This video also helped me overseed this fall. I overseeded mid October 2020 and 1 month later my yard looks awesome. By mid December 2020 my yard is greener and fuller than all my neighbors. I followed all the steps except aerating because my lawn was pretty moist. Thank you brah!
I purchased a home and inherited a lawn that needed some serious tlc. As a beginner to the process I naturally went to UA-cam for some tips. I have to say your videos been most helpful to me personally. Your channel is greatly appreciated. 🙌🏻🙌🏻
I pre-germinate the Bermuda grass seed by mixing it with Peat Moss in a 64 gallon container, I add water until it’s damp, and then I cover the container for 4 days to germinate. After that I mix with lawn soil or top soil in a wheel barrow, I spread the mixture over the bare areas, I throw some fertilizer on it and I water 3 times a day (using a timer that connects to the faucet on the side of the house). A couple of weeks later, green grass covers the entire area
This video led me down a long road to what a lawn can be. I actually left the area of grass seed and now have full clover lawns and I mix in chia during the growing season. This puts nitrogen into the soil naturally conditioning it with the clover as well as provides a healthy crop of clover and chia for goats, chicken, horses, pigs etc. It's created a very drought tolerant yard which looks like grass when mowed and looks beautiful until it is. Best of all, I never have to add fertilizer since it's conditioned naturally. Thanks to this video for getting me to investigate the ways of lawn care.
I loved the video and I'm about to use all these tips, but my favorite part is when you stopped and said "car!" 🤣🤣🤣 my husband and I cracked up. Thanks
Awesome suggestions. I can rehab a very distressed old lawn with thorough aeration. Like 4 to 5 passes, then top seed, fertilize and wait 10 days. I do everything in one foul swoop, which opinions may vary on. I use seed and fertilizer from the local turf farm that I bought my own sod from 20 years ago. I offer this service to home sellers thru realtors and guarantee success in 10 days. I charge around $400 tho as a side hustle plus I really enjoy it.
Getting me excited to put down my GCI TTTF seed this fall. First time using Pete's grass seed and I can't wait to see the results. Got my XStart as well! Great video!
If you don't have compacted lawn like mine is a sandy soil type use a "pull behind" detacher and use a crisscross pattern. When I did my yard it was so bad that I had BIG bare spots and was embarrassing to have my neighbors look at lol. But when I seeded it came back so lush and beautiful it's amazing. I also put a healthy dose of crab grass as well as other weed killers, triclopry4 to be exact. Wait 3 weeks before over seeding.
I love your videos. Your instructions are so clear, helpful and simple to follow. Also, I appreciate the links you leave for the products you use. Thank you!
First time home owner. I paid to get my weed filled lawn reseeded in the spring. Used tall fescue. It took about 3 weeks for full germination and a ton of weeds. The heat and sun has stressed it out and I'm not sure itll all come back. I want to overseed this fall. Love GCI turf idea but i dont want to mess up such a good seed. Going to try Scotts Fescue mix or Heat tolerant fescue/kbg mix. Though I dont own a aerator. I plan to just rake it vigorously. Thanks for your vids.
I used Kentucky Bluegrass on my front lawn and the heat tolerant tall fescue in the back. The weeds will come but as soon as the grass is full grown about 3 inches and then after your 3rd mow I would use the Scotts weed and feed spray depending on what types of weeds you have. My lawns look great.
I'm going with Cool Blue from GCI this year for overseeding, hoping the fescue can withstand the sun and heat better than whatever grass is currently in my lawn.
I used/use Pete’s GCI seed too. I really like the Cool Blue a lot. I like the TTTF by itself too but that Cool Blue is just a bit darker and really prevailed this season.
Wish my lawn looked as great as yours. I'm a woman who knows nothing about lawns but have hired many landscapers thru the years and still my lawn looks dead! I am going to try and add grass seed myself. Could you recommend the type of grass seed I should use in a semi arid climate in Southern California? I would appreciate it. Even my neighbors weeds look greener and nicer than my lawn!
