"Wide open spaces", "Cowboy take me away", "Landslide", so many great great songs! All 3 very talented and play multiple instruments. Blue grass meets Country Rock.
I can't listen to Travelin Soldier without crying even after all these years. I can't help thinking "what if that was my daughter" and it breaks my heart every time.
This became the anthem for abused women. Kind of put abusive men on notice, but the song really brought the problem of spousal abuse out into the light of day, albeit in a funny way.
This video was huge back in the day. The song was funny and the actors were all well known back then. Dennis Franz always played a cop, Lauren Holly was well known for Dumb and Dumber and Picket Fences and Jane Krakowski played a popular loopy character on Ally McBeal.
The Dixie Chicks were a small time trio of gals who did traditional country music for a while but never really found "their sound". Their lead singer quit and they linked up with a new singer - who was more of a rocker type. And their combined energy just worked. They were at the top of the charts and had hit after hit... crossing over from country to popular music. Then they spoke out against the US involvement in the Middle East and President Bush -- and the country music audience went CRAZY. The Dixie Chicks got pulled off the playlists of the country radio stations... former fans protested them & burned their CDs, threw out their records, etc. But the Dixie Chicks never backed down... they believed it was an unjust military action (and as Americans, they hav the right to say that) ... but they continued to play - even showed great support for the military soldiers (their version of "Traveling Solider" is considered one of the best) ... it's still rare to hear their music played on the radio. Natalie, the lead singer has released a non-country album and continues to record and perform with the Chicks (as they've redubbed themselves to separate their image from any negative connotations which might be linked to the "Dixie" term - which, for some, harkens back to the old Confederate South) They're a talented group and have some beautiful songs - they're catalog of work is definitely worth exploring.
They didn't get dropped because they spoke out against the war. Many country artists have been outspoken against war throughout the decades. They got dropped because they trash the sitting US president during a concert in England... Which is considered treason by most Americans at the time. They have the right to do that, but the backlash was fast and hard.
The Chicks lost the Dixie part of their name after the backlash of protest of G.H.W. Bush and the war. Then if course all the info about how the war was a started by bad Intel but The Chicks didn't want to go back to the Dixie Chicks name.
Murder ballads are a tradition in country music with roots going back to the British Isles. I’ve seen several comments suggesting “Wait in the Truck” by Hardy, ft Lainey Wilson. Some other famous ones: The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia - Vicki Lawrence, later covered by Reba, which you reacted to. Two Black Cadillacs - Carrie Underwood (with approval from Stephen King to base the music video on Christine). Her song Church Bells is also a murder ballad. So is Choctaw County Affair… Gunpowder & Lead - Miranda Lambert. She has another - Kerosene Red Headed Stranger - Willie Nelson Independence Day - Martina McBride Long Black Veil - Left Frizzell, later covered by Johnny Cash Martha Devine - Ashley McBryde Garth Brooks - The Thunder Rolls The SteelDrivers - If It Hadn’t Been for Love (features Chris Stapleton lead singer before solo fame) My Big Iron Skillet - Wanda Jackson (old classic country) River - Jason Isbell And related, though she moved away from country… Taylor Swift, ft HAIM - no body, no crime There are many more, but that’s a start.
*History Lesson* They got "cancelled". Per Google: The Dixie Chicks, now known as The Chicks, were canceled after lead singer Natalie Maines criticized President George W. Bush and the Iraq War in 2003: Backlash: The band faced a backlash from country radio and audiences. Some say this was because country audiences tend to be more Republican than fans of other genres. Others say the band was singled out for being anti-war in a genre that is usually pro-war and patriotic. Response: The band responded to the backlash with their song “Not Ready to Make Nice”. They also won three top Grammy awards in 2007. No regrets: In 2023, the band said they have no regrets about being canceled.
It wasn't just that she complained about the war, it was the words she used and that she was complaining about America while in a foreign country. They have some good songs no doubt, but I'm not a fan of the lead singers politics. More importantly I'm disappointed they gave in to cancel culture and changed their name.
@1145ontop what words did she use? Natalie said: Just so you know, we're on the good side with y'all. We do not want this war, this violence, and we're ashamed that the President of the United States is from Texas. The war she was talking about was based on lies and anyone with a brain knew there were no WMD - Colin Powell admitted it was based on lies. 45 said far worse things about America whilst being President.
I can't believe how controversial this song was. I was never a big Dixie Chicks fan but their cover of Landslide is great. The two sisters that back the lead singer started a band called Courtyard Hounds that I liked a lot. Their song Ain't No Son of Mine is awesome.
