Steve’s exposition on your show is highly entertaining and insightful. The young man did justice to all the amazing questions thrown to him. He demonstrated intelligence and global exposure in his analysis. Very impressive. Keep going Steve. Great guy!
Hi Steven, the real reason why Igbo parents often advise that we build a house in the village is due to the civil war, during which the Igbos lost their property/investments in other parts of Nigeria. The younger generation was willing to move on from the war, but recent events during the last election, particularly what happened in Lagos, have reinforced why our parents' advice is still relevant. We hope that the level of bigotry and hatred in Nigeria will come to an end, but it doesn't seem to be improving. This is the main reason why it is important to have property in the village-because, in Nigeria, you never know what might happen.
I will be happy if you people always say the truth because no body hate you ,you are the ones who brought hatred to yourself because of your behaviour towards other tribes even the Biafra war was caused because of your greediness when Azikiwe and Agu ironsi was in power igbo did not brought Biafra until power shifted to ther tribes that was when Biafra started. you want to dominate every one pls change your behaviour of am the most wise or the most successful among the other tribes and surely you will see pure love
@abdulfataiabdulraheem4645 Let's focus on the main issue here. The Igbo people lost their properties all over Nigeria, which is why we're advised to invest in properties back home. During the last election, the Igbo in Lagos simply exercised their right to vote for their preferred candidate. They were then told to leave Lagos and other parts of the Southwest. The fear that existed after the civil war is still very much alive today. That's what we should be addressing, not who was at fault or what caused the war. That's a whole different conversation.
@MrChima17 thats the problem. Rumor travel faster than fact! Who told igbo to leave Lagos? Igbo people are just buttered cause Obi didn't win and made up rumor traveled fast. Some people showed fake videos, saying they were destroying igbo shops. It's just crazy. U guys need to stop feeling hated and being defensive. Everybody is busy trying to get better, not caring abt hating igbo!
@MrChima17 going by your narration, you are still referring to the Civil War, but the bitter truth is that Igbo were the ones causing hatred for themselves by calling Lagos is no man's Land pls can I go to Enugu or Anambra and claim those places are no man's Lands
@@MrChima17 Lies from the pit of hell. Ibo lost their properties only in the EAST among other tribes that are closers to them e.g. Rivers state. We all know the story of Alex Ekweme and the Banker neighbour who helped collect his rent when he was away and saved his money. Yoruba people did not take away Ibo properties. You people started the killing other peoples leader and thinkl you can get away with it. Build in your village, I don't care, let it gather dust, even though you and your children will not live there, that's your palava. Just dey your dey and we go dey our day, na una dey rush our side.
It's not about getting sense. By God's grace my hubby and I are financially blessed and my child actually schooled in UK and moved to US so if anythinghe'ssupposed to be too westernised to bother with our culture but he's so proud of where he'sfrom that his school in LA celebrated our INDEPENDENCE and even asked me to send them our ethnic food so they can make it for the boarders and they had a big party! Being refined or westernised does not mean we can't still enjoy village. Last December my kids had an option of going to Dubai and staying in Atlantis the Royal but they opted for our village😅😅 We have a home (we are British citizens living in Nigeria) in UK and travel the world with our kids but guess what? My boys love going to the village still. They love swimming in the pool with cousins and random village kids that live around us. Going back home for Christmas is still in our culture (or are we about to erase that too because we are woke?) Just the way white people have holiday homes abroad, it's OK for we igbos to also have ours because we get to use it when necessary. All I'll advise is that you don't pour all your money building a village house while suffering in town still renting. Wait till you can do it because for now, a village house in the east is not an investment but we never know what the future of East might be tomorrow. Steven I'll advise you buy lands in your village and keep it because things might change in future for our region.
I'm definitely building a house in the village. I'm not from Paris, I'm not from New York, I'm not from Lagos, I'm from EAST. I think every IGBO Man should build a house where they are from. Unless you don't plan to go back to the east, then that's one thing, but if you are like the 90% of the people who plan to go back to the east then are you going to just always stay in a damn hotel? Some people want to build a vacation home where they go and vacate to
@JustThinkingAboutIt: Gbam! You hit the nail on the head. Steven is clueless on this specific point. A personal home, no matter how small, should be a priority in one’s village. It is the one location that is guaranteed not to change.
