Beware of curl envy! Curlier isn’t better, it’s just different. Wavies like me can be prone to wanting our hair to be curly when it’s just not. Certainly encourage your waves or curls to be all they can be but embrace what YOUR hair wants to be. And that float porosity test is notoriously inaccurate - don’t bother, just do the stretch test.
This is for real. My waves suck to me if I compare them to curly hair. My hair is NOT curly. Doesn’t help that my daughter is half black with glorious amazing curls.. then there is my frizzy mess.. lol 😂 the wavy girl method is not for the faint of heart
It's like a inner competition against oneself, trying to get the curlier the better... But I believe waves are also beautiful. If your hair is wavy or curly it doesn't matter as much as if it is healthy and as enhanced as it can be! I used to struggle with this as well, because mine is not consistent all around my head, but I have grown to love it and to accept that it has a life of its own XD
I used to scrunch the living hell out of my wavy hair, and it did make my curls wicked tight. The pictures of it are kind of crazy, made it honestly look 2C. But eventually, it gave me serious breakage. Now I just shake it out and it works really well. Do I have those tighter 2C curls? No, but I still have those spirals that make a 3-dimensional shape...they're just longer and not as...chunky?? But it still looks good and...NO BREAKAGE!
T M H I usually have to do this as well because my hair is sooo tangly. From my experience the wet brush is pretty good, especially compared with paddle brushes
@@nicki_thurston8 I got one recently, and I've been very happy with the results! Mell and her seester use them in most of their styling videos if you need a reference.
As an extremely curly haired little girl in the 90s/early 2000s, I can attest: NO hairstylist was trained on styling curly hair. My hair was my biggest insecurity and I left every haircut crying because no one could make my hair “pretty.” It was always just frizzy, puffy and huge and I thought I just had bad hair. It wasn’t until my 20s when I started researching on the internet (and even tried the CG method!) that I realized all the hairstylists I went to just didn’t know how to work with my super thick super curly mane.
I completely understand, had my hair blow dried since a very young age ... as know one knew has to handle it 🙈.... but know it’s amazing with the confidence of loving my natural curls 🤩
Same! 3C here, one hairdresser cut my hair dry with a spray bottle. Safe to say I never went back. 30+ years living with my curls and am still working it out.
Same!! Except my hair is very fine so when I do it in the shower, it dries frizzy! I like to brush my hair before I shower when my hair is dry, then go in with all my treatments and stylers!
Yes, wavy/ curly hair doesn’t want to be brushed. She is certainly not the first woman to not realize her hair is textured. If your hair doesn’t want to lay smoothly or it seems like it’s fluffy that’s probably because it’s textured. Try not brushing it and see what happens.
I started my "curly hair journey" 2 years ago and my biggest tip is to be patient with your hair and don't compare it to other people's curls your hair will become more used to the process and in time may become curlier. Also have fun with it! (I have 2b/2c waves)
Preach on the not complicating it! Also been CG for the past two years and the amount of products can be so overwhelming, try not to chop and change products on every wash. Patience is key!
@@WonholoveASMR so far I've really enjoyed the SGX NYC curl power cream and aussie's instant freeze gel then air drying till my hair is about 80% dry then diffusing with my blowdryer 😁 hope this helps you out!
I hope this means we'll get more curly/wavy hair style tutorials! For Anna Laura-- every curly hair is different, so experiment with methods. Shorter hair = more defined curls. Sometimes scrunching/messing with it too much as it dries will break up curls and create a frizzy mass, which is why I let it air dry overnight as I sleep! I kinda just scrunch it up above my head on the pillow and wake up with big, loose ringlets. Keep in mind that "curly hair" is a big spectrum and what works for the very curly girls doesn't necessarily work on wavier hair.
I highly recommend you both trying CurlMix, it’s a little pricey but truly natural ingredients, that WORK so well well worth it. I have curlier type 3b-4a hair, but I know people with wavy hair who love CurlMix too, and you’ll get longer use out of the products since your curls/waves are looser. I would also agree with some of the other comments here that your hair should be much wetter when styling, and I personally find it easiest to de-tangle in the shower with conditioner in my hair. Again my hair is thicker than yours, but I can hear the brush pulling at her strands and I think that can be avoided easily with just a few tweaks. I also HIGHLY recommended a michel mercier hair brush. My mom has thick wavy hair, and we both use these brushes and it’s MAGIC. There are little to no pulls and they get all of the knots out of our hair and we have different hair types. It’s a must have IMO. Along with that, I deranged AND style in the shower, if you’re not doing that just make sure that your hair is REALLY wet when applying products. And then I just diffuse and maybe take some excess water out with a micro-fiber towel on the ends.
Maya Sarram I saved up to buy that too and once I stopped my curls BOUNCED UP. I started wearing my hair natural and after 6-7 months I stopped using it and my hair has literally grown so much faster and and my curls changed from 2b/c to 3 a/b within the 3 months I stopped using that gel and I have only been natural for a year now. Also that stuff made my scalp so itchy all the time and I really don’t know why I kept using it but yeah DONT.
