Ok guys, you asked for them and I was only too happy to paint the glorious Celestial Lions! Don't let their simple paint scheme fool you, this Space Marine Chapter is awesome. Please don't just take this video as their full lore drop, their history is expansive and full of epic moments. I'd love to see more of these guys out on battlefields, so let me know if I've won you over to get some painted! We need a name for these lore drop/painting tutorial series-any ideas?
PS
I'll be giving away different codes for Warhammer videogames over on Twitch this Thursday (May 21st) while also streaming the classic Space Marine game! Hopefully I'll be able to stream Space Marine 2 soon...?

Screaming Skull (layer) Light drybrush over the top!
Paint List:
Chaos Black (This coat makes the metallic spray adhere better!)

One day of sun in ireland and ya boy got a farmers tan. Love it 👍🏻
Hahahaha damn it
How about Mediocre Chapters???? 🤣👍
The Mediocre Marines!
Hahahhaha nice.
Awesome faction, fun fact, they are the only ethnically black chapter in the lore too!
Yes they are indeed!
Couples of names for the series.
Chapter Approved.
Codex Compliant.
Vaults of the Chapter.
Chaptorium Scholastica.
I'm always happy to see more love for the Sons of Dorn. My Crimson Fists might be seeing the table top soon at an all-day tournament at my local.
Great suggestions.
Please do Relictors, I've not seen anyone do them. Or Mortifactors
Would love to see Mortifactors. Don’t think I’ve ever seen them done proper, even when I tried
Sounds good.
Darn ork snipers!
Hahhaha
How about "The Painted Lore" for the series name.
I like that!
I absolutely love the Celestial Lions. They're a fantastic chapter with a great story. I used to have a pretty sizeable force of them a few years back. Unfortunately I had to sell them. I still regret that. Maybe I'll start over one day.
If you do, you need to use Ork Sniper bodies as tactical rocks.
Go for it!
You should there amazing.
How about "Chapter Chat"....
Not bad.
I like the lore section too Andy, plenty of space marines painting videos out there already but doing a mini delve into the lore makes these video's that little bit extra.
Glad you’re enjoying them Pam.
"Paint The Chapters"
Great choice.
You should definitely do an emperor's spear next!! To protect Elera's vale with the lion
I love the spears.
Hey Andy love this Celestial Lions paint scheme!
Really straight forward
Hi mate, I love my Raptors chapter; for the cloaks, I use Dirty Down Moss...works a treat
Probably green then I’d say. I love raptors.
do my army, dark sons, has no lore just a tricky colour scheme
I shall have a look.
@@MediocreHobbies cheers lad do
Would be nice to see your take on either the White Panthers or the Angels Encarmine - I always liked the idea of the Angels Encarmine having the pure white Death Company Armour and Sanguinary Guard with white armour and black wings - when I had the DC Dread with Blood Talons before, I had the visual of the white Dreadnought with the blood splatter from the Talons smearing across the front armour panels around the Sarcophagus as a visual.
Great choices.
FireHawks chapter (later known as legion of damned)
That is no longer true.
@@MediocreHobbies they changed that part of lore too? Maaan
@@peterkristof6357 it’s way cooler now. And makes a lot of sense.
Mediocre Founding
Interesting.
I'm black and when I found out about the Celestial Lions, it made me so happy. I'm going to go paint a few of them now!
Aw that’s awesome man, they’re a great chapter! Enjoy 😊
I almost painted an army of these but realised quite quickly I hate painting gold lol
Hahaha just spray them, no time at all!
I painted a last wall army , all the sons of dorn 2nd fonding as well as first, then sold it all great bid
I love that.
When deciding which chapter to paint for a Kill Team, I came across the Dark Kraken, pretty cool primaris only Salamander successor chapter.
They sound ace.
"Myths and Medium"?
"War Paints"?
"Chapters and Paint-Slappers"? 😋
Haha not bad.
I almost picked Celestial Lions but ended up going with Executioners
Both ace chapters. Love them both.
Call it The Next Chapter - nice and simple!
Nice choice.
Stylish Successors. :)
You could do Cowled Wardens? They got new lore in the latest Dark Angels codex and I found you can basically do them with a version of your Black Templar scheme.
Oh nice. I shall have a look.
Try starting with an Espresso Brown base, I generally recommend the Kyrlon rattle cans GW quality for less than half the price, and then dry brushing on the gold. Its what I did with mine and looks fantastic. Also, works well with custodes, obviously.
