  • Hey guys!
    In this video, we’re going to take a look at the new Ark Gravity BFS reel that was announced at ICAST 2023 and straighten up some rumors and look at the differences between it and the Haibo Arise Air. ArkRods was kind enough to send this unit to me “free for review” and I made sure that I am able to give an unbiased review for this product. Stay tuned for a casting video and if you guys want a teardown video but you can just watch the Haibo Arise Air teardown video I made a while back! Cheers all!
    PS If you are interested in finding information of tons of BFS equipment please check out the BFSFISHINGLIST google spreadsheet. It is a free resource that I created for you guys that is an easy way to find specs, videos, and links to purchase.

      Hey Joe! I don’t have much experience with Ark products outside of the gravity reel but I will say that Haibo is a great partner to have manufacturing their reels. Good build quality and performance from what I see. I don’t see why their rods wouldn’t live up to the same standards but I can’t verify anything without actual use. Hope the rods treat you well my friend! Cheers!

      Hey Kenneth! I would too! Unfortunately I don’t have a cormorant and I’m not sure that I’ll go out of my way to purchase one as I still have the ff01 kingfisher which is comparable. Between the three I think the casting performances will be quite close with maybe a difference of around +- 10%. Hard to say without trying but I’ll try to find a non windy day to distance test. I can tell you that for sub 1g lures, aka 0.52g ajing worms, they all cast very similarly. Thanks for the request and cheers my friend!

    I just ordered an Arise Elite during the current sale. I know it has a much larger spool, and a metal body, but I'm curious if it shares the same odd bearing sizes you mentioned. Did you ever handle that version? If not, and your interested, maybe I could loan it to you and you could do a 3 way comparison or something after I get it. Just let me know!

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  Місяць тому

      Hey Dan! Nope never handled the elite as I was more interested in sharing and reviewing the air model. That being said, I’m sure the elite is just as nice if not better than the air. I’m not quite the biggest fan of the gravity’s/arise’s carbon body and the elite looks smaller in hand and an alloy frame as well. Thanks for sharing and cheers my friend!

    I will choose Arise Air except its handle. That is why I choose Arise Pro+ to pair with my St. Croix Legend Xtreme for bass

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  7 місяців тому

      Hey Jinsuo! Long time no see! Yes, I agree the handle is definitely a weak point but I understand that it is also personal preference in this case. I have not quite looked at the other arise pro reels as they are not bfs. I think my main hope for the arise/gravity reels is that they design a new adjustable rotor system that does not require the removal of the side plate. This would make the reel much more convenient to use. In any case, the reels both perform amazingly well. Thank for stopping by and it was good to hear from you! Cheers my friend!

    Remember guys the difference is the braking on the gravity bfs it is a work of art the thing I'm excited for is a little deeper spool to pair with it still including the braking man shimano better look out 😂😂 the key to these magnetic brakes is start at around 90% brake and loosen the spool tension then play around dropping the brakes down a liI found that I can launch cast still for you bank guys launch away 🤙🏽🤙🏽🔥

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  7 місяців тому

      Hey shmelly! I agree that the performance on these reels is quite good. They keep up neck and neck with the Aldebaran bfs and the SS air tw in my testing. Pretty impressive for a reel that is a fraction of their prices. That being said though a lot of budget reels are stepping up their game and their casting performance is getting to the point where they are also on par with the jdm bfs reels. It’s a pretty awesome time for bfs consumers I think. Can’t wait to see what 2024 brings! Cheers my friend!

    Nice comparison. The finish and design (ugly star drag, basic spool tension knob, miniscule handle knobs) are definitely cons, but the Arise Air with an extra spool allows me to fish a wide of lures from 1-10 grams pretty easily. Not ideal to swap spools on the water, but having one set at min and one at max allows me to almost cover the full spectrum of the braking system.
    Looking forward to checking out the spreadsheet.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  7 місяців тому

      Hey Koby! I agree the arise is a great reel with that one slightly annoying oversight with the sideplate removal. I heard that the new revised/upgraded main gear set that the gravity bfs has should be available now. I wonder if it’s possible just to order the mg and pinion from Haibo somehow… in any case, thank you for commenting and stopping by! Are you as your name states still in Korea by the way? Cheers my friend!

