I was born and grew up in Bar Harbor. For some reason the sound of a Harley on a hot summers night while going to sleep always made me smile with envy. 63 now and live in the country. I don't hear the shovel much anymore but when I do I feel alive.
I remember quote I read in a motorcycle magazine years ago........."One sounds really good, two together sound superb, and three sound like the arrival of Armaggendon.". Owned a 77 FLH for 20 years. Loved that stump pulling torque! Life took over and I said goodbye to biking until 2004 When I bought a new FLHT Twin Cam. Still have and it’s been a great bike. Due to health I haven’t ridden in a year and a half , but hope to this spring. As nice as it is I still miss the feeling of hitting a hill in 4th and just feeling the hand of God push me up the hill.
I went through a rough time with my health, physically and mentally many years ago. I willed myself to deal with the pain and get back on 2 wheels again. Eventually I could ride for several hours through the mountains near my home in Australia. I credit the riding with my recovery both mentally and physically. Hi from Washington! Often get told my Shovelhead sounds better then the Evo's or newer Harley Davidson motors. I believe it is because of points ignition, Solid lifters , old Sifton 440T cam.
Always liked the shovel head sound from a Harley. Growing up around engines, old bikes of various makes and tractor's my ears are tuned to a certain sound.
That's a tough one - both of my bikes have that HD potato, potato sound. 81 Ironhead, and a 2001 Evolution and I like the way both of them sound. Awesome post!
My dad had a 67 shovelhead, purple, green, blue metallic chameleon paint job with ghost flames. Not sure what if anything was tuned on it, but I remember if he'd get on it, it would shoot some small flames out the exhaust. When he took it to Harley Davidson back in 2017 they just died to have it, and he went for it. Walked out with a brand new Harley with 0 miles and paid $250 cash. No payments just about an even trade. He's at the end of his riding days though, laid it down twice, second time didn't have the strength to get it off him and the exhaust sat on and burnt his leg until someone pulled over to help. He's 68 now he says his body just ain't what it used to be. He fixed the bike both times and no insurance since it was just him involved, so he's going to hand it down to me. 2017 with 187 miles, no dents or scratches, told him he should've kept the shovelhead to hand down to me. Lol.

Im partial to my 1940 UL Flathead motor, which for comparison can be heard at my channel, Slickhead Custom Cycles on UA-cam. I also enjoy my ironheads. Im working on buying me a shovel
I don’t know! Yesterday I was out cycling and pulled up next to an old BMW airhead that was made into a bobber and it sounded pretty darn cool! And looked freaking awesome!
The loudest exhaust ever is an early shovelhead with the large kidney type bottom end, 1966-1969, 74 cubic inch(1200cc) bored out to 80 cubic inch(1340cc) with straight shorty shotgun pipes. It has a low pitch throaty sound.
Love that sporties are back in. It is a great pure motorcycle and sound .. also more affordable but I’m sure with popularity that will unfortunately change
I can never hear that sweet loping sound at idle & not think of Van Halen's Hot For Teacher! It really makes me curious to see an overlaid animation of the engine to see why it has such h a unique sound.
I thought I would scan through the comments to see if anyone mentioned that song and here it is. There's a drummer that does a good cover of it here on you tube.

They sound great just add a trailer hitch to haul the tools you need if you go more than 50 miles from home because that is the reason for the evo engine.
I heard that myself, I also heard something extra sounding on the 2nd bike with all the chrome , but it's hard to tell unless you can put a screwdriver against the block or push rod tubes, to really know
@@joshuaatkins5197 right, maybe even better. (I knew a knuckle head owner/rider carried a piece like that around with him) . I seen a old iron head rider use a piece of bamboo too (a back scratcher thing) but I can't vouch for that one , personally, ha!