My best friend used diva curl for about two years and she just couldn't understand why her hair was getting worse and worse. She kept on trying different techniques (she was just beginning her curly journey at that time), but it wasn't until recently that she discovered it was the products making her hair worse and not anything she had been doing. We have nicknamed those products DEMON CURL😭
We have the same curl type, 2b/2c I have helped dozens of friends go curly! Penny tovar and India batson were what got me into curly hair styling. With our curl type, follow India's sitting rule of no brushing. Plopping can work, but I find i don't like it with my hair type. Try these products: -Love Beauty and planets salt spray -Not your mother's curl talk line (any of these products!) -Cantu curl activator cream -Shea moisture yogurt leave in conditioner and protein treatment Those have worked for me. Some of them even give me ringlets! Good luck and have fun!:-)
O my gosh girl first things first 😁 you wash your hair downwards. After rinsing conditioner you squeeze the water out from the ends toward scalp - squish squish helping the waves/curls form. You need very damp hair to apply any styling product so use your towel to a minimum. Also it's best to use microfiber material or an old cotton tshirt (works like a charm) 😊 I don't like combing the styling products, it works mostly for a very curly girls. I just squeeze them in to my hair again helping them bounce. Then leave it to dry a little and then use the blow dryer with the diffusor 😊 BTW I learned to love my wavy hair and I encourage all you guys to keep your hair natural - stay away from flat iron ;)
Sorry to sound daft, I'm trying to retrain my waves! When you say wash your hair downwards, is that as in head upside down? And is that for the whole washing process or just for the conditioning? 😊
@@DancingCupcake24 you can wash it normally if you for ex. have a shower and its easier. Condition I would say better to apply head upside down 😊 it gaves better volume and helps your waves start closer to your scalp. Rinse head upside down then squeeze water in tshirt or microfiber towel and style it (mousse, cream gel -what your curls like) :) fingers crossed 🤞
I started the curly girl method about 3 months ago (and mel is one of my favourites). I have a very similar pattern to anna-laura (2b-2c, on good days 3a). Just some tips for more wavy than curly hair: raiking/ finger coiling does not work for me because i dont have enough of a wave. I look just like anna-laura without it (just saves time). I like my hair better when refreshing it the first time (only some water). I am a rough sleeper and havent found a good way to protect my hair. I just live with some of the frizz. product recommendation: cantu curl activating cream (mel's sister loves it as well ;)) Most usefull tip for me: love your hair and dont give up. Everyone has a bad hair day, just put your hair up. And dont be too religious about some of the curly girl rules
Hi ! I'm a french curly girl for over a year now and I have some types for you ! First, even if ManesByMel gives very good advice, I would recommend you to watch more wavy girl. For example, I really love Swavy Curly Courtney because she really shows how much product she applies and how she applies it. IndiaBatson is really good for wavy hair too (her hair is soooo gorgeous) ! You have to test every techniques to find which one is the best ! And the most important lesson that I have learn is that you don't have to be afraid to put A LOT of gel and product in the hair ! I hope that AnnaLaura is going to become a curly girl ! That is one of the best thing that happen to me : to finally understand that my hair is curly and not just a mess that I can't handle PS : I love your videos and that is the first time in the 6 years that I follow you that I post a comment !
Yes! I was going to say this too. Check out those wavy hair UA-camrs. The super curly girls aren't going to be quite as helpful for your (and my) hair type.
Yes! I have a wide tooth comb that hangs in my shower and I put conditioner in, detangle and leave it for a few minutes. This has been a game changer! My hair is way less frizzy and way less tangled when I get done.
I find that with my 2b/3a hair not using a brush really helps. I just detangle in the shower and apply all of my products with my hair upside down. It's so exciting seeing someone start on their journey and I hope you figure out what works best with your hair!
The thing that helps me most with keeping my natural 2C-3A curl is rinsing with cool/cold water and not touching my hair if I'm letting it dry naturally after I apply product and scrunch. Just let it do it's thing. The cool water helps to avoid frizz. My hair was completely straight when I was a kid but got curly like my mom's after puberty, so it is possible she might just not have "found the curl" yet. Good luck!
My mom has curly hair and she has such a hard time finding a hairstylist who can cut and handle her hair correctly. Also, I just started playing around with my hair and I think I have a wave. I would love it if you touched on looser waves like 2A/2B and how to get on a WAVY hair journey versus curly. Lol.
@@KristianaGrigorova If you want a few tips, I also have long wavy hair: A Denman brush really helps defining the hair closer to my scalp, there are a lot of videos on using that (Manes by Mell has a few!) and I take smaller sections on the top of my head so my top layer is a little lighter than the rest and they hold their curl better. Also using higher hold products or lighter (like, less heavy creamy) products could help. Of course I don't know what you're using right now. If you want the definition up top though you will probably sacrificing a little in the volume department, and vice versa. I also don't 'hover-diffuse' because it tends to elongate/stretch out my waves, which I don't want. Just scrunch-and-hold with the blow dryer and I put it on medium speed/heat because I feel like I 'blow out my curls' if I go higher with the speed; that could be more of a mental thing, though. Haven't tried it in ages haha! I hope this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to ask!
For me I learned to go to someone who comes from a place where a lot of people have curls. Like I only go to kurdish hairdressers. It also helps if the hairdresser has curly hair herself 🤗
Depending on the products, styling, and environmental factors my hair ranges from a 2c to a 3b. There are a few big things I’ve found helpful to keep it in the 3 range. First, I only brush my hair with an actual brush in the shower. When I’m out, I use a wide tooth comb. Even though my hair is still wet, using the brush brakes up my hair a lot more and it curls in much smaller wavy sections rather than bigger curly sections I get with the comb. I also comb it while upside down. I find that it helps my roots curl and I get more volume. Second, I make sure that when ever I’m working with my hair it’s wet enough to have the “squish” sound. Then when I’m done I scrunch my hair with a microfiber towel to get a lot of the water out that would weigh down my hair while drying. Last, my hairs a similar length to AnnaLaura’s and when I use the diffuser it sometimes creates a little bit of a weird curl pattern that doesn’t match what would happen if it air drys. When I have time I let it air dry but scrunch it without any producer about every 5ish minutes. I really hope this is helpful! Y’all have saved my hairs life so many times that I can never truly pay you back but at least this is something! Thank you so much for all your videos and positive energy!
I felt bad watching her brush it with so little water! I bet it would have turned out even curlier if she had applied the products on soaking wet hair :)
ItzBreanna! Mine started at 2b and is now 3a/b. (One year later) I had a lot of heat damage (6/7 years) and didn’t cut it all off. You might even have curlier hair. I wish you luck continuing!
Hey Kayley and AnnaLaura try out not your mother's curl talk line there afforable and great and Bianca Renee another curl influencer also suggest Curlsmith.
YOU NEED SO MUCH MORE WATER!!!!! Just from watching I can tell her ends are too dry. The water makes a huge difference in the way that your hair absorbed product
As a curly haired gal, it’s disappointing that our hairs aren’t taught in school- but it makes a lot of sense now. The amount of haircuts that look horrible when my hair is natural etc. and if I ever ask them to style my hair curly out of the salon I always hate it lol
The only thing I was taught in school about curly hair was to not stretch it as much during a cut. A lot of my curly haired friends come to me for cuts because I basically self taught how to cut curly hair
Glitter Tana Beauty I’m glad you self taught :) yeah my hair gets like almost 4 inches longer when straight, so even when I want a trim and they cut way more and when it’s curly, it’s soo much shorter lol
1. Raking and brushing are better for very curly hair. Wavy hair is better left undisturbed to help clumps form. 2. Squish to condish, deep conditioning and regular cuts are crucial to get rid of dry ends and frizz. 3. And yeah, as everyone said YOU NEED WAY MORE WATER 🤣 4. Experiment with the plop - my hair hates plopping for any longer than 2 mins lol the longer i wear it the less volume and definition i get. My hair prefers a wet plop 🙂 5. Doooont touch your hair while drying it 🤣 6. Good luck with your journey, you have beautiful hair!
