When I purchased it, the dealer fitted new tyres and also had to replace the rear hatch window as the high level stop light was not working. Since then, the only thing that went wrong was the 12V battery required replacement. All the reset of the expenditure is for enhancements. I'm amazed at how well it kept up for being ten years old! Free Supercharging is phenomenal! Although I have a couple questions: 1. How much legroom is in the back seat? Does the seat fit you well? Headroom? 2. How long does it take you to supercharge your battery? 3. What's the ride quality like? Any wind noise? And is the suspension stiff given that it's a sports sedan? Thank you!
Charging is limited to 80Kw so it will take longer than newer Teslas. Back seat room was decent, headroom about 2 inches and 1 inch between knees and the driver seat. Ride was good, similar to a Cadillac, newer Teslas are much stiffer. Wind noise was pretty good, surprisingly
Great video, thank you. it’s a perfect video for me right now since I’m pretty sure I’m buying a 2012 model S this weekend. As good as this Car in the video looks, believe it or not, the one I’m looking at looks even better with only 51K miles. The one thing I would replace on these is the MCU1 to the new MCU2 immediately. That will get you all the updated new features. A lot of people with 2017s and older are doing this actually. About 2k but worth it. Everything on that screen will work fast and smooth
Only buy teslas with at least 5 year 50k miles left on powertrain waranty.2019 plus model s or 2021 or newr model 3 or y anything older might not be ideal.
first look up your nearest super charger. my city only has about 15 of them. luckily i live about 3 minutes from one. also consider that for a full charge, on this year of tesla, you might be parked there for about 2 hours for it to charge to a full charge. and if you live in a city with tons of teslas, the wait time would be longer because there could be a line to get to the supercharger. for me its not an issue, but its definitely something to consider.
I have a 2013 p85d I just bought from my buddy for 25k. 116k miles and a few signs of degradation, mainly the software is ridiculously slow and some of the interior in the trunk is falling down. I also have issues with the rear left handle just as you stated in your video ($400 retrofit quote from Tesla so I’m holding off). However I guess my main complaint is it charges pretty slowly. Other than that I’m pretty happy with my purchase, especially when I work down the street from a supercharger and I haven’t paid for fuel since I bought the vehicle (gas prices in CA are $5/gallon right now). My battery health is at 90% according to a third party app. I’m probably going to upgrade the mcu and add some better speakers as the sound quality is surprisingly lackluster. Again, I am not disappointed at all with my purchase as the benefits of this vehicle outweigh the drawbacks by far. I’d also like to upgrade the front bumper to the newer model look as I think the older one is absolutely hideous 😂. I’ve watched some videos on UA-cam and it looks surprisingly easy but costs about 2k.
@@strawdemindset yea...$14,000....there is a youtuber called Richrebuilds that has some content on fixing the battery. I was wondering if mine could of been fixed for much less. There is also a company called Evolve that is working on this same type of repair.
The downfall is the slow charging. Tesla has reduced the speed of charging on those older model S, so it's not good for long distances. And you never know when the battery or motor is gonna fail, which would set you back big money.
@@davidrh74 how long did it take to charge it during your trip? I'm also not sure how much of an issue it is, but wouldn't want to have to stop 2hours for a 500 miles trip.
I would check on the $4K tax credit. I don't know the specs but kbb says $14k is at the high end for the highest trim. Average of $12K. Make sure they aren't including the tax credit in that price. I would try to get closer to $12K then add tax credit. It's not a flat $4k credit either, it's a percentage of the price. 20 or 30% of the price, I think.
Thanks for the video. I'm in the market for a used model S here in AU, 2016 or above to have some battery and motor warranty. With yours, the MCU may only be 8Kb and this buffer causes screens to not open apps and or completely freezes. Tesla will upgrade this MCU to 64Kb for free so its worth considering to do so. The door handle can be rectified with a Tesla repair kit.
My theory has always been that all the Tesla cars up to 2017 were built to make a statement about the quality and reliability of the electric cars. Then when the Model 3 production was started, all the attention to detail had been sacrificed.
That actually makes a lot of sense, once they got established, ignore the build quality and throw Power and Range #'s around and people won't care what it looks like.