I mean, given the recent “your body my choice” bs going around right now, I’m not surprised at all this music video was controversial back then. People just don’t take domestic abuse seriously. Tho definitely sounds like this song needs a comeback imho.
They have a lot of great songs another good one is Traveling Soldier. Also I would love to see your reaction to Hardy, Wait in the Truck featuring Lainey Wilson
BP Reba's " Does He Love You" ft. Linda Davis is another great one. Linda was Reba's backup singer for years and hard to tell their voices apart. The end is a real blast.
Think it, Traveling Soldier I mean, might have been a cover, originally written and played by someone else first if it’s the song I’m thinking about. The one where the lonely soldier bonds with the high school working at the diner and he writes letters to her while at war. For a complete turnaround of emotion, you should react to their rendition of Not Ready To Make Nice, live at VH1. The song, its meaning, their vocals, the orchestra.....chills guaranteed.
This was a huge hit and super popular video. Lots of well-known actors from the late 90s in this.- Other Dixie Chick songs include "Wide Open Spaces", "Travelin' Soldier", "Sin Wagon", "Not Ready to Make Nice", a great cover of "Landslide", and of course their duet with Beyonce, "Daddy Lessons".
Dennis Franz (Earl) spent 20 years as Chicago PD, he played cops and bad guys. Lauren holly has done comedy and drama, including 3 years in NCIS and was married to Jim Carey. they started out as Dixie Chicks then went against Bush and the Gulf War, and dropped Dixie saying it was racist, then faded out (I Think).
BP, I hope you will do the live version of "TRAVELING SOLDIER" by the Dixie Chick's or The Woke Chicks or whatever the heck they're calling themselves these days.. 🤔 The girls are all very talented musicians and sing beautiful harmonies, and that song is gorgeous and makes me tear up every time. They play their instruments in the video and sing it beautifully. 💃🎵🪕🎻
The equal stars of this video are the actors. Dennis Franz usually plays brusque, cranky, rough tv cop roles, as in Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. But most acquaintances will tell you what a nice guy he really is. Lauren Holly has been in many movies, and 3 years on NCIS, and other TV appearances. Jane Krakowski is a tv, movie, and stage actress who also sings. Seeing Dennis Franz camp it up as zombie Earl at the end is hilarious!
Their video for Wide Open Spaces was filmed in Winter Park, CO at the 1998 West Fest. They were still known as The Dixie Chicks. I was there with friends and we have been able to find ourselves in the crowd scenes. Another bit of trivia for that one, the tour bus they used was owned by the then owner of Crystola Inn, just up the hill from Colorado Springs.
This was more of a funny joke novelty song...check out their ***WIDE OPEN SPACES***, ***COWBOY TAKE ME AWAY*** and ***TONIGHT THE HEARTACHE'S ON ME*** and ***SIN WAGON*** You might remember them from some drama
The song and the notion behind it is so great, you might have missed how INSANE the lead singer is of “The Chicks” (formerly known as the Dixie Chicks). Also…look up the story behind another HUGE hit of theirs “Not Ready to Make Nice,” and think about giving it a reaction please. Theres a lot going on in that one…and how the rock side of the industry stood up for them at that moment in time. Great story.
I love The Chicks. My husband and I saw The Dixie Chicks perform when they were just starting out and thought they were fabulous. I was so pleased when they became the headliners. They are so very talented and I enjoy all their music. You should listen to their cover of Traveling Soldier.
This song always reminds me of the movie Practical Magic (based on a book, with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock), not cause it's on the soundtrack or anything, but it's a story of sisters, one who is abused by her man and he ends up dead (twice, or three times depending on how you look at it) lol.
Hilarious song (obviously not the abuse) but on how she deals with it, everytime I hear it I think of the movie “Practical Magic” that came out in 1998…
I love The Chicks, and their former iteration The Dixie Chicks. Their music is everything from country-pop to the more formal country. They are incredibly talented musos, each being multi instrumental. Their version of the Stevie Nicks song "Landslide is just beautiful, as is "Travelling Soldier " (bring lots of tissues, and be prepared to ugly cry...). White Trash Wedding is also a fun number... Wide Open Spaces is another fave. The girls have a great back catalogue, well worth getting lost in. 😊 🙃🐨🇦🇺
The Dixie Chicks (they will always be The Dixie Chicks to me)lead vocalist Natalie Maines has an amazing voice. To really hear her voice, check out Without You. It is much more of an emotional song and her voice really comes through in it.