I binge-watched a whole bunch of Swavy Curly Courtney on UA-cam. I just started my curly hair journey 3 weeks ago with info I got from her. Agreed with other commenters... Brush hair in the shower after conditioner has been sitting in it for a couple minutes. Scrunch in your gel in the shower with sopping wet hair. I am too lazy to diffuse so I just squeeze out some moisture with microfiber towel then air dry and then "scrunch the crunch out". On second day hair I spritz with lots of water to reactivate the gel and scrunch again.
I'm a newly discovered wavy! I love watching the reactions other people are having finding out they are wavy or curly! I remember the first time my hair was wavy after a haircut, and I was so thrilled that it had wave. My whole life I thought my hair was stick straight, and it turns out I was sooooooo wrong.
@@corina.grindeanu thank you! My mother has curly, probably 3B hair, and I was always jealous. But now I'm researching the best ways to keep my waves heathy... yes I know having it died blue doesnt help... lol! But its so much prettier now than it was before.
I scrunch out the crunch gently with a cotton towel or tshirt after it's fully dry whether it be air drying or diffusing. Play with your products, if it feels like its weighing your curls down then it's best to not use it. I found travel sizes of products to try before buying the bigger bottles.
I'm so happy to see you, as a white woman, learn more about curly hair. (traditionally mostly black women know about curly hair and are the ones that started the curly girl method bc it's how we've taken care of our hair for forever), I have very curly and thick hair and I've never been able to go to a hairdresser ever in my entire life. it's crazy that they don't teach you about all hair types as well as different ethnic hair types in such a modern and international world. I'm 21 and next month I will be going to a hairdresser tho - finally found one that not only knows about curly hair but specializes in it!! I'm so excited ☺️
I really love your candidness and integrity! Taking care of curly hair is a learning process all the way, and it's nice to see other people in the beginning stages of learning too. And love the credit you gave to other channels. Manes by Mel is the best!
As someone with a healthy mix of 2c and 3a curls, I can say that some of her pieces are probably more of a 2b than a 2c, and my tips would be: 1, always style with your hair VERY wet. It should sound smushy. 2, don't brush your hair after your hair gets damp, unless it's soaking don't brush it, and brush it the least amount possible! 3, listen to your hair. Curl envy is a huge thing, but your hair is beautiful. Try to embrace what your hair is wanting to do. 😊
I've been on my journey for a year & I have some tips for you guys! Always detangle in the shower if you have wavy curly 2b hair, which AnnaLaura seems to have currently. Otherwise you brush out your curls & lose your clumps. Using a wide tooth comb usually works better, helps with clumping. Do not use a detangling brush in place of a Denman brush! They do not have the same purpose. Denman defines curls. Please do not plop overnight. Too much moisture can lead to bad bacteria on your scalp. 20 mins is fine. Flip your head upside down & break your curls at the root :) "fluff" it out! My routine- Wash/condition right side up, comb when hair has conditioner in it. Out of shower- hair is dripping wet. Part hair gently. Try not to break any clumps. Scrunch in curl cream, volumizing mousse/foam, gel, & then mouss/foam again. Plop 20 min. Gently part any large clumps. Hover diffuse. Let cast stay hard for 30 mins-1 hr before breaking/fluffing with oil. SwavyCurlyCourtney is another amazing UA-camr to learn from. Manes by Mel does a video on the porosity test. Check it out! Check out DevaCurl, Zotos All About Curls, MopTop, CurlSmith, and Not Your Mother's. :)
Always detangle in the shower, always scrunch shampoo and conditioner upside down in the shower for more volume, always section when putting product in the hair after a wash, always move the curls (carefully) in different directions to confuse the root (again, more volume), and every once in a while if the hair is lacking moisture, treat it with a hair mask to reset the curls and give them a breath of fresh air 😊 - From a curly girl (3a-3b) ❤️
I already loved the salon I went to, but when all of the stylists were required to do curly hair training I knew I'd never leave them. It's so refreshing when salons keep their stylists educated on how to style all kinds of hair! So it's nice to see influencers doing the same to make us curly haired gals feel included 😊
I have wavy hair, 2b/2c. I like to finger comb in leave-in conditioner when my hair is wet. Then I flip my head over and shake it at the roots. I scrunch in some foam and plop with a t-shirt for around 30 minutes. Then I air dry or diffuse. Also, flipping and shaking my hair out after drying always adds a lot of fullness and volume. Lately I have been sleeping in two Dutch braids, which gives me very pretty waves.
Hey, I'm currently over 1 and a half year into my own curly girl journey. Personally, now that my hair is healthier, I actually really benefit from brushing it dry before washing it to have fewer tangles during shampooing. The slip in the conditioner means that I don't feel knots until it tugs and hurts on my roots, so I'd say its personal preference on the brushing front. As for accounts, I'd highly recommend Real Life + Curly Girl on youtube. Some videos might be a bit older, but the information and the science behind the advice she provides is truly amazing. She also got through cosmetology school and is opening her curly hair saloon RN, so you bet she knows what she is talking about. Good luck on your journey, and don't get too fussed about your number on the chart ;)
ALWAYS detangle in the shower with a head full of conditioner. Try finger combing first, then wide-toothed comb, then wet brush if really needed. Allow the flow of water to help detangle as you comb if it is particularly knotted. Also, AnnaLaura's hair was waaaay too dry when you were sectioning and brushing. Keep it sopping wet that whole time, and you will significantly reduce your frizz and increase definition. AL, your hair is beautiful, and I am excited for you to be on your curly adventure! As a curly who embraced the curl in middle school about twenty years ago, I can say we have come a long way, but it is still so hard to find stylists that know how to treat our hair. Thank you for looking to learn! I cut my own hair now, but it would be so nice to find stylists with more diverse training.