@@raymondjeegbe Vacation houses are not meant for money generation! It's meant for personal gratification and prestige and in the case of us Igbos, heritage!
It was engaging. Didn't think I would spend that much time watching this and in the middle of the night as well. Confidence... you are doing a good job!
Homage to Chinua Achebe, I suspect he's not smiling right now based on this headline. Steve read and study, "Things Fall Apart" maybe you'll understand why some build in their ancestral lands. Peace and blessings.
By your analogy, Nigerians abroad should not even bother to own property in Nigeria, right? See, people should be allowed to do things according to their wishes, conventions and beliefs. Everything is not about money profit-making. We Igbos believe that after retirement, a man must return to his father’s homeland, that’s why we build befitting homes in the village. That is where we call home. You can’t fault that! Even Europeans and Americans have holiday homes, far from the cities where they do business. They re not stupid! People should not listen to this misleading advice. Secure a home for yourself where nobody can demolish it arbitrarily for any reason. And, have a plan to return home at 65-70 years old. There’s no place like home!
Don't mind them. Ask them to go abroad and interview 2nd and 3rd generation Africans that are actually living in, or have retained the same "family home," that they grew up in. In Nigeria most people can show you the house their great grandfather built in their hometowns and villages.
I would visit Nigeria if I had someone like him to show me around. I travel the world, but it has been a long time since I have been to Africa. Do a podcast and a show about a regular American like me coming to visit, eat, and experiencing the country.
@AuntieCheri It's not fear based, it has more to do with getting the full local experience. When I travel I desire to immerse myself into the culture. I have been to many countries in Africa and have never had a problem.
All villages are not the same. Some have evolved to become big towns. My parents' first country home (compound) is now a residential rental space where non natives now rent because it's easy for them to commute to their work place in nearby bigger cities. It was my Dad's dream to transform his village to a township area and it's taken shape already. I guess where there's no vision...nothing happens...
Well done Confidence on yet another fantastic KK Show. I thoroughly enjoyed this chit chat session with the world renowned Steven Ndukwu. And well done Steven. You've already left a mark on the world of UA-cam. You've shown what Africa and Africans are capable of achieving when we set our minds to it. God bless you.
The igbo style of building in the village will never end. It will be replicated by those who japa. Home is home. Abroad can never be Home. Imagine Nigerians who lived in Libya or Ukraine or even UK, USA or Canada. I for one don't feel at home abroad. Abroad for me is just a place to hustle and make some money. The best place to enjoy the money is back home.
Thanks Steven you are doing a great work when i'm coming to nigeria you will show me around you did a great job to show my South African country to the world Cape town and jorburg even though you did not come to Durban where i live i hope next time you will
Sad conversation with the village talk. Colonial mentality is really still alive. Over 80% of Nigerians that japa actually have plans of coming home to settle. Hopefully one day we start valuing our culture and ways.
Very entertaining and informative discussion. The interviewer does a fantastic job asking very relevant questions and allowing the guest speak. Subscribed.
Ok. So I am Igbo as well and the best thing I have done is have a house in my village. That's the place I have the most peace and that's where I have my best abode. Not luxury. Just a place I can stretch my legs, take tea outside and see the greens. That doesn't stop anyone from traveling the world. Maybe it's old fashioned. Maybe not. So if Steve is doing that part two, maybe he focuses on everyday people and not just the luxury. I watched his video of those Ibo locking up their houses. I also found that maddening but everyday people.... he should try us. Check Ohafia in Abia State. It's a totally different ball game. Like him earlier, I live in Calabar, my kids don't give a hoot about there but it's also a place of rest. So after all the doggedness, you have peace in some spaces.
Bro, Igbo houses and why they are built is a topic that make millionaires. The first time this bloke made a video, it generated millions of views hence anyone who wishes to cash in and boost their youtube viewing will return to the topic. A bit like the name Ojukwu. Every time Nigerian newspapers want to boost circulation, they would emblazon "Ojukwu" in their headline. Igbo population is at least as large as South Africa and Igboland hosts over 10 major cities. Real estate is a thriving business driven not just by rapid urbanization, but also rural house building based on the sacred tradition of maintaining family homestead ad infinitum. Keep theorizing while Igbos keep building, no-stop, the dogs bark but the caravan moves on.
