My Dad was a sheet mtal mechanic after WWII working on airplane wings. It's a pleasure watching you work as it gives me some insights to Dad's skills. ❤
Hey Karl, That piece you made to hold the instrument cluster matches so well. It looks like something made in the art deco period. You are on the right path with the whole dash. Watching you do things in your shop gives me confidence that I can do it in my shop. Thanks for your channel. Take Care
Honestly this is the best UA-cam video i have ever seen. Between the relaxed approach, overall message, fantastic music and pure magic flowing from your hands into the metal its an amazing piece of film. Captivating, inspiring, relaxing and exciting all in one. Im blown away. Retired carpenter learning metal working and this is food for my soul right now. Keep em coming kid.
@@MakeItKustom keep em coming! I love the tool building and the projects. Too many channels glaze over all the little details and you really show every step. Years ago people would hide their talents to protect their trade and their jobs from being taken you know!
Karl you just amaze me on how your brain works, You had the idea the form you wanted. But getting there you struggle just a little like most of do but our struggles normally ends in frustration and our projects sit for ever. Now yours in the wonderful world of video became a product and the way you go about your process teaches us a different way of creation Now all this babal means is I love how you show to keep marching on to get what you wanted from the beginning I wish I had the room or a shop to create all the cool tools you have shown how easy it is to build great job as always and love your designs All this could have been said in one sentence Sorry
Karl you’re so gifted. It’s a pleasure to watch you work this metal into what you want. You are fabricator extreme. Thanks for sharing your talent! Happy Holidays to you Karl ❤️🎄
Since you are a non-wood-worker per se, seeing you cutting the radius on the UHMW board I came to think of the tale of the bumblebee that didn't know it couldn't fly :D I'm really enjoying these vids!
I liked coming along during the evolution of your vision from Ford dash to hand-formed. You could have edited that out, but seeing how the inspiration dawned, I think, is useful.
I’m glad you built a custom dash instead of modding the Ford Dash. The Ford Dash just looked too busy and those center creases didn’t fit. Right from the start of the video I couldn’t see it working well. You’re on it buddy!
you might want to look at some wood working books at the router profiles for cabinet doors and counter top edges. i used to do solid surface counter tops lots of profiles out there
That dash is awesome. Amazing metal work but the most impressive part is how you go from a vision to how to make it happen. Love the art deco Zepher look.
Right? I was watching and went- HOLD ON, YOU CAN'T USE A CIRCULAR SAW LIKE THAT! I was cringing as I was sure it was going to bind, kick back and bite you. And then you just finished the cut. Experience matters... Well done Karl.
That dash will look unique and amazing! Those interrupted lines from different panels could look great if done right. Can't wait to see your video of a trip to japan!
Karl, one of the things you might try on a future project like this is using styrofoam. Regular home improvement store insulating styrofoam, the pink stuff, can be hot glued together and cut, sanded, and molded to form something like a dash. When you get it where you like it, you can see what the finished product will look like and function and, as a bonus, you have a ready made buck.
I think the plastic he is using is HDPE or similar. Have you tried the extruded polystyrene board that you mentioned? My thought is that it can't be used as a buck because it is much too brittle and compressible. Fine for making a test/mock-up though.
The problem is that shit takes time. Once you get to the level this guy is at, you see a shape in your head and everything you do makes that shape a little more clear. I would do the Styrofoam thing, but Karl is past that, I think.
I am thinking clay for my next mold. The cheap stuff you mix yourself. Maybe even sand or paper mache, because I can't do metalwork well enough to do a nice job so there is no point spending more money for the same outcome. If it saves me time even better, if it takes longer... at least I saved money and get some practise kicking myself.
Karl you are so great at what you do...your eye for detail is outstanding....I love watching you work.... Thank you...and I wish you ,your wife and all your friends safe and joyful Christmas, and a prosperous new year... Be safe see you next year!!!
Hey there just wanted you to know that you definitely know what you doing when it comes to making the pieces for your ride I really wish that I knew half the knowledge that you have making the have making the parts that you h😢ave already made It takes years experience to get the knowledge to do what you are doing I really hope that you get this ride built with no problems keep up with the great work you are doing and always remember always be safe at what you are doing in your life okay God bless you always and forever Charles Williams later on okay thanks be blessed always and forever
All of my experiments end up in the scrap bin. This first attempt turned out nice! I bought a contour tool from PA too, i agree it works well. That reminds me of an art-deco clock. I like the proportions. You sure have an eye for this stuff!
dash looks great, what if you left the center piece proud and added a piece on either side that sweeps out and back to the dash? sort of like making a cockpit seat area on both sides of center part of dash.
Brother you just saved me thousands. Now I'm no longer sweating/dreaming of buying a Zephyr dash. I'll take a crack at making my own version for my 35 5W. God bless
Karl . Looking great , lover the way the dash is coming out , if you want a great product to put on bare steel I use GIBBS , you can spray it on bare steel and it will keep it from flash rusting for about a year and it it paint friendly.
As I was watching you work on the '31 the other evening I was reminded of the roadsters of the '50's. The really neat ones had rear wheels that the centers had been reversed. They really made them look neat. Oh, about the switches on the dash panel - how about something like the switch on the Gibson "Les Paul" guitar. The one with the "Poker Chip" behind it.
Absolutely amazing! Watching how fast you can build these shapes is so satisfying! Even more after experiencing many times how hard it is to get the sheets moving like you want them to.
that looks great, only thing I would add would be some fluting on the face below the guage, in and art deco style (thinking of the middle of the dash on my 48 Dodge pickup). you do amazing things tastefully with simple tools, a true craftsman.
I needed this video! I've been working on a dash and I've been racking my brain trying to come up with something I actually like. Love all your videos man appreciate it!
Dash is going to be a centerpiece, Karl me thinks it looks a bit like an old MC tank part but a very good look. I realy enjoyed this project, thank you.
Watching this video for the second time. This time watching at .25 speed. Have ever watched one of your videos at .25 speed? You sound like you had a lot of wobbly pops. Any way watching for inspiration on making a gauge pod for a 48 merc. The merc had the ugliest dash in my opinion. Have welded up all of the original holes in the dash except the glove box and have 2 5” gauges I want to space equally on each side of the steering column. Really enjoy you informative videos.
My Dad was a sheet mtal mechanic after WWII working on airplane wings. It's a pleasure watching you work as it gives me some insights to Dad's skills. ❤
I was the foreman of a metal fab shop and this is some of the best work that I've ever seen....
It's another level... é outro patamar 😯😯😯👏👏👏👍👍👍
Thanks Peter!