The most important things to know when starting your curl journey is that moisture is key (avoid products with sulfate, silicone, and isopropyl alcohol) and you need to let your hair do what it's going to do. That means avoiding Denman brushes until your hair has a consistent curl pattern. I always recommend the curly girl method when someone is first starting to go curly. Anna Laura your hair is gorgeous!
Writing this comment before I've finished the video, so pardon if my "story" isn't as related as I think it might be. I went to bed the night before an exam of mine, suddenly realizing I forgot to shower. After that, I was too tired to comb my hair as I usually did after showering, so I went to bed with it wet and tied into a ponytail. Next morning? POOF CURLS! I was... shocked to say the least. I had curls as a kid, but everyone assumed they were baby curls, so my hair was treated as straight my whole life until I was like 20 and found out like this by mistake 😂
I used to always prefer taking showers at night and going to sleep with my hair wet because my hair always got a lot more wave to it the next day even if it looked a little bit crazy sometimes lol. Now I'm trying to figure out how to best take care of my hair and what products to use
That’s pretty much my story too! I always like my hair when I go to bed with wet hair, but if I wash my hair in the morning and brush it, it’s mostly straight and the back is frizzy. Turns out, with some products and scrunching, I actually have waves and some spiral curls. My hair in the front sections is a lot straighter than the back, but I’ve learned to embrace it. I straightened my hair every day for work before quarantine, and I had months to try different curly girl steps to see what works.
I have naturally curly hair. I literally just shampoo and condition (fave right now is Dove) then Herbal Essence mousse. Then defuse for best results, but air dry is fine in a rush. If crunchy feeling then I scrunch with my hands upwards and I have soft curls.
Like most comments I would recommend doing everything in the shower though doing it on video is difficult lol. The brush looked like it had teeth very close together which would increase frizz and not give definition which is the intent. So a wide tooth comb or simple finger detangling would be perfect for her. I have two curly haired girls so I love this content!
I remember subscribing a long time ago to your channel, and ultimately stopped watching because a lot of your styles were primarily for girls with straight hair. Every so often you would say how to help girls with curly hair, but usually require using some sort of heat or required us to go straight before hand. As a curly girl, I adore that you and your sister have decided to start to film the curl girl journey. Thank you so much for filming this, and please give updates on what else you ladies try, what works, what doesn’t. It makes me really happy and I look forward to getting to see your sister’s results and yours if you try to see if you have a little more texture than what you thought! 💛💛💛💛
You two are definetely the friendliest, kindest people on UA-cam! I feel like you are my sisters 🤗 Thank you so much for all of your videos and kindness! ♥️ And Anna Laura's hair looks unbelievable! 😍
I've done this for a few months and got great results and I have similar hair texture as Anna laura has. I've read that the Denman brush works best for very curly hair and not so much for wavy hair. Also products need to be without certain ingredients (silicones, parabens, harsh sulfates and certain drying alcohols etc.) also don't brush the hair when wet. Actually you're supposed to not brush them at all (but if needed when dry right before the shower). When in the shower apply conditioner and and gel upside down on dripping wet hair in a scrunching motion and don't wash it out. It also matters what product you use for your hair type (the porosity and elasticity you mentioned). Some curly products might be too heavy and other won't work at all that others swear by... It's a lot of testing through different products and and techniques in the first weeks/months until you find what works best. ALSO all the information you can get in detail and explanation in the original book of the "curly girl method". That's where all this trend emerged from and got a revive in the last few years. :)
Many get a new layers haircut when they are committed to keep doing the curly gilr method. One that helps the curls spring a lot better then just a normal haircut.
It was weird seeing you brush the product through your hair after it was wet. I have to brush my hair before I wash it and detangle with my fingers, but if I brush my hair after it’s wet, it will not curl right...and it’s baddd.
I'm so excited for this. AnnaLaura, welcome to the curly side! Kayley, it makes me so happy to see your desire to learn about it. I have a lot of hair, so the main thing for me is sectioning it. I divide it in 4 main sections (if I'm feeling dedicated, 6), and subdivide them to apply leave-in. I comb the product through my hair with my fingers and scrunch it up. If I want to make it extra nice (like my profile pic) I add some lightweight gel after the leave-in. I also favor milder shampoos that won't dry my hair as much, use a satin pillowcase, and I don't really care about how my hair will look like the next day. It usually holds up well enough I don't feel the need to restyle it. One thing I've been told by some stylists (they're specialists on natural hair) is that when we straighten or pull out the curls regularly, the hair gets used to that form. I don't know what AnnaLaura's routine was before this, so it might be helpful to scrunch it up and avoid styles that will stretch out the curls (ballerina buns, for example). Best of luck in this journey! I'm sure you'll have a great time!
I have always thought I had wavy hair until I started trying the curl girl method. After only two weeks I already have more definition but after those two weeks I was not totally sold on the method and started watching a few of Mel’s videos. Through some trial and error I think I actually have 3a or 3b curls! Cheers to all the other curly girls out there who are also working on their curl journey! ❤️
So excited to see this! I let my hair go curly almost ten years ago, best decision I ever made. Something I'm you both will learn going forward is that there's no such thing as a one-size-fits-all curly routine, and a curly journey is a lot about getting to know your hair. It'll just be trial and error to find what works for you and fits your lifestyle, and the more familiar you get with your hair, the better you'll become at judging what will probably work without trying it (for example, I know that my hair prefers a gel that sets pretty hard and stiff, and a gel with a softer cast just won't give me the results I want). I've always loved this channel because I like doing new and exciting things with my hair, and over ten years I've gotten pretty good at adapting some straight styles for curly hair, but it's not always doable. I really hope you do more curly content going forward!!!