    If they fixed the line lay issue and made it smoother it might be worth a bump in price but not the full 40+ Ark is charging. But I'd imagine this reel will have some deals or sales on TW so it might be the better option if you can get it on sale.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  7 місяців тому +1

      Hey bubble! I would say the line lay issue is resolved on this Gravity. Although, I did notice that because the line guide doesn’t travel far enough to each end of the spool that the line tends to be low at the left and right of the spool and then almost looks like a plateau in the middle. It’s not severe and most won’t notice issues as BFS users don’t add too much line but it is a bit odd. The reel does feel markedly smoother than my Arise Air but I was also told that the AA would be getting the revised gear set at some point. I just can’t verify if the AAs have already gotten them or if they will be getting them in the future. I do hope to see some good sale prices on the GB as this mid tier CDM crowd is getting a bit packed now. Thanks for bringing those two points to light and cheers my friend!

    Howdy, the spool cup with the Roman numerals. Which of the 3 settings would be best for all around casting for lures 1/8oz to 3/8oz? I'm on the fence to getting The Gravity BFS, but just a bit confused on the spool cup. Thanks!

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  4 місяці тому

      Hey Joe! I’d say that setting 2, the middle setting, is probably going to be the best bet for the range you mentioned. Really I’d only use setting 1 for when casting really light stuff 1g and under and setting 3 for really windy days or beginners. Hope that helps! Cheers my friend!

      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  7 місяців тому

      Hey Joseph! I agree with you… reels are almost getting to the point where they are becoming too light. I wonder how the ultralight carbon frame will hold up to use and abuse… that being said, the Seasir M1 had an interesting approach to lowering weight but keep strength up with a “composite” frame of a metal chassis and plastic outer shell. Interesting approach that they did not do very well on I have to say… Hoping another company will take this approach to the next level. Am eagerly awaiting to see those salmon photos my friend! The gear ratio is obnoxiously big, otherwise, probably my next BFS reel. Maybe the SS Air TW? Gotta figure out what the proper rod is to pair with this.

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  7 місяців тому

      Hey dragn! Actually for a BFS reel 8.1:1 is not unheard of. The SS air tw is actually even higher at 8.5:1 and I believe the Aldebaran has an 8.9:1 gear ratio version in the XG model. In general, you technically lose a bit of strength in the MG as you go higher in gear ratio number but that isn’t the whole story of “rate”. Instead, you should look to the IPT values of the reels. This will tell you how much line pick up you get per handle turn. It is not a speed so keep that in mind though as speed is distance/time. If we want that then we need the handle crank rpm. Anyways without getting too nerdy the maximum Ipt value of the arise/gravity is 28.1 and the SS air is 29.5. If you have more questions feel free to ask! Hope this helped a bit and cheers my friend!

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  3 місяці тому

      Hey Percy! The cormorant will outcast the gravity but not by much. Instead, the cormorant outclasses the gravity in many other aspects; build material, smoothness, refinement, and build quality/tolerance. Hope that helps! Cheers my friend!

It seems like there is some good interest in the reel as it is quite lightweight as is its spool. is this reel worth the money for the $150 price point? ive tried a few budget bfs reels with disappointing results. i have a zephyr and its spool tensioner is basically useless, it goes from 0-100 in less than one click tighter, which makes it impossible to cast ultralight lures or even simply dial the reel in. i have a 40 dollar chinese bfs reel that casts 10x better than the zephyr. bfs is so niche that everything is either very cheap or very expensive, and i really dont want to drop 200+ just to get a decent reel that works as its intended to. this reel fits my budget well, but i cant find much about it online. im mostly fishing small texas rigs, small swimbaits, and micro cranks, but it would be nice to cast 1-2 gram lures as well.