@@offtheshelfrides it also has to do with where you put your resources. When the Model 3 was launched to come out, the number of orders to fulfill must have been overwhelming. I don't think Elon wanted to sacrifice any quality of the Model S, but he did have to divide his attention to making sure the latest car not only had met within the expectations of its deadline, but also ensure that the quality of the car had met or exceeded the expectation of the public. Elon like Steve Jobs wants the "WOW!" factor in everything he puts out. He knew he was going up against an industry that would curtail him in every way possible, so his way to beat the system was to exceed far beyond any other car company. I just recently bought a 2016 P90D and I can tell you in all honesty that the car is as solid as the day it was built. (Unlike BMW, Merc, etc.) My point is based on my experience that comes from owning a pizza business for 4 years. I don't think any "rational" business owner wants to sacrifice quality to save a little money. The best scenario is less expense, equal quality. If you have a strong customer base, you know that anything you change can easily change things for the worse. The problem is, you may be doing something that is destroying your business and never know it, because most people won't outright tell you what you're doing wrong, so when you do make these changes, you need to be REAL careful that it doesn't destroy the very foundation that you had built your life upon. My little experience in business really helped me realize just how little I knew about business. Sorry, this came out a bit wordy, and is just my perspective, but I've always loved hearing input from others. I really enjoyed watching your video.
Glad it works for you. I bought a 2013 Mod S P85 for my granddaughter for $8k. 127K miles. Car was beautiful, no scratches, nothing. After 3 months and 1000 miles, I have an $8K brick. No main battery, Teslar repair center want $15,650 for a rebuilt that only has a 30 day warranty(22k for new battery but no warranty on anything else going out). So in my mind, NO Tesla anywhere is a viable used car. It's only worth what it's existing warranty is left. Maybe they could be an expensive lawn ornament, or people can set their tv's up on them or weld the doors and make them into small hot tubs? I never lost that much money on a car before without getting any real use out of it.
I'm sorry that happened. I only had the car for 3 days to make this review and a few charging videos. I enjoyed it and didn't have a problem while I had it.
Get the MCU2 upgrade it'll gain sat nav and transform the user interface experience!! I have a 2015 P90DL and I love it. Paid less than a third of the price it was new
Wow. such a beautiful car. I am only 15 now, but as soon as there is a job opening near me I will work my absolute hardest to be able to afford this car. My dad has a 3 and I love it but there is nothing better than an s, and with medium mileage examples going for just $23,000-$29,000, I want it so bad.
I want the same thing😂 i work a job, but as a trainee still, after it i can make around 3K a month. But i dont like the job too much, but i know if i sell my current car on top of it, i will have the money for a tesla soon
My wife and I have a 2013 October build. Original battery. 140k miles. Bought used straight from Tesla. No autopilot. Backup camera tho. Still gotta make a review but the process was poor to say the least amount of words. Received in Oct 2018 so they were going thru growing pains for sure. EDIT: if that car does not have the "tech package", RUNNN!!!!!! May be why there is no nav.
Tech package doesn't appear to be on this car. The intake strakes by the front lower lights will be chrome on Tech cars. Black on non-tech. Tech cars also had the power rear lift gate.
Can’t you just pay for the new MCU2? I think that’s all you would need to get nav and everything else that comes with it. And I’m sure this one comes with free life time connectivity
biggest problem with 10 year old Tesla is that anytime battery cells might start going bad making it expensive to replace entire battery. or some shops isolate them and cut them out, its cheaper than replacing entire pack but still expensive.
i just bought a bank auctioned 2012 MS 85D with 53k miles for 7k. it needs some love but i feel like i got a great car for my money. to anyone in the comments considering getting one in 2024 it doesn’t feel outdated at all imo. the thing was a decade ahead of its time so it still feels really modern. if you can find one for a good deal i’d 100% recommend.
On certain years, these early ones came with free Supercharging attached to the car instead of the owner. Tesla will remove it if they ever get their hands on it again, which means it has to be serviced by an independent company. If you consider buying one, check with the owner on the free Supercharging.
2:34 You're right it looked like a really attractive and very futuristic sedan when it first came out. And one advantage model s had was there wasnt anything like it in the 2012. But now, everyone makes electric cars and they make it in a way that its no longer a car but a iphone. And tesla updated the model s to a point that it looks so boring and doesnt have any significant or attractive lines on the car. I am still on the market looking for a perfect 2012-2013 P85D with my prefered options and color to arrive (and also the Im looking for a model s with software 1.0 or closer to 1.0).
@@offtheshelfrides Thank you! Yes I am looking for the Tech packace but what I really want is the non-updated model S. I know its going to be really hard to find one with the original software 1.0 but I hope I can find one.
I haven't seen the Leaf in person yet, but I thought panels looked pretty good. If people weren't complaining about them so much, I wouldn't have even commented or even looked at them.
Elon once said the old S seats were terrible. Is that accurate? I believe it is real leather which I much prefer, wish it were an option but options aren't a Tesla thing.
the biggest is the battery . about 10-15k to replace it. given that this was originally a 90k car, id say it could be worth it if you already have that money saved. but this car is probably on the middle of its battery life since they can last up to 300k miles. the newer teslas have a different battery technology which reduces the replacement cost to 6k. after the battery the most lilkely high cost maintainance would be tires, which wear down quicker due to the weight of the car, and the motor mounts which wear out faster for the same reason.