You guys did such a great job for the first time and got beautiful results! I’m so excited to see how the journey goes. Here’s what alterations to the routine I would suggest based on what I’ve learned from my time in the curly hair community: 1: I would detangle in the shower with conditioner and either a wide tooth comb or just your fingers. This’ll help to decrease the damage you might get from brushing wet hair and it’ll prep you for my next suggestion. 2: Apply your products in the shower to soaking wet hair. Like, dripping all over the place hair. That’ll help the product to be evenly distributed, the hair to retain moisture, and the waves to clump together and form! 3: For a loose wavy texture like this, I probably wouldn’t recommend a denman brush. To apply product, I’d just use your fingers to smooth, rake, and then scrunch it in. With wavy hair, brushing the product in could potentially stretch out the wave, which is why I suggest this. 4: Apply product with your head upside down or tilted to one side and then the other. This will help you achieve the root volume you were after without brushing through the hair. 5: Adding water is great, but you could probably add even more! You’ll know you have enough if the hair makes a “squishy” noise when you scrunch it and water squeezes out. 6: I’m unsure if you were doing this when diffusing, but I’ve found it helps a lot to scrunch the hair into the diffuser with it off, then turn it on when it’s in place, and then turn it off to remove it. This has really helped me with frizz and decreasing weirdly shaped curls since hair isn’t flying everywhere as I’m trying to scrunch. 7: Don’t be afraid to mess it up a little at the end! Flip your head over, get your fingers in the roots, and shake it out. I find this does wonders to create a more natural and less stiff look as well as achieve volume and break up the too-big curl clumps. Hope some of this is helpful! Of course, different things work for different people and the best thing you can do is experiment to see what works best for you. Good luck on your curly journey! It’s a fun one 💕
Yayyyy curly representation! My journey as been long and.....interesting.... lol. I can’t wait to see yours! Also be careful! You should try to avoid silicone with the curly girl method! And the ghost oil you used has silicone in it!
One thing to note is the curly hair journey is in fact a journey. There's going to be a huge learning curve and you'll need to experiment a lot to find out what's best for you. I tried out like 7 or 8 different conditioners (and that's just conditioners) until I found the one that did the most for my hair. The porosity and elasticity tests do help narrow down choices, but everyone's hair is different, so you really just have to find what works best for your hair and curl pattern. Best of luck. Always exciting seeing people start embracing their natural curls. 😍
I started watching her around 9 to and I turned 14 back in April she actually made me want to become a cosmetologist and I’m going to school for it soon.
I have 3a curls and I can’t rake or do prayer hands or it disrupts my curl pattern. When your pattern is looser, it’s usually best to avoid any combing or separating after the shower. I detangle with a comb in the shower upside down, then apply cream, mousse, and gel to wet hair, scrunch out the extra water with a microfiber towel and then diffuse upside down. It’s all about trial and error for your specific hair. It took me about a year to nail my process and get my curls exactly how I want! Good luck to all new curly girls out there!! 🌀
As someone who started her curly/wavy hair journey this year, I was very excited to see this video! congrats on beginning your journey AnnaLaura! And I think it's great Kayley that you are educating yourself where your training left gaps in curly hair knowledge. I would say one tip I have is to try brushing your hair only once - either before you shower or in the shower to detangle. I've found that for my wavier hair texture, brushing the product through my hair when damp after the shower tends to lead to looser waves (which is a beautiful look! but not always what I'm going for)
Curly hair girl here!! Soooo excited for this journey! Anna Laura your hair is gorgeous! Yesss Kayley would love to see you test your hair too! Lately I’ve been finding great result with not brushing my hair at all. Detangle it with my fingers while it’s wet in shower, then rinse it, and don’t touch it again. No brush or comb. Only gentle fingers!
This is so fun! I'm almost 2 months into my curly hair journey, and it is so easy to get completely overwhelmed with all of the information and products and styling techniques! BUT I kept watching tutorials (ManesbyMel, MsBiancaRenee, and CurlySusie are some of my faves) and slowly but surely I'm seeing real results.
Would recommend picking from below! Flip your head upside down and lift the root, that way you don't cause frizz on the surface. Also, detangling and doing all the styling in the shower maximizes the moisture! As the health of your hair improves (no heat, natural products without silicone and sulfates, deep conditioning once a week, etc), your hair pattern may change! Mine became tighter once I started taking care of mine properly. Excited to see how your hair changes in the next month. It's already so gorgeous!!
I need a type -1 style type; it doesn't feel like "1" is straight enough. What describes hair that laughs in the face of the best efforts to hold a curl? 😝
@@dashariabikhina4582 Alas, tried 'em all: mousse, sprays, textures, leave-in, rinse out. It's been a few years, so I have some new brands to try, just in case they have the miracle product, but I guess the advantage of aging is having been around a while. 😂 I have fine, thin, bone-straight hair that laughs in the face of hot tools. Quite healthy, since I rarely use heat and don't color it, but just stubbornly resists holding anything. (I guess the bonus is I never have a ponytail "cramp"?) I've only ever had one hairdresser who didn't tell me my options were perm or giving up, and I can't keep flying five states away every time I want a curl in my hair. 😉
@@khills Kayley said in a previous video that heatless curls work better on hair that doesn't want to hold a curl than using heat for the curl. This was with a octa... Something
@@khills the only thing that *sort of* works on my hair is spritz with the sea salt spray as you go.. God knows what it's doing to my hair over all (I use a heat protectant when it's damp too though), but it helps!
I'd offer constructive critique but I'm sure everything I have to say has been said in every other comment 😂 so I'll just say I genuinely thought you already knew you had curly hair 😂
I really hope you make more of these videos! I have the same hair type as AnnaLaura and I began my journey a few months back and I always love new tips! Also, I'm not sure how to find good products and gels, so could you do a video/talk on that??
All those people are not "discovering they actually had curly hair all this time". They are making their hair curly. Your hair behaves differently when you dry and treat it differently. Just because your hair gets curls when you perform a 4 step routine does not mean you have curly hair. I can get my hair to appear curly when i do certain things but when i do nothing, it is not curly and it is not "trying to be" curly. It's like saying "wow my skin is so moisturized when i apply moisturizer to it so i guess i actually don't have dry skin."
Kayley and Anna Laura- I love you guys so much!! I just started treating my hair as “curly” about a year ago and I still feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface of all the techniques and products there are popping up for curlies recently!! I would love to see in your videos a comparison of what Anna’s curls look like from different products, techniques, and orders of products, and what the pros and cons are for each! You guys are amazing and I’m so excited to follow along with this journey!!!!
