    i took the 3 first episodes with me on a cassette tape, and brought them with me on a vacation to germany, so that i didn't forget japanese while i was gone, and now, having another listen-through, it feels so nostalgic, and even though it was only a few months ago, i can feel the car seat, the big headphones i was using, and the stary sky. this is pretty cool, and i love the podcast, it has helped me very much, and i hope one day to surprise my japanese friend with a basic conversation!

    The way asuka replied
    "Ja, arigato matta ne" sounds so lively and yet cold at the same time. HAHAHHAHA(thinking that alex was crying saying "ja matta kondo ne" and the way she replied is just so cold. It so funny!! HAHAHAH I love it)

    Loved the video, you gave explanations on word in the sentence! But, what does the particle "ni" after the word "taberu" (eat) and "nomu" (drink) used for in the sentence: "ashita isho ni, o-sushi tabe ni ikanai?". The "ni" in "isho ni" is understandable, since it is the way it is :p

    • @Learnjapanesepod
      @Learnjapanesepod  3 роки тому +1

      So when you say TABE NI IKANAI, think of the NI particle as meaning "to". So TABE NI IKANAI = Won't you go TO somewhere and eat with me? Or more naturally, Do you wanna go eat?

    Hi first of all ,Great Podcast.
    I have a question. The words Tabe ne ikanai mean Eat Wont Go(direct translation), so can we not use IKIMASU in place of IKANAI because Tabe ne ikimasu will mean - go eat out, while Tabe ne ikinai means dont eat out.
    Thanks

    • @Learnjapanesepod
      @Learnjapanesepod  4 роки тому +2

      Thanks for listening. Simply put I would remember it like this:
      Tabe ni ikimasu - Let's go out and eat
      Tabe ni ikimasen I'm not going to go out and eat.
      Also you can say it with more casual Japanese:
      Tabe ni iku
      Tabe ni ikanai
      Hope that makes sense!

    Question regarding Japanese social ways...
    I live in Paris and there are very few Japanese people and trying to get in contact with some of them through apps for learning about their culture and language and I've noticed they are kind of introvert or exclusive, I do not know if japaneses are like that in general or there is more of a language barrier since I've never mentioned I speak french and well..; this is Paris

    • @Learnjapanesepod
      @Learnjapanesepod  5 років тому

      To speak in broad generalizations I think on average, Japanese people tend to be a little less expressive and outgoing compared with Europeans and Americans especially in public. In Japan, self restraint and thinking of other before yourself is considered a virtue. Therefore Japanese people tend to be a little less active in communicating and initiate conversation less.
      Of course there are many individual exceptions and I don't want to generalize too much here. However, culture does effect how people communicate and being on the quite side is more common in Japan in my experience.
      Now, if you go drinking with Japanese people, that's another story! :)

    • @garzagarza01
      @garzagarza01 5 років тому +1

      Thank you very much for the quick response, qt this point I really do not have someone else to address my questions so...
      I'll make a quick comparisson between americans and frenchs for after asking about japanese..
      In USA is well seen (normally) if a foreigner tries to speak english in a restaurant while ordering and locals will try to help and explain a little
      In France, Paris in particular, locals do not help and criticise if you try to speak french and they will just tell you change to english, we understand, so you can't practice
      In a japanese restaurant with only japanese employees, would they tend to help me if I try to order in japanese, or do they normally prefer to avoid explaining
      (I know it depends a lot on each person, but on your personal opinion or experience, what do you think?)

      Great question. If you visit Tokyo as a tourist I think some restaurant staff will assume you don't speak any Japanese and will try to speak English to you IF they can. However most staff don't have great English skills so sometimes they can't speak at you in English. And in my experience, Parisians who work in the service industry have great English skills unlike your average waiter in Tokyo.
      Another difference is that I think Japanese people are very appreciative of people who try to learn even a little Japanese. Even if you say "...Kudasai" and "...arigato" that's enough for some Japanese to be impressed. In fact, in my experience they sometimes praise students of the Japanese language a little too much!
      Also, Japanese people tend to be extremely helpful especially if you look like you are in trouble and you don't understand what to do. When I was first learning Japanese, my friends and the service staff were very patient in helping me order food and pointing me to my next destination.
      I hope that answers your question!

    行かない why is it negative past tense?

    • @Learnjapanesepod
      @Learnjapanesepod  6 років тому +4

      行かない is simply negative. It's not past tense. And the reason it is negative is because that is how you say "Won't you go" as in an invitation.

      I use Android, is there any way for me to access and download these podcasts? I see the ones you linked are free, are there more that I can pay for and download in a similar fashion once I'm done with the free ones? I tried navigating through your website which was asking me to sign up for various things and navigate round various pages without getting anywhere. It was quite frustrating.

      Hi there and thanks for listening to the podcast. At this moment there are no paid podcasts right yet but I will let you know when premium podcasts are available.