Dennis franz played. a hardcore homicide detective, in nypd blue, and I think in hill street blues also... had to love him coming back as zombie earl in the dance scene
The other Actors: Wanda was from Ally McBeal Mary Ann was from Down Periscope and NCIS Michael Deluise is the son of Dom Deliuse and one of the Producers of Stargate SG-1 and this video is a good reunion between him and Dennis Franz since Michael played his Son on NYPD Blue
The girls didn't just throw him down the hill. The lyrics say they went out to the lake. The camera is usually looking up at them throughout, so you don't see the lake below. If they live far enough south, there will be gators. If law enforcement doesn't start looking quickly, there is no finding Earl. That is solid covering your tracks.
The dropped Dixie from the name a few years back because of the negative connotations and just became The Chicks. so many song choices... Cowboy Take me Away You Were Mine Travelin Soilder Not Ready to Make Nice Wide Open Spaces
The group used to be called the Dixie Chicks until about 4 years ago or more when any sort of reference to the south would get you cancelled so they dropped the Dixie part and just became known as The Chicks. They got themselves somewhat cancelled when they mouthed off against Bush and the war in Afghanistan. Listen to their song Not Ready to Make Nice, even if you don't react to it.
Years ago I started dating a new guy. When he met my bff, we played this song while driving through a VERY remote area. He was scared shitless.😅 We are celebrating our 17th anniversary this month ❤ and my bff is bringing her family over for Thanksgiving. 😊
Now you should React to some of their Live performances. Travelling Soldier and Landslide with Stevie Nicks are a good start. The Chicks dropped the "Dixie" years ago and I love them even more for it. Incredibly talented musicians who I hope to see Live in person some day.
Natalie Maines, the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks is the most underrated vocalist and country music. The three of them are incredibly talented, musicians, writers, singers, etc, my favorite song of theirs would have to be. I’m not ready to make nice but throw a dart at their catalog and pick a song they are amazing.
❤The Chicks.... formerly known as The Dixie Chicks. Talented musicians and Natalie's amazing voice. Wide Open Spaces, Cowboy Take Me Away and their cover of Landslide are some of their best.
I literally got chills when I started watching this video. 🤦♂️ 😂 I was a big Dixie Chicks (I refuse to call them “the chicks”) fan from 1999 to 2003 when they had their presidential controversy. Lol I had a huge celeb crush on Natalie Maines (lead singer) until she started fussing at other singers more so than actually singing.. lol.. Anyway, great reaction. And yeah, the video was inspired by that movie you mentioned, which escapes me at the moment. Lol
I saw the Dixie Chicks play for a technical conference I attended in Dallas 1995 in the Fairmont hotel ballroom. The sisters Emily and Martie played a mean Orange Blossom Special on a fiddle and a banjo, It was before Natalie Mains joined them as the singer. It's fun seeing a band before fame. They went off the rails with politics, and then went Woke and dropped the "Dixie". The sisters had a side group that was pretty good.
Love that they've got Michael DeLuise in this. He's always been good at playing these characters that look "slow". Who remembers him as one of the Petty Officers on "Seaquest DSV"?
They had to make it sound happy to make the message sink in more. And to bypass some censors. I also love how Dennis Franz, who played cops, turned down the role as one of the cops and wanted to play Earl.
They were called The Dixie Chicks then but now just go by The Chicks. There’s a lot of uhhhhh racist Civil War history associated with Dixie so they dropped it about 4 years ago. My brain still fills in the original band name just out of 20ish years of familiarity so. ^^; But yes, I adore this song and the music video. And yes there are absolutely friends I would enact this video for. 😁
Well the group did record their best known and best loved songs as "The Dixie Chicks" so it makes sense to say all these songs are by "The Dixie Chicks".
@@ChrisW-17 I agree. We need some sort of grammatical convention for speaking about actions done under a previous name - something like "The Dixie Chicks, now known as The Chicks" or "The Chicks, then known as The Dixie Chicks". Because it is not 100% true to say that The Chicks recorded "Goodbye Earl", but conversely it seems respectful to acknowledge that they are no longer known by the previous name.
I suspect Taylor Swift's "No Body, No Crime" is a continuation of this tradition. ETA: Somewhere on the wwws there is a list of (country-ish) songs about women doing away with their SOs. Kind of relevant where no-fault divorce isn't a thing. And don't worry, there are also men singing songs about the same. Not country, but Nick Cave & Kylie Minogue's "Where The Wild Roses Grow" springs to mind immediately.