It took me a few weeks or so for the Kentucky bluegrass to germinate when I over seeded last time. I think one key is to have a sprinkler system, which I don't have. Maybe when I'm retired I'll have more time and patience to water the whole yard, moving sprinklers and hand watering. I know how, it's just not practical for me. One thing I'm happy about is to see you have a Toro recycler. I just picked one up the other day, and it's nice to see you (and the lawn care nut) both use those. Makes me feel better about my purchase (there are so many choices). Anyway, I know you're telling people good information, and the video is well put together.
Great video. I have question. Last year I detract with my Sun Joe and seeded etc basically redid my whole lawn: Jonathan Greene seed (excellent), dirt, starter fertilizer, tenacity and straw for first time. Lawn did really good. Now we are in spring (Philly) I did my first cut Saturday. Grass isn't bad came in a whole lot better than the mess last year. I'm definitely going to be overseeding and tenacity etc this weekend. My problem area, I have some bald patches and overall need to thicken up hence the reason to oversees. My question, do I detract before seeding? I'm thinking I need to in order to get good root. Thank you in advance.
I was curious on this myself. I’ve seen different recommendations, leave them, rake them up and add them to compost pile, or mulch them with mower for added nutrients as well.
Thoughts on topdressing with compost or 3:1 mix as part of the overseeding process? Also, the 3" plugs look a lot bigger if you mow the grass really short. Just saying.
I’ve been following you for a year. Thank you so much for doing such a thorough video! I have just over seeded Bermuda grass with tall fescue. I was told that the Bermuda grass and the tall fescue could coexist well. It seems like the tall fescue is having a hard time growing in the thick areas of Bermuda, but of course, tall fescue is thriving in the bald areas of the yard. Also, why is the tall fescue only growing in rows and slowly filling in?
Sorry to tell you Lisa but you Fucked up! Never never I repeat never listen to your local home depot idiots. Never over seed Bermuda with anything but Bermuda seed now I bet your grass looks like shit 2 different colors and one grows faster than the other it's okay just start over kill the whole yard wait 1month then cultivate the yard then overseed with Bermuda SEED water every day for 30 mins for 2 weeks straight and you should be back in buisness best of luck!
I pack my seed in by driving over it with my truck and using my tires to smash in every square inch.. Works way better than a lawn roller and keeps the seed from blowing away and the birds from easily picking it!!
Thank you very much for the informative video. I have one question. So I just moved into our home a year ago and I put sod in that same month, roughly a year ago. 100% Kentucky bluegrass from red hen turf farm. I currently have a lot of dog spots in the back yard but for the most part my yard is pretty healthy. I’m just curious, if I were to over-seed this fall, would you use the grass seed from the sod farm to match the KBG, or would you throw down some TTTF to mix things up a bit.
i am in the northeast - your video and explanation was very well explained - thank you - Fescus/KBG applies to NE as well as MW? Glad to you are a Hoosier - my nephew and niece are as well.
How long do you typically wait to mow for the first time after overseeding? I cut as low as I could this past Friday night, and overseeded the next morning. It was now Thursday, and the grass around my new seeds is growing very quickly. I'm worried that if I wait another week the old grass will shade out the seedlings and nothing will grow.
Great video again, decided to go with tall fescue instead of KBG on my fescue lawn for overseeding, just waiting for these Temps to come down. So even tho I'm overseeding, should I use starter fert once germination starts instead of regular fert correct ? One more thing, dude that sprinkler system is just awesome man. Take care!
Love the video bro! Have watched many but BY FAR yours make most sense. Let me ask if you something if you may be able to help. Im a first time home owner in Charlotte, NC and have never did anything lawn related. We just moved in and the lawn looks like crap. Muddy spots everywhere. If I were to follow your steps at it already March 2nd, do you think I could grow grass? Also, what seed could you recommend? Thank you!
I’m so jealous of your lawn! I live in Northern California near Sacramento and would like to over seed my lawn. 1. When would be the best time? 2. What type of grass seed should I use? I want something that is heat tolerant and stays green year round... Aaaannnnnd.... GO! Lol. I want to be the envy of my block, neighborhood, no...city! Lol
PToledo81 I’m in NorCal too. With the valley heat you want a tall fescue, friend. I like the millennium turf type tall fescue. Google a few different sites for the best price. Fescue tolerates the heat best and it stripes real nice. Mow it at the highest setting on your mower for better drought tolerance.