I suppose the Shovelheads are kind of a compromise of the two in a way, they do need looking after and know how but they have decent pulling power and they look and sound great..
At least to my ears, the shovel has the best sound of any H-D powerplant. The machine with the green & flames paint had just the right tone for me...
I'd agree.
That romping Shovel, slow rolling canter is a perfect Harley Iron horse sound.
Next would be the Evo, Potato Potato Potato tune they put out.
Sold my 81 Wideglide to restore my 49 Panhead.
Wouldn't trade the Pan but sure do REALLY miss my Shovel. 😪
I'm
main reason been looking to get a Harley for that sound hoping to get one before the summer time to ride with you
where i live you dont see many shovelheads around when i take mine to a show i got guys tracking me down to see the bike just because they heard me driving threw the crowd in a sea of new bikes it draws the attention
Best UA-cam video ever! No talking just shovel
It's one of the reasons I love Shovels. I love ALL of them!! If I had to choose one? The first bike because it's old school including the shotgun drags. I just love the shit out of shot gun pipes, man!! And the note coming out of them. Mmmm Mm!!
The idle is so low /slow ......I love it!!
Starves the engine of proper oil pressure.
Kills bottom end bearings
Now I miss my 81 FXWG more than ever. Rode it for 17 years. I don't know why I sold it. I've had my twin cam FXWG for 24 years but, it ain't the same.
Holy POTATOES!! Great video! I have owned two Shovels and yeah, they have the best sound. I still own my 92 Softail and I believe that the Evo is last great sounding engine that Harley ever made.
Always be a fan of the show and shovelhead and the Flathead❤ have a great week bro
Had a 47 FL Knucklehead 80" with a cam that was a very nice idol, that shovel is sweet
Im partial to my 1940 UL Flathead motor, which for comparison can be heard at my channel, Slickhead Custom Cycles on UA-cam. I also enjoy my ironheads. Im working on buying me a shovel
IRONHEADS FKN RULE!!!
🤘😎🤘
They are Iconic. I love these old bikes .They are hard to come by up here in Canada.
All unique, all sound great. Hope you neighbors are understanding. 👍👍
I owned a 1978 FLH for over 25 years. Truly nothing sounds like a shovel.
Definitely the best sounding Harley. Best looking also. I own 2 shovels. They can keep the EVO’s and twin cams.
They need work often but they sound so good!
Bro.. I love.. LOVE the sound of my S&S 80 Evo, but these shovelheads are just gritty and mean.
I just wanted to say that you guys make some. Good looking pieces of machinery and to keep up the great work
I have a single ignition ironhead, super e that juest purrs but myself....damn i love that old panhead sound the most. Most likely cause it was what i first heard, fell in love withso many years ago> I have had 8 Harleys.Bought an evo springer brand new....traded it for a panhead 10 months later.
I always loved the sound of my 51 pan when it would kick over and I would advance the distributor and the idle would smooth out and be ready to roar .
"What's your favorite motor sound?"
Yes
(: Always a pleasure gents. Great work Son.
Music to my Ears ! There’s nothing better than the sound of a well tuned Shovelhead just put put putting away at a low idle !
Dlaczego sie nie nauczą odpalać lewą nogą?? Wszak sto lat już minęło a oni nic.
Widocznie motocykliści to mało pojętny narodek.
They sound great just add a trailer hitch to haul the tools you need if you go more than 50 miles from home because that is the reason for the evo engine.
That gold tank bob is awesome
I totally agree... all Harleys from flathead to twin cams sound good but a shovel is unique....
I have always thought the shovel sounded the best! Only kind of Harley I have ever owned because of that!
I love a shovel. Specifically, a '78 lowrider, with a 56 wide-glide front end!
2:02 hey is the intro to hot for teacher
The one from 3:05 to 4:30 ish has a very unusual sound. Very nice. Sound like it has lots of snort.🍻
I heard that myself, I also heard something extra sounding on the 2nd bike with all the chrome , but it's hard to tell unless you can put a screwdriver against the block or push rod tubes, to really know
@@klaytonvonkluge4905 wood dowel works too
@@joshuaatkins5197 right, maybe even better.
(I knew a knuckle head owner/rider carried a piece like that around with him) .
I seen a old iron head rider use a piece of bamboo too (a back scratcher thing) but I can't vouch for that one , personally, ha!
I agree! I have had two of them and they sounded much better than the twin cams or the Milwaukee 8 that I have owned.
When I got my shovel I put dragpipes on it. I rode down the High street and could see people looking hundreds of yards away looking round to see what was coming;-)
Shovels for ever.....great vid. Love it.
That gave ne flasbacks - when I was a kid seeing British bikers riding choppers just like that. The fine art of looiking like you’re barely hanging on to a maniac machine
Sounds like a 2 cylinder radial engine..
I love the sound of a radial
4.53 sounds like John Bonham just woke up and noodling on the banisters on his way down for a coffee. 10.24 13.07 13.49 my next faves. Pure music!
"What's your favorite motor sound?" Answer: a running one hahahaha
I took my Shovel to the Harley dealer and said there is something wrong with it, it makes this sound; "potato potato potato" and he said "yeah that's a problem, those... OLD Harleys... are known to make funny sounds like that."
He told me to buy a new one they are made in Malasiya and have Asian engines and have shiny chromed plastic bits "they are really good now" he said...
I told him to "f#ck off" and rode away