My biggest house by square metre is in the village but it wasn't my first house nor is it the most expensive property I own. Its something you should do after investing not before.
Great information 🔥🔥. Keep in mind when you talking about New York you have New York City and them you have New York State. So point of correction you can find lots of properties with greenery ie ( LONG ISLAND ) NY .
I love this episode and both of your insights particularly Steve mentioning the decongestion issue in our major cities. It will be up to the state government to attract investment and enabling environment in their state for people to come.
Not it is not. Ok yes it is, but after you have made your choice, don't ever come home crying like a baby when they demolish what you built or when you get a quit notice.
Pls if I may ask which part of Nigeria did he want igbos to build their house frist is it the place igbos are welcome or not, i don't know if he knows those village houses in lagos and Abuja is the same houses igbos build in their homes town which is a village houses igbo copy from western world European village houses again did he know there is no real development in lagos and Abuja and eastern region and Nigeria as a whole
There is never a time that Stephen Ndukwe will not speak like someone that has lost it. Lagos never teach am lesson before. There is nothing like village in the east. That village is the same as many places in Lagos.
Naira has appreciated against the dollar countless times Stephen. It will again because its seriously undervalued at the moment and a dream for overseas investors.
NDI IGBO BRING BACK UR KIDS TO LEARN THE ROOTS, CULTURE AND TRADITION OF OUR PEOPLE..A LOST TRIBE CAN NOT GET LOST TWICE...BUILD UR OBIs, DO UR AGWU AND NDI MMIRI THINGS AND THANK ME LATER
Steven Ndukwu, the answer to your question is YES.I live in London for about 2 decades and i can comfortably say that there were times Naira appreciated in value and the pounds or dollars dropped .
You can say one of the most peaceful, but not the most peaceful. SW of Nigeria is like mini Nigeria where all Ethnicity stays,if its not peaceful, they won't come and live/do business there.90% of people who live in SE are Igbos
This kpof-kpof boy said his parents built in village and he’s not into it, that people want to live in Paris Greece Italy 😅😂😅 Remind this boy that people who have money in Europe actually have castle, chateau and mansion in the villages in Europe for peace of mind, relaxation, special invitations, family reunion and retire etc…. Which’s actually exactly what Igbo houses in the village stands for though different culture etc.
2.5 million NAIRA to usd is $1,496. To think that’s what a bank manager makes a month is crazy. Let’s not forget there was once a time when NAIRA was more than the dollar. This is a pure example of otilo.
Guy on which day did you come to Kano? Maybe they were praying somewhere at the time. The population is massive, the ambience is encouraging. Amd there is security here unlike many other Nothern states. Your ideas are great. And great for a place like Kano.
Maybe it’s because of the sheer size of Kano. But a visitor to Kano doesn’t feel the massive 20+ million people, unlike Lagos where almost everywhere is jam packed
I wish Steven explained extensively why putting out his home on Air bnb when he travels being that he's not always around. I would have loved that he gave us the tea as to why it was difficult for him.
Steven has only expressed his views and has said much more wisdom beyond building in the village that we should not lost. With lots of insights from his vast travels, welldone Steven & Confidence 🎉 I just hope listeners don't turn this to a tribal fight. I'm sure he would soon be reported ro his kinsmen, chai. I pity the guy
Super interesting convo with Steve. You know people that have travelled they will give you practical tips. Agreed with you on the building a house in the village and renting one in the city, it just doesn’t make sense. But Culture is a way of life so it’s understandable. Disagree with him talking about moving hqrts of organisations to another states, government don’t need to do that. Government just need to build infrastructure to descongest Lagos and that’s why I hate banger boys on social media supporting state government. States like Ogun State should be really tapping in on the proximity with Lagos but alas priorities is different and stealing money is the order of the day. One thing I always think we Nigerians are missing is we are not close to upper middle income countries talk less of the high income countries like UK, USA etc, we think like that because we travel a lot and we can see few people driving G wagon. We down the line (3rd World country FGS) Steve is doing well ✌️and awesome content from this platform.
