Using 7018 Rod 1/8" run at 160 -165 amps, run weld up not down in verticals. I was a union ironworker structural welder for years,our welds needed to handle vibration loading. Fun watching you two folks life and work. Enjoying your fun and casual banter.
Great video. I liked your comments on the hurricanes. Yes the Nats are bad. And as a hurricane Rita survivor, yes, we rode it out in the direct path of the storm. Long story. I will never ride out the storm in the direct path, unless I have a extremely well fortified storm shelter. Rita caused us to lived in a FEMA trailer for 2 1/2 years while I rebuilt our home in town. We left for Laura and Delta and they changed our landscape and house here in the country. And yes, a grinder in paint makes a welder you ain’t.. all that matters is it did work. Love what y’all doing kind of got the same situation over here, except mine are 2ea 24’ aluminum foot aluminum truck boxes I bought about 10 years ago. I built the same contraption to move mine, great minds think a like. Great job, more crazy weather coming.

Right there with you on the hurricane plans for hunkering down. We too have built for it. Hurricanes give us plenty of warning. Last weeks tornado's rattled quite a few, BUT was a good test to check folks preparedness levels. Can't wait for your shelter to go up. I would say I'll stop checking on ya'll afterward, but that probably won't stop :) Ya'll rock and love what you're doing.

Question about hurricanes, how will these containers not be lifted up? If a hurricane can destroy a house, how would a container be safer? (California native here) truly curious. Thx, love your videos!
We have pipe concreted deep in the ground through the slab. The containers are welded in place to these pipes on all four corners.
It’s the magnetized drill stem , always put a pass with a 6010 or 6011 and then a 7018! Still no guarantee that it’s going to hold! Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes you don’t! Jim, don’t feel bad brother, it happens! Lydia, you did a good job girl and you deserve to give him a little grief! lol 😂 Hopefully not too much, Jim! lol 🤣😂🤣 Yeah Lydia, just be careful! Those cutoff wheels do fly apart and I’ve had them throw a piece into my leather glove! Yall got this, guys! 👌🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I’m not saying that Jim didn’t look quite dapper in those suits, however, had they been in camouflage with matching Crocks… perfection! It appeared from a distance, that Hooti failed to live up to that move again ! Maybe Jim should allow you to try a hand on the next weld, just to prove it wasn’t his mistake! Wink wink! Always ready for some Cajun fun!

I am really freaked out by snakes. Curious if you did find any under there. I would never be able to live there. We have rattlers here but you don’t see em much.
As a safety professional, I think you’re doing it the right way. Your families safety is more important than a kitchen any day. I am personally loving this shop build and watching it closely as I might build me one next year. I already have one container.
Luckily we did not this time! Gus actually finds and ☠️ them. Some people may think it’s harsh, but with how many posionous snakes we have and having a little one around it’s not worth the risk. He killed around 20 posionous last year all around the homestead.

Another quality job. Hey, look, I live down here in Florida so I know how the heat is that you're dealing with. Just a suggestion, get one of those easy up canopies so when you're working in something, like welding a hootis, you can at least be out of the direct sun just a little bit. The gnats are a whole different story. The only thing that gets rid of them is wind so when I work on something outside many times I'll bring a big fan out just to blow a little air to keep the bugs away. God bless y'all and we'll see you in a week or so.

Since the Axles need to be, either a lot shorter which is not possible in your application, or a lot thicker, to be stronger...
I think the geometric solution is:
- Add I-Beam or a T-Beam under the two axels or replace the two axels with I-beams/T-beams, your choice.
However, if you have a round Solid Axel, that would probably the best structure.
The Hollow Axels have proved to be the weak part in your Excellent Hootis.
When the Container's Weight was concentrated on the center of each Axel, it wouldn't handle load. Add to that the F/B Movement of the whole system as well the shaking and any sudden drops from the uneven ground.
But once the whole thing is on the smooth concrete Pad, that Hootis is strong enough to handle the task
- The Wheels handled the task just fine
- The attachment between the Wheels and the Axel did too
- Add to that the L-shape Bars next to the wheels.
* It's only the center of the axels that's weaker than needs to be.

Good morning Lydia and Jim, great to see y'all this morning. Jim certainly looked great in the suit. He was barely recognizable and looked very professional. I love those little goats, they are so cute. Those pesky gnats will definitely wear on you and drive you nuts when they are bad. I really hate breating them in ugh! It's exciting seeing the second container up on the slab. Now you can really see and get a feel for the scale of the layout and it is looking great as it takes shape. As you commented, y'all are so very fortunate to have so much family so close by and such strong bonds. What a blessing and a joy to always have someone watching out for one another and lending a hand when needed. You are truly blessed. I love your sense of humor and it was rich in todays episode, very enjoyable. At the end, I notice the axel on the Hooti appeared to be sagging in the center. I couldn't help but wonder if a weld pulled away from the sleeve again. From everything that Jim said describing the the fatigue of the sleeve metal, I'm afraid you may likely have redo the axels on The Ultimate Hootis. But then again, I really don't know how much more it will be used or what future plans you might have for it. Your explanation of your current priorities made total sense and you both are the ones who really know where it's best to place your time and attention. People can make odd comments at times because they simply don't understand and can't see the whole picture. Don't let them bother you in any way. You two are doing it right and in the right order. If I were there, I would definitely have a pop-up shade shelter to move around to work under.
I hope you find the guard for the grinder. My husband lost the end of a finger when the grinding wheel shattered on the guardless grinder he was using (luckily it was on the job).

