My Dad's Sister Thelma & 5 brothers all ate comfrey. They grew up with it and they used it for multiple things. Thelma was a very big woman. Any time she got a stomach ache she would eat a comfrey leaf or make tea out of it. The all lived into their 80's & 90's. They all drank homemade beer & home made wine, and whisky sometimes. None of them died of liver problems. I think some people it's not good for and others it's good for. Perhaps comfrey doesn't mix well with all the chemicals they put in foods these days because my Dad's family never ate fast foods a day in their lives. Everything in moderation.

Lately i have been adding powdered comfrey to my morning coffee, 1/8 tsp, and I am telling U its like i have a new almost totally pain free 72 year body! And its so quick to prepare👍 i think the difference is actually getting the plant material into my body.🇺🇸
That's very interesting. As they said in the video, not to ingest comfrey but you take only 1/8 of a teaspoon and it makes you feel fantastic. That is very interesting. Just a small amount ingested for those without liver problems may make a great difference to how they feel.
How long have you been doing that? It’s not the first time I’ve heard people promote ingesting comfrey is making them feel better. It might be fair to say that the short term is true, but the long term…? I would look deeper into it if it were myself who just heard that it was not good for your liver. Had to ask chat..”Recent studies have confirmed that consuming comfrey (Symphytum officinale) internally-whether as tea, powder, or raw-poses significant risks to liver health. Comfrey contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), compounds known for their hepatotoxicity. When ingested, these alkaloids can lead to severe liver damage, including conditions like hepatic veno-occlusive disease, which can progress to cirrhosis and liver failure. CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS Research has demonstrated that PAs are metabolized in the liver into toxic pyrrolic esters, which can bind to DNA and proteins, leading to cellular damage and increasing the risk of liver tumors. BMC BIOINFORMATICS Due to these significant health risks, health authorities in several countries have advised against the internal use of comfrey. For instance, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warnings about the potential for severe liver damage from comfrey ingestion. Given the substantial evidence of its hepatotoxic effects, it is strongly recommended to avoid consuming comfrey internally. If you are considering using comfrey for medicinal purposes, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to explore safer alternatives.” Weedy 👍
@@TheWeedyGarden I am aware of all the data u presented. There are people who have taken the tea everyday for years without problems. I could take Motrin and it has side effects too and can destroy your kidneys in high doses. I think each person needs to investigate then make their own decision and own any consequences if there are any. There's people who never smoke and get lung cancer without secondhand smoke exposure. It's all a crap shoot. Appreciate U taking the time to post all that info. Comfrey as tea tincture or oxymel I have taken for 10+years. Sometimes everyday for weeks and sometimes sporadically. Taking the powder in my coffee about 2 or 3 weeks. I also use the powder to sprinkle on the cooked oatmeal for the chickens during the colder months. Not everyday 1-2 times a week. Ooh a comfrey salve would be a fantastic video. Thanks for jumping into the simple the topic of garden first aid. I had comfrey growing in my garden for a decade and didn’t know what else to do with it other than leave it for the tree and for the pollinators.
Good video Weedy. In the town near us there used to be a small food forest. It had a pond with a straw bale building under construction. Fruit trees berries garlic asparagus rugosa roses and lots of other stuff. There was a huge green house with a chicken coop in the north side of it. An outhouse like none I had ever seen! This is where I first saw comfrey. It was beautiful and a huge patch it was. Never knew the owner. There was a man down the road who took to brush hogging and killed the roses. Someone set fire to the straw bale house. It was pushed into the pond. The greenhouse and outhouse were sold. Little by little the greenhouse has been vandalized. Don't know about the outhouse. A third of the place was sold and apartments were built. The remaining land was split up and bulldozed down to build houses. It's really sad that it was ruined. Picked many meals of asparagus before the apartments went in. The tenants discovered the treasures there. I am sure they miss it too. People like you make me want to do this somewhere. Thank you Weedy.
The money system we're on begets vandalism like this because of the pursuit of money, which is deliberately made scarce! It sounds like it was a wonderful place.
@deniseward002 yes probably a city block or maybe a little bigger. This started out on the outskirts of town. Town grew up around it. No I have never known anything to be written up about it. Don't think many realized what was there.

I loved this video (thanks) and it was timely as two weeks ago I broke a rib in a push bike accident (with a car). So I thought I'd be tough and just strap some comfrey leaves to my rib and wait for the magic to happen. I could only cope with the leaf against my skin for about an hour and the following morning I had the smallest of rashes. I guess it would be better to make a poultice?