You are on the right path with the whole dash.

Thanks for your channel.

It screams Art Deco, & I love it.
Music is so underrated in these videos. The content is great and the music is just right.
Always an education. I like referencing old lessons as well. Wish I owned more tools, but when do you have enough? Merry Christmas 😊
One of my favorite videos in this series so far.
The '31 roadster is a work of art on every level. I've been around for a lots of years and have never seen anything like it.
Thanks man! Love being creative with it!

Wow!! Thanks so much for the high praise! I’m just glad you enjoyed it. I’m so lucky to do this AND have it be enjoyed by others

Great to see Bugatti being channeled. Beautiful design work.

Heck yeah! Super glad to see this thing back on the channel. I cannot wait to see where the roadster ends up.
Awesome as usual Karl. Magnificents in Metal. Billy J..... Queensland, Australia.
Looks great. The Bakelite knob / button idea is a great one.
I really like the waterfall thing you're going for.
Can't wait for the rest of the dash to take shape, it's going to look sharp.
Karl you’re so gifted. It’s a pleasure to watch you work this metal into what you want. You are fabricator extreme. Thanks for sharing your talent! Happy Holidays to you Karl ❤️🎄
I think it looks great comming along sweetly
Design, skill and all round nice guy make you my favorite Fabrication videos

This dashboard should be really crazy... Men, you are the best...😊
Bruno from France...
I like your vision of the dash cannot wait to see the final look.
I love the design, and I like the way you worked out the metal to get the right angles.
Its going to look great, you made the right call because it takes so much time to make an existing part match what you are thinking .
I liked coming along during the evolution of your vision from Ford dash to hand-formed. You could have edited that out, but seeing how the inspiration dawned, I think, is useful.
Glad it’s worth keeping in! The whole process is always more than most see

