Thats why I am still on my 12 year old ps3. I have almost 80 games for it, and a bunch of ps1 and ps2 games, and a lot of the ps3 games still work online, BF3 you can always find full lobbies. I am legitimately worried about the new Elder scrolls and GTA games. I almost dont want to try them when they come out, I am sure they will be butchered.
@@Upsideround Not a good comparison. The 8 track tape market only lasted around 16 years. DVD and DVD ROMs have been around 28 years and are still supported and new hardware still produced today.
All these companies have seen how successful Adobe and Apple have been with The Subscription Model, they're just doing the same. They're ingoring the option of selling the servers, rather then just shutting them down.
Welcome to the party everybody. I figured it out back in the PS3 generation that when games started to require and Internet connection and DLC, the industry was transforming games from being products to being a service. That's when I financially checked out.
This mess started long ago with Steam and Games for Windows Live. In my opinion, this battle is already long lost. These younger generations of kiddos don't have this on their radar and have been brought up to view it as normal.
I absolutely love your content as a whole, but your recent videos taking calculated, well written, thoughtful and intelligent shots at the industry has been nothing short of stellar! It’s voices like yours that need to be heard and listened to more often and not the utter garbage coming from places like IGN, GameSpot, Polygon, etc. Thank you for being the voice of reason! ❤
It's happening with Amazon Prime Video also, a movie I purchased was removed from my library and in its place was the option to buy or rent the same movie again, if game publishers don't want gamers owning a digital copy of the games, then they should stop using the words "buy or purchase" as they clearly mean transfer of currency for property ownership. But even if they went that far, I have no intention of ever renting a game or a movie, a lot of my games since PS3 era are digital downloads, but if I really liked the game, I bought it twice so I have a rather large collection of never opened PS3, PS4 and PS5 game discs.
@@dapperfan44 For me that movie was, "Once upon a time in the west", I bought it inside the Prime Video app on the Fire TV in my house, a month later when I was in the mood for watching it a second time, it was still in purchased videos but asking me to buy or rent it again, so I checked my order history inside Amazon itself just to be sure I hadn't rented it by accident, and there I found that I had indeed bought a copy of the movie but that it was no longer available for viewing, their customer service team were no use either. This is why it's so important that people's digital purchases are treated exactly the same as physical copies and why we must force them to use precise language when selling or renting copies to the public. If you buy it, it's yours, if you rent it, you can use it but it's not yours.
As someone who works in software/IT industry and aware of some of its history, I'd want to act surprised, but unfortunately I can't. Business models of "leasing" things and services have been the norm in business-to-business tech since the mid 20th century and it was a matter of when, not if, that this made its way into business-to-consumer operations. For better and for worse, the internet greatly accelerated that.
the issue here is that game companies still make consumers think they are buying a product... not subscribing to a service which has clear terms of termination like most non game softwares have
This was always going to happen with online only games. Considering how large displays are nowadays, what's so bad about still having a local multiplayer mode on split screen? Even if servers are turned off, you'd still be able to play it with your family or friends so long as the game doesn't need to log in each time you run it.
They mostly phased out split screen multiplayer during the era of PS3 and Xbox 360. Online multiplayer took over because it made more money. Local multiplayer requires one TV, one console, one game and enough controllers. Online multiplayer means each player requires their own TV, console, game and online subscription. They don't want us to have local multiplayer, and gamers supported this decision with their wallets.
You have become my no.1 youtube channel. Last couple of uploads you have done have been stellar. Topics that need to be talked about, to pass down to the younger gamers that this should not be normal comsumer practice and are being used. Not to defend these practices. Expertly written, venomously delivered, not a word wasted. Absolutely love it. Well said.
Unfortunately even back when games were all released physically those games came with a page at the back of the manual that stated that what you were buying was a license to play it. A license that they could revoke at their discretion. Of course back then without the consoles being internet connected that would have been difficult if not impossible. Nowadays though with practically every game needing a patch (or nine) and consoles being internet connected coupled with some games just being the license key on the disc or cart with the rest having to be downloaded it's a more feasible option for them to revoke access now. The biggest reason for all of this is consumers putting up with the companies tactics. Period. The best and easiest way to eliminate customer unfriendly tactics is to stop supporting the companies doing it. The biggest obstacle to this are all the consumers who just shrug their shoulders and put up with it.
France laws protect the consumer because the shops do not treat customers well 😅. « Client is king » is not very often applied in my country. Maybe that’s why we have more laws in favour of the customers to restore a form of balance.
