  • I installed a Transgo Shift Kit and shift solenoids on my 1991 Lexus LS400 in the hope of solving some problems I had in my transmission. But now I have a whole new set of problems I need to fix. This is my process of installing this Shift Kit from an amateurs point of view. Hopefully, this video is informational for anybody else that wants to do this to their LS or just entertaining for other car enthusiasts! Thank you for watching!

    Excellent video Ezra! Really interesting, over here in the UK the 1UZ is swapped into lots of difderent car's and not one swap keeps the OG trans. Ive personally never had an issue with the LS400 trans (driving wise) and I've found it to be pretty good considering its age. But here nobody likes auto trans.
    I'd love to try one of these kits in my 96 LS400.
    Those shifts in yours were almost like a DSG trans, definitely a big improvement!!
    Hope you get to the bottom of the issue, please do a follow-up on this.

      I definitely will man! that's really cool! I was always super curious on how your transmission was holding up to the boost. I'll definitely be making a follow up video!

      @sexus400 I've heard the stock 1UZ trans is good for 400bhp, mine has held up absolutely fine with 6lb of boost with an added cooler. All I've done was the line pressure adjustment for harder shifts, but that transco kit looks real good. Probably not available over here though 😞

      @FullBoostJ4 interesting. I think my transmission is okay. just blew one of the seals. click on one of the links and see if you can get it! have you manual swapped your lexus?

      @sexus400 it's still on the stock auto trans, it's not a daily now though so doesn't get much use. I did just fit a welded diff though 🤣 I will check out the links 👍

    Respect, this car will make a master of you for sure. If this were a resto I could see why you would buy another auto trans. If you put 900 in and you don’t necessarily need the auto, you could just go the fischracing route if you’re gonna keep the car

      im definitely learning a lot as i go! if I need a completely new trans. I would love to manual swap it. I'm assuming that's what your referring to. we will see what happens in the next couple weeks when I actually get the transmission out of the car. I appreciate the comment!

      more than anything too. I want to be able to still daily drive it reliably and keep the car clean. if I ever go to the extreme with building it. it won't be for a long time

    2 questions for you man and great video btw you did great making it understandable for new people. I got my 93' ls400 a few weeks ago and one of its main issues is transmission problems. it says there's a short on solenoid valve 2 and I was thinking doing this would be a great opportunity to fix that. Where did you get your replacement solenoids? it does not look like they come as a part of the kit, and also do you know which valve is no.2? thinking it might be one of those other valves. anyways ill probably just replace all of them while I'm down there, thanks!

    • @sexus400
      @sexus400  2 місяці тому

      I believe I bought mine off of Rock Auto. the OEM solenoids are crazy expensive so I went with the ones from them. there were a couple different options to choose from on there. I got most expensive option that was like 100 bucks and some change and it was plug and play. it worked great. with the one I bought, it replaces both solenoid 1 and 2. might as well replace them both while you are down there!

    • @sexus400
      @sexus400  2 місяці тому

      I definitely would recommend just trying to replace those solenoids for now if your having any transmission problems at all. then refill it back up with Toyota specific transmisison fluid. I believe it is called "Toyota Type-IV". with that if you were really wanting to take good care of your tranny lol. add some Plantinum LubeGard transmisison additive that you can find at O'Reillys. But if your feeling ambitious go for the Shift Kit! it is definitely a big task. just be prepared to possibly end up dumping more money into extra cooling etc. You will see in my next video coming out in about a week that I had to fix some major transmisison cooling problems (I don't think the Shift kit caused it necessarily). Good luck to you anyway tho man!! you will definitely love your newest purchase😁

    what kind of transmission issues made you do this? i have a 1990 and a few months back it was not accelerating uphill and it almost felt like it was slipping. its not doing it as often now but when i push the second accelerator or kick down there is a delay before it actually accelerates. i bought the trans filter already and am waiting on solenoids as well. any other things i should focus on? i also replaced the fluid with valvoline type 4 atf a few months back. thx for any advice!

    • @sexus400
      @sexus400  Місяць тому +1

      replacing fluids, adding some platinum lubegard additive to ur tranny, make sure your cooling system for your transmission is working (like your electric fans), make sure your fluid levels are good, replace those shift solenoids, and replace the filter👍🏻 your doing about all the right things man. I dont think I would recommend a shift kit to fix any of your problems, but a shift kit is fun. if you have any transmission fault codes I would check those as well. but yeah, just keep checking all your bases! I hope you get it figured out!!!

    i have a question for ls400 owners first gen (i have a check engine) is there any wire/cable i should use for a check engine light or do we have to use like a copper wire or like in this case a paper clip and read off the blinks

    • @sexus400
      @sexus400  5 місяців тому +2

      you will have to read the blinks, same as the transmission code. you'll have to research where to out the jumper wire but yeah. its OBD1 so you won't be able to just plug in a code reader

    The transmission is very very pucky about what kind of fluid you put in it (ask me how i know) you cant just use regular fluid you buy at an auto parts store. You have to get type 4 trans fluid directly from lexus. It is very pricey but well worth it. From what ive talked to with trans mechanics,it has a higher viscosity and different types of detergents,so what ive been told but from my experience seems to line up with the problems i was having with off the self fluid

    • @sexus400
      @sexus400  3 місяці тому

      yeah I've figured that out now. that's all I use now! my problems ended up being a blown oil pump seal from my transmission getting way too hot. my electric fans haven't been working & I didn't realize it.

    I have a 96’ Ls400 which I replaced the transmission prior due to old Transmission only going into Reverse and NO Forward gear working.
    Now having an issue with my Replaced Transmission with NO REVERSE AND NEUTRAL DRIVES/Jerks FORWARD. Any help?

    • @sexus400
      @sexus400  5 місяців тому +1

      are there any codes that your transmission is throwing? it's hard to give any direct answer because I wouldn't know the difference between my year of LS400 and the 1996. I would just check the basics before anything. Like your fluid level and maybe the Shift linkage. but again I'm not there, it's a really hard call to make and I'm by no means a professional. I'm learning as I go just like everybody else. look through some forums on Google and see what you can find. I hope you figure it out man!!

    • @sexus400
      @sexus400  5 місяців тому +1

      you would think since your having similar problems just in different transmissions there could be a line clogged or some sort of electrical problems or maybe the Shift linkage like I said. it's hard to say. all speculation. I definitely recommend doing more research and im sure you'll find something!!

      hey i had this issues before i eventually got rid of my old 400, 96 230k miles. neutral drove forward, only 1st 3rd and 4th gear worked. car lurched forward in neutral and park. i read the shop manual pdf diagrams like a hawk and even drew out the shift logic and it turned out that the only possible way the 4 speed was doing this was that one of the forward clutches was stuck/fused together. pulling the transmission pan i replaced the solenoids to no avail, but also i spotted a crack in my valve body. it could've been 1 of two things: valve body or 2 fused clutch plate. one requires a $600 valve body to just gamble if it was that issue or not or a full transmission rebuild. i am sad to say your transmission needs a rebuild or you need to get another good transmission to put in as one of the foward clutches are locked/fused together and you cannot really do anything from the car to unlock it.
