  • Why does the Omega Aqua Terra Cost MORE Than the Omega Seamaster Diver 300?! This is a question I have been asking myself for a while now. There's not a lot in it - about £300 - but still. I could never figure out why there is this gap in price! After doing some research and honestly wanting to understand the price gulf I've boiled it down to 3 big reasons:
    1. The Aqua Terra's 8900 movement upgrade. But this only holds water for the 41mm variation. The 38mm still houses the same movement as the SMP.
    2. The Aqua Terra's Finishing - with the high polish and overall feeling more premium
    AND
    3. Brand Perception - Wanting to market the AT as a bit more upscale
But hey. What do I know?! This was just me going down an Omega rabbit trail!

I own the Aquaterra, and choose it over the SMP 300 for various reasons:
    It has a superior movement.
    It is better finished.
It’s more versatile, looks good with a suit, with jeans and a leather jacket or in the beach. The perfect beater.
About it being more pricey, I think it can be attributed to the movement and to the hands and indexes being rhodium plated.

Because Omega knows I want an Aqua Terra so they intentionally place it above my budget in the hopes I'll cave and buy the Diver 300, which I won't do. And so the ongoing and never ending Cold War between me and Omega continues. But in all seriousness, I really do think that if the Aqua Terra was placed at the same price bracket as the Diver 300, it would be possibly the best do it all watch at that price point. I'd say the same thing for the Globemaster too. Great video Britt!! You're absolutely killing this youtube game!

For novelty items, the real cost of making probably does not matter as much. I think the aqua terra is a more all rounded watch and therefore has a larger customer base. Being able to attract more people probably also means being able to charge a higher price.

I would not say the Aquaterra sells anywhere near as well as an SMP300.
It’s very big/thick and heavy for a dressier watch, and people are not super keen on butterfly clasps.
The SMP300 sells loads because people on the rebound from Submariner rejection get caught up in a spiderweb of hype and hyperbole about it.

I think the main reason for the AT pricing is that it's basically Omega's answer to the Datejust. And as such, it needs to exude that "luxury" vibe, including in the price. The Seamaster 300 is such an unique and iconic design that it won't be confused with anything else, but the AT is a bit more "generic" (which actually adds to its popularity), so it needs to be differentiated from a Longines or a Tudor.

Current prices of the Aquaterra are unfortunately too high, but it's the same with all Omegas and many other brands now.
I own a 41 mm AT and I have to say that for me it's a better watch compared to the SMP 300. Here's my reasons:
    1) Better movement. The 8900 caliber is something amazing. Super accurate (less than 1 sec / die) and the "jumping hour" function made it a great travel watch, even though it's not a GMT.
    2) Design. Its classic design made it a more versatile than a chuncky diver as the SMP 300 ( that I love as well).
    3) Finishings. Better on the AT.

Yes the AT bracelets don’t have any adjustment including those new smaller colour pieces cashing in on the colour palate trend. Bit of a cop out and the reason I never wear my old Seamaster as it’s too tight some of the time. The jumping hour thing is OK if you are a frequent flyer but a pain otherwise when setting from dead. Omega never fail to just fall short if they sorted that I’d be back in the game. Maybe…

Got the AT 41 two weeks ago- timezone function is quick hour set on the 8900 movement instead of the quick date set on 8800; I personally find the quick date set to be much more handy than the quick hour set.
Here's some cons you won't find until you dig deeper- the 8900 movement results in significantly higher resistance when you manually wind the crown! like the SMP300 is super smooth. I actually thought my AT was broken! also the crown shape - while it looks good, is painful to manually wind and screw in. small things, but things you notice!

    • @ElRobin

It’s history and economics. The Aqua Terra had the in house co-axial 8500 introduced in 2008 while the Seamaster Pro was still using the old 2500 cal (an ETA 2892 with co-axial escapement added). The Planet Ocean also got the new movement and a price bump. Then they kept raising the prices on the 8**** movement watches but kept the 2500D time flat and a lot lower. They had to do that, because if they sold it at the same price as a PO with a better movement, no one would have bought them. When they finally introduced the 8**** series in the diver 300m, they couldn’t bump the price too much, or no one would buy it, but go for the older model. It was the “cheap” Omega sports watch. They’ve bumped it up a little, but when they also jump the other lines, it will never catch up.
They consider the Planet Ocean and the Heritage 300 the “premium” dive watch and the Pro as the introductory diver.

£300 difference is £250 ex VAT. Which isn't that much. The price difference isn't necessarily about cost to produce. The recent multiple price rises may have caused this. I did see the AT last year and it was less expensive than the Diver 300. Secondly since I can afford a £5k watch a few hundred here and there doesn't matter.
Goldsmiths has the AT for £5.1k right now. Anyway, I think it just the price rises that have made the price differences bigger.

