      I was having this conversation with someone today. Normal people can compartmentalise when they’re watching, playing, or reading fiction - they can choose to take what they’re viewing as pure fantasy that takes place in a different world from ours. We can enjoy things that are outside our usual world view because we just take it as make-believe. There’s something seriously wrong with people that can’t do this simple trick and just enjoy things for what they are.

      Pretty sure most of those mistranslations were at least done in good taste/faith back then. Some people also complain about newest Vanilla Ware game being flowered up in middle age English... Japanese is a very basic language though, without a lot of nuances and subtleties afaik... Imho it suits the game and it doesn't entirely change context or concepts of og.
      .
      It's funny though, that the made up English version of Samurai Pizza Cats was way more appreciated than the original... Kinda makes me want to compare.
      But in current year I'd never even watch something where all the dialogue was just made up with total disregard of original design, because we all know it will be shite.

    • @NaoyaYami
      @NaoyaYami 9 місяців тому +4

      @@CommDante Japanese isn't as simple as you think. Which suffixes you use, which characters you decide to write the word down with, and so on do matter and it's very often not easy to translate. It's especially hard when trying to translate very japanese-culture centric works (like Persona or Yakuza series for example). Want an example? Find the difference between someone being addressed as John-sama vs Smith-san (assuming the person is named John Smith). Both are about being respectful and polite but in a different ways. Even today in 2024 we get official localizations that ignore that and go with whatever, literally misrepresenting characters' relationships (and that happens even to the biggest IPs).
      Of course it's another thing when original work is written in a way that avoids those hard-to-translate situations.
      And those bad translations of the past? They were intentionally bad because even less people than today spoke those languages and no one cared about being faithful to the original (unlike today, when being faithful is opposite to woke agenda).
      Also tbh, early Japanese games also did not care about being accurate to western cultures (just look at foreign players names in Japanese sports games on NES xD)

    I think it's weird that no one in the current game dev sphere seems to realize that Lara was supposed to be an edgy 90's anti-hero rather than some noble Wonder Woman type. Lara being absolutely ruthless in pursuit of her goals and damn the consequences was Core Design's Lara Croft. Crystal Dynamics (an American company that was given the IP after Core folded) seems intent on making Lara a heroic character with parental issues...which she really isn't supposed to be.

    Sorry, just felt like I needed to translate the segment.
    It's important to remember that these people will rally against their fictionalised version of historical colonialism that they have made up in their heads, but have no problem enforcing their social "localising" and censoring aspects of other cultures that they decide are unfit to exist in the modern era. Colonialism, after all, is the supplanting of a local culture with an invading one, and they have no problem pushing their own social morals and norms, their culture, on other nations.

    The book is from the UK, and one of the many Beetles it features is a cup racer that somebody had painted to look like the character (along with a little inflatable representation). I got the book pre-UA-cam, and that show never made it across the Atlantic, so I didn’t realize that he was a PARODY of childrens’ television characters. I just assumed that poor little British kids were actually being subjected to this nightmarish pink Barney knockoff. "Recently I played as this Asian female "Sur Li Yuwank" in the new "The Truth Uncoverer" game, probably the first installment in a new franchise. It's not 100% original, definitely, but still feels very fresh and is fun to play. It has really stylish, nice, modern graphics and excellent, fine-tuned controls - and the player is in charge of all the actions all the time. There are some cutscenes, every now and then, but they're not too frequent to bother. There are also epic cinematic segments, one could probably make a movie out of them, frankly. There are ancient, beautifully looking locations, but also wild, unforgiving environments. I like the deep story, making the player immersed into it, you know, as if they were there. I havent' finished it yet, but there were already some hints at supernatural elements - and thanks to superb sounds of ambience, it was sending shivers down my spine. So far, I've encountered dangerous animals being disturbed in their natural habitats, and a bunch of natives being aggressively protective of their religious and cultural idols, while keeping a good eye on the borders of their territories. There are a few more characters I bumped into a few times, maybe they got some hidden agendas.. We'll see. For now, there's a part of a jungle I need to explore to find the entrance to some temple, where I may finally find the second piece of a larger artifact, which was scattered accross the globe a long ago and is said to have some mystical, potentially life-on-Earth-threatening powers.. Well, it's not going to be easy, accomplishing it all by myself, but I believe it's worth it, no matter the personal sacrifices required. As a player, I really like this fresh, a bit quirky, a bit sexy, badass new female character, and I appreciate a very good story. After a long time, I cherish that this game gives me no directional hints and no NPC bother me "via intercom". Not to mention all those clever puzzles and the excellent platforming challenges. I'm also very OK with the just-right amount of combat, though I think I'll try to avoid most of it on my next playthrough, if possible."
    The issue with modern-er TR is that the above (*) is NOT valid anymore, but the crappy results still bear the name of Lara Croft and Tomb Raider. Shame. If I were in charge, I'd do the above, and with some good marketing and fair pricing, I could as well really give birth to a new franchise.
    (*) it's hopefully obvious, that I made it up; I did so as I was writing it, and I believe it's still better than what Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix ever came up with. Yeah, give these idiots free reign, and the next game might as well be a QuickTime-events-driven one "Lara Croft (she/her) and The Emotional Support Group Therapy Sessions".