A home in the village was brought about by the experiences of the civil war I wonder why this fact is new or foreign to some igbos. During the war many returned from various corners of Nigeria and without homes in their villages life was hard with many c crowding in limited houses it was this experience that made those parents now who were the actual sufferers and also many had these houses taken from them in other parts of Nigeria that experience informed the determination to have a home in villages
Steve i dont think u have been to the east and seen what is happening. The same villages are fast becoming modern cities so please dont try to cheat your self by thinking os wasteful building a house on the village . The igbo vulture says aku rulo which entails taking back wealth to the village where u vome from or the eaat at large. Having a house in the east or village is the pride of the igbo man .
My broda ,Aku ru ulo means means: 1.Giving scholarship to your people 2.Bringing street light, parks, charitable givings, promoting your age grade for good of the community, Giving back or finding a way to solve little problems bothering our people.Mansion in the village only promotes jealousy for those who cant afford your mansion.we need a mind set change of what Aku ru ulo means pls.
@@macabara8819 what you don't know you don't know it stop writing long note if he did not build in the village how will the village become town and city, think about it
It is all very well to be romantic about doing up old houses having never done one before. For those of us who have done several, we know just how temperamental , unpredictable and sometimes a money dump they can be. It is not the same as doing up an almost finished new property. That is why when buying back home, people just want a new house. Even in the UK , with some old properties that have a million rules guarding thier renovation, it is far cheaper in principle only as they would not be allowed to, to knock the whole thing down and build a new place in its stead.
Steve makes sense....people are killing themselves with unnecessary stress just to belong to a certain class; so you see someone who cannot afford rent on the Island, struggle to get 1 year rent to stay in Lekki, then when the rent expires, they cant pay again. Its happening all over Lekki....the estate where a friend of mine stays is half empty, many of the tenants have moved out bcos the rent went up and they cant afford it. Some even moved back to the Mainland. Bottom line cut your coat according to your pocket not your neighbours own Also, the villages and regional towns need to be developed to check the rural urban migration; govt should make it a policy to be siting industries in rural areas so people can stay in their locality to earn a good income. The cities are getting choked up and its not sustainable esp Lagos.... everyone cannot be in Lagos na with such a small landmass....
This is a not an insightful thinking!!! At all. This guy is still young and his vision is perhaps not broad yet. 10 years from now.....I will listen to him... If you say you can't invest in some places because you want to build for investment. It's understandable!!! But, you must define why you invest in those places first!!
Ndi My mama told me I’m igbo..Mr Ndukwu you are still young but let me tell that Igbos started building houses in their villages from lesson learnt during Oso Abiola in 1993.Many Igbos ran back to the East without a house to live in..After the incident many igbo families started building family mansions in their respective villages.Secondly!! Igbos have started developing their villages since they are being told by other tribes as a caricature to go and develop their region.
I think steven didnt explain the security part right. You dont necessarily need a security to open the gate but u need security to patrol the property. Even in upscale environment in the U.S they have securiies that parol in their car. Its to scare the bad guys away. Having a smart estate doesnt mean people cant still break in..
People are building and buying in the East. Awka, Enugu, Asaba, Nnewi, Owerri, and Aba, are profitable real estate investment destinations. This podcast is misconceived by equating building in 'the village ' to the entire real estate market in the east.
Steve Ndkwu, you are 200% wrong for abandoning your culture regarding building in the village. During the Biafran war, people returned to the village with nowhere to live cos they invested all their wealth in the place they were living.
There is nothing bad in building a house or mansion in one's village Steven. If you think you will not live there or you'll just visit briefly and then it will be accumulating dust as you said, why don't you then build your house/mansion and rent it out yearly or use it for short lets while having maybe a private 1 or 2-bedroom flat attached to it for your use whenever you visit? This way you make money from your property even while away. Don't forget; Aku ruo uno, a mara onye kpatara ya. Cheers!
In yorubaland, village is jst a farmland, no one will have money and go and build in his/her village. We build in the nearest town or city and anywhere in yorubaland is home. Why build in my village when I have option of Lagos, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Akure, Ado, Osogbo and Ilorin
Kinda off that you advocate for young africans to aspire to leave africa when many believe it's time africans stay and build their home...you don't need to build a mansion in the village but you can atleast advocate for people to invest in their villages
It will take just a few years from now to realise the cultural differences that drive the building of mansions in the villages. The suggestions in this interview is idea for investment. However, as an igbo person, you will realise the problem with such idea of not building a house in the village as you get older. No one retires to the cities. Igbos retire to the villages and are surrounded by relatives and close to nature, in the absence of nursing homes.