Never heard this but it’s great, and to me very relatable to me. I was in a relationship like that but I didn’t poison him (unfortunately 😊) but I used to wash my dog’s arse with his toothbrush and put it back!!! It’s the little things isn’t it that makes us feel good sometimes? He’s still alive before anybody accuses me of being a psychopath 😅
You got it wrong their fans weren’t offended by the word dixie, the dixie chicks became offended by the word dixie and actually more or less got cancelled when they dropped dixie from their name
8:54 catch that pause and see the hand in the bottom right corner to catch the body before it hits the camera! Love seeing that when I watch the video lmao.
As someone who had to leave the state I grew up in to get away from an Earl years ago, (and I don't want to hear a word of criticism, the sorry pieces of crap don't come with a warning tag that says "HI, I'm a wife beater" hanging on their shirt collars)... But, I could care less what they do to the Earls of the world. The behavior only keeps escalating, even when they switch victims, and zebras don't change their stripes. Abusers of any kind don't change, they get worse over time, and they're always on their best behavior when they're reeling in their prey. In most cases, you never see it coming, and just like the song says, a piece of paper from the courts won't stop them, if you change the locks, they just bust in the window, they'll show up at your job, etc. I'm back home of course, and older and wiser after taking some voluntary counseling to figure all of this out, years ago. Nowadays, if an Earl was stupid enough to come anywhere near me, he'd be doing the Riverdance all the way down my porch trying to dodge the "projectiles" coming from one of my 2nd Amendment accoutrements. That's a fact. But this is a funny song.. 💃🎵🪕🎻😂
If you want to see them at their very BEST - check out Traveling Soldier. The vocals, performance, and instrumentation are PERFECTION. Beautiful song! :)
Best line in the song: "turns out Earl was a missing person that no one missed at all"....😊
Absolutely! And the black eyed peas lol

"Wide open spaces", "Cowboy take me away", "Landslide", so many great great songs! All 3 very talented and play multiple instruments. Blue grass meets Country Rock.
Seeing Dennis Franz with that hair and mustache still cracks me up everytime!
He’s hilarious!😂
😂😂😂
So funny, I miss him...what a great actor he was.
They originally wanted Dennis Franz to play one of the cops, as he had on TV, but he insisted that he wanted to play Earl, so they gave him the part.
"Not ready to make nice", "Travelin Soldier", and "Top of the world" are the BEST
I can't listen to Travelin Soldier without crying even after all these years. I can't help thinking "what if that was my daughter" and it breaks my heart every time.
@@Grace1957- I agree wholeheartedly
Spot on!!
Travelin Soldier was written by Bruce Robison. His brother Charlie (RIP) married one of the Chicks for a while.
Sin Wagon!
This became the anthem for abused women.
Kind of put abusive men on notice, but the song really brought the problem of spousal abuse out into the light of day, albeit in a funny way.
Yea
I remember the song caught a lot of back lash cuz higher ups said this song was saying it's okay to kill your abusive spouse 🙄

This video is brilliant because it handles very dark material in a lighthearted way to make it palatable to the masses.
"Not Ready to Make Nice" is a good one. I remember loving their remake of "Landslide" too. I love The Chicks!

Lovvvvvve landslide
Great song and reaction. There used to be bumper stickers that said Earls in the trunk 😅
I had that on my car in high school
This song is old school. Dixie chicks are wannabes

🙃🐨🇦🇺
The Dixie Chicks (they will always be The Dixie Chicks to me)lead vocalist Natalie Maines has an amazing voice. To really hear her voice, check out Without You. It is much more of an emotional song and her voice really comes through in it.
Dennis franz played. a hardcore homicide detective, in nypd blue, and I think in hill street blues also... had to love him coming back as zombie earl in the dance scene
The other Actors: Wanda was from Ally McBeal
Mary Ann was from Down Periscope and NCIS
Michael Deluise is the son of Dom Deliuse and one of the Producers of Stargate SG-1 and this video is a good reunion between him and Dennis Franz since Michael played his Son on NYPD Blue
I wore this cassette tape OUT when I was in college!! Absolutely hilarious. Love The Chicks!