If a game is dependent on having a server functioning or whatever, and one day the official servers are going to go down and thus make the game unplayable, I say that publishers should be good sports and allow users to have their netcode and make their own private/unofficial servers so those that CHOOSE to partake can do so for as long as they like. Just throw out the usual legal jargon about doing so at your own risk, etc. and let any Average Joe run his own server out of his home. Of course, I'm sure that wouldn't happen because the publishers have to have their money, but it's saved other games from obscurity, like old-school Phantasy Star Online. Of course PSO still has single player mode, but it's definitely more fun with a group, and there are a lot of dedicated fans with their own private servers. This whole debacle is a slippery slope, but it highlights some really shady practices in the gaming industry...and as someone who grew up as a gamer kid, I feel like it's definitely worth standing up to companies that want us to just accept that titles are vanishing.

There's a reason that retro emulation portables exploded in popularity as well as collecting retro cartridges and investigating if a game runs offline online before purchasing. Now a days, many games have little to no data on disc (most of them being made by Ubisoft), making physical copies useless even in the long run. Also games with drm or always-online dependency on a server to even get past the press-start screen that turn discs into bookmarkers or dead data on hard drives. There's also the outrage of consoles themselves depending on servers to even run physical discs that CAN run offline because of the greatest trojan horse in the industry (trophies/achievements). I've been complaining about this ever since consoles became online-capable in the ps3/360 era.
😈💩BTW this is EXACTLY what they did to OVERWATCH 😈💩 re-released it online like Fortnite as OVERWATCH 2 and is ONLY way to play it now cause they shut down OVERWATCH! 👹💩👿
A lot of these companies just need to go under at this point. Because they haven't learned anything at all. The ones who head these companies, are so out of touch with people in general.
Jesus, they started killing games nearly a decade ago. I mean, it's nice to see people finally waking up to what's going on, but, wtf took everyone so long?
I was avid gamer and used to buy new consoles normally day of release. I stopped at PS3 because where I live I cannot recieve fibre/broadband Internet and big data DLC/updates killed it for me, so digital download only doesn't interest me whatsoever. These days why would you first buy a game which is technically unfinished then be expected to pay more for extra content let alone the micro transactions ? Also I don't believe in buying media unless you get a physical copy (disc or cartridge). This is because if bought a game then completed it/didn't like, I would want to sell or exchange for something else, this you cannot do with digital copy only. Great vid Lady Decade, your great collection looks more valuable than ever! I now have built myself batocera system with all my old favourites and many many more games to play.
It's bad when even creators like Lady Decade are even getting dragged into the culture war. It never belonged in gaming in the first place. Thank you for speaking up, ma'am.
Thanks for not making this about identity politics. I've not bought a Ubisoft or EA game for at least 20 years. Most big studio games just don't appeal to me anyway but i've actively not bought games from these two companies recently despite being on awesome steam sale prices and games i would have played.
This is happening across all entertainment. When you buy a digital movie from Amazon, you don't get an actual download. You have actually bought a link, that could be revoked at any time.
Lady Decade, you are awesome! Your voice should be one of representation of us all. Both you and your husband are fierce defenders of gamers. Thank you.
I felt a little comfortable buying only single-player games, until Ubisoft removed all the access from Might & Magic X and it's DLC. Thankfully, the backlash made them restore que access, but still, there is no way to prevent this from happening even if you buy physical copies only. After all, the material does decay over time and on more modern consoles they could even block physical mídia with updates, which would always lead to emulation and jailbreaking being, for now, the safest way.
I have a hard time just playing doom eternal on my ps5 with my internet dropping out from so many connected devices be nice to just play a game in single player mode without it being constantly checking if you own the game everything you lose and need to reload the level I end up playing nes or snes most of the time because I load a game I like and it just works.
I see it as redirecting our gaming focus. And it's to prior games not contaminated by DEI pay-to-play practices. The AAA gaming market's days are numbered. Want good and complete games, look to retro games before January 2016. Anything after that date is compromised unless it's coming from certain studios in Japan. XBox is compromised. So is Playstation. Nintendo might be heading that direction. The graphics might not be as good as recent games, but they still look good, they're affordable, and they are complete. The last part is very important. They've been nickel and diming us intentionally.
Much of this is exactly why I haven't purchased any newer-gen systems after PlayStation 2, and don't even bother with all the mobile phone games with their "Gacha" mechanics and eventual disappearance when game companies don't update to a new phone's standards, or just cut server support completely. I'm perfectly happy with my older consoles, cartridges, and discs... for as long as they still work.
They don't have to "support" a game. It already works and functions. Their input is not necessary. They have no business removing access to a game that we own. And you're right, the populace has been conditioned to go along with whatever they want. It is beyond time for people to wake up and stand against this.
They not only make the games unavailable but also unpiratable. We should only support offline games that at the very least allow local backups and actually let you play offline and not the bullshit of always online. Even online ones, once not supported by the publishers should be allowed to be run on private servers.
I have presented my solution to this many times over many channels . We gamers need to get together and create our own games for gamers and we need to create our own system/console . We need to have an exclusive club for people that are passionate about video games so the big wigs can not stick their filthy hands in it .