    I want to say I personally believe tomb raider has colonialist implications, however I think erasing that and trying to pretend Lara is this anti-colonialist hero is just a dumb decision, if they want to address colonisation, then they should do it by keeping Lara an anti-hero.
    I think tomb raider 4 and 5 had the perfect stories for this. Lara was not the hero in any of these games, she is directly responsible for starting the apocalypse in 4 by stealing a precious artifact.
    She also dies at the end of the game - paying the consequences for her actions.

And I do mean people that are both women and "minority" voices. As a fellow Brit also in his mid 30s raised in the 90s back then we believed those kinds of things didnt matter and tried to minimise them. Now its all anyone wants to focus on lol, and as a white man the voices of me and mine are ironically often shouted down.

    13:03 Either that or this Rae person was simply lying about having been asked those questions. The second question in particular sounds made up since it assumes inherent colonialism in Tomb Raider -- something I've never heard of outside of Rae's commentary on it.
    14:38 Rae is clearly obsessed with colonialism to the point where I wonder if a mild form of autism (possibly Asperger's Syndrome) is what's behind this strange way of thinking.
    16:42 I love Eidos Montreal's work on the Deus Ex series, but they really dropped the ball with Shadow of the Tomb Raider's story. First off, Trinity (the villainous organization that took center stage in Rise of the Tomb Raider) was clearly meant to be a Christian extremist organization, yet we learn in Shadow of the Tomb Raider that the leader of Trinity is from... a Mayan tribe? And not in the sense that he left the tribe behind to convert to a corrupted form of Christianity. No, he's definitely still in line with the tribe's beliefs and practices. And it makes NO SENSE. There's also the problem of pacing in the story. After a genuinely great prologue, the pacing falls off a cliff and never recovers. There's no sense of urgency around what is supposedly an impending apocalypse. The story just meanders along half-heartedly until the end.

    Unfortunately, TR does stem from a colonial practice. A British one in this case. However there are so many creative ways to continue the franchise without losing what makes it special.
    Either owning the old narrative and going the antihero route. Or having Lara course corrects. The latter shouldn’t be hard for an archeologist who has massive appreciation to the cultures she’s profiting from. Especially for her, profit is personal gratification/ doing it for sport, not money.
    We live in a much more connected world and change is necessary. It’s just not being done creatively.

  • @Daniel_C_Griffin
    @Daniel_C_Griffin 9 місяців тому

    The thing is, is that aside from TR 2, 4, and Underworld, Lara doesn't steal other real cultures stuff. TR1 is all about Atlantis, and yes she goes to places like Greece, the artifact is Atlantean.
    TR2 is about a Chinese dagger which turns you into a dragon, hardly real.
    TR3 deals with a serious of magical meteorite fragments which can kickstart evolution.
    4 is probably the closest you can get to what the developers are describing as she takes the Amulet of Horus and unleashes Set on the world, but again this is obviously fictitious.
    5 has her taking numerous things like the philosopher's Stone, but again I'm pretty sure that is not real.
    AoD has her dealing with nephilim and the artifacts she retrieves are magical alchemical items.
    Legend she forges Excalibur, which is English so doesn't count, as she is also English.
    Underworld has her retrieve Mjolnir, but like they did with Excalibur it's not specifically Norse, as the legends of the land came after the original as bits are found in Thailand and Mexico.
    So I really don't understand this colonial nonsense. I mean, she fights literal gods like Natla and stops the world being destroyed several times, what about it relevant to real life colonisation?

That's ok, you're entitled to your opinion, but if that is your opinion then you shouldn't be managing the franchise that is built on the concepts you find repulsive.
