That paint scheme really is iconic, even more so than some of the original chapters. Every time I see you using that yellow it brings me one step closer to painting that inevitable first Imperial Fist marine...
Hey Andy wondering if you had any experience painting the Space Wolves (40k scheme) with contrasts I could never get it looking quite right. I’m not sure if this a problem with the Space wolf grey paint or if I’m just a moron any thoughts?
I honestly haven’t done any with contrast yet. They are in my list and I will get to them. My guy tells me it would be a contrast and layer job to get them smooth lines.
Have you considered doing any of the late unification/early great crusade era paint schemas, so Warhounds Duskraiders The First/Angels of the emperor. The imperial Heralds the War-born Not sure if the Luna wolves changed at all between the original founding and becoming the Son's of Horus or how much the 6th changed once they became the spacewolves, Whatever the Emperor's Children were before they earned the right to be called as such.
the mini looks great! though, i'm not sure i would call this a "contrast painted" space marine, considering the contrast paints are covered up almost entirely :P you could just replace the contrast paints with regular paints and get the exact same result. i feel like if you just sprayed the model yellow (a spraycan of yellow is about half the price of a pot of contrast paint, btw) you'd save yourself both money and a lot of time :P i dunno, i just feel like the contrast paint is completely redundant in these types of videos - the title makes it seem like you're painting a model using contrast paints, but in reality the contrast paint doesn't add anything to the final result. anyways, great video as always, i just don't agree with the title! :D
That’s fair! I use contrast paints as the quickest way to apply base costs but you can spend more time and use regular paints if you prefer! Cheers for the comment, appreciate it!
Unbelievable tekkers Jeff Honestly man nice job on the scheme it turned out really well. I have wondered have your ever tried flouresnt paint? I tried them and I don't think I am sold on them
Hello, The last time that i saw this technics, it was in Philippines when a Guy, for an economise model, had paint half in blue an the ohter side in red for play either Space Marine or Blood Angel.
Do you thin the contrasts? I have some black, red and ultramarine-like blue at home but if I don't thin them down they just behave like base color without any contrast effect.
The blue does for sure. Thats a strong colour. There are two blacks now. The original one can be used without thinning. The new one is very strong. Most of the time I don’t thin. When I do it’s just a drop of water on my brush.
I originally started using iron hands steel when I couldn’t find my pot of leadbelcher, but I find it’s a brighter silver so I’m sticking to it most of the time now 😄
I have an Heresy Emperors Children tutorial that might cover what you’re looking for with the purple? Let me know though if you have any questions after though! ua-cam.com/video/snMzTSzTNTA/v-deo.html
Hey Andy I'd love to see you try and tackle the Sons of Medusa or the Aurora Chapter in a future video. I find the idea of having to paint bright green to be challenging and I'd love to see your take on it.
Paint the yellow, wash which ruined the yellow and then paint the yellow again seems like doubling the work here. Pin washing or panel lining must be a better approach for batch/army painting
exactly! :P if you're going for this kind of colour scheme, just spray the model yellow first, paint the other details (red, black, etc.), then gloss varnish, oil wash; bam, done! :P
I use washes to tie everything together, you can use any method you like if you prefer! This is just one way of showing an easy way of achieving this scheme without having to invest too much specific materials like yellow spray etc if you’re just testing it out!
Another really nice job Andy. Damn it, I've loved this paint scheme since I first saw it about 30 years ago but never had the nerve to try it. Now I almost have to :(
yellow... I feel bad for all the newbies who get suckered into painting Imperial Fists with the Horus Heresy box and separate kits. boy are they in for a treat :p But the split color scheme is really cool. I got an Assault Squad and I plan on painting them in various less famous chapter schemes and at least three of them will be split colors, Yellow Jackets, Mortifactors, and Penitent Blades. It has a different vibe than the solo color with maybe a a different colored pauldron and rim. Overall great guide on how to break the split down and make it easier to replicate for any color scheme :)
Can also use this for Voss Prime skitarri which uses a similar quartered paint scheme. Might be relevant if GW ever turns the focus back to Armageddon again!
The ultimate test for this technique: can it do quartered? The answer seems to be a resounding yes! Howling Griffons are a scheme that always intimidated me. Yellow is very unforgiving in my experience, doubly so with how intense red pigments can be. You've made it work however.
i've built up the leviathan box set and honestly didn't really know what to do with the marines, but remembered the howling griffons having the same colours as my local rugby club so i think i'll be painting them as these lads, your guide should come in handy for that
Yes it’s way easier than it seems, especially with the tools we have these days! Hope you do try it out, and maybe experiment with some other similar schemes too!
Thanks so much man, really want to show the new contrast paints can be used in so many more ways than originally designed, quickest base costs possible 😄
With the washes you should try wiping some off after you've covered an area. Can just use your thumb or a damp clean brush. Wash will stay in the crevices and leave the high areas nice and clean. Basically means you don't have to do the layer stage as the wash hasn't tinted the yellow.
I get you and for some scheme it would work. But I mostly use contacts as your basecoats. It’s not the finish result I’m after. So layering up is unavoidable.
When using contrast medium to mix up your own color or paint from another brand what ratio/mix do you find works best. I was experimenting yesterday and hadn't quite nailed it. Im painting some Emps Children noise marines and I have an army painter light purple that best matches the traitor color. I have 20 so did base and zenithal now looking for a quick solution to get that armor knocked out.
Contrast medium isn’t for making paint into contrast paint. It’s what your meant to use to thin already existing contrast paints as they tend to not like water. Does that make sense?
I love Imperial Fist yellow, it's such a great paint, and this was such a cool video to watch, I only tried painting a line once and I was trying to replicate a helmet. It was a little tricky but surprisingly if you get the crest on the helmet done first its easier to clean up and use it as a guide least it was for me Great video as always Andy :)
Thanks so much! Yes the imperial fists yellow is a godsend 🙌 it does take a bit of practice but if you start with the lighter tone and concentrate more with the darker tone when you’re tidying it up you should be good! Or pick a model that cover the centre a bit with a weapon/shield 😂
@@MediocreHobbies Lol yeah probably didn't help I was trying to copy the 344th of the Imperial Fists from the Horus Heresy the Black and yellow is a nightmare waiting to happen if you make a mistake
The trick I got from zorpazorp is to do the soft bits when you do the wash. The surface tension of the wash will keep the black contrast in the righ areas
As someone with a large primaris howling griffins army really enjoyed this tutorial. Can help take away a lot of fear doing this paint scheme … Subbed my friend !🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗😁

