@@BigBoyBillSneed I had been thinking that, with all the King Arthur inspired custom chapters, it'd be cool to see one that's based on the paladins of Charlemagne, but I was today years old when I learned that one already kinda exists.
This is what I love about Warhammer, the Howling Griffins were a small chapter, a footnote almost in the badab war and they have this much lore about them? That's so awesome!! All of these have been really good Ian!
I recall the first ttime they showed up in a white dwarf around 2nd edition, presented as a 'made up' chapter by one of the GW staff (I think one of the americans?) who just made them up because he liked the colour scheme. All the lore came much much later

First of all, "Feudal" is a way to structure society (serfs owing fealty to lords, who in turn owe fealty to other lords), not a description of tech level. Most of the Imperium is "Feudal" in the sense that worlds are bound by a succession of levels of lordly obligation, with each level having broad power to govern their domain as they see fit. That doesn't mean they aren't technologically advanced...at least, compared to us in Real Life. Second, while the normal citizens of Mancora might live in what might be described as "Medieval" (pre-industrial, agrarian, fight with spears and horses, etc), that doesn't mean there isn't technology present. It's just that such technology and industry are monopolized by the Howling Griffins themselves, for their purposes. The rich and powerful hoard all the "Good Shit" for themselves. Same with Knight Worlds, where you have medieval serfs overseen by lords in big stompy robots.
@@WozWozEre Makes you think, how does the chapter respond when a lowly blacksmith tries to replicate those Bolt Gun things they see the tall people walking around with.
A bit of supplementary reading around the lexicanum wiki has revealed that Mancora is also listed as a Knight World. Honestly, given the more knightly overtones of the Griffons, this is kind of a perfect coincidence.
These types of videos are why I love this channel. lol am I the only one who hopes they do a video for every space marine chapter!?!?!? Also, this is why I will never be able to choose just one space marine chapter to claim!!!! They are all awesome
This seems like a cool one for a Badab Crusade game because in Crusade you really get to know your guys, and being the last of a battle group really helps you get intimate with your little army men.
Hey Ian. Just recently discovered your channel and really enjoying it. Did you know back in the mists of time, GW had a mail in competition for fans and gamers to “invent” a chapter ? The winner would have theirs painted up by the evy’ metal team! Well the winner was the Howling Griffons and I remember the creator saying he chose their colours based on Watford FC !!
Yeeesss! One of my favourite successor chapters, along with (in this order) the Storm Wardens, the Guardians of the Covenant, and the Dark Hunters. Thanks for making this, Ian!!
Another great video as usual! I know it'll probably be one of the later videos in the series, but I am sooo excited to see the Arbitor himself discuss the best SM chapter there is ... The Minotaurs!!!
I kinda seen these guys before but never paid them much mind, gotta say they instantly rose up high in my Marine chapter rankings after seeing this video ^^
this was the original chapter that i looked at way back in the day and said " NOPE...not painting those..." However they are solid chapter! Great Video as always, Cheers all!
I have had 2 howling griffons armies in the past, and nearly made a third when i saw the artwork with the bladeguard marines from one of the newer space marine codex. Dont tempt me again!
I have a real soft spot for the Griffons. Partly because they were the first chapter we painted Marines as (well, if you don't count my terribly repainted Space Crusade models anyway lol) but also I remember what I'm pretty sure was there first ever mention, as a painted army on the back cover of a White Dwarf issue (back in the early 90s when WD used to have battle scenes/army photos on the back cover and nothing else)
I encountered the Howling Griffons in the Soul Drinkers novel "Chapter War". Many years later I can finally paint yellow and I can't stop painting them. Mercaeno might be the coolest Librarian ever to exist.
awesome video like always! since you are doing chapter origin story videos now, I always wondered if there are any loyalist space marine chapters that originate from traitor legions / traitor geneseed! I heard a rumour that the blood ravens from the dawn of war games originate from the thousand sons but I only find conflicting sources for that. are there even any loyalist chapters with these origins?
I have a strange fascination with the Storm Giants, despite them having virtually no lore and being a very rare pre-Primaris successor to the Salamanders.
i remember in gw bristol in the 90's there was a chap called Fred who worked there and had painted a whole company of these dudes to eavy mental standard a crazy achievement at the time considering how shit reds and yellows covered in those days It was later featured in white dwarf, he was a lovely guy and a great help to a young gamer like me trying to paint like that :) if ya see this Fred thanks mate will never forget you
Space Marine 2 lets you get damn close to this livery. I have been enjoying confusing folks dressed as Dork Angels or Ultramachines with my blazing red and yellow. Or is it yellow and red?

First of all, "Feudal" is a way to structure society (serfs owing fealty to lords, who in turn owe fealty to other lords), not a description of tech level.
