Good point. If that's the case it would also tie into why he wanted Luke to strike him down, though I think that's supposed to be more him turning Luke evil because it's a generally evil thing to do, and he was never in any real danger of Luke given all the dark side stuff he can do. I feel like Palpatine did work a lot better as a generally nefarious fantasy evil wizard who generally just likes doing bad stuff and controlling people. Now that hes set up as some grand planner and organizer of 50 or so years worth of events, it does feel like he should have had a clear end goal in mind
Yea I think that's a good point. What kind of ends up happening here is making us wonder about some bigger scheme that was never really intended. From the previous movies it seemed like he just wanted power, but now we're forced to find reasons for why he wanted it. I do like the idea that even Luke could have factored into the "strike me down" concept though. Either way I just wish that something clearer had been presented.