Weedy and friends, I have found when making comfrey teas that introducing oxygen keeps the smells at bay and the fertilizing effects to be just as potent as a fermentation method. I use a small aquarium air pump that can be picked up for under ten US dollars. Though I prefer this, I still do smaller batches of fermented teas for diversity.
Yeah…I’ve been thinking about that. I have an aerator in my worm juice for that reason, but I think just leaving it breeds other microbes that are also benificial. I did some tests last year and the results showed that the non aerated brew was better - Okants liked it most? It’s a deep rabbit hole…the whole tea universe 😃
I grew confrey in a bucket, but now it's ready to go into the ground near my fig tree. Question: When breaking up it's roots do I bury these lenght wise or upright before covering the root with earth?
My little 2 month old chick broke her leg, I applied comfrey/Arnica salve and splinted her. She’s only 2 wks out but jumping and bounding around scratching. I do think it’s going to heal rather well.

It does not tolerate heat very well. Mine died last year when it was hot and dry and with very little rainfall. Next time I will put it in the shade to protect it from the heat.
There is no true garden without comfrey, arguably the most versatile, nutrient dense, resilient, super fast growing, whole garden supportive plant there is. One of the few plants you can harvest almost all the leaves and still grows back fast without much signs of stress or shock. I live in a small suburban house and have 6 - 7 comfrey bushes. We were taught to get the Russian Bocking 14 variety which never goes to seed, sometimes comfrey can take over the whole environment, and then you are going to need some serious machines to remove them haha.
I disagree about not ingesting comfrey, this is all false info pushed by big pharma so you don't heal. I chew a leaf or two daily with no issues and making tea with 3 - 4 leaves when I broke my knee helped tremendously. Don't allow information to deter you from nature, nature will teach you yourself if its good for you or not.
It is also important to listen to modern research. Yes it will make you feel better short term, but if you drink the tea and use it too much, it CAN lead to liver issues. Look at one of my other replies
Well said. My Grandma introduced me to comfrey, and she would also drink it with honey, which is actually pretty good. I'd have no idea what it was if she didn't pass on the wisdom.
It's now known to be carcinogenic and hepatotoxic. A lot of the old traditional uses aren't popular anymore because of this, it might help with some problems but creates others. It seems to be the older generations who used to drink it as a medicinal tea.
@@AwesomeFish12 I wonder how prevalent these negative outcomes are. Like rabies, tetanus and many other troubles, they are so rare that nobody knows anyone who've had them. But there may be a slight, slight chance it affects some people differently. Thus we miss out on the benefits because of this slight chance. Though it is good to know and make the choice from being informed.
What country is that? It’s good to hear of people eating it and apparently the First Nation native Americans used to eat it too. I have a book from an Australian herbalist printed in the 90s where she recommended a leaf a day in a smoothie as an anti-aging property. I know everyone has to say not to eat it but I wonder what the actual truth is and what the safe limit is.

Probably best to use other plants that have less potential issues. Remember that your skin is the largest organ in your body and it can absorb substances. And your blood is routed thru your liver. That's how it could impact your liver.

And have you done a controlled study where you also didn't put some on some of your bruises and have the same effect or different effect or various results I mean other than being an anecdotal story..
It does seem to go well in a compost tea, but I find I prefer banana skins, the higher potassium is good for the soil. I might try mixing the two, sounds like a winning combination.
Yess just joined your channel and was binging episodes. And then you release this sweet treasure 🎉❤😊
I grew a couple from seed some years ago, and tbh forgot about them for two years. They where potted and where not watered for that time. This year i rediscovered them, still alive! This plant is unkillable :)
That's great! Any suggestions on varieties? Where do you buy your seed? Thank you
@@thereseboogades8498 I bought them on ebay, some 4 years ago. You have to scarify them to germinate, even so succes rate is low. I don´t know the exact varieties i bought, sorry.
@@thereseboogades8498The wild European one is flowering blue-lilac but there is a cultivated variety flowering white. But the wild one is the more pretty one. 🙂
Thanks so much!@@stephaniegumbel3375
Yes! Comfrey is incredible!! 🌿
Love Comfrey, thanks to Permaculture for the introduction. For a poultice use a mortar & pestle to get the juice or blend. We air dry to make oil for salve. Thanks for another fab video, greetings from Cape Town, SA.