I believe the future will be on media you have that is physical rather than DRM. If there is NO internet, there are NO games at all. Enjoy it while you can!
I might not be protesting or complaining, but I am educated and is actively avoiding games that require internet connection, so publishers are losing money without knowing it. I hope there are more like me
And this is why I’ve abandoned modern gaming and gone back to the SNES To the Xbox 360 eras of games there is so many good complete games to find out there and you Own them forever!
The ACCC is pronounced A triple C in Australia for the record 😁. They have just recently been upgraded to give them even more power to fine companies for anti consumer and anti competition practices too. I believe with the new powers they are able to prosecute corporations up to 100 million dollars or 50 million pounds now. A mere drop in the ocean for companies like Valve and Microsoft etc though at the end of the day. We do have very robust laws here to protect consumers though. For instance if a game is extremely buggy at launch it can be considered not fit for purpose of sale and the company has to issue a refund. Although this is the law it usually means you need to ask nicely and to be honest I have never had an issue getting a game refund if something actually was broken anyway. It is all just down to how you approach the person you are talking to. I just treat it in the same manner whether it is digital or physical.

This was before EULA's were a thing that the player agreed to.
A long while back my dad bought me a physical copy of flight simulator x for my birthday. A couple years ago i needed to reinstall it. Turns out Microsoft banned my CD key. I called Microsoft directly including their gaming department. Eventually i was forced to sign up to their flight sim forum where i put my case to a forum admin. I was then told my cd key couldn't be unblocked because support had ended. They wouldn't even give me access to the steam version... So in the end it was just easier to pirate it... I would have saved like 10 hours of my time lol
Some of the older PC games in physical format had stopped working because the DRM license expired.
@@diegosilang4823 then my purchase has expired and Microsoft owes my dad a $100 refund...
Just stop buying their games, problem solved. Company closes or learns the lesson.
I stopped buying games over a decade ago and we still ended up here. You've gotta convince everybody else to solve the problem and that isn't happening.
@@gman3901 yeah, we have to do it together or no deal.
This was very well put together!!
Ironically I just watched a Sega Lord X vid the other night where he mentioned Ubisoft ALMOST going under …. And a single game with a single mascot saved them etc. etc. LOL 😅❤
Every time a new AAA game releases these days is an even further reason to get back to retro gaming.
Ubisoft ain't getting any of my money anytime soon, especially now that they have pretty much confirmed this is their business model moving forward.
This business model has been in effect for at least a decade.
Thank you, what an amazing job. I've been playing games all my life except this past year.
I don't have Internet connection or a newer system everything is just very expensive but another aspect of this is the garbage they push out calling them games is pathetic I haven't touched my systems in over a year 😢. Thanks again Lady Decade for a great piece of UA-cam Gold absolutely one of the best episodes ever on the platform. BRAVO 👏
the very companies that brought me joy killed it these past generations and all we have to show for it today overall is microtransactions, overpriced dlc, and low quality gaming
Remember, they need us WAY MORE than we need them...
All we have to do is NOT buy their games and then we win - it's as simple as that.
Go convince everybody to not buy games then.
I think a LOT of us are fed up with the shenanigans going on with the game industry right now, rampant greed, busted products, forced ideology, false advertising, etc. It's time for a revolution.
This is just the beginning, in the future we won't even have physical consoles...
I flat out refuse to purchase any media that isn't available in a physical format.
My brother said the same thing about 8 track tapes and it didn't work out for him either.
@@Upsideround Not a good comparison.
The 8 track tape market only lasted around 16 years. DVD and DVD ROMs have been around 28 years and are still supported and new hardware still produced today.
Same here I'm buying physical copies of DVDs and PS4 games 📀
Yeah, and when Rot comes, let me know how it feels to collect useless plastic
@@LightningSnakeRot hasn’t happened to me yet, and I still own PS 1 games. Taking good care of your things ensures disc rot won’t be a thing.
This is why teaching them about "retro" gaming is so important, at least so they understand the concept of actually owning the things they buy.
I'm stuck in 2014 console-wise, and circa 2016 portable-wise
I was playing mk8 when it went offline 😢
PC wise?
Ubisoft failed to read the fine print on the back of my debit card where I clearly defined transaction to mean a loan paid back with interest.
Final Fight games were pretty good on the Super Nintendo 😊
The era of triple A games needs to end before it kills the gaming industry
Agree with all people saying we should stop buying their games until they realize, without us they are nothing.
Stop buying digital copies
Digital isn’t the problem, the unnecessary control is
It's happening with Amazon Prime Video also, a movie I purchased was removed from my library and in its place was the option to buy or rent the same movie again, if game publishers don't want gamers owning a digital copy of the games, then they should stop using the words "buy or purchase" as they clearly mean transfer of currency for property ownership. But even if they went that far, I have no intention of ever renting a game or a movie, a lot of my games since PS3 era are digital downloads, but if I really liked the game, I bought it twice so I have a rather large collection of never opened PS3, PS4 and PS5 game discs.