@@Greentea2003 yes but waves are considered a curl pattern. waves literally have their own section in the curly girl handbook which started the curly girl method. there's no need to gatekeep curls when you clearly have no idea what you're talking about
@@nidhivaidya6485 She could've simply said waves instead of curls. I'm pretty sure alot of other people would also agree with me as well. I never said that waves werent considered a curl pattern However, there are many differences between curly and wavy hair which are visually obvious. So I see no need for u to comment stating obvious information. As someone with curly hair myself, looking up stuff about curly hair and how to help keep my curls healthy this wouldn't be any sort of help considering the fact that her hair is wavy NOT curly even if it is a curl pattern.
I have curly hair and I have found Manes By Mel to be my favorite resource. It’s more about the technique than the products. I think you did very well and Anna Laura’s hair turned out so well! One thing I would say is when you are plopping it is better to not leave it on for too long as the towel can soak up product (in my experience) I would love to see an update!
correct me if i"m wrong... but its not your natural curls when you use products like gel. Its not "i didn't know my hair was curly", its you styling your hair TO BE curly. And plopping is like a heatless curl method.
Hi, here to correct!! 😘 All the scrunching and product in the world will not make straight hair form a curl pattern! Anna Laura’s hair definitely has a natural wavy texture to it. The styling products and techniques used are to enhance that natural texture and allow it to last for multiple days without excess frizz. They also aid in detangling and protect the hair from damage or breakage, which is likelier to happen to non-straight hair as it is more vulnerable at any point where the wave/curl/coil “turns”. Also, plopping is not a heatless curling method - it only sets and enhances existing curl clumps. Hope this helps!
As an extremly curly girl, one of my tips is to brush and part your hair normally when you come out of the shower, then hang upside down and shake with your hands all of your hair loose from your roots. This gives lots of volume and keeps the part you made. While still hanging upside down, add your products and dry it. PS: my curls got a lot healthier when I washed it less then once a month. I slowly broke my washing routine down from once a week to once in six months and it has worked wonders! Just only make your hair wet once a week/2 weeks to rinse it out helps a lot with breaking your washing routine down fast.
Thank you for this. It's nice to find a "curly girl" experiment on someone with such long hair. Many curly bloggers usually only have shoulder length to shoulder blade length hair. And I second the recommendation for Swavy Curly Courtney. I've learned a lot from her for 2a/2b hair.
Its interesting watching white women gush over curly hair when we all know curly girls were terrorised for their hair in school and kept it straight within every inch of their life because leaving it in a curly state would incur mocking to the nth degree. How times change huh. Also, these are NOT curls.....these are waves.....barely.
I have to cowash and then comb, rinse, apply more conditioner with praying hands and then comb and then apply gel mixed with water and comb again all before any kind of squishing. After my hair is coated and combed it naturally starts to clump and that’s when I squish the water out. I use a T-shirt to squish once more and then defuse until 70% dry before adding more gel (mixed with water) and then I defuse some more and get an awesome cast! This didn’t work at all until I did a proteins treatment though. I’d get a cast but my curls would fall flat right away.
Kayley, I'm so happy you're doing this with AnnaLaura! I have wavy hair with a few 3A curls, and I would definitely recommend adding her products on soaking wet hair. This will minimize the frizz and add more definition, as it encourages clumping of the hair. Also, I like to stick to detangling while still in the shower but then immediately apply my styling products. I've noticed this helps ensure I have enough water in my hair for the styling process (again, to help with clumping), and I thought it might be worth it to try that on AnnaLaura's hair. It looks like you guys have a great start on this journey, though! Another youtuber you might want to check out is Swavy Curly Courtney; she makes some incredible videos on really figuring what works best for you with your hair texture and needs.
I discovered that it's crucial for me not to comb my hair after I shower. I always detangle and part my hair with a wide-tooth comb after rinsing the conditioner, do one more quick rinse with water, and DO NOT touch it with a brush or comb after that point. Once I'm drying off, I'll use a scrunching method to towel dry my hair or apply product, but if I put any tension on it the top pieces fall flat. At salons, stylists always try to comb it after washing and then diffuse the curls, but they never hold. My natural texture is somewhere between curls and waves like Anna Laura's, maybe this could work well for her! Thank you so much for the curly content!
I started doing this about a year ago. Definitely use a wide tooth comb only, in the shower. I use my favorite brush in the shower once every three washes. Use a t shirt to dry hair and plop if you go that route. Re-wetting my hair to reactivate the curl was a GAME CHANGER! Best of luck!!
I absolutely love ManesByMel! She really is a fantastic resource that helps you to build your understanding of curly hair in general. Another things that might help is to do finger coiling (Mel has a video about it). It’s a useful technique for restarting curls when you are transitioning your hair (it helps the curls to understand how to curl when they have been straitened a lot).
I’m so proud that stylists are starting to learn about how to style curly hair. Every time I go to get my hair bleached or cut my hair dresser blow drys then straightens my hair because she doesn’t know how to style my hair without frizz. You should be learning how to take care of your hair the best from your hair stylist and I don’t get that from mine
Thank you for trying to learn more about curly hair 💓 I have been following you for YEARS and as a curly girl myself I get really excited when you post anything curly related.
So for my curly hair I use a wide tooth comb when detangling my hair. I learned that when using the paddle brush you comb out the curls. I also detangle my hair when I’m in the shower. Once I get out of the shower I add in my leave in cream. I’ve noticed that best leave-in cream is she’s moisture. The Jamaican black Castor oil strengthen and restore leave in condition. Then I diffuse my hair.
Hi there. I started my curly hair journey about 6 months ago. My hair type is a 2b-2c type wave. I just want to say that when you style wavy hair, make sure to not brush it out. In my experience it tends to drag out any definition that we can get. Instead of brushing the hair out when you are styling, glaze the product over the hair and then scrunch it in. This will make sure that the hair is covered sufficiently with product, but it is not dragging out the curl pattern too much. Also make sure the products are very lightweight and not to use too much (it will weigh your hair down). I love youtubers like ManesByMell and BiancaReneeToday, but certain products and styling techniques don't work very well for wavy hair. But it works very well for them due to the fact that their hairtype is way more curly. When I figured this out, my hair looked fantastic. I hope this helps! I love you guys a lot and I hope that you guys post some curly hair tutorials!
