*Warning* I get rather sassy in this video...more than I normally do. Please see my heart in this. I am not claiming to be something I am not. I make it very clear on this channel that I consider my hair 2a, 2b, 2c hair. This is considered wavy. This video is meant to encourage people to embrace the hair that they are born with!

Oh, yeah! Thanks for approaching this thorny subject! You have always been sincere and transparent and it's great!
I am tired of feeling such a fake because my hair is a little frizzy and mostly straight when I don't style it, but then it's wavy and even curly when styled CG. I always feel I should confess to those that appreciate and compliment my hair and tell them that it's just styling. And when a man likes my hair, well... You can imagine the conflict inside me...

@@_m.h partially agree with diffusing, but not w scrunching. if you have straight hair, scrunching it isn’t gonna all of the sudden make it wavy. you can’t create texture with your bare hands-if you could then there would barely be a market for heat styling tools!! if someone has hair that appears straight and frizzy when brushed, but when they scrunch it they get defined waves/curls, then their hair is wavy/curly. because the fact of the matter is, you can’t treat wavy hair like it’s straight, or it’ll be a mess. curly and wavy hair have different needs, but they’re more similar to each other than either are to straight hair.

Then I discovered the curly girl method and oh my God, it blew my mind when the hairdresser told me I had curls...

From seeing the comments I feel that this needs to be said. The curly girl movement has a lot of crossover with the natural hair movement which is created for black girls with kinky curly hair to embrace their natural hair texture. Because, in case you didn’t know, for like ever black women have been told that their natural textured hair is inappropriate or unprofessional which leads to real life workplace discrimination. But I also think that a lot of white women feel that if their hair isn’t bone-straight, they are less attractive because for whatever weird reason a lot of men don’t like curly hair. Which is stupid but that’s another conversation. But at the end of the day we’re all being faced with exclusionary beauty standards and that actually leads us to destroying our hair trying to be someone else that we’re not. So at the day I think we all just need to have a little more empathy for all people all races but also recognize how different our experiences can be. Peace and love. Love you Courtney.

Pre-CGM, when I would see friends the day I washed my hair, they would often ask if I curled it. Then, the next morning after brushing it (because I was taught to always brush my hair), it would just be wavy. As a once a week washer, my hair would just keep getting flatter from sleeping on it and brushing it until I washed it again (as evidenced in profile pic). But it was still never straight (except the occasional times I spent an hour blow drying to mostly dry on med/low temp with a brush, and then another half hour/hour with a straightener). My impression is that people compare to their own hair, so people with straight hair see the curliness in wavies, and people with curlier hair just see it as straight or maybe wavy, because it doesn't match how they define curly. Just my two cents, but it's not a competition to see who can be the curliest, right? We should learn to enjoy our own hair and appreciate the beauty in the variety of others' hair. *shrug* Also, I like the sass, Courtney. :-)

I was raised by a straight haired mama with no clue what my hair was (aside from "unmanageable") lol
I started CGM and found your channel earlier this year and knew my hair was wavy. When I got the last of the chemical damage cur off earlier this month, the stylist said it was not wavy... it's CURLY. I still call it wavy to avoid issues with folks, but there are spirals in there. And my hair is curly while wet for sure. It's limp by day 2 or 3, but as soon as water hits it, it bounces up again. It's a strange creature lol. If I had social media, I'd share. Our hair is a lot alike :) You really need helped my hair get better and give me a ton of confidence.

I’m new to the wavy/curly community (menopause changed my super straight hair) and saddened that there are people out there that are curl snobs. My hair is very much like Courtney’s, except shorter, and I can go back and forth from wavy/curly to straight depending on my mood. Courtney, your hair is gorgeous either way.

I mean I get what they're saying, I have true CURLY hair, I don't have to do anything to it to make it curly, and yes it's curly even when wet. But, just because my hair is naturally curlier than someone with wavy hair who trains it to be curly, I don't have a problem with anyone calling their hair curly, when it IS curly as the end result of their styling. Some people really can't make their hair curly without a curling iron. THAT'S not curly hair. But if you can scrunch it a little with a little product and the end result is curls, then you can call your hair curly. Doesn't matter if it's not quite as naturally curly as mine. I think some people are just curl snobs lol. Btw Courtney, your hair is beautiful, and it definitely isn't straight

the gatekeeping of curly hair is what made me wait so long to start trying to take car of my 2B-2C hair. While we're at it I have the same issue with being midsize as well. Skinny people think I'm plus size, plus size people think I'm skinny. Straight hair girlies think I have curly hair, curly hair girlies think I have straight hair. Tired of the obsession with other people's bodies, I'm just trying to do the best I can for myself lmao.