My absolute Love, this plant.
Have probably already propagated 1000 of these.
Can you please make a Video on how you use Vetiver? That's my second Love 😜
Always loved your channel!
Much Love from Portugal 🥰🙏🏼
I just sprained my ankle so am eager to try this out.
Love Love Love Comfrey. I make tincures, oxymels and tea with it. Its a marvelous healer.
CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS
Research has demonstrated that PAs are metabolized in the liver into toxic pyrrolic esters, which can bind to DNA and proteins, leading to cellular damage and increasing the risk of liver tumors.
BMC BIOINFORMATICS
Due to these significant health risks, health authorities in several countries have advised against the internal use of comfrey.
It doesn't grow here year round.
@@deniseward002 1/8 tsp dry and powdered is more then 1/8tsp fresh. But still I don't think it's alot. I just tried it in my coffee on a whim and discovered my arm that had been hurting for 4 months after weed whacking 1/3acre didn't hurt anymore. if I miss a day the pain comes back so it's not healing my arm it's working as a pain medicine in this instance.
@@TheWeedyGardenFrom I understand these test were performed on mice.
I've never ingested mine but there are groups on Facebook that have members claiming it's praise when taken internally.
Omg. Thankyou. Is comfree good for all fruit trees. I have clay soil. So super informative. Thanks Weedy. :)
Thank you for making that so simple and understandable. It makes me want to dig right in
Thank you. I love my comfrey!❤
Ooh a comfrey salve would be a fantastic video. Thanks for jumping into the simple the topic of garden first aid. I had comfrey growing in my garden for a decade and didn’t know what else to do with it other than leave it for the tree and for the pollinators.
Yay! Perfect timing -just renovating the understory of my mini food forest and about to ask a friend for some comfrey cuttings!
Very much enjoy your collaboration videos and can’t wait for one on salves!! ❤
I appreciate this. Best to you both.
Great video! I’ve wanted to grow comfrey, maybe next spring/summer. Looking forward to the salve making video!

@deniseward002 it was.
@@DGibsonxio How big an area was it? Just a house block? It would be interesting to know more about it. Is anything written up about it anywhere?
@deniseward002 yes probably a city block or maybe a little bigger. This started out on the outskirts of town. Town grew up around it. No I have never known anything to be written up about it. Don't think many realized what was there.
@@DGibsonxio Thank you for answering. That's too bad, how good things are not mentioned, so we get the sense that only bad things are which skews our view of things. But that is often what happens because when people do things for no monetary gain, they just fizz out in the course of history.
Great video!!! I grew Comfrey, but I did not know how best to use this plant except for soil improvement.
Thank you both for this video. I am looking forward to seeing you both making the salve.
Comfrey salve also cures small tropical ulcers, nappy rash and it kills warts. It is very useful for severe arthritis of the knees and joints.
I will attempt to get my husband to use it in his arthritic knees. How long before you notice results
Have my comfrey bandage on a busted elbow now while I work - 🤞. Also have found it supercharges an FPJ solution too - had some amazing responses from Broccoli this past winter in particular👍
Excelente documento. Gracias por compartir, sus videos son un maravilloso aprendizaje para las personas que nos estamos iniciando en el mundo natural.
Cheers much to you both for sharing 😊❤
Another amazing video David! Just wow!
Awesome vid - cheers Weedy!
We have boneset in the states that grows native. It was used widely by the tribes
I love your videos Iv watched from the start of your journey and I have learned and incorporated your advice thanks for your quirky take on natural growing and living 😊
Comfrey is great for plants, i use it as a fermented plant extract
I have R19 and where they are planted, they have changed the soil significantly.
Thanks Elle and Weedy
Love this❤
Thank you, great teaching ❤
Thank you for sharing
I was told to use the Boking 14 root which is not invasive
great video!!
Thankyou very useful ❤️❤️
i have drank weak comfrey leaf tea, with wonderful results
What were the results please?
I loved this video (thanks) and it was timely as two weeks ago I broke a rib in a push bike accident (with a car). So I thought I'd be tough and just strap some comfrey leaves to my rib and wait for the magic to happen. I could only cope with the leaf against my skin for about an hour and the following morning I had the smallest of rashes. I guess it would be better to make a poultice?
Love it. Thank you !
Thanks weedy!