If you drill some holes through the axle pipe and the sleeves run some grade 8 bolts through the pipe and sleeves. Tack weld the bolt head and the nut in place. You’ll be good to go

Good gracious..1st, let's talk about Jim in those suits..wooooo baby. Yes, I am in South Alabama right above Pensacola..so hurricanes are part of living here..I was nursing during the Katrina hurricane , they let us bring our family to work with us that night..anyway..when we left work the next morning and started down the road...It was so bad that nobody said one word all the way home from looking at what all happened. Before I left my house to go to work I had leaned a Cross on my front door steps and walked around my house praying for it...long story short , I could barely drive into my drive way for all of the limbs down etc........BUT THAT CROSS NEVER HAD MOVED AND NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH MY HOME.
Remember when one wants a good strong weld root fill and cap is the rule to remember.

With construction and home improvements, there is a thing called the "danger zone". It exists where a project gets to around 90% done and becomes functional for its intended purpose, and fully completed. It also stagnates at that point, because it's functional and work slows to a crawl as it becomes less important to get finished.
The danger zone is a real phenomenon, and is the bane of the existence of anyone doing this type of work. It takes discipline and perseverance to get through it!
I could definitely see that being an issue! However, we are not the type to quit a project even if it feels like it’s killing us😂

Another fun day! The metal needed heat relief - Annealing and then welded while still pretty hot. It would be a LONG process at home with a piece that large - SEVERAL TORCHES would be required and the temperature and rate of cooling would be very important.
Very true! We might try drift pins and plug welds if the crack again.

Yeah, my wife is from Indy. She went through her first hurricane last year, maybe the year before. Anyway, when I lived up there and they had a hurricane come through (Deep East Texas, Angelina / Jasper counties) Ike maybe. I had family trapped at home, my brother and brother-in-law were missing (They were ok. One had to shelter in place at work and the other at a church in Lufkin. So I packed up the wife and the baby, loaded up with all the tools to cut my way in 26 gallons of gas and 20 gallons of water. I pulled into the driveway about 13-ish hours after I hung up the phone with my mother. I was at work at the time.
It took some time for my wife to get used to the weather and dealing with the hurricanes. After going through her first a year or so ago. When she walked out the front door that morning she was speechless. The first thing she said was "It looks like a bomb went off in the front yard"! I said "yeah, I know. I warned you."
But she's a trooper!! If she can put up with me, she's got a hurricane licked!!🤪

The camo shorts and crocs are your best look.
You could put fans out and get a breeze (hot breeze) ,a little will help
Warm breeze is better than no breeze for sure!
A mix of 1 to 1 water and real vanilla extract in a spray bottle makes a good gnat repellant. Reapply as needed. I use the clear vanilla which is sold in abundance in Progresso, Mexico. I'm only 5 miles from there as the crow flies.

If you want to keep gnats and sand flies away take a dryer sheet and let it hang out from under your ball cap. They don't like the smell. Works for chiggers if you put one in each shoe with the sheet sticking out of the heel.

Hi, Just a suggestion regarding the hootis dolly, weld some 3" angle iron on the underside of the tubes ( tube inside the V ) this will stiffen up the axles and also reduce the stress on the welds on the tubes .

That would drive me CRAZY... (ok.. crazier 🤭) That move appeared to go way smoother than the first... looked like the Ultimate Hootis may have taken some more damage though... hope not. The other thing that is of concern is using a full face shield while grinding cutting metal and wear blue jeans to give the legs some protection. we live around Lafayette so we know the heat and humidity as well. I have seen the damage one of those disks can do WHEN - not if - they come apart - it's not pretty - darn near go through anything including a welding helmet in grinding mode or rip through jeans. Well this was my break. back to working around the house!

I hope that you never have to fix your broken Hootis again. But if you do I would suggest maybe using a scarf or fish mouth joint. This would provide more area to weld and a stronger joint over all. Especially since you have a good 8" overlap between the axles and extender pipes. Great job in gettin' er done.
Simple answer, put a piece of 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 X 1/4" angle iron V side up underneath both pipes, [just tacked] 1" every 6" on both sides, the thing will never break again !!

I hate leaving my property but I’ve already said, one more time and I’m too old for this anymore! Can’t take anymore at 64 years old and living here all of my life! But the thing is where to go, there’s life threatening situations almost everywhere! I just pray that the year will be safe and I pray every time there’s a hurricane out there!