I'm digging the aesthetic You're working towards. Kool stuff as usual!
That dash is awesome. Amazing metal work but the most impressive part is how you go from a vision to how to make it happen. Love the art deco Zepher look.
Man, those were some mad skills cutting that circle of your hammerform with the circular saw! It's looking good. You are an inspiration.
Right? I was watching and went- HOLD ON, YOU CAN'T USE A CIRCULAR SAW LIKE THAT! I was cringing as I was sure it was going to bind, kick back and bite you. And then you just finished the cut. Experience matters... Well done Karl.
Hahaha I wondered if anyone would see that. The piece was so small and flexible
That is the coolist metal work I have ever seen!!
What a wonderful design! It's just like a Flying Angel. 😎👏👍
Learned a new way to shape sheet metal thanks and their was so many white plastic shavings on your hat it looked like snow 🌨 lol 😂
Love the step-by-step videos! Because this stuff can be very challenging to do!
I love the dash, the whole car is coming out beautiful. Happy Christmas.
That dash will look unique and amazing! Those interrupted lines from different panels could look great if done right.
Can't wait to see your video of a trip to japan!
Try tilting the bottom panel, like the dashes in modern cars. The side panel's diagonal support line could form nice line for the dash
That dash looks incredible! Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us yet again!
Great work again Karl, happy holidays to you and your family.!!
Oooh, Japan. I look forward to you sharing that with us.
They are always doing some crazy stuff.

@@5Perf65mmit's uhmw and that still ain't cheap!! That's a pricey mold lol at least for what looyk to be at least 3/4" thick.

Styrofoam as a hammer buck ain’t gonna work on one hand. On the other it’s gonna give you a warped piece full of edge dents.
Really diggin the symmetry you are incorporating into every aspect of this car Karl😎
Thanks frank! Hope your doing well man 👊
Man, you are a magician!
Your videos just keep getting better and better!
Great work Karl as always
some of the best content on youtube. true craftsman
Thanks mate, great to see you back at it
Amazing how you see it in your minds eye, explain it the best you can and it comes out beautiful.
Love the look!
Great to see the homemade tools used.
You are an awsome fabricator and very good at educating at the same time - Keep it up 👍
You should be getting more likes and comments for all the amazing things you are creating.
I love the “garbage hammer” 😂 one of the best builds it looked so much fun.
Karl, that is going to be a killer dash. Always been a fan of waterfall dashboards. Enjoy your holidays.
Awesome. I was thinking art deco, a minute later you said art deco. A lot of processes packed in this video. Thanks.
Karl fantastic design like it can’t wait to see the finish 👍👍👍👍👍
Killer work as always, glad to see you back on the roadster
That dash and waterfall will look quite amazing when you get it done. I really like the art deco appearance. Good for a period piece.
Thanks 🙏
Karl you are so great at what you do...your eye for detail is outstanding....I love watching you work....
Thank you...and I wish you ,your wife and all your friends safe and joyful Christmas, and a prosperous new year...

Lookin' good Karl. Thanks again for sharing your skills with us.👍👍❤
It reminds me so much of my Harley Heritage gas tank Carl - good job
That is so sweet. Im glad you let your artistic juices flow. And Im glad that you didnt use the 35 dash, They are hard to come by anymore
I like the music choice 12:50 on this one 😊👌
That's going to be absolutely beautiful!!
That is going to look class Karl. You have a great eye for the real detail can't wait to see it finished.
Karl you are amazing! Keep up the great work!

Very classy looking dash
I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one to forget the ground clamp...
Love that gauge piece and the whole dash. Looks so awesome!
You are incredibly talented man, I enjoy watching your videos
Very cool! Love the way its coming together. Mike c
Outstanding......Thank you for sharing your expertise.
I like it. I love watching the pivot in thought process.
Center console with cup holder and coins compartment in the vicinity of the gear shifter would be awesome.

Yes!!!! So stoked to hear it!
Karl, I don’t know how you do what you do, your truly and artist. Thanks for sharing, I ALWAYS learn from you.
This is art! Metalevolution!
Very much "Art Deco" looks great.
