Carol. If you consider Brokeback Mountain into the "period" category Carol applies to that too. And I think it's a masterpiece. Both Cate and Rooney did an amazing job.
Correction in number 2 - You mentioned that it's Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche as the doomed couple in English Patient, but that is incorrect. Juliette Binoche actually plays the nurse who is in love with Naveen Andrews. The doomed couple is Ralph Fiennes and Kristen Scott Thomas
"Atonement" broke my heart into a million little pieces. Despite Briony being indirectly responsible for so many lives being ruined, you can't help but wish, like her, that Robbie and Cecelia's story had a happier ending.

The 2005 version of P & P is my all-time favorite romance movie so you got it right. Matthew Macfadyen's achingly vulnerable portrayal of Mr. Darcy was breathtaking.
Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite Jane Austin Novels. Next are Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion. I also loved Ana Karenina, little women and great expectations.
A top 10 list of Jane Eyre adaptations would be nice. Let's face it, they do 1 or 2 new adaptations every decade. Or maybe a list of the top 10 couples to play Rochester and Jane, that might be better.
The book is so beautiful… the story and the writing. i’ve never found a film adaptation to do it justice. I think it would have to be a mini-series with at least three episodes to capture the tale. That said, however, the Juliet Stevenson narration is absolutely beautiful in every way. (She can speak the German, French, sing the songs, read the dialogs and distinguish each character with a stand alone voice. She is perfection as the narrator of what must be a difficult book to read aloud.)
The movie should be a laughing stock to everyone who loves the book. The "holy grale" of the film versions can only be the BBC Mini Series with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle.
I have read the book, watched the movie and watched the mini series and strongly prefer the film. I feel Jennifer Ehle was not a good fit for the part of Elizabeth Bennett. I just could not stand the feel of the mini series and felt it dragged on way too long.
Agreed! What I love about stories like this is the romance and passion all comes from subtle dialogue and expressive looks rather than steamy sex scenes. That subtlety makes it so much more intense IMO. And this is my favorite film version!
Sense and Sensibility is my favorite. I would add - - A Room With a View - The Unbearable Lightness of Being - Wuthering Heights (1939 version) - Enchanted April
I hate how "Belle" keeps flying under the radar. Not only is it an excellent film concerning racism and classism in 18th century Britain, but it's absolutely gorgeous and the chemistry between the two leads is off the charts. Plus, the male lead, Mr. Davinier, has, in my opinion, some of the most swoon-worthy lines put on film. It's a serious must see.
Another case of rewriting history. The concept of ‘racism’ in 18th century Britain is ridiculous because the average Briton wouldn’t have clapped eyes on anyone of another race in their entire lives. There may have been very rare instances of non-whites coming to the island, but the influx only really happened on any scale in the 20th century when people immigrated from other parts of the empire. Yes, we all know a small number of black servants worked in some extremely wealthy houses, but this was absolutely the exception, not the rule.
Genuinely feel like 1999’s “Anna and the King” should be on here. Jodie Fosters chemistry with Chow Yun-Fat is undeniable. And the setting and accuracy to the film is stunning.
Please, do a list of the romantic period mini-series. There are so many good one. Especially, Pride and Prejudice and North and South. Both are beautiful and wonderfully acted.
Becoming Jane should be on this list. Since this movie, Ive had a massive crush on James McAvoy. Atonement and Becoming Jane are both heartbreaking maybe that's why they're close to my heart.
SO glad you differentiated the 1995 version of Persuasion from the horrible 2022 version. Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds have never been better… the music, the directing, the supporting cast and writing ,and cinematography is all spot on. Definitely a top pick.