Cowboy Take me Away
You Were Mine
Travelin Soilder
Not Ready to Make Nice
Wide Open Spaces
Denise Franz from NYPD Blues and so much more was perfect.. he was hilarious
Now you should React to some of their Live performances. Travelling Soldier and Landslide with Stevie Nicks are a good start. The Chicks dropped the "Dixie" years ago and I love them even more for it. Incredibly talented musicians who I hope to see Live in person some day.
I always thought of the song, My Good Gal, by Old Crow Medicine Show, when I heard this song. They're great.
For all the controversy about the (Dixie) Chicks, the actually have talent and a good song list.
LOL LOL LOL
I've got a shirt that has chick peas on it that has earl had to die. Southern women were raised this way.
OMG that's awesome
❤The Chicks.... formerly known as The Dixie Chicks. Talented musicians and Natalie's amazing voice. Wide Open Spaces, Cowboy Take Me Away and their cover of Landslide are some of their best.
This song is comical lol, Yes it's the Dixie chicks Lol❤😂😂😂😂
I literally got chills when I started watching this video. 🤦♂️ 😂 I was a big Dixie Chicks (I refuse to call them “the chicks”) fan from 1999 to 2003 when they had their presidential controversy. Lol I had a huge celeb crush on Natalie Maines (lead singer) until she started fussing at other singers more so than actually singing.. lol.. Anyway, great reaction. And yeah, the video was inspired by that movie you mentioned, which escapes me at the moment. Lol
It makes sense that you don't vibe with the new name. Your main exposure to them was when they were operating under the previous name.
Great catalog. Cowboy Take Me Away and Travelin Soldier are particularly outstanding.
Their version of Fleetwood Mac's Landslide is really good too.
They had to make it sound happy to make the message sink in more. And to bypass some censors. I also love how Dennis Franz, who played cops, turned down the role as one of the cops and wanted to play Earl.
They were called The Dixie Chicks then but now just go by The Chicks. There’s a lot of uhhhhh racist Civil War history associated with Dixie so they dropped it about 4 years ago. My brain still fills in the original band name just out of 20ish years of familiarity so. ^^;
But yes, I adore this song and the music video. And yes there are absolutely friends I would enact this video for. 😁
I love you clarifying the Dixie chick name drop as I do the same 😊
Well the group did record their best known and best loved songs as "The Dixie Chicks" so it makes sense to say all these songs are by "The Dixie Chicks".
Well Dixie does refer to the Mason Dixon line south of which slavery was legal.
haha, love it, next you should do Guns and Roses, I Used To Love Her... hahaha thanks for the great video
I love watching reactions to this song. When it sinks in... 😂😂😂
Haha I love it! 🎉🎉🎉He deserved it,!
I LOVE the Chicks. Their last album was Natalie's divorce celebration. It's awesome!
I hadn’t thought about “Where the Wild Roses Grow” in a while. Good one.
I used to have an “Earl’s in the trunk” bumper sticker. I miss The Chicks
I just popped in to see your reaction to this one. ❤❤❤ 😂
My Lil Sis got ICU'd by a POS in Boston.. I'm patiently waiting for him to get outta the pen!
Might want to delete so they don't get you for pre-meditation
They used to be known as The Dixie Chicks but then changed it to The Chicks when people started being "offended" by the word Dixie.
So stupid...or should I ignorant? Which is less offensive? 🙄🙄
You got it wrong their fans weren’t offended by the word dixie, the dixie chicks became offended by the word dixie and actually more or less got cancelled when they dropped dixie from their name
Not calling them the Dixie chicks offends me bring back Dixie Can’t believe those idiots made them change the name. Grow up America
@@jonniewilson6825 Actually they were cancelled because they spoke out against Bush and the Iraq war, the name change came later
@@jonniewilson6825They cancelled themselves.
😊OMG love!!
😢 OMG love!! I hate to hear this but I hope you found a smile in it! Sending you love ❤❤❤
If you want to see them at their very BEST - check out Traveling Soldier. The vocals, performance, and instrumentation are PERFECTION. Beautiful song! :)
The Chick's version of Travelin Soldier will bring you to tears. I listen to it all the time. Natalie Maines's voice is so appealing.
Second this. As a veteran, I always end up in tears
He should also do Home Free's cover of "Travelin' Soldier".
Natalie Maines does a beautiful version of Lover You Should've Come Over by Jeff Buckley.
They had to drop the Dixie part out of their name for reasons I'm not 100% sure on but you can easily look that up❕️❗️
my favorite line in the song is "Ain't it dark, wrapped up in that tarp?
This song was written by Dennis Lynde, who also wrote Burning Love for Elvis.
