Lagos is the smallest state in Nigeria and the most populous state in Nigeria. It is congested. The Nigerian government should send them to their various states. These people don't even care about their condition, yet they have more children than rich people.
The government can be creative with this place and make it better. This is not the only floating town n the world but they are not this terrible. Even Benin republic has a floating town which looks way better than this. Lagos is not creative when it comes to town planning.

You just need to understand the history of that place, it's not the normal kinda slum that spring up within the city. This is an old settlement long before the Europeans arrived the place known as Nigeria today. Most of the resident of that place are origins of Benin Republic & Togo, there's a similar place in Benin Republic called Ganvie. French & Britain only came to create colonial borders that divided them. The Lagos state Govt have been trying to remove them but they claim it's their ancestral land, hence the loggerhead and stalemate on the community.

It’s truly sad what many kids have to go through! Our governments have failed us, BUT we cannot let the inhabitants keep giving birth! One of the main problems we have in rural Africa is high birth rate! Imagine in such conditions, yet they keep giving birth to kids over and over. Lower birth rate will help the situation. Cleaning a slum on water is not the same as cleaning up a slum on dry land. Besides Kibera is not the only slum in Kenya, it's dirty elsewhere, a Kibera only a rainy day is as bad as Makuku if not worse.

What is happening to the Village of Makoko is not their fault at all. The sewage that and filthy water is a result of Lagos. That bay is flooded daily with waste water from Lagos. The people there just have to deal with it because they have no rights and the government officials want to get rid of them. The village is deemed an eye sore in the lagoon.
What that white man said can actually work, have been to farms where they only use water to plant ☘️, and saw dust. I think we as individuals can collaborate to make something work for people in that community 😢, I'm really heartbroken people are actually going through so much.

This is very sad! The Nigerian government should do something to help these people. That President needs to step down; resign and let someone who cares about their country and people take over!!! Someone younger!!! I am the 13th of 15 children. We were poor and my older siblings did not have much schooling but they worked and helped us younger ones! Sorry but its not just the goverment. In west (europe) people pay tax and there is limitations on wealth. Africa doesn't have that, its clear when you look at the gap between the rich and poor areas in the video. Basically Europe and Asia limit the market to create security but Africa is run by the market. In regards to fighting poverty, its wasn't just goverments that started regulating the markets there where Unions and the labor movements. Countries like Nigeria, lvory Coast and other hard-core neoliberal countries need a more critical approach to gab between rich and poor.

I think he is absolutely right, that this could be a tourist attraction if it got some upgrades. Like like sewer system, electricity, wifi, clean water, some plants, it could be really cosy. Steven nice tour of Makoko the Venice of Nigeria, the neighboring country of Benin has a similar city. The city of Abuja needs to invest in Makoko to make it a clean, beautiful, and healthy neighborhood.
It might sound far fetched, but this community remind me of Venice. When I was there, between all the opulent churches and masterpieces were thousands of cramped tiny medieval houses which looked similar to this, but build with different materials. So if rich there would reinvest atleast some of the money to reinforce local community, it would help a lot and create a gem, even if it may be rough one
Best part of this video is showing that even Nigeria has better rights than Canada does, that at least the poor and rich live largely equally despite lack of money.

Watching the beginning of this video, it's sad how the Nigerian government can not see that there is urgent need for massive education and enlightening of the people living in this community as well as provision of amenities suitable for humans. Rather, they are just interested in building more unaffordable housing. Something needs to be done fast if not, we are simply creating trouble for the future because all these children lacking basic amenities are easy targets for gangs and all manner of evil people. We need to educate our people that having more children than you can look after is a sure way to remain in poverty. If you are struggling to provide for yourself, it is unfair, selfish and wicked to bring a child into the mix and worst still, expect that the children will get you out of poverty. It's high time we started a massive mind changing campaign on how we view children and make people aware of the dangers they expose children to when they are born into severe poverty.
Awareness alone is not enough there needs to be structural change, as long as companies can profit from paying people who live in poverty starvation wages things will stay the same
I may agree with some of the things you said but you are focused on only seeing that as a problem probably because you think underpopulation is not a problem. Population is not a problem if the government can utilize it and make them productive. The government has no trust in it's people and see the white man as gods. As such they would rather patronize the whiteman than allow their own to build it. The American has concepts that are simple and can be implemented if materials are availed. It’s truly sad what many kids have to go through! Our governments have failed us, BUT we cannot let the inhabitants keep giving birth! One of the main problems we have in rural Africa is high birth rate! Imagine in such conditions, yet they keep giving birth to kids over and over. Lower birth rate will help the situation. Yeah. I've been saying this for the longest. Nigeria needs to have some form of population control & start educating the public to use contraceptives. For a country that is underdeveloped & poor, the last thing anyone with common sense should do is have children they can't afford to care for.

