Thing is with these pixel processor / upscalers is there’s no middle ground between the “barely adequate” $40 casual market and the $300+ “upscaler laboratory for sickos” Retrotink crowd
If you live anywhere with a vibrant Facebook Marketplace scene, you can get a small CRT for free. I was never a CRT true believer until I found one in my garage, but now I’m glad I don’t have to mess with any processors or scalers.
yes, the concept of adding filters is great but is not executed here like it should, where we see it adds contrast and more saturation...it crushes the white tones and thats a no no in my book.
They know gamers get hung up on inconsequential details and will pay money for "the best" experience. Even though much of this can be accomplished with TV adjustments.
I just remembered that I also have one of those and I found it so incredibly useless due to the additional power supply needed that I don't even remember where I put it 😅 Thank you for an honest review of the new models ❤
The biggest problem I ran into with vWii/Wii is my 4k TV has a built-in upscaler that is superior in every way EXCEPT it doesn't anti-alias.. But the mClassic anti-aliasing comes at the cost of a much greater general "softening" of textures and fine details. I would want a device that takes the image all the way to 4k and does as good or better at general upscaling. OR, I want a mode that ONLY anti-aliases, without upscaling, and lets the TV handle everything else..
I use the original MClassic with a PS3 (set to 720p) and a 1440p screen and it's the difference between day and night: it's almost a remaster when using this wonderful hardware which upscales the image in 1440p while magnifying the rendering. It also works for 360 and even the One.
Video game snake oil in my honest opinion. The question should be "does this device increase my enjoyment of playing a game?" The answer is certainly NO in this case. I think these companies are mistaking the difference between their engineers finding enjoyment of tinkering when building and designing these things, versus the enjoyment of end users playing a game on a modern TV. People can definitely get hooked on dialing in subtle differences when building it for themselves, but that doesn't translate well to those who just want to play the games. Having only 3 options is hardly "dialing it in". If they want to make something so people can dial it in, then it should have a bunch of knobs and dials!
@@XboxSpecialistClearly that's the problem. Why haven't they invented a device that adds new colors to the light spectrum? How about something that comes in below ultraviolet? We can't see that anyway, so they could launch it in beta, and nobody would know to complain when it doesn't work. Someone needs to get on this, stat!
I got two of these. One for my original xbox and the other for my dreamcast. I saw years ago you had one on your channel, and I was blown away by the difference. So I thank you for showing me this device.
12:20 literally the ONLY difference I can see is a singular shadow on Crash's ear, that is already difficult to notice, is less visible on the right due to it being ever so slightly brighter, that's literally it, that is the saddest thing I have seen in a while lol
Also notice how the Smash videos get slightly out of sync as it goes on? I think it's adding a frame of lag every once in a while. Not to be expected, but shows it's "doing stuff" LOL
At 12:04 I can see that the colors are a little richer on the right, especially on Crash, and the logo comes through crisper. This still wouldn't sell me on buying an HDMI attachment on top of an HDMI mod/adapter tho, lol.
These sort of products just never made sense to me. Most of small details you will never notice when you are focused playing the game. Reminds me of how Sony was really trying to push the PS5 Pro and how it’s so important you can see those small details in the background in games, like I’m gonna be focusing on that when actually playing the game.
Your mistake with the Crash Bandicoot test is that you were outputing in 1080p, the MClassic needs to receive the image in the game's native resolution or as close as you can get, the results would be much different if you output 360p or 480p. (Since the PS1 changed resolutions constantly and rarely hit 480p I'd try 360p first)
My point is how many people out there with hdmi modded consoles that get almost no benefit with these? My N64 and one of my Dreamcasts are also modded. Same thing.
I appreciate your honest review. And thank you for your work! You are a great positive gaming UA-camr. Quite a few UA-cam channels are like 80% negative.
I bought a mclassic and I don't wanna miss it. The problem for most TVs: they dont have an wqhd-upscaler, so it wont upscale to 4k. You need an internal upscaler. Personally I use it at an Wqhd-Monitor and its WORKING! You can clearly see the difference. So for me, its fine. Specially if I use it for switch, ps3 and even older consoles.
