Inside the Multi-Billion Dollar Abandoned Tourism city of Nigeria

  • In today's video, I visited cross river state, a state once considered the tourism capital of Nigeria, known for having the biggest street party in Africa, the highest-paid mountain race, the popular Obudu cattle Ranch, and the Tinapa Business and leisure resort. Fast forward to 2022, the town is now an abandoned city mainly due to corruption and lack of vision. In today's video, we toured the city and asked questions about why the tourism capital of Nigeria is fading.

The problem of Nigeria is subjugation not corruption. Everything is controlled from the center. The North (Hausa/Fulani) controls the center. They will never allow the South benefit from its own resources. Southern Nigeria is an open air concentration camp. Sadly many cannot see it.

Yeah, that's correct. The truth of the matter is that everybody is now involved in the corruption, even down to the man selling garri in the open market. Just recently I tried to search for NIN and the clerical officer insisted that I must give him 10,000 bribe before he would do his job. The whole country has become one cesspit of corruption and brigandage. Everyone is involved but all pointing the accusing finger on the other.

This video touches my heart ❤️🌺🌹🕊️. Because we have a school in Jamaica that is named after this place, which means that some of the people were brought from Calabar to Jamaica. Jamaica is a very beautiful country, but it is plagued with some of very same problems. Greedy politicians who misappropriate public funds for their personal use at the expense of people are destroying our countries.

This broke my heart. In my entire life, I have never ever wanted or desired to visit Nigeria because to me as a West African, we live under the same circumstances so there’s really nothing different to see, but this video showed me so much that I desired to go and experience the tourism village, except as usual, it has been shut down. As I said, we all live under the same circumstances. Less than 30 minutes from where I live is a gorgeous park with a dancing fountain that rivaled that in Dubai. People travelled from other parts of the country to come and see it, and now, it’s shut down. We deserve better! Our hard earned money in the form of taxes are used to build these beautiful edifices. And they are just allowed to be run down. The place is so beautiful, Steven. The view from the drone is breathtaking. I’m sad. Just sad. Will things ever change? It’s disheartening.

So beautiful there. Here in America I just love watching anything involving Africa. Things I wasn’t shown half my life. It’s so much to see, I’ll always have something to watch. Seeing the slave trade area is hard to swallow for obvious reasonings. Without my ancestors perseverance through it, I wouldn’t be here.

The "slave route/port" at calabar was one of the busiest in Africa then. Most "slaves" from the Eastern hinterland of Nigeria, especially the igbos were transported from the calabar and adjoining ports. Most of these "slaves" ended up in the US and the Caribbean. Hope you visit someday cos here is also your land. But that has to be when things get back to normal .. Cheers

What an absolute beautiful gem of an area that has been wasted and abandoned. It reminds me of those Olympic villages that get built for billions then fall to waste after the olympics are over because of lack of upkeep and future vision from current and future governments. What a sad waste for Nigeria and the people that were employed there. Love from Canada

As a child I loved visiting these places with my parents, I remember playing games at the games arcade in Tinapa, visiting the museum, reading at the beautiful library. Calabar also had the best public transport system in NIGERIA; it was called “metro blue” buses and very beautiful looking taxis.
EbonyLife was once broadcasting from Calabar and the movie “Half of a Yellow Sun” featuring the award winning Chiwetel Ejiofor was shot in Tinapa and Calabar.
When Calabar was at its peak it was a crime to litter the streets and you would get arrested if you did, it was clean and green and ahead of it’s time. Now, we weep for the state.

The USA is very money hungry and corrupt. Don’t be fooled by what you guys see on tv… much love to my African people‼️❤️🥰🔥

I lived in Calabar for two years before moving to Lagos so seeing the delapidated, sorry state of Cross River state now has broken my heart. I remember the fond memories I created in this state while enjoying Tinapa and Marina resort in their glory and shed a tear, this is heartbreaking. The state is truly a shadow of itself, telling the tales of lost glory due to corrupt and lack of visionary leadership. Ha! Nigeria 🇳🇬

Obudu is one of the mismanaged tourist sites in Nigeria. I just left there yesterday and I think your video is putting a lot of people on tension... Also I didn’t get to see Sonny a tour guide feature on this video, I just hope he wasn’t sacked. I got to calabar and the once cleanest state in Nigeria looks like a shithole. Tbh almost has to be done to revive cross river. Well done 👍🏾

Awww I had such a great experience at Obudu cattle ranch in 2011 and again in 2017. In 2011 I was in awe of the place and enjoyed the cable cars, I told everyone about Obudu and felt so proud. Come 2017 the cable cars were not working, the decay was clearly evident, we still made the best of our time and enjoyed the tour whilst crossing the canopy but it's hard to tell anyone to go after that last time because you might not find anyone who can help you. We had to find someone from the town before to climb up with us in their car, that alone was an experience.
Thanks for shedding a light on the way things work there. Unfortunately all of Nigeria has a way of abandoning projects. New people in government don't see the vision of what is working and tend not to have foresight. What a shame. I will hold on to the good memories. And wish all of Cross Rivers well. To think I hoped to take my son to Obudu, I hope I can.