Yea, you never know, but is seen model s's with 200k miles on the original battery. With all the price drops and used Teslas dropping. That 2012 actually sold for $26k I believe...
I have a 2014 Model S and about to sell. Warranty is off after 8 years and when that battery dies soon I,m not interested in paying $16,000 for a new one. And the screen leaks a sticky silicone-like matter that is annoying, had to pay to have that replaced.
I understand, but I don't feel your battery will die. I am sure they used better batteries than were put in the Nissan Leafs and there are a lot of them, still working just fine, except for some degradation.
@@offtheshelfrides I would think there would be a huge difference between SOCAL weather and midwest freeze in the winter--and how many hours you might be driving in the snow. Same with the Mojave Desert, say four hours with the AC on.
Yes, it depends on how you look at it. If it's 30° out and you start up and go, your going to lose 20% range while it heats up the battery and cabin. But once the battery is warm, running the heat or A/C will cause only about a 5% loss in range.
It depends, just like how well someone takes care of an engine, battery longevity depends on how well it was taken care of. If it was fast charged a lot, it will have more degradation, if it was mostly charged at home, that battery will last a long time. Tesla tracks all supercharger activity, so you can see how much it was fast charged.
@@offtheshelfrides because my car is completely dead. The front battery in the drunk was replaced three years ago by Tesla but now they don’t want to cover it and said that all batteries need to be replaced.
Would you recommend me buying a used 2021 model y long range with acceleration boost, 20inch rims and tow hitch. Its selling price is 30,933. But it has 60,700 miles . I’m stuck and don’t know what to do. Anything helps thanks 😊
In my area, Private sell price would be around $32K, a dealership would price probably around $34-35K so I would say it's a pretty decent deal and the Supercharging network is the most reliable for charging right now.
The door fix will run you about $450, the MCU will cost 1800 for the MCU2, they tried to fix mine with replacing the NAV sim but it didnt work and I still got charged. Idk what the 12v battery will run but the high capacity one will cost 14k. You didn't show the mileage but if it has anything over 80k expect a treasure trove of issues to come. Headlights are $357, Heating in my 2013 is sending air to all the vents no matter whats selected on the MCU as well as the AC and heat will work when it feels like it.....Thats 3k. I tried to get an alignment done but the sway bar and some other thing they tried to talk me into was over $1000, and then the alignment would of been $275. Im going to contact Evolve an authorized tesla service center with body work training and see if I can get some better support. In hindsight the biggest mistake of my car purchase life. 😡😡😡😡😡
Wow, sorry you've had so many issues! This one had around 82k, I think it ended up selling for around $26k a few months after I made the video. I hope most of the issues are behind you now.
@@offtheshelfrides that is not a bad price and 82k ls not a lot of miles in Tesla world and it has unlimited free charging for life..... you can't loose on that.
I just borrowed it from the dealership for the weekend. It sold about 2 months later for about $5K less. The dealership had to replace the 12V battery when the sold it. The High Voltage battery seemed to be functioning perfectly while I was using it.
I am not positive, but a friend with a new 2022 base model s said he had to pay $10/month. Other people have said to get one with the TECH package, probably cost a little more but may include navigation
The $10 per month gets you satellite view maps, traffic data and all of the streaming services. I have a Model 3 ordered June 30, 2018 when data was lifetime. I believe that navigation with basic maps has always been included, but I’m no expert beyond my own car.
There is a aftermarket plug in for the old you can get that unlocks all the features on the car and no it’s not illegal. The device costs around 400usd can’t remember the name
The charge time depends on the drain on the battery and slows as it fills up. eg....80kwh charges for me at 250kw/m and as it gets closer to 80% drops to about 80 kw/m stopping at 253. Thats not 100% as you shouldn't charge fully to maintain good battery health. This takes approx 45-50mins
i gotta comment about the panel gaps on teslas: its overblown. my newish infiniti has bigger, more inconsistant panel gaps than any tesla. i see s-classes with massive panel gaps on the showroom floor. every car has inconsistent panel gaps. sorry to tell you
If it was removed, they won't give it back. Someone had it serviced at Tesla and at that time they removed it. Everyone I have talked to said if your not the original owner and you didn't buy it through Tesla, don't take it to them, they will remove it. Maybe the dealership sent it there, or it was removed before the dealership got it.
This is true, though the failure mode is now understood and replacement motors have the fix. Still an expensive fix, but it’s one and done going forward for the large motor repairs.
I thinking to buy one 10-year-old myself. And I hear people around me say the battery will be dead. Very expensive on service. bla bla other pub rumors. So I'm trying to check videos like this one to find out what is reality, It looks like from your video that is actually a good deal.

