1995 Pride and Prejudice is a masterpiece. The casting is so impeccable that it’s impossible to imagine a different Mr. Collins, Mr and Mrs Bennet, Lady Catherine, Caroline Bingley, Lizzie or Mr. Darcy. The dialog, music, costumes and settings simply make Austin’s beloved novel spring to life. Well-deserved number one.

Agree. It's like classic literature. With all that this term implies.
First time I've seen 2005 version I was so disappointed. However, after several revisits, it somehow grew on me to the point that I've learned to appreciate it's more organic visuals and less academic, formal approach to story and characters. Although it was repulsive to me at the beginning, I've realized that aesthetic of 2005 version is most probably more accurate to what grooming, hair, clothes and homes looked like at that period. 1995 version offers costume like perfection that is way more appealing, but hardly realistic. The same goes for decorum in private circumstances, for example. They are very different, to be sure, but each version has it's charms. I often go back to both of them.

Oh yeah! 1995 "Pride and Prejudice" - I can rewatch it countless times. I knew the top 2 would be "Sense and Sensibility" and "Pride and Prejudice", because the script, the acting, the costumes, the music - everything is there. Plus, Alan Rickman and Colin Firth make everything better(but not even they could save the "Persuasion" adaptation). You can also see the kind of struggle all women face back then and all the social norms very clearly, which is actually why I love Jennifer Ehle's Lizzie so much. She wasn't exactly a girlboss, she wasn't a rude "notlikeothergirls" person; she still had no trouble with speaking her mind where she wanted to(even in front of lady Catherine), but she never insulted anybody - she still spoke in an appropriate for that time and society manner.

The 2020 Emma adaptation is one of my most favourite films of all time. I thought he slightly surreal and overly stylised art direction as well as the inclusion of some comedic, jaunty moments was a genius way of depicting the absurdity and silliness of the whole situation which is what I think Austen wanted to capture in the original novel, never mind the stunning casting, costume design, soundtrack and photography direction. This is a brilliant film made with consideration of the original novel, instead of previous depictions and adaptations that is often seen in other films and tv shows.

If they had read the books they would understand that it’s actually more about the moral development the characters go through. Also, it’s a loooot more humerous and ironic. The novels don’t take themselves as serious as it’s portrayed in movies

P&P 1995 had the advantage of being a mini-series, more time for completely developing the story and bringing a book to life. Costumes and set-design were spot on.
Emma Thompson created a masterpiece with her adaptation of S&S, developing dialog out of a more narrative novel. Great cast.

You can almost feel the chill, the bleakness, the harshness of the weather, the sea and the oppressive lack of light in the evening soiree - just candles smoldering, flickering light on faces. The ambience of the movie makes it my favorite Austen version. Something powerful about its understated approach.

I like the 2005 P&P version best. I believe it best portrays Lizzie’s sense of fun and personality and the building blocks of her prejudice best. Although the ending was acceptable, it was not as good as it could have been. It did not show the utter elation Darcy had at Elizabeth’s acceptance (finally) of his marriage proposal as portrayed in the book. He is is too serious or reserved. And then Elizabeth totally breaks the mood with “your hands are cold” which is unfortunate putting it mildly, plus then he immediately puts a cold hand to her cheek. I believe they tried to save it by adding the last scene. Overall though I love this version. The worst version deserves as little attention as you gave it, the 1940’s version. Hollywood did a number on it, so much so as to change the story almost unrecognizably.

@@tamerama8289 For me it was the very worst. A travesty in fact. Full of anachronisms - due perhaps to ignorance, but more likely be a reflection of the director’s careless vanity. Why would Lady Catherine pay a formal call on the Bennetts at night when all the family were in bed ! Just so that the director could have lot of fun with a candle-lit scene and everyone rushing about in nightwear - many shots of night-caps and shuffling bare feet. Sutherland was the biggest mistake - or a kind of prank. He was a bad fit for the original character - a deeply formal, anxious man, very conscious of class. . Bennett would never have received a gentleman, at any time, unkempt and unbuttoned. Or in a madly cluttered room that was covered with dust. And what of those squealing piglets running around the house! Never could have happened. Even in ‘real life”. Here was comedy created for the vast target audience in the US, who, in the director’s opinion , could only identify with the Bennetts as farmers struggling to better themselves. But not as members of the very up-tight gentry -a distinct and separate caste who lived a mile away from livestock. So calculated, just like the financially astute miscasting of Sutherland, the ever-grinning ironist.

The well crafted script captures the social subtleties and the key elements of the novel without losing its essence. 1995 mini series will ALWAYS be my #1 of her adaptations. With Emma Thompson's Sense & Sensibility as my #2. I love the movie Clueless as the modern adaptation of Emma.

No love for the 2008 Sense & Sensibility miniseries?!?! It's excellent, underrated, and deserved much more than just a mere shout-out.

Yes! I was scrolling the comments to see if it was mentioned. Wonderful character building and beautiful scenery of the countryside. A highly underrated series!

I agree with you about the 1995 "Pride and Prejudice," and I have to ask: Where did you get that beautiful print? I've downloaded it from UA-cam, purchased special BBC products on DVD and VHS and looked at the print available through Criterion and they are all dark and muddy! But there is a print, and you seem to have access to it, that shows up now and again which is lovely in its clarity and definition! Thank you for the clips!!

I do agree that the best adaptation of Pride and Prejudice was the 1995 A&E with Colin Firth. The best Persuasion was definitely the one with Amanda Root. As for Mansfield Park, none of the ones mentioned were true to the book. The one I like the best was not even mentioned. It was the 1986 adaptation with Silvestra Le Touzel and is so true to the book and portrays Fanny Price as a loyal, loving, faithful person whose greatest strength of character is that she never wavers in her actions concerning what is right. That is to be admired. Fanny Price may not be a favorite Jane Austen character because in the other stories female character personalities are flawed in some way. Even Jane Elliot was persuaded to refuse Wentworth, but Fanny was always constant and respectful. Anyway, my favorite Emma for years was the one with Kate Beckinsdale until the 2022 version came out which is now my favorite. And, yes I agree Beckinsdale's Lady Susan was excellent. Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility will always be my favorite. The characters were so well done though not everything was exactly to book but hers was a film adaptation and some parts of the story had to be left out due to run time. I have not seen Sanditon yet though I have read the book. Northanger Abbey is another I like very much, but there don't seem to be any other versions.

@@maryavronskaya3986 the only thing better in the 1995 version is their Mr. Palmer. Other than that 2008 is clearly superior.

I have loved Jennifer Ehle since the first time I saw the P&P mini series. Jane Austen's work really deserves more than a couple of hours to tell it. I feel this is why the mini series is so loved.

Without a shadow of a doubt, my favorite adaptations are Pride and Prejudice 2005 and Emma 2009. I have recently reread Emma and rewatched the BBC miniseries. Jonny Lee Miller is superb as Mr. Knightley, who, by the way, is my favorite male character of all time.

You are 1000000000000% RIGHT!!! JLM is my Mr. Knightley who is also my favorite Austen hero (and Austen said he was her favorite as well!)