I’ve been on my curly journey for 5 years, and I’m 17, but I’ve used our time in quarantine to learn new techniques and try new products since I needed to move away from DevaCurl. I use a conditioner with A LOT of slip and detangle my hair in the shower, starting with my fingers, then i flip my head upside down and use my Perfect Hair Care brush to help create my clumps. after that I add a little more water and rinse a little of the conditioner, then “squish to condish” or scrunch my curl clumps in the shower to help the curl start forming. I also have more type 2 curls, and I usually skip the curl cream and go straight to gel because I leave in my conditioner and find that curl creams tend to weigh down my curls. I also try to avoid brushing my hair once I’m out of the shower, however I have not tried a Denman brush on my hair so it may have good results on wavy-curly hair. I also love watching Swavy Curly Courtney because she has more type 2 wavy curls and her tips tend to work better in my hair than curls for people with tighter patterns! I’m so happy y’all made this video and curly hair is becoming more popular!! Thank you guys!!
I recently started down this curly girl path... since we don’t ever leave home these day. Lol. Some things I have learned: squish to consist definitely helps with forming curl clumps; curl clumps are a thing and putting all products on super wet hair helps form them; switch between deep conditioning and a protein treatment on wash days. Yay! Good luck!!
@@madame33licious i'm super jealous of your daughter's hair 🥺
@@madame33licious i feel this so bad😢
Scrunch the products in rather than brush! Using a wide tooth comb is also way better, even when wet. A paddle brush will flatten the curl pattern
I use a wetbrush to align my curls then scrunch product in
A Denman brush works really well, but the paddle brush is probably too much.
Lisa R I’ve never tried one of those before!
Maybe I better test my texture then. I always have fluffy, frizzy hair, no matter how a stylist tries to cut it.
Omg my life!
I think every curly head has been personally victimized by a stylist with good intentions 😆
I personally have the best success combing my hair in the shower and not putting any kind of brush or comb through it once I'm out
Same!! Except my hair is very fine so when I do it in the shower, it dries frizzy! I like to brush my hair before I shower when my hair is dry, then go in with all my treatments and stylers!
I think every curly girls method is so unique. You just have to find what works for your own!
Same here. I have noticed this has helped me
@@ha11ejo3L073 I also have fine hair. Mine is baby fine. I have noticed that I use curl creme and it has helped a ton with the frizz.
That’s my hair type too!! Do you have any recommendations for hair products to use? Currently using a mousse and trying Briogeo curl defining cream.
I also have 2b/2c (sometimes I get a few random 3a) and I still compare it to others because I the type 3 hair.
I like Aussies curl mousse/leave in conditioner product. Wavy 2b/2c
Squish to condish. When in the shower scrunch in your conditioner.
Ooh that reminds me that you might also enjoy Joslyn Davis' curly hair journey. ☺
That makes my hair super frizzy! It’s best to massage the conditioner in and then squish the hair while styling.
And then rinse out normally? Or scrunch while rinsing out?
@@SuperRoo91 rinse normally!
Don’t rinse it out!!
Keep in mind that "curly hair" is a big spectrum and what works for the very curly girls doesn't necessarily work on wavier hair.
just to compare, i have really loose waves (like, barely 2a at times) so for me, scrunching dry is what give the most definition.
Hair should be “squishy” when adding product. Her hair is way to dry.
Yes, this! It should feel like wet seaweed.
YES!!!!
Should I not towel dry my hair at all? Like...sopping wet pretty much? Like an unwringed mop?
I use a t-shirt. Wrap your hair up just like you would a towel, but do it with a t- shirt. Hope this helped!
DO NOT USE DIVA CURL PRODUCTS from a curly girl who's hair was murdered by Diva Curl.
Yes!!! Overpriced and not as good as people think. x
I dont think she was saying to use them. Just that there was a seminar that she had to go to for work/school by them.
We have the same curl type, 2b/2c
I have helped dozens of friends go curly!
Penny tovar and India batson were what got me into curly hair styling. With our curl type, follow India's sitting rule of no brushing.
Plopping can work, but I find i don't like it with my hair type.
Try these products:
-Love Beauty and planets salt spray
-Not your mother's curl talk line (any of these products!)
-Cantu curl activator cream
-Shea moisture yogurt leave in conditioner and protein treatment
Those have worked for me. Some of them even give me ringlets!
Good luck and have fun!:-)
Same here! I haven't tried those products, thanks for the recommendations!
Really surprised she didn’t use Shea Moisture, considering she did that commercial for them a few years ago. 😳
I can attest, I've been using a cotton t-shirt instead of a towel on my hair after I shower for years and it is fantastic!
That is one of the best thing that happen to me : to finally understand that my hair is curly and not just a mess that I can't handle
PS : I love your videos and that is the first time in the 6 years that I follow you that I post a comment !
I second Swavy Curly Courtney. Her videos are great, and her wavy/curly hair is closer, so that's always helpful! (That said, Mell is fantastic.)
Yes! I was going to say this too. Check out those wavy hair UA-camrs. The super curly girls aren't going to be quite as helpful for your (and my) hair type.
Yes Swavy Curly Courtney is an excellent resource if you’re new to the Curly Girl Method.
I detangle in the shower, ALWAYS.
Yes best way to do it
Yes and while you have conditioner still in!
Same! WITH conditioner in! I would never touch a brush to my hair without conditioner in. Frizz CITY!
Yess!! Conditioner in! Very important!
Yes! I have a wide tooth comb that hangs in my shower and I put conditioner in, detangle and leave it for a few minutes. This has been a game changer! My hair is way less frizzy and way less tangled when I get done.
I really wanna see Kayley do the curly girl method now to see how her hair turns out

Same!!
Yes, please! I've been trying out a few things, but I need more info. I have long hair and it always weights down the wave on the top of my head.
@@KristianaGrigorova If you want a few tips, I also have long wavy hair:
A Denman brush really helps defining the hair closer to my scalp, there are a lot of videos on using that (Manes by Mell has a few!) and I take smaller sections on the top of my head so my top layer is a little lighter than the rest and they hold their curl better.
During all the video I was like "WATER, we need more WATER"

ItzBreanna! Mine started at 2b and is now 3a/b. (One year later) I had a lot of heat damage (6/7 years) and didn’t cut it all off. You might even have curlier hair. I wish you luck continuing!
