Do you think that the Aqua Terra is Underrated today (compared to its more mainstream sporty siblings)?
And If you could only choose one Omega to add to your collection, which would it be and why? 😉

Depends on how you mean underrated, in the WIS world yes, it's overshadowed by OP or datejust if you ask me, but by omega fanboys I think it's considered as a classic, one thing I can't wrap my head around it that AT costs more than the big brother Seamaster 300m tho

The Aqua Terra is not the most underrated Omega watch. There's enough interest in the Aqua Terra out there and a fair number of articles and videos about the Aqua Terra. The most underrated Omega watch is the DeVille Tresor - Omega's dress watch. These are high quality dress watches that are seldom written and talked about. Even most Omega fans ignore it and care more about the Speedmasters series and the Seamaster series (which the Aqua Terra is a part of). The Globemaster gets a heck of a lot more attention. The Railmaster gets some. The Constellation (nee Manhattan) is disliked by Western watch enthusiasts who ignore it like it never exists but it has a strong following in East Asia. The Constellation is, I understand, probably the biggest selling series for Omega. The DeVilles? Completely ignored because they are the standard watches made by Omega but parked within it are the Tresor dress watches for men - these are the true underrated Omega watches.

Definitely one of Omega's more underrated models.
Imo, the Railmasters are the real "Underrated" Omegas. Most other Omegas - especially ones with the Speedy or Seamaster branding get enough attention but the Railmaster is rarely ever spoken about and I think that's a shame.

Glad you made a video about the "step brother" in the Seamaster collection. People seem to criticize Omega for giving us so many choices in this model, but this worked out perfectly for me. I was certain from looking at UA-cam that I wanted the 38mm black dial. Went to try one on right after lock down and found it wasn't for me...not sure why. It just didn't feel right. Maybe it was the timing. Long story short finally bought the silver/white 38mm with the horizontal teak deck. One reason I love it so much is that it is equally handsome on the OEM leather and the bracelet...which brings us to your question about then new releases. I haven't seen them in person and I wonder about that very sheer cut date window. But I think i prefer the new bracelet style. Do you think they should have Aqua Terra as a separate entity from Seamaster?

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  2 роки тому +1

I'm so glad you landed one eventually Michael (speaking of which, I'm still hunting for an ideal white dial watch) But you're so right, Omega's in general have that level of versatility to their arrangements that makes strap swapping a breeze. Nothing on the models ever look out of place. How deep does that date window look? If I had one crit, I'd suggest a frame around it (as always) How can they make such a gorgeous frame for the ladies sizes and not reciprocate with the larger sizes? And yes, I'd make the Aqua Terra its own thing BUT it's been a "Seamaster" for twenty years now 😆

The Omega Boutique here in Northern Virginia doesn't expect to have them until next month. I truly want to see them first, and then decide if it is the squirrel I should chase. My instincts still remain to target the CK 859.

Gotta say, Omega will always be at the top of my list (it's almost genetics at this point) And honestly Reed, that CK859 is going to be a banger and well worth the wait. It's unlike anything else out there. A real callback to those pre-war models with incredible watchmaking. Nothing like these "mass produced" pieces in comparison 😉

  • @Konsaliki
    @Konsaliki 2 роки тому +4

I just hope they don't get rid of the teak deck dial. It's unobtrusive when it needs to be, but offers detail when you look for it. It also provides subtle cohesiveness, gently tying the dial together. The sunburst on the other hand makes elements like the date window float on the dial, conveying a sense of disconnect in comparison.
Oh, yeah, and of course: thinner and micro adjust, please. As always.

    • @ID-Guy
      @ID-Guy  2 роки тому +2

Man, they could explore with so many textures to these dials too. But I agree, the teak deck has always been that modern mainstay... it's like the waves on the SMP, it would be a shame to see them go. Weird that these sunburst models come across as far "tamer" Aqua Terra's too. Just goes to show how much of a difference the dial makes 😉 (good points on the cases and adjustments too)

Hi Mr Guy, thank you for another thoughtful video. The Aqua Terra is probably my favourite Omega range. I particularly value the time zone function on the 41mm models (89XX movements) and as you say, the movements are first class in every way. It seems a shame to me that the 38mm versions miss out on the time zone function, although I do like the sunburst dials. Collectively, the Aqua Terra range is in a class of its own. I didn't say enough about your new Tudor last time: this watch is an instant classic. It has heritage, a no compromise military specification and a first class movement. It is greater than the sum of its parts. You bought well. Have a good weekend. 😀

Thank you for this wonderful comment Robert. Imagine if Omega doubled down with a GMT variation of these AT's? That would such an excellent proposition... seeing a model with a white dial and a GMT comp would be a really compelling buy for me. I reckon the main issue with the AT is it manages to be that all-rounder that rides the line effortlessly between Utility and Elegance (I'd argue better than something like a Datejust) but still comes across as modern. Most enthusiasts want to check the box with watches that fill a niche instead of going after a "one watch" 😆 Ah, and thank you about the FXD comment. It's a real gem. I'd recommend it to everyone honestly... if you have the chance to get one, do it and never regret it 😉 Have a super weekend Robert!

