I visited Senegal to investigate if Akon city is truly a scam

- For today's episode I traveled to Senegal to see for myself, if Akon City is truly a scam like people say it is. Akon launched a Wakanda-themed city in 2018, the first phase is to be completed this year, so my curiosity and love for futuristic cities took me to Dakar Senegal

I think it doesn't have to be futuristic, just build a city with excellent and well organized amenities that is drainage, roads, parks, hotels, add on the citys strength and culture,it still can be done but the investors really need to get on it,kudos Akon!,it was obviously not an easy project but it can be done.
I agree to that
That's true
Exactly , 100 percent
But why did Akon think it has to be futuristic?

I never heard about the Akon lighting Africa project, that's very impressive. At least he's giving back and hopefully he does build his City, I wish him all the best.
Ya, he did well on that one
@@StevenNdukwu Show it. Prove it's true.
@@bluecafe509 Google/UA-cam it. He did very well with the Lighting Africa project but fail miserably with Akon city
The story of that project is not exactly accurate. Do a little research.
Even that one is full of lies lol
I've worked in real estate development and I can believe it when he says that things have gotten delayed. Theres so many things you have to complete before you even begin building anything. The construction part is the quickest and easiest part.
I can only imagine all the permits and behind the scenes legal mumbo jumbo
No, they don't have the same permit processes there. Much easier to build. It's just a scam, that simple.
Bro this isn’t Germany it’s Senegal there aren’t that many regulations
@@lolsoos4205 As an architect , I can agree the fact it takes a lot of time to plan , design and execute and add the bylaws and government permits and added price variations and inflation and the thousand other things like difficulty bringing skilled labour and equipment issues and budget management , it take a lot of courage to initiate projects like this , kudos to akon

In Africa local private developers always have problems with the government
LOL $30,000,000 for a statue when Africans could have done so much with that money
@@DeltaMale5000imagine, although you can give credit and say it may have boosted tourism but that money is probably still paying back the $30m. Questions can still be asked how is it helping the people of Senegal or the local community where it is built. My guess is it’s lining “big fish” pockets
Maybe Burkina Faso is the best place for Wakanda. It's fresh thinking!!!
Yes politics
mostly cause the govt doesn't want to appear stupid, which it is.
Bravo to you Steven, you undoubtedly the best UA-camr in Nigeria right now. Given the quality and value information videos you make

This video was well presented, well narrated and well edited. Very short and informative. I enjoyed every bit of the history. I would like to believe that one day this city will come to life, it may not happen now but as long as Akon has this dream, then nothing is impossible. Senegal is indeed a beautiful country!!
It's so cool to see so many videos about Africa, feels like I don't get to learn or hear much about these incredible countries as much as I did growing up!
The ideation is applaudable.
Hopefully he gets the teamwork and funds to continue the project, because such accomplishment isn't easy to execute.
Well that’s true
Where would the $$$ come from?
Well he already took millions from people like you who thunk the idea is “applaudable” wtf that means. And they want their funds back but he’s not paying up.

Hi Steven, I loved your video 💪
I have been following this project for a while.
To the best of my knowledge I think the following is going on:
I believe Akon has trouble with SAPCO, the Senegal ministry of tourism.
They are claiming Akon did not follow up on the land lease agreement where Akon City is supposed to be built.
Also, SAPCO has offered a piece of the same land to a hotel company which has got nothing to do with the Akon City project.
The situation is upsetting to Akon and to some Senegal citizens, claiming that it is typical Senegalese bureaucracy & corruption which is holding Senegal back from a better economic future.
Personally I hope Akon can do some damage control and get the project back on track again.
Ghana supposedly also showed some interest in the Akon City project and is presumably willing to offer Akon some land to setup a similar project.
The only one who can shed some light on the current situation is Akon himself.
I hope he does an interview again soon to give us an update.
It's true that the crypto token Akoin is not listed anywhere on crypto trading sites anymore.
However you can get ahold of the token in a Stellar DEX like LOBSTR using the swap function.
All Akron need is an open investment policy for Black living in the west can invest and return whenever they want to. Our money and us go together.
The segment about Gorrey Island and the "Door of no return" just made me COMPLETELY LOSE IT😭😭😭😭😭😭 .That my fore-fathers might have walked through that accursed door NEVER to return,is too unbearable to fathom...
Same ❤️🩹😢
These Africans continue to try to get paid from the trade of the enslaved people by giving tours of prisons they constructed. They were the architects of the trade. Do you think the white man traveled into the heart of black Africa and kidnapped people. Get real. Sold for trinkets and beads. SMFH.
That's was proof that the Africans sold there own ppl to the whites...so I don't wanna hear shit about the white man and slavery anymore...the blame starts with its own ppl
You can make that journey for their sake and walk back through that doot and make his spirit happy. You're free to make that pilgrimage at least once. 🙏🏾👍🏾
@@Roestradd You didnt get it did you?.
Akon city aside, Senegal does have a great master plan to move their capital city and have rail connect the old and new city with several developments in between the, and the stadiums, parks, government buildings etc... I hear they are making great progress on this project. I'd like to hear more about it if you can
Moving the capital will ruin the land dakar was qlways the best capital

Great video. Very inspirational !
A civil construction project is not a university lecture that is supposed to go on schedule. If one commercial building can delay with two years, what about a city? Most budgets are just indicative budget estimates. It will be built if its supposed to happen.
This type of project is what one would expect from an entire country not from one man. We have seen this in Dubai but from one person, it would be an herculian task.
The only common sense comment. When it comes to Africans doing great things we are often criticized, even by our own people. It’s one man. Everyone needs to give Akon a break!
Worst excuse ever. Sometimes you have to accept some people are just talkers. He stated in the interview that certain buildings had been built but they hadn't. That is called lying. The first thing we need to do is call out liars. those are the true enemies of progress. On top of that you need to ask you self if you would rather hear about and amazing project and feel good about it, or actually see it getting done or take part in getting it done.
@thundavolt it's not an excuse bro, civil and infrastructure works take even 5 years before being executed. Project feasibility can take 3-5 years. By the time you're ready, other investors can shift their company projections/financial focus. Major projects are complex. All that you can do is critise those who trying, when you can't even organise a team of 5 towards a successful minor project. Relax my bro, if you're not in civil & infrastructure works, you can never grasp it. Remember, you'll be approaching major companies to part away or invest 100s of millions 🤔 in a city. It's not child's play constructing an entire city. The good thing is the land has been secured for now. Let's give a man @least 10 yrs to work & organise. Even the whole government projects delay with decades where you're living what abt a single person spearhead such a humongous project.
@@thundavolt I work in general contracting and have been 1 of many contractors on big jobs none a as big as this and I see how hard it is to get everything together because you're not getting 1 business to work right, You're getting a bunch of businesses and systems to work together. That takes years of planning. If you have experience or an example of something this big happening faster, please don't hesitate to make us aware.
True! The buildings looks like it's not achievable.