Alexia Luna me too! I have lots of heat damage from dying my hair over several years and straightening
Hey Kayley and AnnaLaura try out not your mother's curl talk line there afforable and great and Bianca Renee another curl influencer also suggest Curlsmith.
I agree! I've been using the curl creme and it is amazing!
I mean the Not Your Mothers Curl Talk
Yeaaaasss! Curl Talk is the best!
Oh my gosh yess!! I just started using it and it’s amazing!! Love it
LOVE!!!
Check out India Batson although Anna Laura’s hair is longer she would find her videos helpful since it’s around the same 2c-3a
YOU NEED SO MUCH MORE WATER!!!!!
3. And yeah, as everyone said YOU NEED WAY MORE WATER 🤣
4. Experiment with the plop - my hair hates plopping for any longer than 2 mins lol the longer i wear it the less volume and definition i get. My hair prefers a wet plop 🙂
5. Doooont touch your hair while drying it 🤣
I love Swavy Curly Courtney. She's the best. I've been learning a lot from her while in quarantine
Anyone else a curly head who loves watching other people discover that they have waves/curls?
I'm a newly discovered wavy! I love watching the reactions other people are having finding out they are wavy or curly! I remember the first time my hair was wavy after a haircut, and I was so thrilled that it had wave. My whole life I thought my hair was stick straight, and it turns out I was sooooooo wrong.
@@TriciaBarnes28 so cutee, I'm glad you like your hair and embrace the texture💕
@@corina.grindeanu thank you! My mother has curly, probably 3B hair, and I was always jealous. But now I'm researching the best ways to keep my waves heathy... yes I know having it died blue doesnt help... lol! But its so much prettier now than it was before.
@Saanthwana lol, I was brushing my hair hoping it will stay straight but it was 10 times worse😂😭 Glad I actually learnt what to do
Yeeees😍😍😍
To help with detangling brush your conditioner through in the shower it helps so much
I scrunch out the crunch gently with a cotton towel or tshirt after it's fully dry whether it be air drying or diffusing.
:)
We need a Manes by Mell/Kayley Melissa collab when covid is over!!
Always detangle in the shower, always scrunch shampoo and conditioner upside down in the shower for more volume, always section when putting product in the hair after a wash, always move the curls (carefully) in different directions to confuse the root (again, more volume), and every once in a while if the hair is lacking moisture, treat it with a hair mask to reset the curls and give them a breath of fresh air 😊
- From a curly girl (3a-3b) ❤️
I already loved the salon I went to, but when all of the stylists were required to do curly hair training I knew I'd never leave them. It's so refreshing when salons keep their stylists educated on how to style all kinds of hair! So it's nice to see influencers doing the same to make us curly haired gals feel included 😊
Manes by Mell is one of my favorite channels! I’m so glad you talked about her! She’s so educational, but so entertaining!
I love watching swavy wavy Courtney she helps so much!!! The weter the hair when styling the better!
As a curly girl, I truly appreciate you learning how to style ALL types of hair!!!!!
Me and my pin straight hair sitting here absolutely fascinated
If you did all this shit to your pin straight hair it would be "Curly" too.
Me too!
Saame
My hair is straight too but I thought about trying this because I was wondering if it is possible to get a curl even though it usually is straight.
Look at Isabella Demarko’s channel. You might really benefit from her hair journey
I loveeee her!
💛💛💛💛
Those are waves
You two are definetely the friendliest, kindest people on UA-cam! I feel like you are my sisters 🤗 Thank you so much for all of your videos and kindness! ♥️ And Anna Laura's hair looks unbelievable! 😍
That was such a big sister moment when kayley said “what are you doing?!” When Anna Laura was just gawking into the wine glass
That's why I was so hesitant to try the denman brush
I find it's fine as long as you're brushing when it's really soaking wet and not just damp
U taught me to Dutch braid and I’m really good now
I have always thought I had wavy hair until I started trying the curl girl method. After only two weeks I already have more definition but after those two weeks I was not totally sold on the method and started watching a few of Mel’s videos. Through some trial and error I think I actually have 3a or 3b curls! Cheers to all the other curly girls out there who are also working on their curl journey! ❤️
For specifically waves, curly Swavy Courtney shares so many tips in a perfect amount of time.
I really hope you do more curly content going forward!!!
who else loves kayleys vids? ❤️
I love her video ♥︎:)
You guys did such a great job for the first time and got beautiful results! I’m so excited to see how the journey goes. Here’s what alterations to the routine I would suggest based on what I’ve learned from my time in the curly hair community:
1: I would detangle in the shower with conditioner and either a wide tooth comb or just your fingers.
Hey kayley!I used to watch u when i was like 9 and now im like 14 and ur still super duper awesome!!!!
aww, that’s sweet. I’ve been watching for like eight years. She’s been here for awhile!
Sierra Schultzzie made some great videos about her curly hair journey over the course of a few months.
I've found that for my wavier hair texture, brushing the product through my hair when damp after the shower tends to lead to looser waves (which is a beautiful look! but not always what I'm going for)
once you want to wear your hair curly, your world literally turns upside down :)
Can we see a pick of Anna Laura in middle school??? I wanna see how her hair was back the !!
You can not FORCE curling
I usually just call it, “mine.”
Kelly Hills same, I’ve tried so many tricks and my hair just doesn’t curl. At this point tho I’m ok with it, I’ve learned to like straight hair haha
I comb my hair in the shower, then add whatever after I get out and plop; any brushing/combing after it's dry takes out all the wave/curl though.
Her hair is wavy not curly
I agree
waves are a curl pattern
@@nidhivaidya6485 there's an obvious visual difference between having wavy hair and having curly hair
Just only make your hair wet once a week/2 weeks to rinse it out helps a lot with breaking your washing routine down fast.
you don’t have curly hair, you have wavy hair 💀💀
I looked and looked for this comment.
Right... wavy hair v different from curly hair
Do you have direct evidence that these women terrorized curly haired girls in school? Stop projecting.
@@Kay-cp8tg do you have evidence that this didn't happen? No? Then be quiet.
@@stephpowell7648 idk it seems like you hate these girls and you don’t even know them. I would suggest therapy.
Yay! Good luck!!
