(Airport tour/visit #58. To see all my airport tours, visit • Airport Tours and Visits )
Here is a 4K/Ultra High Definition tour of Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the busiest airport in the world (with over 100 million passengers in 2015). The tour begins with the international terminal (F gates), and then takes you through concourses E, A, B, C, and D before finishing with the domestic terminal (T gates). After that, there are some views of the airport from outside the terminal. Hope you enjoy! (Footage from 11/10/2016 and 11/14/2016. Filmed with a Panasonic HC-VX870K.)

I'm an Atlanta native. The afternoon before the new airport opened in 1980 I went there and started wandering around. The TSA did not exist. The new terminal was open because countless workers, employees, and delivery people were coming in and out, but no planes were arriving yet. I walked up and down every corridor, rode the people movers, and just moseyed everywhere I could all night long. Around midnight it was almost deserted, and there were times when I couldn't see another person on a concourse with me. I walked around all night until the first planes began arriving the next morning (Delta snuck the first one in ahead of everything scheduled), and departing passengers began coming in. When I left around noon the place was packed. I did this because in 1961 as a 7 year old boy, my parents had taken me to the "grand opening" event of the terminal this one replaced.

@@RojoFern I've been there just to walk around and ride tram. This was around 2000. I was in huge sections with no other people also. For so long that I rode the little red trolley that may be for moving bags? Was like a little motorcycle. Was no one there.

You are absolutely correct. I was hired by a major commercial airline, DELTA, in the mid 70's and worked in the "old " airport off Virginia Ave.and watched the new airport being built. I too went to the "new" airport several times a week to see the progress. I actually watched. as huge cranes dropped the trains into the transportation mall. The "new" airport opened in September 1980 and is now over 40 years old. Originally there were 5 councourses. T concourse was the original international terminal. Concourse A, B, C and D were the original domestic concourses. Eastern airlines was the predominant carrier in ATL until Frank Lorenzo put them out of business. Delta did in fact have the first arrival at the "new" airport which was somewhat by design to beat Eastern from having the first arrival. Delta executives advised the pilots flying the first arriving aircraft to declare an emergency thus giving Delta expedited arrival ahead of Eastern by a mere few minutes. I watched Concourse E being built and it replaced Concourse T for international operations. I also
watched Concourse F being built which replaced Conourse E for international flight operations where it is currently being used exclusively for international operations. ATL currently has 7 passenger terminals or councourses all of which are connected by underground trains.
ATL has 4 parallel runways, two on the south side of the airport and two on the north side. They are adjacent to the councourses. ATL NOW has 5 runways. I watched the fifth runway being built. It is one the other side of the airport adjacent to Sullivan Rd. which actually had to be moved and reconstructed to accomadate the runway. It was built mainly for use by Regional Jets such as are operated by small carriers such as ASA reducing traffic on the other 4 runways which are used by larger wide body aircraft. The ATL Airport is the largest airport in the world and Delta is now the predominant carrier and surpasses the second busiest airport in the US LAX, which is dwarfed by ATL by boarding over 11 million passengers more than LAX annually although many airlines use LAX compared to ATL which mainly is because of the largest single carrier operation by Delta in one city in the world. ATL airport is actually a city in itself unrivaled by any other airport.

If you're currently having trouble playing the video on a cell phone: this may be because UA-cam hasn't yet rendered an HD or 480p version of the video. It's only rendered 4K and 1440p versions, which your phone may not be able to play. So hopefully a playable version will be processed by UA-cam in a couple hours :)

    • @KBurchfiel

OK, the 1080p version is now available, so it's working on my cell phone. If it's still not working on yours, wait to see if the 480p/720p version helps. Thanks for your patience, and in the meantime it should be available on the computer.

I will gladly come back to watch this video, I love traveling and flying so I am certainly an enthusiast for these kind of videos lol, I love exploring different airports and seeing what sort of planes I can travel on. Still yet to get on a bigger one like a 767 777 or A330, yk anything around there but looking forward to it when I do more travel when I’m outta college and hopefully something like that when I get to go abroad next spring. Gonna have to wait and see, also the shot at 14:34 is surreal by how many people are in that one terminal

LAX isn't too bad in my opinion, unless you have to exit security to make a connection (which is only necessary sometimes). ATL does have very easy connections given that all the terminals are connected within security. Have fun on your trip!