The English Patient (1996) 20:30 2. Titanic (1997) 20:40 1. Pride and Predjudice (2005) 23:35 Some bleak choices there! Great list! I think you missed Casablanca, though. Other period romances I enjoyed are Ever After, Becoming Jane, Tristan and Isolde, and The Last of the Mohicans.
Perhaps they didn't think Casablanca qualified, since it was set during World War II and it was made... during World War II. So, maybe not a "period film" in the strictest terms?
Brokeback Mountain is a heartbreaking slow burn. Jake and Heath poured their all into their characters and even though you want them to make it work you know it’s only a matter of time.
I think they picked the wrong Pride and Prejudice for #1! The 2005 version with Keira Knightly is good, but it's presented as if the author of the book were Charlotte Bronte, not Jane Austin. The scene is the rain they clipped here is a good example: confessing one's love in a storm is really "high Romantic," which is not Austen's sensibility (play on words intended) at all. She doesn't go in for such matchy-matchy scenes. At #1 I would instead suggest the BBC Pride and Prejudice with Jennifer Ehle from 1995 -- the one that made Colin Firth a major star. Yes, it was made for television and that makes it a 5 1/2 hour movie, but with that time, it is much truer to the book (any 2-hour version has to cut sooo many great scenes) and it is almost perfectly cast (I quibble only with Jane Bennet). If you love romance, Austen, or great adaptations of great books, go watch it and see if you agree!
@@cmm5542 You make a good point, but I still think that considering it a 5 1/2 hour movie helps; the BBC version is true not only to the full narrative of the book (aside from the famous jump in the estate's lake scene), but to the tone of the book as well.
I am SO HAPPY that you listed Far From the Madding Crowd!!! It's one of my favorite movies of all time (and the book is great too) and it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
The country dance in the Kiera Knightley version, and the palpable smell of the unkempt Bennett house were wonders I've never seen before in a film of any kind.
for some reason I don't appreciate most 19th century novels, but usually like a good movie adaptation. I think it's because they were all serialized and payed by the word. it shows. but my favorite I'm sorry, but it's Pride and Prejudice and zombies.
Agree 100% BUT I can see the argument for the 2005 being somewhat more romantic perhaps? Not sure, but I just can't get into 2005's version of a less proud and more shy Darcy, nor either lead actors, hence my deep and abiding love for 1995.
I’m so glad Dangerous Liaisons are on the list. It’s an astoundingly good movie that managed to turn a boring book (I tried to read it so many times! - it’s not the content but the format (exchange of letters) that’s the issue for many) into a hot, steamy and so very satisfying in terms of the timing of the retorts by Malkovich and Glenn Close. I learnt English by watching this movie a million times in high school (I’m French)
so happy to see Pride and Prejudice as number one, it is also the number one in my heart and has been for years! It will take something extreme to change it’s spot
Sense and Sensibility Pride and Prejudice Emma Those are my favourite Jane Austen movies Jane Eyre is another great periodical movie Atonement is so good and tragic as well.
I love Sense and Sensebility, Dr Zivago, Far From The Madding Crowd and Brokeback Mountain. About Half of the list I haven't watched yet. I would add A Room With A View and A Royal Affair to the list.
My favorite romantic period movies are Titanic, Moulin Rouge, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, The Notebook and Dirty Dancing. I like the Kiera Knightly Pride and Prejudice ok but I prefer the Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle 1995 version. I also LOVE Sense and Sensibility! Both Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet were so perfect for their roles. Basically any Jane Austen movie.
I like the 1983 Jane Eyre. Six and a half hours long, you get to relive the whole book. And rated a big 8.0 on IMDB by the fans. Zelah Clarke. Timothy Dalton
Dangerous Liaisons is definitely a gorgeous period film, but... romantic? From what I can recall, this movie has little to no actual romance. My main complaint about the list, however, is my usual one -- recency bias. Aside from "Gone With the Wind" and "Dr. Zhivago," all the movies featured here are from the 80s onward. Some movies I would argue qualify for the list include: Camille (1937), featuring Greta Garbo (her best performance IMO) and Robert Taylor; That Hamilton Woman (1941), with Laurence Olivier as Lord Nelson and Vivien Leigh as Emma Hamilton; Random Harvest (1943), a Ronald Colman/ Greer Garson tearjerker set in the aftermath of World War I; The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), part comedy, part tragedy, with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney at their charismatic best; The African Queen (1951), a romantic comedy set in Africa during World War I, with gold-standard performances by Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. All the same, I love seeing The Age of Innocence, Sense and Sensibility, and the 1995 Persuasion get the credit they deserve.
I would add Wuthering Heights (1939) with Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier. .. right up there with Jane Eyre (2011) Pride and Prejudice (2005) and the BBC miniseries (1995) with Colin Firth he for me was the original Mr. Darcy, Sense and Sensibility, and Persuasion but the 2018 version with Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry Jones (swoon).
DOCTOR ZHIVAGO . HAS SUCH VITAL AND HISTORIC EMPATHY . Julie Christie, Omar SHARIF AND Geraldine Chaplin. truly staggering acting . and there have been many beautiful woman . But JULIE CHRISTIE, BEATY BEYOND BELIEVE . AND HER EYES WHAT CAN ONE SAY UTTER PERFECTION
Atonement was the only movie that has ever made me cry my eyes out! It was utterly heartbreaking. Pride and Prejudice (2005) is probably my favorite movie of all time! Is it the best Austen adaptation? probably not, but is still my personal fav!
I completly agree with the number one. Pride and Prejudice it's a beatiful love story and the movie is well adapted. But I don' agree on a couple of things. First, if you include movies like Brokeback Mountain or Atonement an others from the 20th century, I would've had also included Carol. It's beautiful and touching love story and movie in general. Both Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara had an amazing chemistry, and did an amazing work. And the period where things happen it's a very important subject of the movie. And second, I would've not included Shakespeare In Love. In my opinion, it's one of the most overrated movies ever. But that's only my opinion, It doesn't mean that I'm right
Love this list! So glad you included the OG Persuasion. The Netflix version was such an affront to my senses that I had to watch both the 1995 and the 2007 versions to cleanse my palette. Please do more Austen adaptation videos in 2025! ❤❤❤
Good list, thanks for including Remains of the Day, Atonement and Brokeback Mountain all stunning movies I've watched over and over, though I feel you missed a few, and easily replaced Shakespeare in Love (meh) and Titanic (banal)... Maurice, Room with a View, Carol and the best movie ever made, Wong Kar Wai's In the The Mood For Love (glaring omission)
I’ve seen all but 3 of these!! But Sense & Sensibility is my favorite and Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon is my favorite romantic hero! Also, my mother named me after the heroine of Dr. Zhivago.
My fave is 1995's "Pride and Prejudice". The performances of Jennifer Ehle, Colin Firth, and the rest of that cast, imo, stood head and shoulders above all other film and television productions ever made. p.s.: Samantha Morton's 'Jane Eyre' was so much more believable than Mia Wasikowski's.

