for sharing!
As a foe, I just want to say thank you for acknowledging those of us who have subscribed in order to plot your downfall

Mario vs. Luigi was the most competitive thing I ever played in my life. So many fucking fights cause of that game. Legendary times.
The fights I had with my siblings on long car rides were unmatched. My Luigi was just different
me and my sister had decided to ban stealing each other's stars, so we could only knock them off the other, but then had to let the star go. It wasn't until recently, over 10 years later, that I learned how fun stealing stars was, playing with our other younger brother

Super Smash Bros. for 3DS missed the opportunity of a LIFETIME by not having download play!
It could have worked even if they limit the numbers of characters you could choose from.
There was a free demo you could download for free multiplayer
I loved Mario Kart DS download play on Friday afternoons during "Golden Time". What I *didn't* love was that one kid who'd see me in 1st and say "He's winning again! Get him!"
NEW RANDY MOON VIDEO JUST DROPPED LET'S FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Me and my friend were huge Metroid fans growing up. Prime Hunters' multiplayer was a huge boost in our friendship at the time, and we still love Metroid even now! We talk about Dread and the upcoming Prime 4 with great interest.
I love your relaxed, nostalgic vibe. You seem like someone I'd hang out with, I'm glad I get to with your videos!
*DS. Download. Play.*
*Intense stare.*
I love that.
DS Download Play was so important to my childhood, and I wish other consoles still had a similar feature. So many of my favorite gaming memories with friends or my siblings came from the fact that we only needed one cartridge between all of us.
"justice for squeak squad" a true statement has never been uttered

I gotta say, some of my most cherished childhood memories were me and my siblings and extended familial siblings all at our aunt's house with our DSs playing mario kart from my copy as well as us separating to opposite sides of the house and sending messages to each other in the Pictochat. I also miss Flipnote studio and all of us sharing ones we found with each other and laughing at them, good times!
Thank you Randy Moon

None of my friends growing up had DS’s to use download play with, so this was super cool. Thanks Ms. Moon.
You should do a video on local multiplayer/split screen and how it's kinda become a lost art similarly to stuff like DS download play.
Mario Kart download play on the bus ride home from middle school was PEAK
mario party ds was the perfect road trip game growing up, i to this day still believe it is the greatest mario party
great video!! it's very interesting to hear you talking about your experience with the DS. I myself never had one, but I could feel your nostalgia in my heart, specially when you mention playing with the kids of you parent's friends.
your videos are so soothing and perfect to have on when i want to learn and relax! keep it up!

I want to join my friend's game!" is one of my favourite memories of primary school ^^
the kirby ones and spirit tracks/phantom hourglass went soooooo hard, very fond memories of playing them w siblings as a kid :')) !!!
Mario Kart DS and SM64DS were the best, such a forward thinking method of multiplayer, especially when you could both have download play friends without the game playing on the Download Play version, and your friends who did own the game could join with the full version, the PSP could never (even though I still love the PSP)
i love download play. i play mario kart with my brother to this day, and i have plenty of childhood memories using it :,)
Some of my fondest childhood memories are using download play with my brother and cousins.
Edit: HOLY HECK YOU ALSO COVERED THE WII DEMOS! I had so much fun downloading and playing Wii demos on my DS. My favorites were the Ghost Trick and Ace Attorney: Investigations ones. Started me off young on murder mystery games and my AA love has lasted 15 years.
played a lot of mario kart & 64 with friends during lunch periods, was big cool & fun
I wish i had experienced this era of gaming with the DS man, sadly did not have one, me and my siblings were xbox black box fans and ps2 as well, I also still play mario 64 and smash bros 64 to this day, incredible to say the least.
Good work
This is a certified randy moon classic

Elite Beat Agents
Intellivision Lives
Nacho Libre
Tamagotchi Connection: Corner Shop
Over the Hedge

Ultimate Mortal Kombat
Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy
there’s an online recreation of nsmbds’s mario vs. luigi mode that allows more than 2 ppl to play and several customization options. brought me back to when my sister and i would play soooo much together
cool video!
its a good day when randy posts
Also it’s crazy how fast this woman is growing. 1 month ago she made a 10k subscriber video. Now she’s at 50k
The thumbnail being the DS I had with the exact favorite game I played as a kid ahh
I never had any Nintendo products (my dad worked in IT we got computer stuff for free and he could pirate so I never really minded) but your videos remind me of sitting in like the kids area while my mum does something and watch an older kid play their gameboy and just explain to me what they were doing and why
never played ds games on the download play mode, but seeing the ds download station made me nostalgic, even though ive never went to one in my whole life lol
hello and welcome to the new mic ^^
Never forgetting the days where i played cod4 modern warfare with my neighborhood friends through our worn out ds' via downloadplay. Absolute banger