This definitely needed to be said. I just recently joined a curly/wavy hair care group on fb and a lot of the women in there are downright rude and disrespectful to each other and it’s really horrible to watch these women being so catty and tearing each other down. When I first joined I was singled out by some of them and told my hair isn’t really wavy because I don’t have a crazy amount of waves/definition, but my hair is definitely not 100% straight. My hair has bends throughout and when I add product and scrunch I can actually get a lot more wave definition and even spirals in places, and it’s very frizzy and slightly coarse and gets dry easily if I don’t take proper care of it. One woman even went as far to tell me that I needed to stay my a** out of the textured hair care aisle when I posted what products I had been using on my hair recently after I had followed some of your tutorials and bought some As I Am Cowash and Carol’s Daughter Moisture and Shine Shampoo because I had been dealing with super dry hair and nothing else I’d been trying had really helped and my hair started acting better after using those products. I’m so confused because I actually went to cosmetology school for 5 months and from what I learned while attending, wavy hair is a type of textured hair and I don’t think there should be this big of a divide over who uses what types of hair care products as there are much bigger things in life we should be worrying about

But the minute she started talking about the baby hairs that curl like a sprig in the summer in the slightest humidity "I said OMG yeah that's my hair"... I guess I shouldn't be surprised I had ringlets as a kid. Whenever I get those curls it's right on my hair line on the back of my next. And everytime my mom sees it she literally starts playing with it and is like "aw look look at that curl!" All excited like and I legit want nothing more then them to go away lol

I look at my hair as "Versatile." Its very similar to yours but slightly wavier with some twisty curls here and there. I'm happy I can wear it for a straight look (how I used to look before menopause changed my hair!!) to scrunching my wave, and adding products for a curlier look..As my husband said- I have the best of both worlds. And I do wear it straight-er 2 to 3 times a week and let it go more textured and wavy the other days. I'm ok with it, too.

I range from 2c to 3b curls. When my hair is wet and I brush it, it’s dead straight. Being indian straight hair has always been desirable and the standard for beautiful hair. It took me a long time to embrace my hair and now that I have I don’t need people telling me what my hair is or isn’t.
My hair depends on how I style it, it can be very curly, or if I want waves I just brush it when it’s wet. No two days are the same. My hair is easily manipulated. And I love it ❤️

I consider my hair to be wavy, it's actually very similar texture and weight to Courtney's so I'm so glad I found this channel. My son has adorable curls and no one would argue that his hair is curly - but when wet it's straight. I know other super curly haired people - we're talking Merida in brave level curly - whose hair is straight when it's washed and combed. Who cares! I agree 💯 with Courtney, the method is about loving the hair you are in!

I get a feeling there is a lot of hurt behind the “curly or not curly” discussion. I wonder if this would even be a topic of interest in an alternate reality, where people are just people and hair is just hair.
I might be wrong though, since type 4 hair seems to be sometimes frowned upon and called “the bad hair” in the natural hair community. Or maybe that is the other side of the same hurt.
In reality all hair texture is beautiful. Type 3 hair is gorgeous and types 1, 2 and 4 are too! They all deserve being pampered with healthy products and worn as the crowns they are! 👑 👑👑

Seeing you with your hair at 7:37 was really encouraging to me. I had much curlier locks when I was young, but as time went on and I straightened my hair for years and years (due to the uncontrollable frizz and inability to just leave my house without doing something to my hair, as you expressed), it's been discouraging to try to embrace the hair I was born with and wondering if I can make anything good of the waves I have now. And seeing your hair that way and especially the way you talk about how CGM is about embracing the health of one's hair, it helps me feel a bit better about not straightening my hair anymore. Thank you so much for your videos.

I have very unruly hair when mine dries on its own with no product in it (straight pieces, bent pieces, frizz galore). Since following the CGM as closely as possible, and laying off of the blow dryer and flat iron, I think my hair has gotten healthier. Styling products have definitely helped with bringing out waves/curls. It’s like you said - it’s about embracing what you have and learning about what works best for you.