Good tip! Thank you!
Yasssss, Celestial Lions are my favourite chapter, such a depth of lore to them (mostly heartbreaking and tragic sadly). I have a load of bits saved for making a force of them including those old Stormcast lion shoulder pads and for the Chapter Master, the lightning claw from the forgeworld Lufgt Huron model. I think my summer project is decided ✨🦁
Stormcast shoulder pads is an epic idea...you gotta do it! Please post any updates soon!
Sons of the Phoenix would be really cool, a good opportunity to paint white but I don't think there's enough lore on them to be fun even though they're theorized to be Emperor's Children successors
What about the Mantis Warriors, Astral Claws, heck a lot of the Badab war chapters would be awesome!!
Great video as always Andy
All great chapters.
Excellent scheme and video Andy. Thank you for painting this. Can't wait to see what you do next - another shameless plug for the Executioners please :D
Haha they're on the list, don't worry! Glad you're enjoying the series!
How about "Codex Compliant" as a title?
Also, would be great to see you paint a Storm Warden for this, Andy 😄👍
Great chapter with great lore
They are a great chapter.
I'm working on a Chaplain for the Lions but am trying to pick parts. I know I'm using a Greytides Studios Lion head pauldron and was thinking of doing a lion-esque helmet with a painted on skull. The base body I'm using has a full tabard and was trying to decide if it should be blue or gold.
Ye there Are some great options out there for them.
Didn't finish commenting... Black Dragons are my vote - though to truly make their colour scheme more exciting, the mini needs to be converted
Hahah they are a tricky one. But a cool one.
I always loved these guys! Tried to stand to the inquisition for their misdeeds (which nearly lead to their chapter being destroyed), even when being killed and sabotaged by Inquisitorial agents they were missive boons in the third war of Armageddon, was deemed honorable enough by Chaplain Grimaldus that he ignored their request of a final stand, and then when Grimaldus was faced with a Warboss that was giving him trouble the Celestial Lion Chapter Master strolled in and asked to one v one it and was able to keep it still long enough for Grimaldus to kill it at the cost of his arm and leg.
Was sad that the Chapter Master was killed when he returned to their home world (if I'm remembering right). Thinking back on it now, I decide to paint my Space Marines has any of the sons of Dorn (and maybe sons of Sanguinius now too) guess adding a unit of Lions wouldn't be too bad.
Also, great work on the model it looks amazing!
There such great chapter.
Yea I repainted my 4 000 points ish at the time of Imperial Fists to Celestial Lions (Same primers and blue used here) and I love it!
It started in 9th and I refused to play my Imperial Fists as Ironhands etc so I repainted them and the other 2 000 points after that have been fun to paint, its so motivating to get things quickly on the table as bettle ready then finish them up when you feeling it.
Yes to that last point! Being able to play and then going back after a game or two to add more details is great!
I’ve been meaning to do Bringers of Judgement for a while. Interesting painting challenge and lore.
I like that.
Hell yeah, a friend of mine did Celestial Lions way back when we were kids. Except, he misspelled the name on his army list and they will forever be the Celestial Loins to me. I'd like to see a video on the White Panthers or Mortifactors!
😂😂😂😂 I would never let him live that down either!!
Added to the list, thanks for the suggestions!
I need to paint up a squad or two to go with my Emperor’s Spears! Lovely and fast, would like to see you try the knee emblem the 3 sentinel chapters shared
Great idea.
It depends how fussy you are but you might be able to use 28mm medieval shield transfers although normally they are the Lion rampant which is similar to the bret design you used. So far never been able to just find a Lions head.
Not a bad choice at all.
Good job on this guy Andy, a very effective scheme. And yep yellow jackets are real, I hadn’t heard of them either till a recent trip to Warhammer world where i noticed one in their “lots of different marine colour scheme cabinet”. Another cool one to see would be the star phantoms as they don’t get much love.
Great ideas.
I loved that Novel between the Templars and the Lions. I also would love to make a small combat force of them eventually.
Yes!! Oh that would be cool, no excuses now with my tutorials 😄
@@MediocreHobbies How true how true! lol
Andy painted Stormcast Eternal and though no one would notice
HahahHa Damit.
Could you the black dragons ? And maybe add the bone spurs ?
Perhaps yes.
omg that's awesome. I've just 3D printed a load of 15mm scale marines and now I know what scheme to do em in.
Oh yeah this would be perfect for them!
