The Red Sea is smoking: from the conflict between Israel and Hamas to the US and UK attacks on Houthi positions in Yemen, tensions in the region have skyrocketed.
Now, a new conflict lurks in the Horn of Africa: relations between Ethiopia and Somalia are on the brink. The reason? A territory: the self-proclaimed independent Republic of Somaliland, which, while still a recognized territory of Somalia, has managed to reach a historic agreement with Ethiopia.
Why has Ethiopia approached Somaliland, and can this move really start a new war? Or, on the contrary, is it possible that huge international interests will prevent such a scenario?

Basically a shallow analysis. The international community always refuses to recognize countries achieving independence unless this occurs with a peace treaty from the central government. The US's opposition doesn't arise because of worries about interference with its counter terrorism operation, but because it doesn't want to encourage Russia in creating additional separatist countries on its periphery. China doesn't want an independent Taiwan. Spain doesn't want an independent Catalonia. India doesn't want an independent Kashmir. Iran and Pakistan doesn't want an independent Balochistan, and nobody wants an independent Kurdistan.
Those all have a claim based on ethnicity/religion/history all which are not present here

Question: I've heard almost everything about what Somalia was like post-independence... but what was it like before independence? Was it as chaotic as it was post-independence?

Those areas constitute the somali ethnic territories.
There were wars but it was more stable than now.
Sources from European and Chinese sources also state small amounts of pre-colonial industrialization and multi-story buildings up to 5 stories.

Considering that Somaliland didn't actually want to be the breakaway guy in this, they just wanted a normal country in a land that was batshoit crazy, I think what should be recognized is that Somalia is batshoit crazy. If the world is going to support Somalia as the independent country, then it needs to be with the stipulation that it boots out the terrorists, and adopts the working solution that Somaliland has created.

@@user-zz4xu5wo2c the international community supports a failed state whose failure led its people to piracy over a functioning break away region that could actually do things to stop the piracy because they are concerned that if the failed state fails even harder it could lead to even more piracy in that states waters. Or put another way international community supports status quo of pirates over potential solution to minimize the issue.

When the UN and neighboring states begged Somaliland to stop assailing one of their minor clans, it never listened, hinting to the genocidal signs that comes with statehood already witnessed in nearby South Sudan. But the unruly minor clan specialized in warfare and was so well armed that they beat Somaliland military, that clan had also a large backing from their kinsmen clans in Somalia and Ethiopia which they belong to, thus Somaliland being badly mauled lost 45% of it's territory (check Somali civil war map) including most of it's arms to the clan that now rejoined Somalia, establishing a local administration (Khatumo state) binding with Federal Somalia

My statement was Somaliland is a more functional state than Somalia is that can could likely handle the pirate problem far better than Somalia can because of how much more stable it is but the international community would rather prop up the failed Somalia in hopes that the situation does not get worse than attempt to actually solve the underlying issue. It is more stately , peaceful and developed than Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Niger, Mali, Liberia, the Banana Republics of South America, Yaman, Romania, Moldova, Bulgaria, Serbia, Haiti, Myanmar, the Congo, Central African Republic and others which are States on paper. It's more democratic and transparent than all the African countries, the Latin American countries, the Middle-East countries except Israel, Central Asia countries, China, Pakistan and others. For 63 or more official recognition have made nothing out of the Congo, Niger, Yaman, Liberia, Mali, the Philippines, Myanmar and the Banana Republics of South America and the Caribean

What you miss out is the fact that 60% of Somaliland residents are unionist clans.. on Dec 2022 Somaliland military attacked the civilians of Lascanod, a unionist city in Somaliland which led to the locals tacckling the army and defeating them.

Why not leave Somalia it’s a failed state. Somaliland has its own money, passports, stamps, and army it’s functionally an already independent state in every way but on the world stage. Somaliland Was former British somaliland protectorate since 1884-1960 and Somaliland on 26th June 1960 it gained independence from Great Britain and 35 Nations recognized and Somalia Was Italian colony 1884-1947 and Italy lost it colony since ww2 and UN took control of Somalia to be UN trust territory of Somalia since 1950 to 1960 and Somalia gained independence on 1 July 1960 so both have not have not signed act of union and the union of Somali Republic has dissolved and union is illegal union under international law because both states have signed act of union and the constitution of Somali republic the two countries established but both of them their union is illegal union and somaliland has the right to withdraw from that illegal union just liked Egypt and Syria United when they were two separate states and they established United Arab Republic and they Syria withdrew from that union but both signed act of union So Somalia and somaliland didn't sign act of union and both parliament and governments haven't signed so somaliland has the right to depart just Syria withdraw from union with Egypt when they established United Arab Republic.
