I tied fishing line to the sensor clips (mine had 2) so I wouldn't lose them as I fought the truck. Also just cut off the old plastic neck with recip saw...saved a lot of trouble there. The long start just happens on occasion, hasn't been too much of an issue, but your fuel pressure advice will hopefully help me locate my particular issue. One thing that I notice on mine, and many of the other Tracs I see on the road is the weird negative camber that develops on the front wheels. I've replaced every front end part...tie rods, ball joints, control arms, but it's still pretty pronounced. The factory upper control arm bolts don't allow for camber adjustment, and so I think the age of the truck just lends itself to that eventually happening, I guess. Like you, my 2002 Sport Trac has gone through the Front wheel bearings but I haven't had any other major issues. Mine currently is at 231,000 miles and is still going strong except for the fact that I live in Mass so the road salts are doing a number on the metal parts of the body. I will soon have to put her out to pasture and hope to upgrade to the new Maverick which to me is the Sport Trac reborn. I will miss the power rear glass of the Sport Trac as that option is not offered on the Maverick.
My stepdad has a 2001 Ford Sport Trac. It's been a good truck. The Explorer isn't as bad as people think. My stepdad bought his Explorer Sport Trac in 2015 with 150k miles and he's driven it to 214k miles so far. Replaced fuel pump, control arms, water pump, radiator, brake calipers and not much else to be honest. It has never let him down other than the fuel pump causing it to stall out. My stepdad has been towing a trailer with the truck daily since 2017. These engines are known for timing chain problems. The rear timing chain on his truck was making noise. Brand new rear tensioner and now it's quiet. Not sure how long it will be before the cassette finally breaks. I do know that the engine has to be pulled out to work on the rear chain, it will cost over $1500+ to fix.
The thermostat And the long start happened to me But what I did not hear you talk about and I've heard a lot about is the timing chain guides and tensioners going bad
Oh they will I bought a explore with the 4.0l sohc and I had some oil leak fixed, they pulled the bottom oil pan off and they found plastic guides from the timing chain, replace the kit and the timing change snapped which leading to catastrophic failure for the engine. They pulled one out of a junkyard with supposedly 114,000 miles and now my truck needs an oil change and I’ve been hearing this light tapping on the passenger side. I hope I didn’t waste $3700 after three months of use.
2003 xlt with 222,000 miles. Relay switch went out, complete front suspension done over, front and rear brakes and rotors, valve cover headcasket replaced. Other than that it's a good tough truck for a Ford!!
I have "Ghosts in the Machine"of my 2002. Every time I check the codes & clear it out, the following week a new code appears, check engine lite comes on. Never the same code.
And there is a common problem of the turn signal wire coming loose in the steering column. I got the front end wheel bearing and ball joint kit from 1AAuto. Still going strong.

I just bought a 03 Ford sport Trac and these people I believe lied to me they told me I could have a 2005 come get it that day it needs a transmission I know that but the inside is clean as a pain the body is not beat up it's and it showed to have 117,000 mi on it but when they first advertising it had 110,000, I've got a used transmission out of another one that I know is good transmission that we're going to put it in it, when I first drove the truck the transmission shifted out perfect except no I thought about it and thought about it and I finally decided to go get it she said if you come get it now we'll let you have 2,000 so I went and got it and I asked her I said will it make it back to where I live and I got to go with the big mountain he says yeah you may have to shift it down a couple of years and I thought what's that mean but anyway long story short got the truck drove it home and the OD light came on the dash and then the transmission went crazy I mean absolutely crazy every forward gear but no neutral no reverse andbut I want to drive it home I thought I was going to let off at to get the thing to change into a second and then it didn't I let off to let it change it didn't change or give it a little more gas then it went to run like somebody had a whole transmission trying to jerk it out from under security me to death and I finally made it home OD light is still on it, I had a 98 Ford contour brought brand new 2.5 this little car will fly and the OD light started coming on on the shifter and the dash and it went to acting crazy anyway long story short my mechanic fixed it for $1,400 he put a used transmission and it
Picked up a sport trac for my girl for a winter rat and as soon as we put it on the road noticed it was blowing coolant all over the tip of the engine but it’s so hidden you can see it. Looked up the issue and installed the part. Wasn’t bad to replace just slow since you have to pull the throttle body off and some of the bolts were crusty.
😂 My 2004 has had every one of these problems. I have a fairly loud sound system and I heard bass in the middle of the night. I was like "what the hell?". Thought someone was in my truck. The solder joint broke inside the cluster and was making my radio come on randomly with the truck off. But yeah literally every one of these problems. Currently having issues with the 5r55e transmission. 😢 On the upside everything worked great after each fix and hasn't been a bad truck. Once I'm done replacing everything it will be a new truck anyway.😅 Fyi check your body mount bushings. Especially if you're having weird popping sounds when stopping. Don't want your cab flying off.

