  • I promised this over a year ago and have finally sat down to do it. In this first of a short series of videos I take you through the construction of a Wills Craftsman kit. This was my gateway in to scratch building so hopefully you will get something out of it and maybe give one of them a go.

    This "wordy" video has, potentially, been the most informative YT Video on model construction I have ever seen. Thank you so much.

    They are excellent value for money considering the contents in the box, but are intimidating for newbies. You did a great job with this video de-mystifying them.

    Probably fair to say Paul, that I fall perfectly into the intended audience for this video, only difference being that I'll be working in N scale.
    Over the last few decades, I've accumulated a decent pile of kits, in preparation for starting my long-awaited layout. These kits 𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒆 intimidated me a wee bit, mainly because of the lack of pre-cut parts but I have the tools, the kits, the time and the desire; all I need now is the space and the skills.😁
    I'll be watching this series with interest.
    Cheers for now, Dougie.

    I've seen these kits but I wasn't aware of just how much stuff you get in one. At some point or other I have probably bought all those components individually for a lot more than £18.99! Looking forward to this build.

    Very interesting kits...a slight hybrid of modeling, kit-bashing, and scratch building they seem. The price is good compared to full models, although for even less I get full model buildings from a German company called Auhagen, but those are full models and altering them takes a little work, though they do sell parts to do what this kit is doing, too. I look forward to what you do... another Master Class about to begin, so I have enrolled and will be in class.

    I love the kits, not so much the price but there a great way to gain confidence and skill to scratch build your own or customise the kit, and if you make a mistake you can just buy another pack of sheets.

    Hiya Paul, hope ya well. Been waiting for this series for a long while and while waiting I have had a number of the kits bought for me. They are stowed away in a draw in the model room waiting in the queue. Hopefully not too far away now but I agree, they are really good value and great kits to build with a little skill and patience. I did manage to do a cottage as a trial build and they are great.. Stay well, cheers for now, Chris

    Hello Paul,
    Loved the build.
    It has been a decade or two since I had a Wills kit. Back when I lived in Limerick. So this model has a degree of sentiments.
    If I may some tips & tricks I have used to preserve my templates, including Wills.
    First, when I open a kit I scan to my model RxR desktop all of the patterns as a PDF file. Occasionally the instructions if there are any. This way I have a library of original plans as well as mix & match plans to mash together into customized structures.
    Taking my lead from Michael over at Chandwell Model Railway, I NOW print the desired templates to peel & stick backed paper. From this I can stick the plan directly to my plastic card for cutting out. OR, I can attach the printout to card stock, cut it out, and use it to cut out the finished surfaces. A third thing possible is to apply the pattern to card stock and then build a mockup or layout place filler. The third way provides for an inexpensive practice of the finished model while giving me the opportunity to review where the finished model will be placed on the layout.
    I'm anxiously awaiting the results of your build.

      Hi Jim all excellent tips there. Big one for me is that portfolio of plans that can be called upon again and again. Thanks for watching. Paul

  • @EITURKEY1
    @EITURKEY1 2 роки тому

    I like following your design logic. I have built a few of these over the years, and usually produced an acceptable result, do be aware that while Peco reissues have better quality plastic there are a large number of Wills older kits around which have more brittle brickwork, they are still perfectly buildable, you just need more care in cutting out, I tend to sigh a bit when I hear people make rude comments about these kits, they are way superior to others. I am currently building a continental origin laser cut kit, twice the price, flimsy and have marvellously misleading instructions [or maybe I am just as thick as a brick], but I will be building more Wills Craftsman kits in the future..

    • @GalgormHall
      @GalgormHall  2 роки тому +1

      It’s perhaps the one downside of picking up older kits, the plastic can become quite brittle and difficult to work with. You are right though these kits can often get a bad wrap as some feel they are too complex or difficult to achieve acceptable results. Hopefully this video will dispel some of those myths and reveal the versatility of them instead. Paul