I really like the visuals Metal Jesus used in this video. While he's having trouble telling the difference I can see it pretty well. However, I think his point about noticing this while in motion might negate the benefits. I think this video is a good companion video to the one Adam Koralik did. I think MJ poses the right question and Adam's video provides an answer.
Personally I've considered these in the past because I was looking for a way to get a constant 1080p out of an HDMI signal. My Viture XR glasses require a 1080p signal to function so if I wanted to do something like play PS3 with them I'd need a way to manipulate the signal coming out of the box to always output at a consistent 1080p. If it drops below 1080p (as PS3 games often do) then the glasses freak out and won't work properly. There may be a better way to do this, though.
Bought the original one a few years ago, it worked well with my Dreamcast and Kaico HDMI adapter upscaling to 1080p. Did notice a nicer image when connected to my Switch. Once I got ahold of a Retrotink 5x Pro the following year, I haven't used it since and completely forgot about it. 17:44
look the comparison with "night mode" turned on, then you'll see the difference enchanced. televisions are very differenty and you'll want solution to get the color mode right. In my eyes the blue looks like crap, green ok .. I work a lot on computer with 6 different monitors every day so my eyes are really sensitive to it and the little changes to the blue tint. Hope my rambling post makes sense :D
I've always seen these as a solution in search of a problem. The mClassic range just seems to smear the image with some kind of bilinear filter while adjusting the contrast and saturation. As you say, if someone can get their console to HDMI, they likely already have a better solution, such as an Open Source Scan Converter, GBS-Control or RetroTink. And that customer base doesn't want smears, they typically want pixel perfect.
13:10 there's a clear difference in texture quality. Look at the tree. In the very next game you point out the sky saying it's cleaned up, but I barely notice any change at all.
Honestly from what I can see it looks like a lotta these modes really just end up LOSING information and clarity, both in the Whites/Highlights and the Blacks/Shadows. The kirby Switch footage was losing a LOT of high-end gray information and the Crash Bandicoot PS1 footage was losing a BUNCH in the low-end gray/black info. Funnily enough, in an attempt to “improve” the visual quality, they just end up making it much, much worse. DameDevs spend a lot of time chosing hues, brightness, and saturation for a reason! Often through a deep understanding of the video signals involved, which in contrast (pun very much intended) Marseille does not seem to have.
I have the mClassic. It was good for up-rezing 320p, 480p, 720p or 1080p up 1440p. Great for my PS3 and PS4 in to a 1440p monitor. It provides antialiasing as well and tends to boost the colors a bit. Did a good job improving slightly improving the video to my Playstation VR headset as well. Nice gadget is used the right way.
In the Burnout 3 it did make the car look a little better but not to the point where I would drop $100 for something like that. I don't understand why any developer is using anything other than USB-C for power.
They need to get all of these features in a single device. I had the original version. I enjoyed it, but i experienced a lot of screen tearing. I was unable to resolve the issue and had to return it. I hope the company takes MJR's recommendations.
Best results i got with mclassic was with 360 set to 720p. I didnt notice as much improvement with 6th gen consoles. I noticed less of an improvement if source set to 1080p
This was a chance for them to use AI upscaling to 4k or at least 2k like their very own dlss, fsr, pssr with a custom menu for tweeking like the gchd menu. 😢
I mean what would they actually put on the device in terms of hardware to achieve that in a reasonable price? It would just end up being a far worse retrotink
Like I said on John Hancock's video, I never really saw the point of these. They kind of seem like a waste of money, as you should be able to get _very_ close, just by adjusting your TV/monitor's contrast, saturation, brightness levels, the aspect ratio, etc. Smart TVs these days already have different picture modes/profiles built in too, so you just have to play around with all these settings and see what looks the best... You'll save yourself a lot of coin. 🤷 I guess if your TV/monitor somehow doesn't have any of these options or settings, then i can see a use for the Mclassic dongles, but otherwise, yeah, I don't see the point. To each their own though! 😉
I was pretty jazzed up for the Retro mclassic, but the color saturation options left me confused and ultimately I've not purchased yet. I do have the OG mClassic and honestly it cleans things up VERY nicely in my experience. (usually use it on snes thru wii. 64 and GC seem the best. Modded Wii is very crisp) I guess retro's default mode still does the same as the OG's retro mode so that's cool. I was looking to have another mclassic to not have to move it from the wii over to the retro setup in another room, but $70+ for that is a bit much. It would be cool to have some configuration and/or firmware options this time as well. Like someone else posted there doesn't seem to be a good middle ground between garbage and high-end retroTink/OSSC. Maybe I should have just gotten a tink 2x pro by the time i bought the mclassic and other items. lol
IMO the m classic is only necessary for the switch when you’re playing on a screen 65+ inches. I can definitely see the difference when it’s not being used. I love it, other than that I don’t think it’s needed if the screen your playing on is 65in or below
I bought one of these when they first came out a couple of years ago. I use it on my homemade android based pinball machine to sharpen up the graphics.