My mom has an 05. It has the first problem you talked about, or at least I think so. Same symptoms, but also every couple of days she has to jump it to get it started. After a good rain (damp weather) it also needs a jump. Is that because of the cluster draining the battery when the truck is off??

my problem is a 2002 explorer sport trac 4X4 will not have any air come out of the front vents, it will flow up the the defroster and low for feet heat but nothing forward any quick suggestions
Good video. Helped a lot but there was really no need for a lengthy explanation for packing and pre-loading wheel bearings because this vehicle uses sealed wheel hubs, not bearings. Hubs are not serviceable and when they fail you must replace them. Also, the splined shaft end nut that holds the hub on requires a pretty high torque value of 184 ft. pounds. You'll also need a three-jaw hub removal tool to get the hubs off. You can rent one from any auto parts store.
I thought the sport trac wheel bearings were complete sealed units? Also, surprised that the timing chain issue on the early sohc 4.0 didn’t make the list....

Great vid, we have a 01 rwd sport trac with 242k mi on the odometer and the last thing that could possibly go is the rear timing chain, do you think you could make a vid on this?
Timing chain issues were common on the the gen 1. The guides had plastic that over time would wear down and break OR the tensioners wore out making it sound like a old farm tractor.
Thank you so much that sensor was the problem. I have had all kinds of mechanics computer check my rig an my son watched video an had a guy com down an it worked he switched it an its awesome I loves my truck
I have a 2001 Ford explorer sport trac that pulsates when I step on the brake pedal and the steering wheel turns to the left after replacing all my wheel bearings, brake rotors, calipers, pads, booster. and bled the whole system. It does that on a rough surface but when I drive on a smooth surface it does not do all that.
Shifted belt in one of your front tires...? But would do it on smooth road too...hmmm. How are you CV joints? They could be binding. If they have lost their grease, then they most likely need replacing.