"Atonement" broke my heart into a million little pieces. Despite Briony being indirectly responsible for so many lives being ruined, you can't help but wish, like her, that Robbie and Cecelia's story had a happier ending.
That movie is so heartbreaking
The very end of these movies always breaks my heart. To see the human suffering of loss and heartache and pain.
My husband watched it and told me it's so tragic. He liked it a lot though.
I cant bring myself to watch that film again..its so sad.

The 2005 version of P & P is my all-time favorite romance movie so you got it right. Matthew Macfadyen's achingly vulnerable portrayal of Mr. Darcy was breathtaking.
He even made Mr. Darcy's disastrous 1st proposal sound romantic. The way he said, "I love you. Most ardently." would've made me say yes.
He's an incredible actor, a chameleon like Daniel Day Lewis.
The 1995 miniseries is the definitive version, with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle, but it's not a movie, so....
@@shells500tutubo but it's deeeeefinitely better than the 2005 film

"The Last of the Mohicans" is one of the very best period romances of all time.
Oh, yeah. Daniel Day Lewis and Madeleine Stowe lit it up.
yes!
Absolutely agree!
It's more of action drama than romance
The lovers in The English Patient were Ralph Fienes and Kristin Scott Thomas. Juliette Binoche was the nurse who cared for the patient.

Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite Jane Austin Novels. Next are Sense and Sensibility, Emma, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion. I also loved Ana Karenina, little women and great expectations.
Yes to all. I would add Vanity Faire.
Jane Eyre is one of the most beautifully written books I have read. I will watch any movie or series based on it.
A top 10 list of Jane Eyre adaptations would be nice. Let's face it, they do 1 or 2 new adaptations every decade. Or maybe a list of the top 10 couples to play Rochester and Jane, that might be better.
If you are into audio books, Thandie Newton does a fantastic narration of it.