Thank you for this. I understand that there are unique challenges for curly, kinky, and coily hair that wavies do not face. My hair was truly straight until middle school (all I had to do was brush it out in the mornings). Then I suddenly had to use a straightener to get the same result. It took years to cross my mind that there was a shift in the actual texture of my hair. Call it wavy or call it curly, there is texture to my hair (and I'm convinced that many more have texture than they've ever realized). The Curly Girl Method opened the door to possibilities for me in embracing the hair that God gave me. While I don't follow it strictly, the journey has been so freeing to me! Thanks, Courtney, for the helpful and encouraging videos. I love seeing a wavy represent well in this community!

I wore my hair straight all my life, I always had some dodgy waves at the back, that I took care about with a straightener or round brush and heat. I had a pixie cut for years when covid happened and because I couldn't cut it monthly like usual I let it grow. To my surprise it came out more wavy than before, I was introduced to cgm and it worked! I have 2a with a few 2b pieces. I get better and better results as time goes by.
Everyone around me questioned my wavy hair, I got all kind of comments, I started questioning if it was really wavy or I am forcing it to be that way with the help of the styling methods I use. I've reached a point where I don't care anymore and I love the fact that I can wear it wavy or straight with minimum damage.

I have been watching your videos for a little while now because I have wavy hair with large ringlets with very dry frizzy hair and scalp. I started doing the curly girl method using grocery store products from which people using the curly girl method recommended with good results but I and my husband cannot handle the perfumes. I recently purchased Jessicurl products 2oz products worth about $35.00. When the products arrived it had lots of samples included. My hair started doing quite well with the itchy scalp going away. I had a stroke in 2018 at 63 years old. A year later I noticed my curly dry hair. My stylist recommended not using a brush nor a comb. I was appalled not knowing what she was advising. I began researching how to handle curly hair this year in desperation. After several different stylist I found one that understand curly hair. She said my hair was medium thickness (with some gray course thrown in) wavy, curly hair. My scalp and hair thank you for the quality information. You are a blessing!!

So, I think you're the perfect person to learn tips from because I know if they work for you then they will absolutely work for me in most cases and with less effort. I'm really thankful for your channel. I could never do as much as you do. Lol sweetie our hair is curly without products . We still have ringlets & they are very visible . Product just simply enhances our curls . We don’t have to scrunch & be extra unless we choose . Type 3 to type 4 hair are true curly hair . If you have wavy hair & allow it to air dry without product , if it doesn’t curl you don’t have curls . Of course you can make ringlets with products , scrunching and techniques but it’s not natural .

Taylor Lee wait I’m confused, so since you say these “fake” curly/wavy girls only have curl or wave pattern bc of products, that would mean that they according to you have straight hair naturally? But then how come ppl with ACTUALLY straight hair can’t make their hair curly by scrunching or using products? Would you explain why not all ppl with straight hair can’t seem to get ringlets by scrunching? Products are meant to enhance curls and waves, it can’t create something that isn’t there to start with. Curls are a spectrum. A 4b curl is gonna look tighter and neater with products and looser without products. Same thing with a 2a wave and since a 2a wave already is looser and closer to straight hair than 4b it’s gonna look straighter without products. It doesn’t mean the hair is straight or a curl pattern doesn’t exist.

    • @Fdbfjfkfidkdbdbdks

Taylor Lee also you can’t compare a perm with using the curly method. A perm chemically changes your hair texture permanently by damaging the hair follicles that’s why it’s straight. The curly girl method is a CARING treatment meant to boost the hair quality and make it healthier and go back to its natural state..

Johanna E nobody said you couldn’t use the curly girl method . The method can be used on any hair type . I’m saying you can’t claim to have curly hair when your hair naturally isn’t curly without any product or techniques .

I think it looks nice! Mine has straight and wavy pieces and is a straight dried out puffball for an entire day after washing unless it’s oiled. I’m completely heat and chemical free too have been for years. At least yours doesn’t look dry, in fact it looks soft and glossy! 😊

When I was a kid, my mom used to constantly tell me to brush my hair or that I hadn't brushed it well enough because my hair looked "ratty". It took a hairdresser to tell her that my hair is not ratty, it's wavy, and then they started with teaching me to not air dry my hair and how to straighten it or use a curling iron (which I still to this day suck at doing) because if I didn't my hair would be "ugly". A decade later and now I really want to see if this will work for me.