If they added a usb port and made the programing opensource so people could edit the video processing and upload their own profiles for people to download and add to their device that'd be a pretty kl idea
The original mClassic is a good device, I put all my consoles 7th gen and older through it. I think these new models are just an attempt to get people to buy extra devices they don't need. Just stick to the original for everything.
I could write paragraphs about each one.. but here's my quick take. (From someone who is VERY picky about their tv and settings) Comments are all of course from just seeing your capture setup on my specific screen, so take that as it is.. Cruis'n- Where's my brightness? and the contrast has gone too far.. it makes the blue flames look muddled.. Also looks like some color shifting.. no thanks. Kirby, green led. Interesting. For this type of game I can spot AA, Contrast, and Sharpening. it's actually kinda neat BUT the whites are blown out slightly. Shadow detail is being lost, and that's no bueno. Jet set- blue led- Saturation is too far, if it was like 30+% less it could be .. something. Crash- I DO see a diff! The orange on crash and the wood sigh highlights are different shades (slightly). PLUS.. Look Right Under where his eyes meet when he looks around, Direct has a shadow there, and mclassic loses that shadow. Detail loss means i'm out. GC/PS2- The AA is more noticeable, modes do seem more similar, to each their own on this one. For PS2 its slightly more stable, but not enough for me to really care. For Genesis.. the colors are bad across the board to me eyes.
so like the only way its makes sense to me is, like the signal out going to a digital tv and a crt tv is is displayed different and its trying to make a digital tv display it more like how a crt would, and it assumes it should be darker and more saturated. also maybe its trying to make it more resemble what it looks like on a "high end" crt since iv heard people talk about how much saturation and vivid some crts were granted I have no idea how retro games looked on a crt and what crt is the right crt. since I only really remember playing my xbox 360 in some random crt that tbh probably want the best Not saying it isnt worthless, its just thats the only way I can wrap my head around things. also im a sucker for saturation and I feel like for some games like sonic it didnt make it look more correct but more like how we remember it. the dirt was more yellow or a light orange in the "correct" side but I remember it being more orange or saturated and like remasters and stuff seem to make it more orange and saturated Like what even is the standard for how it should look? like it was on a run of the mill crt the average person owned at the time or some super high end one that over-saturated the colors but was beautifully vivid?
Thanks for the video, I think you just saved me like $80 or whatever it costs. I was interested but I agree with you, the price isn't worth these results
Yeah, I still have my original mClassic and I don't think these new ones isn't for me but it's an awesome video to understand about these new mClassics.
As a lover of games, not hardware, I honestly can't see the point of those enhancers at all haha just take Jet Set Radio, look how it looks on Redream, absolutely astounding, like a modern game
On the Switch, it is very deep into diminishing returns territory. Upscaling/enhancing is hardly a single solution fits all use cases. On a lot of games anti-aliasing for the entire screen ends up looking like you applied a very thin coat of vaseline to the screen. I can already accomplish that for free by taking my glasses off... Can't recommend the effect.
Been gaming for 35 years. None of the myriad "smoothing" options have EVER looked good to me. Or rather, they come with too many drawbacks. The best way to make old games look good on a big LCD is CRT emulation. Mask the imperfections in the same way a CRT did; it looks so much better. Never had any success trying to "enhance" anything
I want an upscaler for my Nintendo 64 because I don't have a CRT TV anymore. That's the only thing I think these upscalers are good for, older game consoles that don't work so good on HD TV's. Should I get one for my N64?