My late grandfather built 2 mansions in our village and no one live there in fact almost all of us r abroad or for those home they in the cities like he said the houses just b collecting dust cuz no ones there
This is what happens when u don't bring ur kids home to know their root..they turn efulefus..we should keep building in teh cities and leave our own places back home..isi o dikwa gi nmma? another Igbo lost to ndi ocha and oke exposure..nzuzu
@@EthosVollmer No serious Igbo man is moving away from developing his inherited land. All my siblings build their mansion in the village and visit home at every festivity. If Steven Ndukwu made such a statement, he is indeed not serious.
I agree with Steve. The idea of building in the East and travelling to the village every December will most likely end in the Generation of our parents. We as a generation want something different and it’s seeing the entire world and not just a village.
It won't end because more people are coming to lagos. It may end with people who were born in Lagos but there are people who born in enugu or Aba that moved to lagos and have a sentimental attachment to their village.
You think single digit interest rate is cheap? 30years single digit sums up to be 3times the cost of your home in this present 7% rate! Understand the numbers!
The issue is tribalism. You build in big cities in Nigeria and then have it demolished by people who will claim you don’t belong there. For me building in my village is a choice and not an option. It’s up to you. It’s mostly people from other tribes who cannot even afford to build a hut who complain about it. Why does it bother you, it’s my money.
Ask your Self Why is Investing in Lagos Fashionable? Three things makes lagos thrive 1 The SEAPORT 2 A former capital Territory 3 the Imograted Population Simple!! Put that in another State & Lagos won't be Lagos!!
Pls there is no real development in lagos the same village houses built in lagos is the same village houses built in igbo land which igbo people copy from developed countries Europe and America and Canada and UK , pls can you list any real development in lagos and Abuja that can stand up with south Africa capital alone
@@judejude9800 he have not seen what real development looks like he should come to hongkong and see what hongkong people are doing in their land this is the place British developed as if the world will end today and hongkong people continue where British stop yet hongkong don't have any thing called natural resources oil and gas or gold but hongkong and British is in the same class as far as real development of any kind or type is concerned, those houses we have it in hongkong but it is in the village you will see it not in the city or town and it is not a new model houses it old western world European village houses, if I may ask did lagos have electricity 247 did lagos have 247 water supply did lagos have 247 gas supply the answer is big NO lagos don't have such things but hongkong have it before i came and hongkong still have it even my 23years in hongkong lights have not been taken or off
Ummm I guess for someone who didn't grow up in Lagos it is ok to not know La campagne Tropicana. For those of us who were born and bred in lagos we knew the place. Even if some people haven't been there, they show it on the TV all the time. The commercial was loud growing up. Tbe commercial even became a game we play where you say that word fast as you can as see I'd you still get the words right not messed up. This is a nice talk overall.
Ah ah, wait wait, wait... Did I just hear Ihiagwa? Ah ah, Steven - You just wanna sweep that over? Ah, ah you are my broda naa... Im from Ihiagwa too... See me trouble O! na na na na na ...
However, my take on real estate is that buying to rent is a very bad way to invest your money! The return is far too low compared to other investments. You are better off investing your money into a high end bar or restaurant. On Lekki, I will not advise anyone to buy property there because Lekki will be totally wiped out by a flood in 50years due to global warming. So the government will do well to BAN any further house building on the Lekki part of Island! Armagaeddon calls! Rent a house to live in and use the balance to start a business and employ people!
Steve, saying naira never come down is a slap on naira, especially comparaing it to rand. U said rand was 20-1$ n last time u went it was 19.5-1. Naira also alwas fluctuate back n forth. So comparing it to a 0.5 decrease in south africa is not a strong point of debate in my own opinion!
the time that someone you know bought that place for 40m, check dollar rate, and what it is now, you will find out that his investment of 40m is the same as the 200m return he is perceiving that he has made off the property.