I’m not blown away by the Aqua Terra (apart from the lovely World Timer). I guess they are going for the Rolex OP market. The new colour range definitely hints at that…… and I like it. The coloured dial craze has been taken up by many brands (Doxa, Rolex, Oris, Omega, CW, etc) and is obviously fashionable and selling.
I don’t know what identity the Aqua Terra truly has as a Watch. Diver, Dress Watch, Engineers Watch, Pilots Watch or just a pallet for Omega to play with and try out different versions? New materials, Different looks and functions.
My ideal Omega at present would be a Railmaster ‘57. Perfect proportions, curved crystal to match the caseback, totally legible quarter Arabic numeral dial, lovely broad arrow hands. Everything about that Watch is so well designed. Plus I love the Engineering heritage to the Watch. I think the Railmaster range in general is totally passed by many shoppers. They are extremely underrated and pretty well priced.

I especially agree you can see the DNA of this watch in early Seamasters and the watch successfully retains that simple design on a modern timepiece. I actually sold my seamaster 300M (to thick) to purchase the white (silver) dial with orange second hand and orange seamaster script. The size is perfect for me and the jumping hour movement easily allows for adjustments across time zones when traveling. As odd as this sounds, this watch inspires me to be better and do more.

Based on what I've seen from the horology/watch sphere on UA-cam, I'd say the Aqua Terra gets its healthy share of admirers and fans...not at all underrated. I'm a sucker for sunburst dials so seeing Omega give the AT the same treatment in multiple colors is a definite win.
Which single Omega model would I add for my collection? Months ago, when I saw an in-depth video you made of the Seamaster 300, that got me thinking: Have this on my wrist or a Submariner? Design-wise the Sub is timeless; often imitated, never duplicated. But the 300 has its own classic timelessness that has grown on me over time.
I like my watches that are under the radar, not attracting unnecessary attention, but more than capable to be worn anywhere, any occasion. The 300 fits the bill. I'd love to have a Speedy but I'm more than happy to time myself grilling cheese sandwiches using the 300's diver bezel 😀.

Got my SM300 back from service/repair ( broken crown, £485 & 4 months) had it on my timegrapher & running +0 after 3 days on wrist. Needless to say I'm dead chuffed .
    Cheers 👍🏻👍🏻

I own a blue 39'5 horizontal teak deck with the 3'o clock date. It is a keeper for me. I especially like the jumping hour date change mechanism which make it a great traveller's watch. I forgive rather than welcome the new bright dials but so many brands jumped on this bandwagon after you know who. My Nomos Club Neomatik SignalRot dial was there before Rolex, at least in modern times.

Thanks for the excellent commentary. I always enjoy listening to your insights on watch design, and found your discussion of the 39 mm vs 36 mm Rolex Explorer in a previous video especially helpful when purchasing mine (I went for the new 36 mm). My first ever luxury watch purchase was a blue-dial Omega Aqua Terra GMT, which I still enjoy wearing. On my AT, the lines of the "teak deck" dial run "vertically", up from 6 to 12 as I look at the watch. Subsequently, Omega rotated the "deck" by 90 degrees so that the lines in later models run "horizontally", from 9 to 3 across the dial. I just wonder whether, from a designer's perspective, you have a preference as to the orientation of the teak deck design ("vertical" or "horizontal"?). I know which I prefer (!), but I would be interested to hear your view.

I like the Aqua Terra; I try one on every time I'm able to do so. It's an outstanding watch. And I want to love Omega; I really do. They just... they come so close for me on so many watches, but miss on something important (again, to me). In the case of the AQ, and as with most of their watches, I really wish they didn't put AR coating on the top of the crystal. It also feels a bit too contemporary in styling for my vintage sensibilities. Again, though... I'm drawn to it regardless.

The Omega Aqua Terra is a simple straightforward sports watch that could be found on a leisurely hike, weekend camping trip to a day at the beach. It’s uncluttered dial with the date at the 6 position lends itself to be a watch that’s easily read with the flick of the wrist and yet looks great. And yes, this watch would look fantastic with a suit and tie to jeans and a t-shirt. Just because a watch is a tool we all use doesn’t mean it has to be boring and not communicate who we are.