That might be an option, but there aren't any new Model 3's for $35K. Electrek just announced Tesla is working on a version of the Model 3 with cheaper interior parts for $35K

The one thing I would replace on these is the MCU1 to the new MCU2 immediately. That will get you all the updated new features. A lot of people with 2017s and older are doing this actually. About 2k but worth it. Everything on that screen will work fast and smooth
That's Awesome!
Did you buy it ?
@Ben Phillips no, I didn't. We just borrowed it for the weekend. It is still available!
Is a 150k Tesla for $14,000 worth it?
Only buy teslas with at least 5 year 50k miles left on powertrain waranty.2019 plus model s or 2021 or newr model 3 or y anything older might not be ideal.

Thanks for telling about the supercharge for life now I want it
Happy to help
first look up your nearest super charger. my city only has about 15 of them. luckily i live about 3 minutes from one. also consider that for a full charge, on this year of tesla, you might be parked there for about 2 hours for it to charge to a full charge. and if you live in a city with tons of teslas, the wait time would be longer because there could be a line to get to the supercharger. for me its not an issue, but its definitely something to consider.
Yes, I believe the max charging is around 90Kw on these early models

@offtheshelfrides coolant in the motor?
@offtheshelfrides thanks for the response. Good morning! How are you?
Any other thoughts about the car I mentioned?
Good luck in your search, glad I could help. Thanks for the info!
(Unlike BMW, Merc, etc.)
My point is based on my experience that comes from owning a pizza business for 4 years.

Supercharge for life? So if you buy a second hand model s, you get the free charge too?
On certain years, these early ones came with free Supercharging attached to the car instead of the owner. Tesla will remove it if they ever get their hands on it again, which means it has to be serviced by an independent company. If you consider buying one, check with the owner on the free Supercharging.
@OSRGarage Tesla only removed it, if they resell it. service doesn't break it.

And tesla updated the model s to a point that it looks so boring and doesnt have any significant or attractive lines on the car. the biggest is the battery . about 10-15k to replace it. given that this was originally a 90k car, id say it could be worth it if you already have that money saved. but this car is probably on the middle of its battery life since they can last up to 300k miles. the newer teslas have a different battery technology which reduces the replacement cost to 6k. after the battery the most lilkely high cost maintainance would be tires, which wear down quicker due to the weight of the car, and the motor mounts which wear out faster for the same reason.

On average, expect about 5%.

@OSRGarage thank you, I am in the market to potentially buy an old one, but I'm finding out that there's so much I don't know yet.
