I am from Brazil and i can assure that the marketing of zeebo was mostly none. I heard about it just after the servers were shutdown. But i think zeebo was something very important for the tech developing here in Brazil.
Brazilian Double Dragon looks freaking awesome on the Zeebo , I'm more shocked there was no "King of Fighter's" for the Zeebo , every time I see a KOF tournament a guy from Mexico vs some guy from Brazil..
I worked at a department store here in Brazil when the Zeebo was released. I was responsible for the electronics, including videogames consoles, I don't remember ever selling a single unity of Zeebo.
Hi, as Brazillian I can tell you how Tec Toy was a awesome game company. In 90, they bring us Street Fighter 2 to Sega Master System, and a ton PR-BR localized games. Zeebo was years ahead of its time, but without great games
Yeah... but other than having a pretty great graphics for an 8 bit system, the gameplay was pretty bad, even knock off SF clones for NES had a better gameplay, which is a shame, because the Master System should be the definitive SF experience for the 3rd gen era.
The thing is that Zeebo was a failure here in Mexico and they invested a lot on it. Brazil underestimated Mexico regarding the videogame industry here. No one here wanted cheap third-party consoles. Since the 80's and 90's in Mexico, we had official consoles and we grew up with them. We were poor but not that poor to buy a Zeebo. We could at least afford a PS2, Gamecube or Xbox even if we did not have money for the original games so, we would use piracy instead, but no weird unofficial consoles. Nintendo, Sony, Sega and Microsoft were always accessible here in Mexico. Oh yeah, and to us, European plugs look strange xd
Zeebo was not Brazilian, but a Qualcomm project to occupy a market niche in poor countries. This sold almost nothing in Brazil as well, where there were also consoles from Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony officially sold when Zeebo was launched, in addition to the immense accessibility of piracy.
It was the same in the brazilian market. By almost the same price you could by a modded PS2 and play with pirated DVDs that were sold for very cheap. For those with more money the Wii and Xbox 360 also could be easily modded to play pirated games so the Zeebo had no advantage to anyone, a major flop.
19:25 That is also a Brazilian meme. The actress is called Renata Sorrah and this was a scene from a soap opera on Globo TV. "Senhora do Destino" if I not get wrong. Means something like "Destiny Madan" or sort of.
Indeed, as a brazilian gamer I had heard of Zeebo before its launch cause I'm an avid gamer and it was news. But when it comes to mainstream media, there was not much on it. And it was even prior to its release a huge meme in brazilian gaming communities. I can confidently say that releasing a gaming console in Brazil without pirate games during that time was a hard sell to begin with.
At the time, I remember clearly that Tectoy claimed they were not competing with Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft, however, this was a lie. The Zeebo system used to be pretty much the same price as a PS2 (still going strong in Brazil at the time) and with much less games on it, and since you could buy an unlocked PS2 very easily, and having access to pirate games was somehow even cheaper than the ones being offered by Zeebo, people would obviously pay for the system that has more benefits on it, so, no wonder Zeebo failed so bad.
The idea was for Zeebo to have the power of a Playstation 2. Qualcom delayed all deadlines and didn't deliver anywhere near what it promised. There were even rumors of industrial fraud promoted by major competitors in the sector here. It was a pity.
I still wonder why Brazil is so into Sega consoles. If I'm not mistaken, I think the Sega Master System is still popular there. Can anyone from Brazil confirm?
It's still popular among the people who had it back then and retro gamers, but only in those niches. While TecToy tecnically still sells Master Systems they are cheap Plug&Play consoles with some ROMs built-in, some of those even had mobile games bundled together.
Love it. I've heard of the Zeebo, but never saw one before. I would have loved to have heard your opinion of the game play, and overall hand-feel of the system. Did the Zeebo you got not work? It would have been great to see it running.
Due to the failure of the Zeebo in both Brazil and Mexico, plans to release the console in other countries like China, India and Russia were quietly cancelled after the discontinuation of the system in 2011. (17:42)
@lady decade do you and your other half have a online retro games shop ? Because wow how do you get hold of all those games and systems! 😮 Microsoft msx next?
They're from Huevocartoon. They're very popular in Latin America, especially their home country in Mexico. Loads of web animations were made, movies were made...and even product tie-ins too, like their promotion with Vitovo Kids powdered egg.
Every company that is ahead of their time fails. Sega had a VR headset ready to go back in the 90s. But they cancelled it when they seen Nintendos failure Virtual Boy
We are sorry that the Zeebo platform is gone. however, it is unlikely that I or anyone else could acquire the emulator (infuse) as a basis which was created by Tuxality to develop a Zeebo emulator with UI fluent design for Windows 11. it could probably relive the childhood of the Zeebo platform by the emulator's development in the future. Greetings -Rick Yei Becker
I heard about it back in the they more through ye olde goode foruns than their marketing. While Sega was active in the Dreamcast life cycle, Tectoy was selling them, along with Master System, Mega Drive, and some strange vcd-based karaoke machines. When the Dreamcast phased-out, Tectoy lost they main cutting-edge tech provider. I'm happy they at least didn't entered 100% in the zeebo company, instead being a holder/partner, or else they would probably bankrupt.
I wonder what they did with all the unsold consoles. They must be buried somewhere like the et no nes cartridges.I'm Brazilian and I've never seen a Zeebo for sale in any store, not even at the time of launch. Sometimes it seems like this was a widespread delusion and this console never existed
The games were terrible, BREW was so difficult it made people unlearn things just attempting to use it, and the controllers were sad, but I still have a soft sport for this silly device and what it attempted to be. And if nothing else, glowing blue name logo is something I wish more devices had.
I can't even begin to image what brazilian gamers must experience when traveling and seeing current game consoles. Also imagine only having master system, megadrive, zeebo and ps2 in your country in 2023. Crazy world.
Brazilian here. We do have access to PS5, PS4, Swith, XBOX Series S and X, along with PC Gaming and along with PC and mobile gaming. They are all selling in every major department store.
if you don't know how to pronounce place names properly in their respective languages just stick to the English pronunciation and don't create monstrosities like whatever your (inconsistent, different each time) pronunciation of Rio de Janeiro (and with a show-off tone of voice at that) mixing English, German, French and made-up nonsense, cause it's so cringe it's borderline offensive to the viewers, almost physically painful to hear. Please for the love of anything good in the word out there, just DON'T EVER DO SOMETHING LIKE THAT EVER AGAIN ;-; I'm not even Brazilian or Portuguese and it still made me physically curl up in this mental agony this caused.

May not have been the best option but I still think its cool it was a console that Brazil could call its very own 🇧🇷

YES. Time for more Lady Decade videos. I've been binging your content for a while. Keep it coming!