I recently (2 weeks ago) purchased the current generation white dial 38mm AT after seeing these new models. I think the only upgrade they've made is the bracelet. The dials and dial finishing unfortunately feel a quick and easy way to try and recoupe funds they've missed out on due to their misfortunes such as with the delay of the Bond movie, Olympics that was a quiet afair. Basically Covid related issues. If you really look at the dials and compare them, there's no teak pattern, no stepped finishing around the date window just a punched hole and also no longer having colour matched date windows. I'm really confused how they could charge around £5100 rrp for current generation but think these new ones are worth around £5400 for what I see to be a lesser design. Also not to mention the price increase coming at the start of September. For me it was a no brainer to get the current generation.

Love these Omegas.. dude...I had a total revelation... went to York for a few days (go! It's gorgeous)... tried on:
    - IWC mark XX
    - JLC master ultra thin and control
    - vintage Blancpain Villeret white dial
    - vintage gold Omega Constellation
    - vintage Zenith Elite
First of all I'm 100% getting the IWC.
Then I bought a tiny 35mm 60s dress watch by Enicar for £110
AND I tried on a DateJust and OP Rolex and felt NOTHING !
Those vintage pieces and the IWC and JLC were SO much more interesting than the Rolexes
    I'm totally over the brand
Omega and the others all the way..I don't need to spend years waiting for the AD when there are thousands of beautiful options out there
The Blancpain dress watch was probably the most impressive, but I didn't have £3800 to spend on basically a non water resist watch
But once I get the iwc or a similar daily, I'm honestly getting a 7mm thick high hill horology , high class piece like a Zenith, JLC , Blancpain as a gorgeous elegant piece
For now I'm loving the little champagne dial Enicar which ticks away nicely losing 10 seconds per day.. bless... the hesalite glass steamed up today in the heat. ..damn...a service already!? I'm loving it. So slim
It just shows you that you need to be out there trying new watches but also vintage watches..its how you learn
P.s. need to try Omega Globemaster or Railmaster.... nobody has them in store!

My first Omega has been the AT World Timer (SS). I... love it. I sold my GMT II back in 2019 due to the distasteful BS that brand was allowing. The market is flooded with excellent product and the (ridiculous) money is worth more than the watch. Also~ this AT is a better watch (overall) than the GMT II. It "feels" more delicate, but it has proven to be even more robust. I had to send the GMT back for warranty work within the first 2 years of ownership. Not so with the AT.

However, the more I delve into the watches, the more nit-picky I become, and the recent Aqua Terra throws me off by now having any lume pip at the 6 o clock marker, or any date frame. It just makes the date feel off centred, almost too high up and make the 6 o'clock area feel empty for me. Coming (back) to the video after 1 year (and a day after the release of the new AT black) I think I’ve found a competitor for the Explorer 36 as my grail watch 😅

The cal 8900 master coaxial in the new AT is 39 Jewels...I thought I heard you say 29...

Look at the 2504.30 aqua terras of the early 2000s. The new sandstone is very similar. Those first gen aqua terras were the best in my opinion (until now?)

The first generation of the Aqua Terra had Sunburst dials. I have on omega 2504.80

The aqua terra was one of my favourite omega models but when they started to polish the centre link of the bracelet it really cheapened the look of the watch for me. It bothered JOMW as well so he ended up getting them professionally brushed out.

I've been really considering having my Seamaster brushed professionally... that's one downside (if we could call it that) with Omega. They tend to polish many, many surfaces 😆 Great call having your centerlinks done, makes it 10x more wearable as a daily! 🥃

@@ID-Guy the brushing naturally occurs on Omegas if they are worn enough :) that’s the certificate the watch is loved and it is being carried everywhere

Although its always fun to see all the diverse, creative, imaginative, over fussy and complicated mechanical watch designs....Truth is I cant help but personally prefer watches with more pure, clean, defined and functional (unfussy) design language, approach, ethos and aesthetic!
Therefore I cant help but struggle with watches that are messy or have awful 3 -o-clock (or in-between 3 and 4-o-clock) day or date complications or those equally irritating disjointed power reserves or chrono" functions lol.
So this type of design.... where the date is at least placed at the 6-o-clock position....appeals greatly. However the pure luddite in me would still prefer a simple non date version 😆

IMO, Constellations, Museum, and Olympic are the most underrated Omega models. However, the Aqua Terra, for me, is [kinda] overappreciated. But not as overrated as the milked out Speedmasters.

I've got another on in the works about the Railmaster (yet another under appreciated machine) - this could be a running series when we think about it 😆 Speedmasters... man, they've kinda become too mainstream for their own good at this point

I wish the AT came in more titanium iterations rather than just a 39mm GoodPlanet and a $48,600 version.

I think Omegas most under rated watch is the Globemaster. My wife bought me an aqua terra as an engagement present, I see them every so often but I’ve never seen a Globemaster in the wild.