Fabulous info, wonder if it heals broken teeth too?
I grew confrey in a bucket, but now it's ready to go into the ground near my fig tree.
Question: When breaking up it's roots do I bury these lenght wise or upright before covering the root with earth?
It doesn't matter, either way,
@@lynnbishop9493 thank you. 😊
My little 2 month old chick broke her leg, I applied comfrey/Arnica salve and splinted her. She’s only 2 wks out but jumping and bounding around scratching. I do think it’s going to heal rather well.
Another fantastic video David! So fun to learn with you & its always great! Can you recommend specific Comfrey varieties? Are some more invasive; im hoping for the benefits without remorse down the road. Nice to see another collaboration with Ellie. A big wave from your fan in Virginia Beach, Virginia, USA 🎉😊
I was looking for one that would spread! Couldn't be any worse than bamboo wisteria and cow itch Vine(orange trumpet) I was told for the last two I needed a backhoe to dig them out. Totally worthless. The bamboo is just about to swallow the house!
I have grown it many years here in Northern VA, it does really spread. The plant will grow larger, but it is mainly replicated by digging up some of the root and replanting it elsewhere.
Woah, that bamboo is taking over! 😮
Bocking 14 does not set seed or spread, lovely plant.
@codyleeser392 that sounds like what I am looking for!
There is a Variety called Russian Comfrey Nr.4 which you can eat and tastes a little like Spinach and has 3% Protein.
That one is also seedless, so it´s not invasive.
Great video.
I've been making this old blokes salve with my Comfrey for years its an easy recipe...may he rest in peace
COMFREY SALVE - STEP BY STEP [HOW TO MAKE IT] (OAG)
It does not tolerate heat very well. Mine died last year when it was hot and dry and with very little rainfall. Next time I will put it in the shade to protect it from the heat.
I have found that it can handle heat if you can keep up the moisture
Nice tips!
My comfrey is flowering so pretty!!! Are the flowers edible?
Thanks for the info!!🙏🌿
I don’t think so
There is no true garden without comfrey, arguably the most versatile, nutrient dense, resilient, super fast growing, whole garden supportive plant there is.
Cool video. Cheers.
8:20 not for internal use. Carcinogenic and damages the liver.
Did you read the study or just repeat what Weedy said?
@@AwesomeFish12 I wonder how prevalent these negative outcomes are. Like rabies, tetanus and many other troubles, they are so rare that nobody knows anyone who've had them. But there may be a slight, slight chance it affects some people differently. Thus we miss out on the benefits because of this slight chance. Though it is good to know and make the choice from being informed.
Love Australia ♥️
Hate spiders 💔
Imagine reaching for you comfrey and finding that big spider 🤯
Comfrey leaves only contain trace amounts of allantoin. The roots contain up to 25 times more.
Very nice ❤❤❤
In my country we use it like spinach its very delicious and gives mashed potatoes a vigrant green colour.
5:13 You mean golf ball storm...😳
I came here through Self sufficient me with Mark. I liked your style mate. Just a small video tip, have the camera between you and the sun not the sun behind your back. You'll get a much better picture without the glare of the sun behind you. Keep up the good work ( the electrical gardening bit can't work but im willing to watch both your future videos on the topic lol )
Thanks 👍 If you are referring to the video at Mark’s place, the sun was not out the day we filmed mate. BTW…you could see that I do have a little experience www.davidtrood.com 🎥👍😁
Check his history.. a professional photographer...
Weedy and Elle, can you please make a MOZZIE SPRAY that works on east coast varieties. 🙏
Lavender oil
@ sadly no this doesn’t work. I wear it everyday and still get bitten even in winter
What about for back pain that has been operated on in 1986 but am still having difficulty getting up off the floor, or ground, or off the bed, or even a low couch or seat? Can comfrey be used as a poulters wrapped in a bandage strapped to the back area??? Would love to know if this can be done seeing that it 'knits bones' back together!!!
Comfrey is edible, mixed with other greens its delicious
Recent research indicates issues with liver over the long term so please be careful about promoting internal use
What a wonderful video!! Thank you ❤❤
Comfort ray 😊
Hi Weedy, so is it not safe to use as a salve for various things if you have a touch of liver disease? Can it really penitrait the liver that way?
Probably best to use other plants that have less potential issues. Remember that your skin is the largest organ in your body and it can absorb substances. And your blood is routed thru your liver. That's how it could impact your liver.
