By far the best video on replacing exterior door handles. Great camera angles, footage quality, and he throws a joke or two in there which keeps the video interesting. Great job!
THANK YOU...!!! At 1:43 is the part I needed to see...!!! I had no idea how to get this apart. I did not even know the yellow piece COMES APART. This solves all my problems. THANK YOU.
Just got done replacihng the front driver side outer door handle on my 2000 Explorer Limited. Not a terribly difficult job. Hardest part was getting the door panel back on. Talk about a PITA!
U make it look easy . the ? I have is when u replace an inside handle and the door won't open from inside but it does on outside. There doesn't. Seem to b any adjustment. On inside rod , so do u use the outside rod to adjust ?
Wow.. so, THANK YOU!!! Your walk through tutorial.. amazing.. I'm sending you one of those, "over excited handshakes with the half-hug/half-pat on the back" gestures 😂 Then continuing to over excitedly shake your hand with appreciation! Seriously, we had a horrible situation come up with an Explorer as my step father needed a favor for a friend of his, locked the keys in the car, then the handle broke... and he was pissy about it (wish I could shove that all plastic handle up his nasal passages)... Overly detailed moment short... you saved my butt. Thank you for your time! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
So since I haven't done this yet to help prevent it from happening again you said to open it towards the side which is closest to the latch I'm assuming that is the right hand corner side? The latch I'm assuming is the part that latches to the frame
I made a follow up video to this one, going over the metal handle version. I recommend those, and a set will run $50-$80. I got mine off of eBay, they are on Amazon as well.
@@SoloRoosterGarage I just replaced my driver's side handle for the third time and was finally able to find the metal Ford Mercury handles on 1AAuto. The part number is 1ADHS01625. The handle and throw arms are all solid metal. The only plastic part is the plate that screws into the door. They have the exact same form factor as the other handles I have replaced in the past. I hope this is the last time I ever have to replace it! Great video!
@@2H2521 I agree. If you can find the metal handles from a different/cheaper vender, please share. Even with the higher cost I still would have saved money in the long run had I switched to the metal handles first rather than going through multiple cheap plastic handles. Just my take
I attempted this repair on a 2005 driver door but had to abort. The plastic clasp on the threaded rod seemed quite different than in this video. I could not flip it open, and repeatedly bent my 90deg pick trying. Revisiting this video, I now realize it's showing a rear door. The front door is much more crowded, and you can't see anything you're working on. I took a photo of the mysterious clasp with my phone - reviewing it now, and comparing it to this video, I think the clasp may actually be the same but upside-down (reversing the orientation), and positioned such that the clasp opening is against (and inset into flanges?) a hard metal piece - I can't remember exactly what, and the door is already put back together, but perhaps it was the window channel. I'm not sure how to get the clasp open with no room to insert the pick. Any ideas?
@@SoloRoosterGarage Yeah, in my case I was picking the wrong side (the rounded hinge side) because the clasp is oriented 180deg to the one shown in this video. I wish I could post the photo I took, because it's maddening!
I apologize for not seeing your comment sooner! I believe these door handles have such a poor build quality that the plastic material can't hold up to the repeated stress of motion, especially in the cold. They pump them out of a factory somewhere for pennies. I'm working toward a better solution for this.
I’ve read on Amazon you can buy metal ones that work way better then these plastic ones. You’ll be buying less handles because the metal lasts longer. I just don’t know which one will fit
Just use anything that has a 90° bend that is small, and you get good leverage pulling. You could bend a 16 penny nail, get behind the yellow latch, then use pliers to pull. I used my phone camera to get a good look at the clip.
This is so so helpful! Can you tell me what kind of handle you used? I've been trying to find the replacement parts, but there a re a few similar ones that I'm not sure would fit. Thanks.
This handle is also used on Explorers and Rangers, so parts are aplenty. I've tried multiple brands, all have been similar quality with none being great. I've had to replace these handles multiple times. You may be able to get a OEM quality part from a dealership, but price will be high.

Every single one of my door handles have broken on my spots trac 😆. Thank you for the instructions!

Wow. Wonderfully explained. I drilled the rivets out and put screws. Boom All done as instructed. Thanks.
Just fixed my mother in law door. Now she likes me even more. Thanks a ton
🙃😊🤣🤩 my kids always tease me that over the past five years, There was never a time where all 8 door handles worked at the same time.😅
Wanted to thank you, just fixed my door...thanks again.

Thanks a ton man, local shop wanted $200 for the replacement. Told them to shove it.

Thanks for this video. Helped tremendously. I was lucky enough to find the same color sport trac at the junkyard with all 4 handles
This is explained very well, thank you...
Good video....I feel your pain I'm tasked with the replacement of many broken parts on a gifted sport trac my father in law gave to my son
Just broke mine think I will order about 3 of these thanks a million for the video I will let you know how it goes
Thanks man great helpful video
Thanks man it really hit was so help watching your video GRACIAS
You should use Dome head bolts (button head) so they are a lot smoother under the handle.
I wish i had watched this video b4 havin the shaft bent just to hook onto the handle lol.
Next time we gonna need more light thanks for the video
Thanks for this video 😊😊😊
Great video thanks. It’s hard to tell with yours but my damn window parts are in the way.
What size nut and bolt did you use?? Great video btw
I believe they were 10mm bolts and nuts, and around a 1 inch bolt length.
@@SoloRoosterGarage thank you so much man
@@SoloRoosterGarage that was my question. How long of a bolt? Thank you. Great video!
Order the Mercury Mountaineer handles (same as sport trac) that are metal. Got mine on eBay, they never break & are totally worth it.
This was helpful

On the driver side it will be the right hand corner side. On the passenger side it will be the left hand corner side.
It's a great video. What do you do if the exterior and the interior are broken and the door will not open?
You will have to get the door panel off with the door closed. It's a pain, but doable.
@@SoloRoosterGarage thank you and I wasn't sure I'd be able to with out being able to open it.
How difficult is this when the door won't open on the driver side?
You will have to try to get the door panel off with the door closed. Stuff may break.
Watched the video definitely gonna follow your steps, but I wanted to know where would I get a good deal on the handles? Any preference?

Have you thought about switching to metal ones? That should fix your problem.
I have tried searching multiple times for metal handles, with no luck. If you know where to find them, please post it here.

I found a set of 4 on eBay for $85. Here's the item number: 371760757105.
Amazon has a set for similar pricing: B079GCS5RJ

You may have to pull on the rod while reaching a pick to open the clasp. I used a pick designed for coolant hoses (thicker material for the pick).

Genius
Do you know what causes them to break so often, I've replaced 3 or 4 in the last couple years

Is there any other tool to use besides a pick to open the yellow clamp on the shaft?
It can be done with your fingers, possibly a flathead screwdriver. I recommended the pick because it is a hard to reach spot.

I have one of these vehicles. The handles on them suck.
I replaced my door handle in 2019 when I bought the truck and agin today. Oof
Ahh, Dora the explorer I get it.
Another STOOPID IDEA From FORD. Just like their "phenolic" brake pistons that overheat and get STUCK.