Two Sport Tracs and three thermostat housings. They seem to crack. Never had that issue with other vehicles. Also been through a few wheel bearings. The spedometer reads 0 when I'm going at any speed, infotainment system goes totally black and nothing works and the windows can't go up or down. A Ford dealership told me I needed a new instrument panel. Could it be as simple as a short circuit in the instrument panel? Also the infotainment is an aftermarket addition.
Its not that difficult. ..if you're talking front wheel bearings. Four wheel drive is a sealed unit, so you just replace the hub bearing assy. I did mine
So I have a 2002 ford explorer sport trac and its leaking radiator coolant. I found where its coming from; its coming from cracks that have shown up on the right side of the radiator. I had no coolant left in the reservoir tank, so I refilled it for now, and I was told that the whole radiator needs replacement. So my question is where can I find an exact replacement?
I bought a 2001 sport trac and a little inch and a quarter fuel line right off of the fuel pump keeps rupturing and splitting what could be causing this
Nobody I know that has a 2nd gen Explorer (not Sport Trac) has that problem with the coolant housing leak. But they do have plastic housings. Wonder what was changed for the 3rd gen.
Ive only ever had the last two problems completely we had to replace the housing and ofc we replaced the ball joints and bearing s all that fun stuff, ive had other small problems that i have to just deal with or was really easy to fix also, i had my cruise controls messed up but that just need a new cruise control setup and some wiring, the other two are also electrical im sure but the biggest is our gas gauge is 7 time out of 10 in accurate and will go crazy backwards or some wrong spot but ive gotten over than and just reset and watch my odometer, another problem is the front passenger doors window, i think its just a my vehicle problem though it will go out of place and not want to go down much unless you put force onto it or go up and down a lot, one last thing that is semi working also is the auto adjustable side mirrors, they dont go left or right on either side but they go up and down
I have a 2002 ford sport Trac with 4wd. I took it on a road trip and when I pulled off the interstate it jumped into 4wd. I backediy up a few feet and it went back to 2wd. No lites came indicating 4wd. It's done it twice since the road trip. What could cause this?
Hey, I have one customer, with an 2005, hes been thru multiple transfer cases, along the years, and I just put one in recent and is bad again! Any suggestions for me? It would greatly appreciated thanks
I'm thinking of buying a 2005 sport trac like the one you've just shone my question is dose this year (2005) have problems with the timing chain or is that just the earlier models??
On the dash of my 2005 Ford Sports Trac, the level for my battery keeps going up towards the “H” instead of staying in the middle. What does this mean?
Could be a voltage regulator in the alternator or loose connection/wires. The gages tends to have issues with age. Put a volt meter into the cigarette lighter when you drive and see if it is really the voltage. If the volt meter shows the same problem, have the alternator checked. I had a similar problem in a differt type of car that had been in a wreck and found a bare tail light wire in the trunk that was touching the frame, from the wreck. The overcurrent caused a plastic connector under the dash to burn and cause a bad connection and a lot of heat. The bad connection caused the voltage in the system to rise appearing as a high voltage gage reading. Some tape, wire and solder solved the problem and the voltage returned to normal. The problem would only occured if I put something in the trunk that touched the wire on the right fender and touched the bare wire against the frame and I turned the headlights on.
I have a 2001 Ford Explore sport when you put it in drive it stalls and wont move but when you put it in reverse and neutral it will run I need some help with but when when it sits up not driven for a few day it drives like nothing ever happened
My grandpa has an 01. I took it around backroads once, drifting around turns and stuff. It would've been better if I would've found it its in OD by default and you have to push the button to take it off OD. Wish I wouldve known that cuz these have plastic (I think) beds which means theres basically no weight over the rear end lmao and could've spun the tires even easier if I had the better gearing from Drive instead of OD cuz even with the pedal to the floor it doesn't want to downshift when it's in OD. It will but it takes a few seconds, but it was still fun, fishtailing is always a blast :)
HELP PLEASE.... there are not alot of sport tracs in Toronto Canada but i love it. My cluster was giving issues where the mileage numbers would do a light show. Turning on and off rapidly and alternating which numbers would turn on and off. like a light show, also the gasoline gauge was not working for years. AND I decided to replace it when the RPM and speed gauges would drop like they lost power. Then go back up like the power was restored. the light show and the loss of power to the gauges would happen at the same time. So i replaced it wish a used one from a auto wreckers yard. That was good for about 2 years, everything was working fine even the gas gauge. a year ago the gas gauge stopped working again and now the light show and the RPM/speed gauges are acting up again. It doesnt do it everyday but its starting to. what should I do? I already have to calculate the mileage every year because the 2nd cluster had a different mileage than my original. Are there shops that can fix the cluster? maybe it needs to be re-soldered?
Yes there should be shops that can fix this. Also check you grounds clean them up and retighten them. Low voltage and poor grounds can cause many electrical issues. Thank you for checking out the video. If you need auto parts go to: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-Now
My cluster had a break in the solder on the panel. I have a sound system and I started hearing bass at 3am. Did it for a couple weeks. After the truck was off for a little while everything would just come on randomly.
MY Sport trac does the same. I had a similar problem with a Nissan Frontier. I simply located the "main power board" of the whole heating unit, and changed out, cost about $70-$120 for new main board. I'm gonna try this soon. Let ya know how I make out.
I have a problem with mine dying when put into reverse. If left in reverse the idle bogs down and dies. If you push the gas it dies. No problems in forward. Has no other issues. Any input would help. I have replaced the idle air control valve but no change.
Hmm..thats a strange one. It could be one of the piston seals on the reverse band assy. ? I'd take it in to a good tranny shop and have it tested. They can hook up some pressure gauges and test the system.