Just this week I decided my wavy hair is DONE with CGM. My hair loves the "good" sulfates and not piling on a ton of layers of products. I've spent well over a grand in products in the one year I've subscribed to the method...all based on a book written by one woman with one hair type. I dug out a year old bottle of Aveda Brilliant and used the Curlsmith in shower styler or the Ouidad climate control gel and my wavy has popped to curly like never before. My scalp is clean, my hair is shiny and I've never been more happy with it. I've also tried drying without a diffuser (from a distance) and my results were just the best ever! I think sulfates are only bad if you don't get regular trims or color your hair. My hair is healthy, I get regular trims from a level three Deva stylist and boom. It's popping. This week has been my wavy to curly bouncing hair epiphany! BTW love all my You Tube curly channels you and Manes by Mel are my mainstays and will still watch but no more sinking money into tons of products for the "method".

my hair loves sulfates too! It's just greasy and gross if I don't use sulfates.

OMG! My hair is exactly like yours. I didn't realize until seeing this video that I too am a "curly girl".
I stumbled on your video somehow and never knew about the curly girl method until now (and I'm in my fifties). The years I wasted, feeling bad and being shamed if I didn't "style"--aka torture--my hair... I stopped blow drying my hair a decade ago but occasionally would curl it to "style" it. Most days, I would end up with had beachy waves but after sleeping on it, frizz and kinks. I have long been "curl-curious" and spent countless hours in the haircare isle wondering if a curl definer would help, but the way the products are organized and the names of the products led me to believe they weren't for me. (I have your skin, hair, and eye color). So, I didn't realize I could enhance my wavy hair in such a way that I could achieve better hair health and a more reliable outcome.
I'm now binge watching all your videos intent on embarking on a curly girl journey of my own. Thank you!

THANK YOUUUUU. Someone who used to be in my life is barely 3a, and she says I have straight hair, and that if you can’t count ringlets when it’s wet it’s not curly.😩

I never straightened my hair but it was always overly voluminous and annoying. Finding the curly girl method and adjusting to my preferences has been a lot of fun and I never thought my hair could have as much texture as I can get now - and it hasn't even been 2 months of experimenting with it! Your videos have been so helpful and fun!

This video inspired me to give my day 5 stretched out and super dry curls/waves some love! After a couple of disappointing wash days in a row recently I'd honestly fallen out of love with my curl pattern and been throwing it up in a bun and neglecting it more often than not. I've been wearing my natural hair since Feb so the honeymoon period is well and truly over haha. This served as a perfect reminder to not compare my curls to anyone elses (even my own on a "better" day) and just put the love and care into my hair because it's what it and I deserve to be healthy and happy

I was just trying to explain this curly hair competition between us wavy/curly haired ladies, to my husband. I really appreciate that you covered this subject! It’s frustrating to have to feel like you’re a liar if ALL of your hair isn’t ringlets 24/7. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you!

I know just about everybody says this, and I've said it before on your videos as well, but you have such a charming and genuine presence in your videos. Would be an absolute treat to know you in real life as a friend/coworker/cousin/sister, whatever!
Keep advocating for women to embrace their "fearfully and wonderfully made" selves, regardless of the frizzy kinks, curls, or pin-straight strands of protein-filaments that grow out of their scalps :)

thank you! more people need to know this! my hair is very long and fine so if I don't help my curls out they're weighed down and almost completely flat. Sometimes I wish I had the coils and definition of other girls, but I'm slowly learning to appreciate my own hair

Yup my hair pretty much looks exactly like yours when air dried but if I sleep on it it is even weirder and flatter! This is encouraging!!

Great video!!!! All this needed to be said! I feel very lucky to have wavy hair. It looks like I've used a curling iron to make waves on purpose when I do my routine right! My hair is much healthier and less frizzy following the CG method. I've never been happier with my hair in my whole life ❤

It’s not a contest like 4 vs. 2. And it’s not a score. All textured hair is beautiful. Thank you, Courtney, for making the CGM approachable! I’ve learned so much from you, the most important lesson being that accepting and caring for my curls is about more than just hair. It’s about self-acceptance. There’s no gatekeeper for that.

My air dried hair looks just like yours, but with a little product I get perfect 3a curls. It'll brush straight in the shower, but I feel like that's just because it's fine and easy to pull straight. The tiniest hint of encouragement makes it ringlet up, which is good enough for me. I found the curly girl method two months ago, and on the first wash day I learned I had ringlets!