Just dont mention 1 or 2 to the eye doctor, or they just might start using "this" one or "that" one. Grammatically it becomes a choice of errors because they are both "this" one at some point AND "that" one at another. losing all static reference that 1 and 2 set up. At the end you just have a set of glasses that give you double vision bc you over thought if this one is now that one once you changed 😂 true story
good video i never understood the point of this thing and was wondering why so many people were so convinced that this piece of garbage improves the picture quality

It's definitely doing stuff. I don't think that anyone can deny that

Yea, I'd rather save my money for a RetroTink 4K at that point.
I've been very happy with the RetroTink 2X Pro in the range of $100-140. I see MJR has one at around 17:30 in the video.

"So...what would you say YA DO here?"

so like the only way its makes sense to me is, like the signal out going to a digital tv and a crt tv is is displayed different and its trying to make a digital tv display it more like how a crt would, and it assumes it should be darker and more saturated.
also maybe its trying to make it more resemble what it looks like on a "high end" crt since iv heard people talk about how much saturation and vivid some crts were
granted I have no idea how retro games looked on a crt and what crt is the right crt. since I only really remember playing my xbox 360 in some random crt that tbh probably want the best
Not saying it isnt worthless, its just thats the only way I can wrap my head around things.
also im a sucker for saturation and I feel like for some games like sonic it didnt make it look more correct but more like how we remember it. the dirt was more yellow or a light orange in the "correct" side but I remember it being more orange or saturated and like remasters and stuff seem to make it more orange and saturated
Like what even is the standard for how it should look? like it was on a run of the mill crt the average person owned at the time or some super high end one that over-saturated the colors but was beautifully vivid?
I think I’ll stick to my CRT picture options. 😊
Think of those people who want to play the games "exactly as they were originally", so they buy CRTs, they must be having rage puppies at this idea!
I own the original one, and tbh it seems to do a much better job than these new ones
It upscales and makes old games look better 😁
Thanks for the video, I think you just saved me like $80 or whatever it costs. I was interested but I agree with you, the price isn't worth these results
If you squint you can see a difference!
Is there nostalgia for RF modulators? Maybe that's their niche target market...
Nice Spirit Adrift shirt! 🤘🏻
Yeah, I still have my original mClassic and I don't think these new ones isn't for me but it's an awesome video to understand about these new mClassics.
Thank You for info!
Pro video colorist chiming in - On Crash there's a tint shift- NOT GOOD!
The red one is pretty good I use it often especially with the switch
As a lover of games, not hardware, I honestly can't see the point of those enhancers at all haha
just take Jet Set Radio, look how it looks on Redream, absolutely astounding, like a modern game
Is it just me or does the sky on Burnout 3 look better than I've seen the sky look in years?
The monster cables of our time
I can just go into my tv settings and turn color saturation up... for free.
Im too early so hi Mjr hope you are having a great day and may you also have a wondeful new year !
You have to switch the switch output to 720p
Wouldn't that just give you a bit more game performance? The end result is still 1440p
Pumping up the saturation/contrast on your TV costs you nothing. The retro mode is aweful.
I'm good with my two OG ones.
You want a meme? It’s basically The Office’s « They’re the same picture » 😂
Have you tried the hyperkin can cables for the classic consoles
Been gaming for 35 years. None of the myriad "smoothing" options have EVER looked good to me. Or rather, they come with too many drawbacks. The best way to make old games look good on a big LCD is CRT emulation. Mask the imperfections in the same way a CRT did; it looks so much better. Never had any success trying to "enhance" anything
HDCP is why these new versions exist.
Another tiny step in this modern era of diminishing returns.
That makes two of us.
There's no way marseille tested these things internally before production, and didn't see that it does absolutely nothing.
This is the "Its the same picture" meme.
Would you like to buy some magic beans ?!
good video i never understood the point of this thing and was wondering why so many people were so convinced that this piece of garbage improves the picture quality