Should go with nova marines Mr Pepsi himself
Haha solid choice.
What color would you recommend the cloth suits for the new scout models for this chapter?
There’s a few of them done online, no official art so it’s up to you really. Check out the examples online and see if you like any of them!
Some of the more niche chapters in the 3rd ed book would be interesting like the relictors
On the list!
You should make a custom chapter! Give us that homebrew madness lore.
Hmm not a bad idea, will have a think!
I started a minotaurs force with the leviathan boxset marines, added more red into the mix just to break up all the bronze
Oh very cool idea!
quick but super impressive paint job! :)
Thanks so much!
👍
Cheers.
It's a bit of a riff on another channel I watch but how about Space Marine 101: celestial lions etc.
Ye can’t be steeling stiff from other channels lol.
Great vid! What about Relictors or Exorcists!
Solid choice s
I'd like to see a Celestial Lions scout painted. What colour would the pants be?
There's a few examples online of people's full army schemes for them, can't find any official artwork so you'd free to choose what you think would look best with them!
That is net color scheme! Thanks for sharing this and the lore behind the chapter.
you're very welcome, happy to spread the word about these guys!
Must get back to work on my army of Ork snipers....
Oof! Careful now..
Just thought of a name for the series "Lore by The Brush" I think would sound pretty cool!
That is pretty cool
A Badab War series would be fun- astral claws etc
I'll second that, great story and the raptors are my absolute favourite chapter 😊
Oh yes sir.
How about a fan base chapter? The angry marines
I hate them. And everything they stand for.
Loving this series of yours so far mate, would love to see you paint more obscure chapters whilst giving us their lore!!!!
That's the plan! Lots of suggestions so will be going for a while!
Ooh, how about "Adeptus Obscurities"...?
Never heard of them.
how come you prime it in black before the retributor armor?
It’s in the description!
Very simple name but how about the Chapters
It's simple but i like it!
Atlantian Spears would be awesome
On the list, thank you!
How about having a go at the Lamenters chapter
Officially on the list!
Love hearing the lore…. Ta Andy 👍🏼
I'm enjoying sharing it, makes chatting over painting clips a lot easier :D
How are assaukt intercessors NOT BATTLELINE?
I think they are.
@@MediocreHobbies I think you are right, I believe I was previously misinformed.
I actually bought and used some celestial lion transfers for my Bretonnians, however i plan to paint an army soon! I also got a Redemptor upgrade from Pop goes the monkey for the lions which i cant wait to use!
another suggestion, Atlantian spears!
Atlantian Spears added to the list, thank you!
Haha that's funny we did it the opposite way around with the transfers!!
Excellent can’t wait to see it mate!
GW used to have a book series called "Index Astartes" that was all lore and pictures of space marine chapters.
Oh I love that. And I have that book.
@@MediocreHobbies it was a whole series, IIRC 4 or 5 of them.
Great video. Keep them coming
Thanks! Will do!
I’d argue iron hands are easier to paint
You may, but these guys are way cooler :D
Andy's Astartes Anthology!
I like that.
Shoutout for Storm Reapers 🔥🔥
Solid choice.
Looks awesome as always, loved it 🙂
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it!
easy and effective paint scheme .
and a great chapter too!
Would like to see Red Hunters
Great choice.
Space Marine digest 😂
Hahhahaah
IRON SNAKES PLEASE‼️🙏
added to the list!
Black templar saving their fellow sons of dorn the celestial lions sounds so badass. I gotta look this up. Also love hearing about your enthusiasm for this chapter Mediocre hobbies i could tell how excited you are for them. Thanks for the vid!
Yes please do look up more info on them-there's just so many cool things about them! Glad you enjoyed the video and my passion came through!
Knew nothing about the 'Celestial Lions' until today. Thank you for tweaking my interest.
Oh awesome, love sharing about them, really do love their lore and connection to black Templars as well!
Rainbow Warriors would be cool!
Feel like there coved by rouge hobbies.
@@MediocreHobbies I think there is enough space on UA-cam for two Rainbow Warriors tutorials. ;-)
Dark krakens?
Added to the list seeing as you said it twice 😄
Celestial Lions is a cool name and that's a cool scheme. Like an inverted Ultramarine with the gold and blue.
There so cool.
this looks very cool, just like the painted blood ravens. cannot wait for more of this
Awesome, glad people are liking the series!
Wow
Cheers
You did a great job with the Lion. :)
Cheers.