Excellent and informative video just subscribed but I do have a question. I'm going to start this process this fall (2023). After the lawn is fully grown in and looking like yours hopefully, I would still dethatch and use the aerating machine every spring and fall?
Moving into a new build in the spring and I’ll have a sprinkler system for the first time ever. I can’t wait to start building that lawn! I’m also looking forward to how your KB conversion in the backyard. I’ll be basing my seed choice pretty heavily on what you think after doing that
I just went through the same thing....big bucks brand new house, I wanted it to have the best lawn to match....Let me tell you a couple of things first...1. Find out where your local Top Soil supplier is....Not some generic landscapper...I mean the source...Poke around, I've got an Acre lot, including the house, so that comes out to just over 7K Sq. FT.....I know your builder put down some kind of soil, but trust me, they put down the cheapest pebbly junk they can get away with, and the cheapest crappy "Landscapers Seed" full of thencrappiest weenies seed mix you can get...its cheap, and it grows in fast and thick...but trust me...in a few years you'll have nothing but weedes. I went by a couple of houses he'd built, and planted grass for....all weeds, you don't want that shit. So, first of all, like I said-find your local top soil provider first....Youre going to want 3-6" The builder told me they put down top six, yeah junky crap, but still something, so i went with 3"Do the math, ykull find some equation showing how many "Yards" of top soil you're going to need for you're square footage. These soil companies do deliver, and basically they charge by the dump truck worth of soil, about 20 yards per truck loads worth, whether the trucks half filled or not...think multiples of 20 yards, wven if you're calculation equates to somewhere inbetween...My calculation came out to requiring 3r yards, so i "rounded up to 40, or two trucks worth...Now, haggling with the soil provider is expected...he originally wanted $1,000 per truck load, i oooed and ahed a little bit...got a slightly better offer, then said OK....if i come back in an hour from now, with a fist full of cash...will you take $750 in CASH per load ? Thats $1,500 in cold hard cash!!!!! I said to him, he looked out of the corner of his eye at me and said "Cash?" Yea, "Cash-15 crisp new 100 dollar bills" I said to him....OK, he says back....He'll respect you, instead of thinking youre some kind of wet behind the ears yuppie, prime for the picking. You got him talking now to you as if you're a working class joe....dont ruin it by showing up in a brand new Beamer or something...So you got him talking now. Now you ask him who he can recommend to spread the soil over your property....Now, dont say you're a DIY Hero...when you see a couple of dumbstruck worth of soil dumped in your driveway....you'll be glad you hired a couple of guys with profesional backhoes to spread the stuff.dont even think you can do it yourself....So, this soil provider is going to know the right guys for you to call, probably tell you to say Joe told you to call...When the head guy shows up to give you an estimate, try to let off that moneys tight after buying this new house or something, or else the guys going to squeeze you as much as he can...Whatever price he gives you, tell him you've gotta think about it, and you'll call him tomorrow or something...That way he thinks you've been shopping around a little bit, and morre open to negotiation....I got a deal, he wanted $1,200...i offered $750....again, emphasizing cash, these guys always like to see the green. So, the rest of the project you can do on your own...Now, you went to the source for the soil, got a good price, found a good crew to put it down...You probably saved yourself big time money compared to if you just called a landscaper out of the yellow pages, and said-I need some top soil delivered and laid down...how much??? They'll skin you alive...Arranging it myself, cost me $2,150. A landscaper wanted $7,500....If you got that kind of money to throw around fine....Me, I tried to save a little here and there, so i could afford...The best soil, professionally spread...the best 100% Kentuckybluegrass seed, Organic Starter Fertilizer etc...BTW - Only use Organic Fertilizers from a landscape supply store...nit off the shelf - full of chemical stuff from Homedepot or something...Trust me...My new Kentuckybluegrass Seed was coming in like we a magic carpet the spring after I planted it....Then, at Homedepot I saw how Scott's Turfbhilder was on sale... I'd been warned, but couldn't resist a sale...so I spread it, thinking oh..this stuff is cheap compared to what it cost me for my organic fertilizer I had been using....so I spread it a lot thicker....5 days latter, my lovely magic carpet - croaked on me and died, turning to a see of brown, burned horror....I had to start all over again, I was heartbroken. Good Luck, let me know if you have any questions...Alex
@@TheMormonPower don't know if you have notifications on or if you even remember your original comment. I live in the south so my top soil seems like it will be a pain to remove. Do you recommend I remove the top soil DIY then follow the rest of your comments advice? Also, I should probably wait till spring to start this process right? I still gotta find out what grass I should be going with, all the grass videos I come across are guys living up north talking about their favorite grass.