Cleaning a slum on water is not the same as cleaning up a slum on dry land. Besides Kibera is not the only slum in Kenya, it's dirty elsewhere, a Kibera only a rainy day is as bad as Makuku if not worse.

What is happening to the Village of Makoko is not their fault at all. The sewage that and filthy water is a result of Lagos. That bay is flooded daily with waste water from Lagos. The people there just have to deal with it because they have no rights and the government officials want to get rid of them. The village is deemed an eye sore in the lagoon.
The water is dirty, but the people, their clothes, homes and boats look very clean.
What that white man said can actually work, have been to farms where they only use water to plant ☘️, and saw dust. I think we as individuals can collaborate to make something work for people in that community 😢, I'm really heartbroken people are actually going through so much.

Second, thank you for this content and can we start a debate on the whole birth rate in Makoko? How can it make sense to them who are already poor to have so many children who aren't even all able to go to school?
Lastly, can you ask Africhange to come to Angola because western union in Angola is a true hustle the way it is organised through some banks (really no one likes going to those banks to get their money of remittance and Western Union does nothing about it). Maybe having competitors it will help change the way customers are treated.

I am the 13th of 15 children. We were poor and my older siblings did not have much schooling but they worked and helped us younger ones! We got out of poverty; not to vast wealth but to where we could all be contributing to each other’s needs.

Sorry but its not just the goverment. In west (europe) people pay tax and there is limitations on wealth. Africa doesn't have that, its clear when you look at the gap between the rich and poor areas in the video. Basically Europe and Asia limit the market to create security but Africa is run by the market. In regards to fighting poverty, its wasn't just goverments that started regulating the markets there where Unions and the labor movements. Countries like Nigeria, lvory Coast and other hard-core neoliberal countries need a more critical approach to gab between rich and poor.

It might sound far fetched, but this community remind me of Venice.
When I was there, between all the opulent churches and masterpieces were thousands of cramped tiny medieval houses which looked similar to this, but build with different materials.
So if rich there would reinvest atleast some of the money to reinforce local community, it would help a lot and create a gem, even if it may be rough one

Watching the beginning of this video, it's sad how the Nigerian government can not see that there is urgent need for massive education and enlightening of the people living in this community as well as provision of amenities suitable for humans. Rather, they are just interested in building more unaffordable housing. Something needs to be done fast if not, we are simply creating trouble for the future because all these children lacking basic amenities are easy targets for gangs and all manner of evil people. We need to educate our people that having more children than you can look after is a sure way to remain in poverty. If you are struggling to provide for yourself, it is unfair, selfish and wicked to bring a child into the mix and worst still, expect that the children will get you out of poverty. It's high time we started a massive mind changing campaign on how we view children and make people aware of the dangers they expose children to when they are born into severe poverty.
Awareness alone is not enough there needs to be structural change, as long as companies can profit from paying people who live in poverty starvation wages things will stay the same

Population is not a problem if the government can utilize it and make them productive. The government has no trust in it's people and see the white man as gods. As such they would rather patronize the whiteman than allow their own to build it.

The way the guy explained the loss of life which happened that year is funny, as if the Govt just came there and started shooting at people. There are hoodlums and bad guys there as well who engaged the law enforcement agents and that led to the fracas. Anyway i hope the Govt and the Makoko people find a middle ground in resolving this issue. The Govt should just accept the fact that Makoko is a city that has come to stay and older than many cities wihin the Lagos metropolis. Its a bone in the neck. Good job Steve

They need a bed to produce more kids, what a very stupid request. They may not be rich in money but rich in kids, what a calamitous statement. These people are largely the architect of their misery. Procreating at such a rate only increases poverty and crime. Government needs to relocate them and tax them for every child given birth to beyond 2 or 3 children.