I need to record my videos before that happens to mine as well.
Well said.
As long as we keep paying the price they ask...
Preach Lady! We're all tired of our games being ruined by forced woke & progressive politics.
Is that even what this video is about?
@chrischriskidnicky6088 no, this guy is just deranged. It's about buying games and then not being able to play them.

« Client is king » is not very often applied in my country. Maybe that’s why we have more laws in favour of the customers to restore a form of balance.
Okyakusama wa kamisama desu
Nintendo will be the biggest winner of any gaming crash. They were before after the last crash.
Thank you for spreading the stopkillinggames message
Thank you for putting a spotlight on Ross's campaign!

They're finally killing gba online play 😭😭😭
😈💩BTW this is EXACTLY what they did to OVERWATCH 😈💩
re-released it online like Fortnite as OVERWATCH 2 and is ONLY way to play it now cause they shut down OVERWATCH! 👹💩👿
A lot of these companies just need to go under at this point. Because they haven't learned anything at all. The ones who head these companies, are so out of touch with people in general.
I'm glad you're speaking out against this. They're killing our video games for subscriptions, control and evil greed.
Support indy developers and those that produce physical copies ONLY.
Main culprit is the adduction to AAA "live service" micro transaction IPs
Main culprit are gamers for letting them get away with it for so long.
Buy it on physical media, whilst you still can ....
Plot twist: Lady Decade is actually Lydia loves Timelines.
Nah I'm kidding okay this is my first time here on this channel.
Jesus, they started killing games nearly a decade ago. I mean, it's nice to see people finally waking up to what's going on, but, wtf took everyone so long?
Guys, piracy isn’t a solution. If these games were able to be pirated then we wouldn’t even be having this discussion.
Thank god i still play my PS1 and PS2 here
I wish I owned a copy of The Crew so I can file my complaint.
As a ex member of the SSBM community, Nintendo doesn't just stop support, they actively fight their fan base on playing the old games
Thank you for talking about this. We take so much. It’s good to take a stand on something
As a French resident and native, I must salute your effort for this video! And I agree with you... This makes no sense!
Lady Decade, you are awesome! Your voice should be one of representation of us all. Both you and your husband are fierce defenders of gamers. Thank you.
Hopefully we can enact good laws against some of these blatant anti-consumer practices and preserving games.
This is exactly correct! What these big game companies are doing is insane and us (the costumer) paying them to do it is beyond so!!
I love that this chammel goes from "look at this weird niche game from the 90s" to "Corporate greed is bleeding us dry!"
Physical games and retro games are the way forwards, games are crap now a days anyway.
What game is the backgound music from @ 3:22?
Its killing me!
Never mind. I got it! Its the character select theme from Streets of Rage 4.
They have ever bit of business to remove games because consumers all agreed they could with the terms and conditions.
You leverage your ability to have a news announcer voice very well. :-)
The makers of video games it's their fault and just 4 money.
Gamers allowed this by buying games over the last decade or so.
I had to subscribe. This channel is just too good
They not only make the games unavailable but also unpiratable.
We should only support offline games that at the very least allow local backups and actually let you play offline and not the bullshit of always online.
Even online ones, once not supported by the publishers should be allowed to be run on private servers.
That's why I have my own copy of ghost recon wildlands. The last ghost recon I can play off line
I have presented my solution to this many times over many channels . We gamers need to get together and create our own games for gamers and we need to create our own system/console . We need to have an exclusive club for people that are passionate about video games so the big wigs can not stick their filthy hands in it .
Thanks for talking about this.
VR, XR, wearables, the datafication of everything, the metaverse, and the IOT is getting ready to change everything.
I believe the future will be on media you have that is physical rather than DRM. If there is NO internet, there are NO games at all. Enjoy it while you can!
I might not be protesting or complaining, but I am educated and is actively avoiding games that require internet connection, so publishers are losing money without knowing it. I hope there are more like me
We need legislation that makes a digital sale an actual sale and not a license rental, and guarantees permanent ownership for the purchaser.
I never knew I wanted to see Lady Chun Li Decade until now.
And this is why I’ve abandoned modern gaming and gone back to the SNES To the Xbox 360 eras of games there is so many good complete games to find out there and you Own them forever!
This kind of behaviour should be ILLEGAL!
You can never please some, I mean when they say not to buy their product because it wasn’t made for us and we listen, we become ists, phobes
I genuinely think many gamers don't actively accept this, but feel there lacks ways to combat it.
After the Dreamcast and the first Xbox I never felt the same way about videogames anymore...