So Steve wants to travel to other places where the people built with their sweat and hard earned money and still leave his home a village and a desert? Steve pls have some sense. You speak from. 'Small boy' point of view. How can anyone leave their originalhome undeveloped, and develop other places if that person isn't stupid?. This interview is misleading.
he laired it's will not stop, our generation even doing more than our parents,do to how Nigeria is structured, have you asked your self why every village in the east is developing very fast, no real Igbo man has any trust in Nigeria, our parents build houses in their time, but our generation is building mansions, an European's goes vacations just one week also, only those that says my mama say i be Igbo will not build in the village,no matter how much you travel some day you get tired of traveling and like to settle down ,then you will know the meaning of building in the village

Some people want to build a vacation home where they go and vacate to
I concur.
I agree
@JustThinkingAboutIt: Gbam! You hit the nail on the head. Steven is clueless on this specific point. A personal home, no matter how small, should be a priority in one’s village. It is the one location that is guaranteed not to change.
Why can't you guys build in your cities and towns, stop putting houses where it will be valueless
@@raymondjeegbe Vacation houses are not meant for money generation! It's meant for personal gratification and prestige and in the case of us Igbos, heritage!

"People should be allowed to do things according to their wishes"
Contradicts
"People should not listen to this misleading vojce"
I would visit Nigeria if I had someone like him to show me around. I travel the world, but it has been a long time since I have been to Africa. Do a podcast and a show about a regular American like me coming to visit, eat, and experiencing the country.
I went for 28 days by myself with no problems.
For me I will surely build a house in my village but not spending so much like what I'm seeing people build now in the east.

Bro,
Igbo houses and why they are built is a topic that make millionaires.
Home is where the heart is!
If Ndukwu that lives in Nigeria thinks like that means we Nigerians in Diaspora should not buy properties in Nigeria rather where we live.

We down the line (3rd World country FGS)
Steve is doing well ✌️and awesome content from this platform.
Buy a house were you are based FIRST , especially diasporas before the village, the equity on that house can build you a house in the village.
My broda ,Aku ru ulo means means:
1.Giving scholarship to your people
2.Bringing street light, parks, charitable givings, promoting your age grade for good of the community, Giving back or finding a way to solve little problems bothering our people.Mansion in the village only promotes jealousy for those who cant afford your mansion.we need a mind set change of what Aku ru ulo means pls.

Bottom line cut your coat according to your pocket not your neighbours own
Also, the villages and regional towns need to be developed to check the rural urban migration; govt should make it a policy to be siting industries in rural areas so people can stay in their locality to earn a good income.
The cities are getting choked up and its not sustainable esp Lagos.... everyone cannot be in Lagos na with such a small landmass....
Steven is vast❤🎉
😊 me too. Im not building in the village
The villages are slowly becoming cities.
This is a not an insightful thinking!!! At all. This guy is still young and his vision is perhaps not broad yet. 10 years from now.....I will listen to him... If you say you can't invest in some places because you want to build for investment. It's understandable!!! But, you must define why you invest in those places first!!
Your opinion mr man
why are you lot crying in the comment section then if it is "his opinion"
Ndi My mama told me I’m igbo..Mr Ndukwu you are still young but let me tell that Igbos started building houses in their villages from lesson learnt during Oso Abiola in 1993.Many Igbos ran back to the East without a house to live in..After the incident many igbo families started building family mansions in their respective villages.Secondly!! Igbos have started developing their villages since they are being told by other tribes as a caricature to go and develop their region.
I was also one of those that travelled back during Oso Abiola in 1993 while many of our people died on the road.
Don't mind Steven. He is still young.
I think steven didnt explain the security part right. You dont necessarily need a security to open the gate but u need security to patrol the property. Even in upscale environment in the U.S they have securiies that parol in their car. Its to scare the bad guys away. Having a smart estate doesnt mean people cant still break in..
P.S some rstate in nigeria only allow you to hold the land for no more than 2yrs. U must build on it within the two years of owning it.
I think the answer is urban Planning to be honest
Steve if you like build from lagos to republic of chad ,when time come u go learn by force.

Please in my village people do come down from various parts of the world for our Xmass

I agree with Steve. The idea of building in the East and travelling to the village every December will most likely end in the Generation of our parents. We as a generation want something different and it’s seeing the entire world and not just a village.
The cities you're living in were once a village. Go develop your villages and make it standard like the places you're living.
It won't end because more people are coming to lagos. It may end with people who were born in Lagos but there are people who born in enugu or Aba that moved to lagos and have a sentimental attachment to their village.