My 2 cents: the 8900 movement with its jumping hour hand is meant to appeal to the Jetsetter crowd as an alternative to Rolex. The Seamaster is, as her Brittness correctly surmised, the entry level hook. They have to sacrifice movement sophistication for the bezel he valve etc.
Another perhaps less important factor is the non- tapering bracelet on the 300.

I would guess that some of the price difference could be put down to the economies of scale. I doubt Omega (or almost any other mass produced watch manufacturer) has a production line running for every watch type. They will run them in batches where there is a cost to set up and take down each a line for change in run. The 300M probably sells significantly more than the AT so the batch sizes of the AT build will be smaller so more cost for line set up and take down per watch. I've no idea how much this justifies an increase in manufacture cost but from my experience in industry smaller build cycles can make quite a difference depending on the volumes. Anyway it's good to draw attention to the reasoning behind the differences in price. Thanks for sharing.

As someone who just sold his 3 years old SMP 300 and bought an Aqua Terra I can say that in my opinion both are amazing watches. Why does one cost more than the other? I honestly can’t say, i guess the simple answer is marketing and that not everything has to do with spec sheets, I mean why does the globemaster cost more than the AT? same movement, less water resistance etc..or why does the new 38 cost more then the 41? Who knows 😂 but yeah I love both watches, wish I could keep both. To me the AT has more luxuries (yet sporty) feeling and I would compare it to something like the Cartier Santos Large or the Rolex DJ, while the SMP is more of a sporty feeling and would compare to something like Rolex Sub.

I think the average person would prefer the looks of the AT - so if they're just in the market for an Omega they'd go with that.
I also think your average watch guy who's worked their way up from casio, seiko, oris, tudor - and now wants to step it up a gear will already have a few dive watches. So I think they'd go with the AT for it's versatility.

I am wearing the White dial Seamaster on bracelet which I paid £4500 one year ago, it is now £5500, and the watch is more substantial, £600 pound cheaper and has on the fly adjustment. Even with a different movement I can’t personally see how the Aqua Terra is a more expensive watch.

It's because the AT had the upgraded coaxial movement before omega got around to installing it in the 300m (2500 caliber). And therefore the AT was priced more. And omega simply stuck with that pricing system because the price DID increase when the 300m got the 8800. BUT were the price to go up beyond the price of the AT....then there would be two problems:
    1. The 300m would be just too expensive. The consumer might as well go buy a Rolex.
    2. Very few people would figure out the justification for the 300m suddenly being more expensive than the AT. And that would frustrate. Therefore omega just retained a similar price comparison ratio.

It's interesting because Rolex does the opposite; A black Sub costs $10,250 here in the US and an oyster bracelet smooth bezel Datejust 41 is $8,050 ( granted Fluted gold bezel and jubilee takes you to $10,500 ) I do think they want to place the Aqua terra as a Datejust comp and the price helps steer you there.

Good call out on the price difference. Fully agree that the diver should cost more. From a manufacturing standpoint, my guess is that the economies of scale they get from manufacturing and assembling the Diver brings down the unit cost significantly… I’m making the assumption that the total diver quantity is exponentially greater than the 300. Whatever the reason is, it keeps me out of the 300 permanently. At retail, I will always choose an OP41 over this watch. And for all the Rolex haters, yes I can and do get Rolexes from my AD without spending on things I don’t want.

I suspect a lot of people are going to dislike hearing this, but here it is: the Diver 300 is, and always has been, Omega's entry-level watch. It has *always* been the cheapest Omega, the least expensive way you could buy a real-deal Omega watch. It wasn't even 5 years ago that you could have a brand new Diver 300 for under US$4000 FROM AN AD WITH THE FULL FACTORY WARRANTY (bit of haggling required, granted). If you want a better diver from Omega then now you're looking at either the Seamaster 300 (heritage) or the Planet Ocean line.
Also, I disagree that the closest competitor to the Diver 300 is the Rolex Sub. No, it's the Tudor Black Bay series. The Sub is more comparable to the 300 heritage or Plant Ocean line.

I‘m not sure if the longer running time of 60 hours is an advantage of the new Aqua Terra. The price for this is, that it‘s running with 3,5 Hz while the older one ( and the Diver 300m) is running with 4 Hz. This makes a watch more accurately and less susceptible for externe moves. Omega copied herewith the technology Tissot used to prolong the running time of the „Gentleman“ Ton 70 hours.
