Awesome, thanks for covering this, Mr. Icarus! As the author of the mod I hear your criticisms and it looks like your concerns are shared with the commenters here. The powerup's purpose does need to be better telegraphed. I think I have an idea for how to resprite the Rescue Sphere, and I'll keep the purple heart sphere sprites (which were done specially for me!) as a separate inventory item that gives an instant full heal to Violet, as I agree that that purpose makes the most sense. More of these collectable inventory items are planned, incidentally. Regarding the slow/awkward pushing mechanic: I did initially have a "carrying" feature included in a VERY early prototype of this mod which swapped out your weapon for the ability to carry Violet around, but at some point the feature completely broke and I scrapped it out of frustration. (This was before the mod was made public, so naturally I wanted to take care of everything myself instead of enlisting help - but I could totally do that now.) If I could do something about Doom's collision physics to make Violet easier to escort around, then I absolutely would - for instance her hitbox being cylindrical instead of square would probably help things feel immensely smoother, but this is presently an impossibility even in the ZDoom engine. I do have plans for 4 more full-length maps for this mod and I hope to get them done soon. We'll see how the current mechanics stack up when I implement them into the full episode, and of course I'll be making changes as necessary, as I realise it's probably far from perfect as-is. Community feedback is, as always, appreciated in helping me do so, too. Again, many thanks for your interest. :D
What a f*kin weird game: Just throw some jellybeans into this nebulous sentient blob and it'll do anything from turn into a magic carpet, or turn into a ladder, or envelop you for deep sea adventure! I remember it being, specifically, called 'David Crane's A Boy and His Blob' and IIRC David Crane's only other claim to fame was Pitfall!. No small accomplishment, for sure, but, just... 'Yeah, I did Pitfall!... and... a Boy and His Blob....'

Perhaps this can be done with a Stamina pool. Like, convert the health-bottles to stamina bottles, and have few of them, so that carrying the barrel becomes indeed something you either used when it's stuck, or, indeed to tactically place it so that it will be as little under threat as possible. With the stamina-pool, usage of it will be more tactical, because carrying it drops stamina. Hence, it won't break the flow of the map, because it'll be used more in caution...
you dotn actually have to nudge it, if you run at full speed it goes FASTER than you, icarus is just nudging it because it works weird due to engine reasons and hasnt had the rules meticulously explained to him
So here's the Companion Cube mod. We need a new variant of Rule 34: If it exists, there's a Doom mod of it. Also, I'm genuinely surprised that a Web search doesn't uncover an actual Boy & His Blob mod / jellybean-based mutation mod for Doom.
I agree with other posters that you have to have the ability to carry it, but I would add that (at the least) you should have the ability to PULL the barrel as well as push it. Hell, even the ability to throw the barrel - imagine a wall you have to throw your barrel over and then you have to rush over to it when monsters appear once the barrel lands on the other side.
For puzzles like this, the mod has bounce pads (code done by yours truly, heh). I'm also working on a pulling/pushing mechanic right now, will likely be in the next version of the mod, whenever Jimmy rolls that out.
One thing that could be added to help with the maneuverability issue is allowing you to grab the barrel, but restrict your movement to just pivoting/turning . So basically youd be able to aim, or get it off walls, but still have to actually push the barrel around.
I played this a while ago and it was better than I thought. I pushed it off for a while, since I dislike escort missions and thought I wouldn't have much fun with it, even though I found it interesting, so I'm glad about it. While Doom's "barrel pushing"-mechanics to make it rather tedious, it was so fun overall that I didn't even mind that. I sure look forward to future incarnations of this mod and its levels.
One of my favorite minecraft maps was the one where you escorted Enrique the chicken through puzzles in a similar fashion. Companion Cube Syndrome is real, yo!
They should totally add for the gag an enemy that looks like link that moves fast, and is only targeting the barrel... Well, it's also a needed challenge, because, it would make you far more alert on the barrel, and they can make certain places that trigger doors from a bit further behind you that release these links, and they need to have their own unique sound, so that you know to be scared for the barrel when you hear it coming.
how to fix the "stuck to walls" thing? Allow the player to pull the barrel. Holster weapon and go up to it and press the interact button. I am certain that normally with the interact button you use it to heal yourself, but maybe with your weapon holstered it switches from healing you to being able to be pushed and pulled. Would make things interesting
I think a lot of the issues could be remedied by giving you a command that lets you pull the barrel for a couple of seconds at a time for when you accidentally punt it into a corner
I realise what this must have been going for They must have taken the idea of the companion cube from portal and though "What if I implemented this into doom with a mod without straight up remaking portal in a doom mod." You grow compassionate about an inanimate object and you depend on it. First doomguy grows affectionate about it, according to the backstory, then you do too, over the course of the mod, even if it takes a few playthroughs to do it. You are isolated and it is your only friend, even without it being human. It adds depth and a lonely source of happiness, in a sea of sadness. Even with the demons never truly depleting their army, you now have more to fight for. A friend. A companion barrel. And that concept is amazing on its own.
They probably need to integrate the new Brutal Doom ability to pick up the barrel. Well, gotta check out if they did. And they did, you can move the barrel by "grabbing" it with alt-fire.
I have a suggestion for Doom Mod Madness. Have you played Urban Slaughter? It's a wave based mod. You can summon backup Marines. I think they speak Spanish. When they die, they drop backpacks of ammo. You keep fighting until you die and try to get a good score. It has custom weapons. It's pretty fun to play with an infinite ammo cheat lol. I'd like to see your take on it.
Have you considered looking at the Beautiful Doom mod? It's like a combination of Smooth Doom and the Ketchup Gore mod. I think it's certainly worth a look for most Doomers.

It would probably break the flow of the map... but it's early days for this mod. A lot can change as it continues to be worked on.