The Guernsey Literary and Potatoe Peel Pie Society could also be in this list
I think I might add Cold Mountain to the list. It already featured many of my favorites
I'm glad Bright Star at least got an honorable mentioned, but Painted Veil should have also been in there. That was a great one
I liked Painted Veil as well.
Cleopatra!! The love on & off stage with Richard & Elizabeth.. mesmerising 😢
Moulin Rouge, Brooklyn, Shakespeare In Love, Sense and Sensibility and Titanic are the best of the best to my heart. ❤
I love the 2011 Jane Eyre but Toby Stephenson made an amazing Mr. Rochester in the 2006 version 😍😍😍
Sense and Sensibility
Pride and Prejudice
Emma
Those are my favourite Jane Austen movies
Jane Eyre is another great periodical movie
Atonement is so good and tragic as well.
yup, Emma is def missing here 😢
Could not agree more that Pride and Prejudice (2005) is by far the number one romantic period film to date!
Jane Eyre 2011 is top 1... best drama period, best photography and art direction, perfect movie
_Titanic_ is undoubtedly the most iconic period piece romance. DiCaprio and Winslet give their all into the characters and it pays off beautifully.
I love Sense and Sensebility, Dr Zivago, Far From The Madding Crowd and Brokeback Mountain. About Half of the list I haven't watched yet. I would add A Room With A View and A Royal Affair to the list.
I love Thomas Hardy's novels made into movies. Ready his poetry sometime....so romantic and tragic
“A Very Long Engagement,” with Audrey Tautou and Gaspard Ulliel. What a film…
I absolutely love jane Eyre the 2011 version is my favorite adaptation ❤
My favorite romantic period movies are Titanic, Moulin Rouge, Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Sensibility, The Notebook and Dirty Dancing. I like the Kiera Knightly Pride and Prejudice ok but I prefer the Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle 1995 version. I also LOVE Sense and Sensibility! Both Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet were so perfect for their roles. Basically any Jane Austen movie.
In "The English Patient," the flashback romance is with Kristin Scott Thomas, not Juliette Binoche.
Remember looking fwd to AGE OF INNOCENCE. Fell asleep in theater.
I like the 1983 Jane Eyre. Six and a half hours long, you get to relive the whole book. And rated a big 8.0 on IMDB by the fans. Zelah Clarke. Timothy Dalton
MacFadyen's declaration of love when he stutters and says" I love, love you" gets me every time...
I also loved Firth's "Mr Darcy " as well .
I sobbed in the movie theater when I watched the English patient …nothing like walking out of a movie theater looking like you came from a funeral 😂
A good movie 🥹🤣
If you are discussing Austen's Persuasion, you must put the 2007 BBC version staring Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones at the top of that list!
Yes yes...in total agreement.
Kiera Knightley is such a Period Film Girl
Juliette Binoche is not the other person in the couple in The English Patient. It's Kristen Scott Thomas
Some movies I would argue qualify for the list include:
Camille (1937), featuring Greta Garbo (her best performance IMO) and Robert Taylor;
That Hamilton Woman (1941), with Laurence Olivier as Lord Nelson and Vivien Leigh as Emma Hamilton;
Random Harvest (1943), a Ronald Colman/ Greer Garson tearjerker set in the aftermath of World War I;
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), part comedy, part tragedy, with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney at their charismatic best;
The African Queen (1951), a romantic comedy set in Africa during World War I, with gold-standard performances by Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn.
All the same, I love seeing The Age of Innocence, Sense and Sensibility, and the 1995 Persuasion get the credit they deserve.
There's a ridiculous remake called Pride and Prejudice and Zombies!
While it's not thought of as a romantic movie per se, I always thought Legends of the Fall was such a beautiful love story
I'm surprised that "A Room With a View" didn't make the cut. One of my favorite movies.
You nailed most of mine and gave me a couple to check out. I have always been a costume romance victim.
Can't believe Maurice isn't on here (but I'm so happy that far from the madding crowd is)
DOCTOR ZHIVAGO .
The BBC version of pride and prejudice is my absolute favourite, Colin firth is Mr Darcy!
AGE OF INNOCENCE WAS EPIC!!!!❤❤❤❤ CAUGHT THE NY CULTURE PERFECTLY👌👌👌❤
Onegin with Ralph Fiennes and Liv Tyler - this movie was soooo good and the costume design was phenomenal!
This looks pretty good!
So many great romantic period movies missing such as
Ever After, Wuthering Heights, Tristan and Isolde, and many others.
Persuasion (1995) excellent choice. This is a wonderful film.
I’ve seen all but 3 of these!! But Sense & Sensibility is my favorite and Alan Rickman as Colonel Brandon is my favorite romantic hero! Also, my mother named me after the heroine of Dr. Zhivago.
Likewise!
I can’t believe Room with a View wasn’t mentioned.
"A Room with a View" I feel is far better than "Howard's End" It should be for sure high on this list!
AHHHH....THE PIANO....SO GREAT!!!!❤👌❤👌
Another addition to the list would be The Cider House Rules ❤
Glad Shakespeare in love is on this list 🥰😍
The best period romance was Belle because it bought attention to a lesser-known part of British history to an international audience.
Thank you!
You forgot.... Wuthering Heights (1992) Juliette Binoche & Ralph Fiennes
My favorite Far from the Madding Crowd was the 1998 with Paloma Baeza, Nathaniel Parker. But Terence Stamp in the 1967 version was an act of God.
Clearly Emma Thompson is the GOAT of period romances
I sobbed like a baby in the theater watching Titanic… so beautiful and heartbreaking 😭😭😭
agree. and glad to say i have seen all of them several times except atonement which is too tragic to watch more than once.
Let’s not forget the amazing film
“In the mood for love”
Should be on the top 3
"The Gone with the Wind" should be #1, it's a real masterpiece.
It's considered too racist today. The old South and slavery
In the English Patient, is not Juliet Binoche the married woman he has the affair with, is Kristin Scott Thomas and Ralph Fiennes the doomed couple.
I also love Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow.
I consider that the best Austen film adaptation of all the ones I've seen so far!
For me, the 2020 Emma is much better. The chemistry between Anya Taylor Joy and Johnny Flynn is great, and the costumes are divine

I liked that one too but hated the nosebleed scene!
Seconded... those two versions are the best, hands down. Ciaran Hinds as Mr. Rochester and Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy = perfection.
The movie Pride and Prejudice couldn't hold a candle to the 6 part series staring Colin Firth.
Bright Star is one of my all time favorite movies hands down. I wish it had made the actual list.
I much prefer the 1995 Pride and Prejudice.