I might go for the howling griffins for the space marine half of the leviathan box.
Ohhh that would be epic!

I have indeed. And they are in the plans. Just not sure when they slot in.
I'm really tempted to try this scheme now....I'm not sure if that a good thing😅😅😅
Haha do it…you can always start over if you mess up!

Yes yes yes.... perfect. Exactly what I needed for my Phobos Strike Team for Kill Team! I asked for a sign, and here it is
Hahaha glad I could help pal
Awesome. I think you should do a full 2000 point army 😉
Hahaha if only I had the time…I would do a lot of other armies first 😂
I notice you're using iron hands steel a lot more for metallics rather than leadbelcher - is that just a preference change over time?
I originally started using iron hands steel when I couldn’t find my pot of leadbelcher, but I find it’s a brighter silver so I’m sticking to it most of the time now 😄

can't imagine painting a whole army or even a squad :(
A killteam maybe an army??? Probably not.
I'd like to see the Marines Errant chapter scheme.
That can be arranged. Solid choice.

Love both there schemes so that is a great idea.
if you could have a tutorial for Space Wolves, pls!
I have the Heresy version for them done, but they’re on my list for this series now too! Thanks for the request!

Iron Ravens
Interesting choice.
I always like the Howling Griffins ever since they were in a huge apocalypse game in white dwarf way back during the Armageddon campaign
I remember that one! That was epic!
Great video mate, im thinking about Howling Griffons for my Leviathan boxed set, do you think Grey seer or Wraithbone would be best?
I always use a zenithal coat of Grey Seer over a full coat of Chaos Black!
Great stuff, glad to see how it is done your way. I only suggested Howling Griffons recently. Talk about service!

I’d love to do them. So you mite indeed get it sooner then you think.