QUESTION: I noticed that you use Scott's in the video. I've used the Scott's 4-Step treatment now for over three years at the suggestion of the sod company that install by back yard lawn (tall fescue, zone 7). Specifically, Triple Action and Weed & Feed in spring, Summerguard in summer, Winterguard Fall Lawn Food in fall). I'm not happy with the results and numerous people with better looking yards that me strongly discourage using Scott's. Anyway, each year I battle weeds, brown spots, weak root growth in some areas. I want to keep the topic simply as to whether; 1) Scott's is a sound and reputable brand and 2) if I need to tweak my treatment schedule. Thanks.
This video also helped me overseed this fall. I overseeded mid October 2020 and 1 month later my yard looks awesome. By mid December 2020 my yard is greener and fuller than all my neighbors. I followed all the steps except aerating because my lawn was pretty moist. Thank you brah!
Going through the LW archives and came across this gem. Great video!
Which grass seed did you use
How do you get rid of ants all over the lawn, and very grainy soil?
@@deniseshelton2096 I would love to know this as well. Did you ever find out?

I’m about to purchase a new built with no grass n I’m scared of how much sod will be . Did this work for you was it less expensive
😊
I'm currently in this situation. The weeds have really shown themselves this summer and I have to stop the spread.
Spot on my guy. I work for a lawn care company and you do everything perfectly. Much respect. Love your lawn.
I pre-germinate the Bermuda grass seed by mixing it with Peat Moss in a 64 gallon container, I add water until it’s damp, and then I cover the container for 4 days to germinate. KBG has germinated in 7 days for me in my experiences and I use the off the shelf Scott’s 100% mix.
Awesome suggestions. I can rehab a very distressed old lawn with thorough aeration. Like 4 to 5 passes, then top seed, fertilize and wait 10 days. I'm going with Cool Blue from GCI this year for overseeding, hoping the fescue can withstand the sun and heat better than whatever grass is currently in my lawn.
By far the easiest video I’ve seen
I’m sure the 3” plugs look bigger in person.
Those plugs looked to be at least 6". Maybe 8. But I've been told the girth of the plugs is far more important than the length.
If I had a nickel every time I heard that
The darker ones look bigger
Magnifying glass makes it look bigger!
Haha
This made for a great morning chuckle. Nothing you said is over the top, to do. Thank you...
Haha... "I'm an expert at 3 inches". That caught me by surprise!

Hey, Thanks for the reply! Much appreciated.
@@PToledo81 of course. Have fun and good luck!
Just exactly what i am cond=sidering doing myself. So very good timing. thank you.
This video was so good Im going to watch it 2 times just to get you more views!!
🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
I only wish we could grow that kind of grass in Florida. Sadly not what I had when I lived in Kentucky. Great video and thank you! 😎👍
Trugreen was nosy of your yard; great content!
Thank you helping me with my lawn will try next week!
@@TheMormonPower Thank you for the advice. Your story was informative and entertaining at the same time.
Just stopping by to let you know you have that I hate video intros... But you have the best intro music by far on UA-cam.
I dont understand the first sentence 🤷♂️ sorry
The Lawn Whisperer wow, yeah, totally screwed that one up 😂😂😂 just ignore me
You are awesome! Thanks so much for the info! I'm in a rental home with dead grass! Wish me luck! Haha.
Great vide and thanks... I am going to do mine this coming fall..
Thanks.
Busted !!
Now we know your secret weapon.
We all saw the true green truck pulling out of your driveway at the end there 🧐
Gardener: Hey, did you want to feed and seed?
Me: Yeah, of course!
Also me: Let me go to YT & see what he’s charging me for. 😂
