  • Hi folks and thanks for tuning in. This is part 2 of a 2 part series on how to plaster over and existing brick fireplace. We use integral colored cement plaster finish over two coats of pre mixed scratch and brown coat material. The brick is first wrapped with expanded metal lath using concrete nails and corner aid on all the corners.

get mud on and basic shape let firm up?......thats alot of passes fixing stuff you already did, mess it up, fix again......looks too soft, wouldnt letting it harden up be a lil easier?......

Yes but the owner wants it light like the 4”sample from material yard. My sample was as you explained on how to do it which
is darker because I waited and it burned. Rubbing it has a tendency to burn if wait too long (make it darker). Even though the soft finish as you say rendered the finish lighter, it still wasn’t as bright as the owner wanted, so I went back 4 weeks later and combined a penetrating sealer mixed with a bright white tint to make the finish bright white. I wish I could send you a picture but it is even more white than the video

Plus it’s cement plaster, not interior. So you need to make 2 passes not just one because only 1 heavy pass will sag and probably check

@@AbersonPlastering I know.....its just easier once it stiffens up.....soft is impossible to finish perfect....with any product

We just completed a stucco surround on our gas fireplace and in a few days after using the fireplace we have a bunch of hairline cracks. Is there a certain final skim coat of something we should cover it with to stop this?

It happens to the best of us. Unfortunately you will need to paint with elastomeric paint

My stucco guy had to come back a couple times due to large cracks from window corners. He ended up putting a mesh to prevent in future. The last coat looks good as far as cracks go (so far) but the color is splotchy. What is the best way for him to fix this?

Did he include the mesh and repairs and extra trips in his original bid?? I’m sure he didn’t invent stucco nor build the swaying bulging structure. He went above and beyond the call of duly especially if he was not compensated. Stucco cracks. We all know it

You are right about the carbon, but wrong about the stainless trowel.