Love my sport trac despite all the quirks! Fav part of the video was the "boop boop boop boop" sound as he's explaining the gauge going down LOL
Same!
I have one!
Love this guy’s sound effects!! Lol
@@richmighty1752 I have a budget and im gonna buy my first one lol
What quirks do you mean? Lol
+Ricardo The PC Gamer Thanks for the feedback!
This guy was right on all them problems they all happen to my 2003 ford sport trac.
I like these truck/SUV explorers, they are useful in many ways.

Love the sound effects that comes w/ the explanation. 😁😂
Awesome video. Subscribed. Im thinking of buying one of these trucks friday. 56,000 miles for 5,000. In like new condition. It's a 2002 one owner.

How did it go?

@@We3Boys have another drink. There junk

I have to keep my steering wheel tilted up all the time if I don't the plug comes loose, but that's how I drive regardless
@@rubenvazquez317 that's an easy fix. Mine did the same thing and I fix it. I believe there is a video for it. Just take off the top cover of the steering wheel and you can see the wires

If you're buying an 04 with that low milage be sure to have a mechanic with a scanner to make sure the miles haven't been altered. Happens all the time especially nowadays anyone can purchase a $100 handheld computer that rolls back the miles
On the upside everything worked great after each fix and hasn't been a bad truck.
Once I'm done replacing everything it will be a new truck anyway.😅
Fyi check your body mount bushings. Especially if you're having weird popping sounds when stopping.

Well that explains a lot. The speedometer and rpm gauge don't work in the 2004 sport trac we bought. And yes, things turn on and off without the key being in as well. I thought the radio had been wired wrong or something.

My mom has an 05. It has the first problem you talked about, or at least I think so. Same symptoms, but also every couple of days she has to jump it to get it started. After a good rain (damp weather) it also needs a jump. Is that because of the cluster draining the battery when the truck is off??
My mechanic said I burned my drive and reverse clutches on my 2004 sport trac. But it moves when I put it low gear. Please what do I do. Would love to see your response. Thanks
Very informative video. Just snagged an 05 today. Thank you for the heads up just in case!

my problem is a 2002 explorer sport trac 4X4 will not have any air come out of the front vents, it will flow up the the defroster and low for feet heat but nothing forward

Thanks, the SFX are priceless
have a 2003 sport trac great truck, have a vaccum leak i cant locate . replaced a lot of parts trying to find it.
I thought the sport trac wheel bearings were complete sealed units? Also, surprised that the timing chain issue on the early sohc 4.0 didn’t make the list....
They are sealed and not adjustible. At least the ones on the 4x4.

I had this problem with my GMC Sonoma pick-up. You want a fast and cheap cure? Remove the ABS brake fuse from the fuse box.
Shifted belt in one of your front tires...? But would do it on smooth road too...hmmm. How are you CV joints? They could be binding. If they have lost their grease, then they most likely need replacing.
That doesn't make any sense. You should check it with a scan tool while its happening to eliminate weather its abs related. Thank you for checking out the video. If you need auto parts go to: 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-Now

I'm thinking of buying a 2005 sport trac like the one you've just shone my question is dose this year (2005) have problems with the timing chain
or is that just the earlier models??
Only if you never change your oil or run anything thicker than 5w30
Thanks for your input on this type vehicle. Just got one. Nice condition 👏👌. Not to bad of a purchase.
What is wrong when you put the truck in the gears and it does not move and they worked before I change the rear main seal what could be the problem
I have a 2001 Ford Explore sport when you put it in drive it stalls and wont move but when you put it in reverse and neutral it will run I need some help with but when when it sits up not driven for a few day it drives like nothing ever happened
Nice video thank you.
However what can cause the temp gauge not to work? It was just working fine yesterday. Tks in advance
Awesome tips and awesome channel!
Thanks so much!

OH by the way you guys ARE awesome, I have used you videos SOOOO many times over the years.

My cluster had a break in the solder on the panel. I have a sound system and I started hearing bass at 3am. Did it for a couple weeks. After the truck was off for a little while everything would just come on randomly.
