    When I lived and taught English in Japan in my twenties, one of my favorite authors about Japan was a guy named Lafcadio Hearn, whose Japanese name was Koizumi Yakumo. Even my Japanese friends would praise him for his remarkable insights into the Japanese spirit and character. Lafcadio Hearn was a Greek / Irish American who went over to Japan to teach English during the Meiji era, fell in love with Japan, and wound up spending the rest of his days there. He even met and married the daughter of a Japanese Samurai and was adopted into their family. And he was such an amazing writer!

    Great video. Your only mistake was not going to the busy restaurants with a lot of locals. Those are the best tasting. Instead you went to kinda empty restaurants so the food probably wasn’t the best

    Yes, Jenny - the Gyoza is good - but Gyoza is just the Japanese version of Chinese Jiao-zi, which was my favorite food when I lived in Taiwan as a little boy. There are some restaurants in Japan that specialize in only Gyoza. Ramen hails from Sapporo - Sapporo Ramen is famous throughout Japan. Unagi, or Eel, was one of my favorite foods in Japan. Also great is what they call Yakimono, or "grilled things" - you can have various kinds of fish grilled, meat grilled. One of my absolute favorite mouth watering Japanese dishes is Nasu Dengaku, which is a half of a large sauteed eggplant topped with a sweet miso sauce - yummy! Yeah, they got all kinds of wierd fish and squid and stuff, but if you really want to see if you have a Yamato Damashi, or a Japanese Soul, or were Japanese in a past life, just try Uni, or Sea Urchin innards - they say you can taste the whole ocean in Uni! Natto, or sticky fermented soybeans is another acid test to see how really Japanese you are. When Japanese tourists traveling abroad are interviewed and asked what thy miss the most about Japan, most of them say the food.

      That is really interesting!! We will say, we do really miss the food in Japan, it was all sooo delicious!

    Japanese culture note: Yamato is a word for Japan or Japanese in the traditional sense, but it is written with characters or ideograms that mean "Great Harmony". Harmony is the keynote of Japanese society and culture, and Japanese people live within this Great Harmony of their society and culture. When Japanese people refer to their own traditional Japanese food, they call it Washoku, or "Harmony Food". Anything else that is traditionally Japanese is referred to as harmony this or harmony that. You might see on a wall, a hand of the Buddha, often holding a lotus blossom, with the character for Harmony written on it.

    The ginger is supposed to be a palate cleanser.
    it is not a condiment to eat with your sushi/sashimi. Definitely not to be used like wasabi and shoyu (soy sauce).
    So you should not eat it together with your sashimi like that.
    You eat that ginger if you want taste something that is contrasting in flavour from what you ate earlier, and need to cleanse your palate, so you can taste the next dish better.
    So eating that is akin to eating a wet wipe for your tongue lol

    • @JacobandJennyTravel
      @JacobandJennyTravel  Рік тому +1

      Oh wow that is interesting and good to know!! In the US it is eaten with the sushi! Thanks for the information friend :)

    • @gorillaofjohn15
      @gorillaofjohn15 Рік тому

      @@JacobandJennyTravel that is the original purpose and definitely not an area-specific condiment style.
      By right it is not part of the sashimi "package". It is purely a cleaner :)

    Hey! Love watching you guys enjoying food. If you want to try best beer, choose Ebisu beer. It's another level. (Costs most though) Asahi super dry and kirin beer are also famous and are at reasonable prices. The best sake is Dassai. You might wanna visit the basement floors of department stores. They are tons of foods and a lot of fun just watching.😊
