Young Martin’s Reels was created to honor my dad Martin B. Stivers of Louisville KY. He was an avid fisherman and repaired thousands of fishing reels in his lifetime. I spent numerous hours watching him do so, but I have forgotten most of what he taught me. Now that he is gone, and I find myself in need of reel repair, so I am learning how it is done and trying my best to pass it on.

I have one of those reels handed down to me. When you started I was wondering how long it was going take before you realized it was a direct drive. I had the benefit of a grandfather who showed me how it worked.
That’s half the fun of this project, figuring out how each reel was made and how it works. I will say this one took me a while. Did your grandfather like the way the drag system worked on that reel?

It’s a great reciprocative relationship. He supplies me with reels for my show and he gets free repairs. Everyone wins, including his customers. He has become an important asset to Young Martin’s Reels. I haven’t counted but I’d venture to say he has supplied at least a third of the reels I’ve presented on the channel. I have at least another 30 reels of his waiting to be done.

Had me almost yelling at the screen a few times there... Even so, I learned a couple things right along with you, and I appreciate it.
There's got to be a way of re-securing a loose post but I'll bet some special tools are required to do it properly. And probably access to the base of the post on both sides...
I wonder if ultra-thin CA glue could have worked its way between the post and the plate, dried, and provided enough resistance to remove that screw.
I think my last-ditch idea before grinding the head off the screw would have been to try slotting the back side of the post so a flat-head screwdriver could be used to hold the post stationary.
Anyhow, good job.

Mario, that screw was a real pain. What’s really bad is I had completely disassembled it and put it back together without realizing it was a direct drive reel. I knew it looked different but I didn’t take the time to study why.

I thought it was going to be an easy clean and service when I started with it. That screw presented me with quite the challenge. I’m just glad I had the part he needed.

Thanks, it was a bit frustrating but satisfying once I got it finished.
I might be mistaken, but I thought the 5000 D had no drag. Designed for heavy duty fishing.
If you check the schematics for the 5000D you will find drag washers part numbers 3902 and 3903. There are also a drag spacer and a drag shim listed. It has a drag system but it isn’t like most other drags. As long as you are cranking forward on the handle, you have no drag. If you slightly back pedal it the drag takes over. I don’t think I have enough presence of mind to fish it like it is designed to be fished.
That worm gear and paul should be removed and cleaned just like the rest of the things that you failed to remove and clean and it would not hurt to do it with an ultra cleaner. Not very expensive from Amazon. And I would suggest that you should change the worm Gear and Paul out if there is Any slop between them. and you should definatly change out the anti reverse for sure. Those 2 items will make the reel like new...
