    The classic Ambassadeurs are the greatest reels ever made. That 3.6:1 gear ratio may not be as fast, but the torque reduction gives tremendous power and control. The star drag works as well as the best, and the cast control damping is an engineering marvel. Sixty years later and the competition still hasn't caught up.

    I have a 5000 that my older brother bought new in 1965 (4 screw) and he used it on thousands of trips with me. It has minimal boat rash because he took very good care of it. When his wife gave it to me after his death in 2017 it worked as good as it did new. I also have a 5000B I bought in 1975 and a 4500, 4500C and a 1750 that I still use regularly because they were quality reels that were built to last. I used to have a 5000C and 5000D that were stolen back in the 1980's. Just can't beat the old Ambassaduers.

    I got one just like this on ebay for $40. Not a scratch on it, no boat rash, new dead stock. It works great but I decided not to fish it and bought a new Abu Garcia 5500 C3. It's so smooth and casts forever. Great reels.

    I got one of these reels in august for hy birth day. The first time I casted it It sounded like it was screaming. I took it apart completely and cleaned all of the parts in mineral spirits, greased it, and put back together. I was casting a 1/2 oz. KVD spinner with a bucktail in a local pond and the old ambassadeur performed flawlessly. I cast about 15 or 20 times and i bulled out a fifteen and a half pound large mouth bass. That was the largest fish i hane ever caught. I use this reel on a fenwick fenglass lunkerstick 2000. I collect old abu and garcia reels from before the two companies murged. I am fifteen and have been collecting fishing reels for tho years. Hope to hear back from you soon.
    Garret.

    Those reels are a work of art, I’ve admired them since I started watching your videos. I’ve tried to use a bait caster to no avail, I always tangle them. My son can use one very well.

      Practice! Also, there is a casting damper control on the side of the reel opposite the crank that can be adjusted to assist in backlash control. It's like driving a manual transmission: few people have the patience to learn it, let alone master it, any more. Watch the old Johnny Dieckmann videos from the Mitchell Reel Museum. He made it look easy, but he probably practiced hours every day. Some are posted on UA-cam.

    • @billwalker4836
      @billwalker4836 5 років тому

      You must adjust the fall rate with the lure you are using. You will get a feel for it if you still backlash, tighten it up a little at a time it take patience and practice. You'll get really good at untangling birds nest too : ]

    As I said in the other video I did a rebuild from en 1984 4600-CB with 4,7:1.