      Hey Iron! Would love to help with this but unfortunately I’m not really sure there’s any real way to know… I would assume that any new stock that they’re receiving would have this update? That being said, the old “geariness” of the v1 gearset wasn’t all that bad and would likely “wear in” over time. Sorry I can’t really point you to any specific vendor… You can also try asking them point blank but I think a few folks tried that a while back and they really didn’t have any idea haha. Actually, wait scratch that, I do know of one vendor that reported to have the new gearset AAs in stock. Dankung has said that they do have the new gearset but their price is a bit higher than what you’ll see on aliexpress and their shipping takes, on average, a week to a week and a half longer the aliexpress shipments, in my experience. Hey keep! I would say that this reel is a lot more capable in casting lighter lures than the zephyr is. The zephyr has a much larger spool and is an older design now. It’s still a great reel but just not as capable with casting 1-10g lures vs this reel. That being said, both reels are carbon frame reels so if you don’t want that plastic/resin feel then you may need your go up to either an alum or, better yet, a magnesium alloy framed reel. Hands down though I would take this reel over the zephyr. Let me know if you have any other questions or want advice on picking out a different bfs reel! Cheers my friend!

How many reels have that much adjustment for brakes, with 60 different settings? This is not a negative that’s a positive! You could be in my shoes with a Shimano Curado bfs with only 6 adjustments to my brakes, and a heavy spool.

While the braking system isn’t an exact copy of the FTF system the design is fairly close. Unfortunately, I did not pick one up during the 11.11 sale but I do know a few other reviewers that will have a unit they will show on their channels. Cheers my friend!

    How do these reels work for Bass? Are they durable enough for open water Bass?

    • @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL
      @BFSFISHINGCHANNEL  7 місяців тому

      Hey d510! Thanks for your question and I’ll try to answer that to the best of my ability. I would say it depends… BFS reels are essentially SUL/UL/L/ML style reels. They have thin walled, shallow depth spools that are meant to store light line. So… I guess it would depend on how you fish and with what type of tackle. This particular reel is rated to cast 0.6-10g lures and so if you’re casting heavy swimbaits then this is definitely not the reel for you. However, if you’re casting finesse lures that are lightweight and using lightweight tackle and appropriate bfs rods then yes I would say these are durable. If you get into a huge bass your line would likely break before these reels. Keep in mind the drag is also not a very high rating coming in at around 5kg. So… really I think the answer is does the reel fit how you fish more than is the reel durable enough for open water bass. Would love to know what you think and if I was able to help give you a better idea of what these style reels are for. Thanks so much for your question and cheers my friend!

      @@TheD510addict hey d510! So I think the factors that will help determine whether this reel or another reel will be suitable are going to be what lure weights will you be normally casting, and how much line do you think you’ll actually need or how far do you typically cast. This particular reel is set to handle 0.6-10g lures which is just about 3/8 oz. Additionally, typically speaking bfs reels, in general, are meant to only hold about 50m of line or right around 164 ft. The idea is that more than that and you’re adding weight to a lightweight spool and increasing the moment of inertia making it harder to cast lures on the low end of the reel lure weight rating. Anywho, the alphas 800s looks like it will be a decent finesse reel. I think it’s meant to be put up against the Curado bfs and so has similar specs. Before you make a decision though I think you should consider what lure weights you want to cast and how much line you’ll need on your reel. Let me know and I’d be more than happy to help suggest reels! Cheers my friend!

      @@TheD510addict hey d510! Ah ok so it does sound like casting right around 2.5-3g most likely. In that case, if you can stretch your budget a bit I’d suggest the Aldebaran bfs from a Japanese retailer. For right around $255 it’s hard reel and price to beat for what you get. The alphas 800s is not a bad reel and probably a bit more versatile in say the 3.5-15g weight range but I can’t not recommend the Aldebaran over the alphas. The Aldebaran will do 1-10g lures comfortably and casts extremely well. Just figure out your budget and your lure weight range and you should be good to go. Cheers my friend!

      Hey Tony! I think the arise was released around March or April of this year? The CDM releases new reels during the spring and I guess USDM around icast or summer. Haibo has had the “head start” with the reel release as they are the OEM for Ark. I forgot to add that they saw/see the Chinese market as sort of a larger test bed for the product and then made small revisions and improvements for the U.S. market. You are correct in stating that Ark doesn’t manufacture the reels. Hope that helps clarify that a bit. Cheers my friend!
